My friend brought me here to celebrate my birthday and we both ended up ordering the chirashi bowl, which was amazingly fresh, tasty, and for some reason really surprised me, maybe because it didn't seem very busy and that always scares me a little, especially for places that feature seafood. Well, Astoria and visitors need to frequent this business more so that they can keep on serving their delicious sashimi! There's street parking available within the radius, so finding a spot to park was a breeze. Bathrooms were clean, so that was a plus. My sister in law picked this spot and it was funny bc I already had it saved in my bookmarks, so I was super excited to try this spot. We ordered their oysters, hamachi kama, soft shell crab, and unagi don for appetizer. Kumamotos are my fave so they were so yummy! The hamachi kama was made really good and their sauce was perfect. I reserved the entire bar at 8pm. I suggest making reservations in advance by calling since you will not be guaranteed omakase seating to see the sushi chefs prepare your food. Omakase for 2 was perfect for $200 however many of my friends are returning patrons for their $80 Omakase deluxe set. The O for 2 set comes with soup, tataki, carpaccio, 14/18 pcs chefs selection, hand roll, and ice cream. The rice was the perfect temperature and the sushi pieces were wonderfully presented on a chefs plate. My chopstick skills failed me one time haha and I dropped my sushi but the chef was understanding and remade a piece. My favorite piece would be the ebi shrimp. The toro caviar is the runner up. anybody who loves omakase and amazing and incredible nigiri look no further. What I love about each time I've gone to Sake Kawa is chef Alex has done something different and amazing to each piece. He truly understands the balance and textures of the fish he's using and his omakase is the best kept hidden sushi secret in Astoria. I've been to Nakazawa, I've been to Sushi in Jones, Sushi by Bou, I've had Nobu and Blue Ribbon. I promise you the omakase here is on another level and belongs in the city but way better than some of the spots I listed. If Sushi Nakazawa is god tier, Sake Kawa is Holy Spirit tier. Everyone I've brought here has had their lives changed. Highly recommend any omakase, the $55 is a great price point to test the waters but I promise you won't be dissapointed. I honestly don't want to go into each piece as I don't want to spoil it like a new Marvel movie, but some of my favorite pieces include the albacore tuna, the sake ocean trout, and the Madai. Even the heavy hitters like toro/wagyu/ikura/uni combos are just a whole other world themselves and chef Alex handles each piece with balance and mastery. Also recommend the Kumamoto oysters with uni and ikura, it's like the ocean in your mouth in all the best ways. Every meal is an experience at Sake Kawa and I don't know why everybody in Astoria is sleepin on it. There should be a line out the door everyday. Byob so bring ya own drinks and make sure to save a shot or two for the chef! The service is also great as Wendy and Joyce always greet me and my crew with a smile and know the menus well. This place might be good for nigiri and sashimi but it's not very good for rolls. Got six rolls - California, salmon avocado, spicy tuna, eel cucumber, yellowtail scallion, and futo maki. The only really good roll was the salmon avocado. The others had too little fish and too much julienned cucumber. In general, i really like cucumber but their preparation/slicing left no flavor or crunch. It was just watering down the taste of the sushi. The yellowtail scallion rolls were good but smaller than the other rolls (and smaller than what i saw in Yelp photos from earlier!) Spicy tuna was not bad. Hard to mess up California rolls but they did it somehow. The eel cucumber was probably the most egregious - mostly cucumber, hardly any eel. I wanted to find a local place that does Omakase in Queens, and one of the names that kept popping up was Sake Kawa, so I made reservations a week in advanced, and requested for the bar area as I knew we wanted to come in for their Omakase menu. Such a nice experience spending one of my good friend's birthday here. For our omakase reservation, the four of us were given the choice of sitting by the sushi bar or at a table. We ordered four of the basic omakase set ($50), a dozen oysters to start, and decided we would order more at the end if we were feeling it. The oysters were a little fishy tasting, and for the price, I think we could have skipped it. We had the option of miso soup or ice cream with our omakase, and we all decided to have the soup, which tasted standard. Then came the omakase! Our waitresses were very nice throughout the meal, but we were a little surprised that they did not present any of the fish, which came out in two sets of 5. I guess that's the price of sitting at a table! Of the 10, the second set truly blew us away with the quality of their scallop, ebi shrimp, fatty tuna, and salmon. I read somewhere on yelp that they had outdoor seating, but I guess that was when the weather was much warmer because they do not have a set up for outdoors anymore now that the weather is getting colder. the staff was kind enough to still set up a table for us and a portable heater. it was a very cold night, so they definitely tried their best to accommodate us given the circumstances of no indoor dining. we ordered 3 rolls for $15 and a special roll "spicy bad girl roll" along with two ramen: shio ramen and spicy miso ramen. the sushi was very fresh and taste very good. we really liked the spicy bad girl roll! shio ramen was also very good but I personally wasn't too fond of the ramen they used. spicy miso ramen was pretty spicy so if u don't like spice, definitely not for you. the char siu that came with the ramen was cooked nicely. although dinner was very cold, we had a good time. just wish indoor dining can resume. or if they can set up an outdoor dining space (like their neighbor) with heaters would be nice. omakase looks good here so will definitely give it a try when we visit again! read more

My fiancée and I are huge sushi fans and we were in NYC for a few days visiting family so we decided to try our first Omakase and this experience has forever changed my life for the better. I honestly can't stop thinking about how great this was and I found a place near our home that does Omakase and I need to try it. We started off with some appetizers. I ordered a specialty app that consisted of scallops, jalapeño slices and what I believe was black roe, all in a nice savory sauce. The scallops were soft and delicate, the jalapeño added a nice little spice and vegetal note, and the sauce kicked the umami flavors up a couple notches. I also got an assortment of nigiri, including salmon, bbq eel, albacore tuna and red snapper. I thought each one was delicious but little did I know, the nigiri in the Omakase was going to really blow me away. My meal also came with a miso soup and it was packed with a nice, balanced green onion flavor that was to die for. Where do I begin with the Omakase. You get 10 pieces of perfectly crafted nigiri and a hand roll, which come out in 3 courses. The nigiri is already pre-coated with soy sauce and wasabi by the sushi chef to make it in the way they think it should be enjoyed for peak flavor. I've had a lot of sushi, but I've never experienced the drastic differences between fish in terms of taste and texture like I did with this dish. There were fish that melted in your mouth, one tasted like salt water, a few with bizarrely amazing textures, and some with incredible umami taste. This was so good that I will be looking to order Omakase wherever I can find it. To finish up, the chef also gave us an extra piece of nigiri on the house and a couple of us got some green tea ice cream. Both of them were absolutely delicious and a great way to end a lunch.
