**UNIQUE & HARD TO FIND JAPANESE DELICACY**
**INTERESTING GHOST KITCHEN EXPERIENCE**
OVERVIEW:
When discussing Japanese cuisine, most everyone is familiar with sushi, ramen, tempura, teriyaki and bento - and then maybe even - donburi, and katsu. Meanwhile, individuals really in-the-know may even have an idea about Omakase. But Okonomiyaki - - what the hell is that?
Well, believe it or not, Okonomiyaki is one of the most popular dishes in Japan. Even more, It's available at restaurants, street food stalls, and it's also a really popular bar snack. So now, being such a beloved Japanese dish, why the heck have most people in America, never heard of Okonomiyaki? Is it some kind of wacky food conspiracy? I certainly don't know, but let me tell you, after trying this delicious delicacy for the first time, I really cannot understand why most Japanese restaurants here don't offer it.
Now I mentioned Omakase before, which in Japanese means " I leave it up to you". And this is where the restaurant's chef actually chooses what the diner will eat.
But now the antonym of Omakase is Okonomiyaki, which translates to "what I want cooked." So, with Okonomiyaki, YOU choose all the different ingredients and fillings that make up this savory pancake / crepe kind of thing. So to start off, the basic ingredients are a special batter, and cabbage. And then, you choose different vegetables, noodles, eggs, meats, or seafood to add in before it's cooked.
Now, to make things a little more interesting (or confusing), there are two main, different styles of Okonomiyaki. The Osaka style, has all the ingredients mixed together in the batter, and then cooked on a griddle like a big friggin frittata. But the Hiroshima Style, has all the ingredients layered, one at a time, along with a layer of Yakisoba noodles, and then griddle cooked.
Then last of all, after cooking, either style is topped with Okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, nori, Bonito flakes, and / or sesame seeds.
Now here at Okonomi - undoubtedly, to keep things simple - all the ingredients for each Okonomiyaki are chosen by the chef. But when ordering, you can choose different toppings, such as pork, seafood, fried egg, tofu, cheese, kimchi, etc. And, vegetarian versions are also available.
WHAT'S GOOD TO ORDER:
- Obviously, the Okonomiyaki is going to be the must
order item here. And my favorite version is the
Hiroshima layered style, as it's the tastiest and most
interesting one to chow down on, I feel (YMMV).
- There is also a Modern Yaki version available, which
is the Osaka mixed style, with an extra layer of fried
noodles, and then topped with a fried egg.
- The Yakisoba or Yakiudon are tasty sauteed noodle
dishes, if you want something in addition to your
Okonomiyaki. Comes veggie style or with pork.
- The Guilty Pleasure Onigiri is a delicious Japanese
flavored white rice. The portion size is small however.
- The Karange Japanese style fried chicken appetizer is
a tasty option also.
SERVICE / DECOR:
Okonomi is a ghost Kitchen, so as with the other establishments located in the Sunnyside Cloud Kitchens complex, only take-out or delivery is available, via food delivery apps like DoorDash. And there are no tables or seatings provided for customers in the building. Orders can also be placed for pick-up however, directly at the complex via a kiosk. And I can see how this option would allow an individual to order from multiple ghost kitchens during one visit. Doing this seems intriguing, as there are kitchens providing Latin food, soul food, vegan soul food, burgers, wings, and even Burmese food, which is notoriously hard to find anywhere. The pick-up ordering area is clean and decorated in a hipster sort of way. And when your order is ready, a text or notification will alert you to receive the food from the pick up counter. All in all, it's a very fun and interesting experience.
PARTING THOUGHTS:
It's a really good bet that you've never had the pleasure of dining on Okonomiyaki anywhere. And then maybe, a ghost kitchen is something you may have - also -never experienced. Well, if this is the case, what are you waiting for. Get off that drive through line at Arby's, and go have some food-fun tonight at Okonomi. You'll be happy you did, I promise. read more
