There is a large selection of good coffee in this small shop. the coffee I had came from Bali and it was expertly brewed. No bitterness or sourness, just a creamy cup of good coffee. Right, my first 1-star review for anything ever. I'm sorry it has to go to you lot as I do support privately owned coffee places and really really want these enthusiastic and lovely people to do well. I could go on about how much they seem to know about beans and coffee in theory but when it comes down to the product, it was the worse coffee I ever had in my life, no exaggeration whatsoever. I ordered a cappuccino and the coffee came out overwhelmingly bitter and burnt, the milk tasted sour and the foam was stretchy like mozzarella. It was so hot it burnt my mouth and completely ruined the supposedly amazing Colombian (?) beans. I almost wanted to turn around and return the coffee but we were on the way to somewhere and didn't have the time. I'm not a coffee snob but I do know what a good barista is and it seems like these boys could take some lessons from any old bartender in any obscure cafe in Italy and it would benefit them. Less talk, more skills. Complete waste of money. Best of luck boys read more

If you are reading Yelp and looking for good coffee... I am going to give you some advice which might be counter intuitive but you will be glad you did. If your experience with coffee shops run towards Peet's and Starbucks, you are likely aware these places are the pseudo upscale chains of McDonald's ilk (ok Pete's would be like the Cheesecake Factory of coffee shops, but I digress). But that is mostly what we know of as a "coffee shop". Mountain Grounds is a totally different kind of place... I ordered my normal mocha that I would get at a chain and John (the owner) made me not only a mocha that was delicious but some other concoction that was f*cking amazing. He had in depth knowledge about the coffees (like a fine sommolier at a 5 star restaurant), innovative (there was a touch of coconut milk in my cappuccino) ingredients and a warm friendly passionate staff. So do yourself a favor and just go in and ask John to make you something yummy and let his skill and knowledge guide you to a truly unique and delicious caffeinated experience. I might have to go here twice today... damn that was delicious. read more

I saw this place on yelp with 26 five star reviews and I figured either this guy has a lot of friends and family helping him bump this rating or there's something delicious going on here. I determined to find out which so I went in and discovered...IT IS DELICIOUS! Had a double tall salted caramel white mocha made with almond milk. I'm skeptical when he suggests this but I'll give it a shot. I prefer non-dairy as I always feel better but can't seem to find anything that is good enough in the sweet/creamy department to appropriately counter balance the strong espresso....until now. Maybe this man is a genius? Or maybe this coffee is a miracle? Either way....he has just won 12th place nationwide (2nd place in all of California- eat that southern California!) in some kind of coffee contest for a reason. They open at five a.m. on weekdays too. So...I can text my order in. Drive up before work. Stay warm in my car and have this amazing deliciousness. Best part? His lovely wife was so awesome to calculate how many calories are in this drink...about 170. Far less than my Starbucks usual and I'm much happier with this. Use your square wallet and get 50% your first purchase and it keeps track of a punch card for you. $5.00 off after 10 drinks. Plus he is supporting local businesses. Ever heard of pop momma pop? Best popcorn on the planet and he has it. He is also working with a local pastry chef for some baked goodies to include GLUTEN FREE! I'm basically ecstatic. Outdoor seating with a nice warmer too. Inside is quite small. There is some seating along the window but not much. You get four customers in line and it is packed but when you can have your drink brought out, who cares? read more

The owner's wife makes gluten free oatmeal in flavors like cocoa banana, strawberry banana, and cinnamon sugar. In addition to an amazing variety of coffee and tea drinks (try the Chai - it's awesome if you like Chai), they also have baked goods from a local Martinez bakery called Saucie's. This place is fantastic. Seriously. You will not find a better place to go for coffee or espresso in the area. When I went in this morning, John told me he was going to fix up something special while I decided my drink of choice. Naturally, I agreed to some free quality caffeine. It was much more than I expected... a cappuccino infused w/ lemon zest, ginger root, and coconut sap... seriously, WHERE else do you get that sort of coffee creativity in the 925? Nowhere but here. It tasted wonderful. Not to mention that it came with a wonderful buzz. I don't know about you guys, but whenever I seem to buy starbucks out of desperation I seem to get lethargic rather than perky. Idk. My point being is that with real, handcrafted coffee.. comes a real, handcrafted buzz, and that was definitely the case. I was practically skipping out of the store, and I still had a full coffee in hand. Good shit. Pricing is great too. No 6 dollar chocolate milk with some incorrect espresso here and there, just true to life fair-priced coffee drinks, made properly. Everyone who works here and is involved in the operation is incredibly pleasant. Great family vibe in the shop. Sortof like getting espresso at a "high-end" shop in oakland or the city with 0% of the pretentious staff or customers. Very unique. Also probably the only place you can get a pour-over here. Essentially, Mountain Grounds is what Martinez has been needing for a very long time. I hope their business does excellent here, because they really deserve it. Our favorite coffee stop in Martinez. John is spectacular and the drinks.... well, yumm. The staff is great and as should be in a family run local business, remember you when you come in. A review said something about not being able to sit because of the children of the staff taking up table space. I guess thats what (ugh!) Starbucks is for. I require cream in my coffee, not half and half. They actually use real cream! If you are in the mood to explore, let John whip you up one of his fantastic combos. My favorite so far is a raspberry mocha with a double shot of expresso. Now THAT will fire up your morning! Each cup is crafted to order so don't be in a hurry. Top your morning with their gluten free raspberry oatmeal and you will have the perfect start to your day. Parking is ok if you have an economy car as the lot is small. Okay. I walked in the door 20 minutes before closing, looked at the menu, ordered something they didn't have on the menu, and they handed it to me! Amazing! And it was great! Nine of us sat down and we all loved our drinks. Barrista John sat down, asked where we were coming from, and was not at all phased that we were all coming from a meeting of Witch Elders. This morning I had an appointment for an oil change. I asked if there was a coffee shop nearby that had wifi. They directed me right across Alhambra Avenue to Mountain Grounds. The pour over coffee was superb, and there was a great variety to choose from. The best thing, though, although I love a great cup of coffee, it was like walking into an ongoing sitcom on TV, but real life. This is just a really fun place. Amazing find in Martinez. Chemex, siphon brewers, scales, single origin coffees. Pretty much looks just like my kitchen. If you know what I'm talking about this is the place for you. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you just need to know this place has great coffee made by people who know what they are doing and care that it's done right. Short of going over the hills to Berkeley or Oakland the only place around even close to this level of coffee is in Walnut Creek, at another mom and pop shop, where they roast their coffee right in the shop. The staff here is always very friendly. The place is small but has outside seating that is nice on a warm day. If you like sugary milk drinks (like they have at Starbucks) they can do that too only better. They also sell pastries from Saucies in downtown Martinez. Bottom line if you want great coffee this is the place. read more
