Came here on a recommendation from a friend. This is an incredible little omakase spot that should have a lot more attention! For only $60, you get a 10 course omakase that comes with a hand roll at the end and your choice of soup or ice cream. This is quite a deal compared to all the $100+ places that give you even less some times. You can opt to get a table if you want too but my group sat at the bar. There is a chalkboard behind the chef on which all the courses are listed so you can remember. Our chef was also generous and gave us a little bonus piece each at the end, which was very kind. From the outside, it looks like a regular neighborhood Japanese restaurant, but once you walk in, you'll find a cozy space with plenty of tables and small sushi counters. Opted for the 210$ omakase for two package this time and the difference between this package and the regular omakase is quite significant and well worth it. Initially my friend and I were going to do the omakase deluxe, but after doing some quick math, we realized it was a mere $15 difference for a few more tasty pieces and appetizers. This entire package came with 16 pieces, 2 appetizers (jalapeño scallop caviar + and peppery tuna tataki), a piece of uni sushi for each person, miso soup AND an ice cream of your choice. We were extremely satiated and stuffed after this meal. Each nigiri piece was delicious with a generous serving of fish to rice ratio. My favorite piece has to be the botan ebi piece. They serve it with a fried fish head; it's essentially a two for one deal! All the pieces were buttery, rich and melted in your mouth. Not a single piece seemed fishy at all. They played with certain condiments like ginger scallion and sambal/chili paste in a few pieces. I love how they kept it simple with specific pieces, but also enhanced the flavors of the other nigiri pieces. Our latest visit, we got the mini chirashi set with spicy miso ramen and the sweethearts roll. The roll itself was fine, but the set was really bad. The rice in the chirashi was barely seasoned and not that fresh it seemed, and the ramen was the worst ramen I've had in NYC. I had it before so I'm not sure what happened, but it was so watery without flavor that we ended up not finishing it (and I HATE wasting food). Usually it's tossed together, so I wasn't a big fan of their take on this. The Seaweed Salad is my go-to; it was fresh, cold, and went well my sushi. I also enjoyed the Miso Soup - the broth was nice and warm and I liked the small bits of tofu in every sip. All 3 Rolls were clearly well-made. The fish was fresh and the rolls weren't overly packed with rice. 18 rolls for ~$19 comes out to about $1/piece. There are definitely better prices in Astoria, but the quality somewhat justifies it. Just wondering how I found this place now! Wanting to eat omakase with a 6 month old baby is difficult. Found this place by luck and decided to risk it. We opted for the $60 option, which included 10 pieces of sushi, a handroll and soup or ice cream. Some of the highlights were the ika, scallop, salmon and of course wagyu and toro. For the price point, I would say it was worth it as the menu included quality ingredients although I wasn't totally full after the meal. It is right by the subway station, so it was super easy to get here on a Friday. However, this place is known for omakase, so sitting at the bar is usually reserved for that, make sure to say which you are there for, or there is confusion. Overall, the food was good, but the nigari is priced at 1 piece and not two like I am used to. So the order for nigari will be like omakase style, and it might be cheaper to do the $50 or $80 omakase. They do have larger rolls that are an average $15, which were tasty, and the plates/bentos looked sizeable. We decided to order from Sake Kawa because of its high ratings, and of course we regretted our decision. We ordered Sushi Sashimi Combo with Salad ($33) and Any 3 Rolls with Salad ($22). We went with Yellowtail Jalapeño, Spicy Tuna and Eel Avocado rolls. Salad came with just romaine lettuce which is weird. I usually expect some mixed greens. Sushi rolls were sloppy. I'm always excited when I see a new Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood, so even before this place opened I had already made sure my friends knew about it because I wanted to try it out. My friend brought me here to celebrate my birthday and we both ended up ordering the chirashi bowl, which was amazingly fresh, tasty, and for some reason really surprised me, maybe because it didn't seem very busy and that always scares me a little, especially for places that feature seafood. Well, Astoria and visitors need to frequent this business more so that they can keep on serving their delicious sashimi! Loved my experience here! I think the selling point is really the omakase price as well as the option to BYOB. There's street parking available within the radius, so finding a spot to park was a breeze. Bathrooms were clean, so that was a plus. The staff members were really welcoming and attentive (tho we did go midday on a weekday). My partner and I opted for the $80 deluxe omakase and it was definitely well worth it.
