The bakery is only open on certain days, so plan ahead. But let me tell you, the almond croissant is the star! The filling is sweet enough, not too dry, and the croissant itself is incredibly crispy. Great little coffee shop and bakery in Tomales, right on CA-1, the Pacific Coast Highway. We needed to recharge for another day of our Pt. Reyes getaway, so we hit this spot, a short walk from our Airbnb. First and foremost, great service. The folks working there were genuinely friendly, attentive, and helpful. There was also a gentleman there as a customer, I believe he was related to one of the employees, who was so sweet and helpful with getting the door for us and helping us get a place to sit, as we juggled our ordered items and wandered around in a bit of a stupor before we had had our coffee. Thank you, good sir. I am still genuinely amazed at how nice people are in these small, off-the-beaten-path towns, as opposed to in the overpacked rat cage urban areas. Popular spot, with a good number of bicyclists, passers-through, and locals coming in for coffee and eats. They have an impressive selection of pastries and sandwiches, and I really wish I had tried the veggie croissant which looked great. We got coffees and shared a slice of quiche. I got my usual iced coffee, and happily, they had oat milk to go with it. After we paid, we realized they also have momos, so you know we had to get a round. We just couldn't pull it together at the AirBnB. The place was packed with a line of 10 people to order and bodies inside and out mostly bicyclists, motorcycle riders and people with dogs. We ordered a coffee, iced coffee and quiche. After ordering we noticed they had momo's on the kraft paper menu so I ordered a momo for my partner and a momo, hold the OJ, for me. Dranks gone and time to head to Dillon Beach. Interesting side note.... This place bakes the bread served at The Marshall Store with their oysters. Came here after seeing all the good reviews about their pizza. We went during the week so they were only serving the thick crust square pizza. We had pepperoni and mushroom. Both were good but I prefer thin crust which is only served on the weekends. There was plenty of outdoor seating. If you want to get any baked goods, go early. read more

Do not venture to West Marin without a stop at Route One Bakery & Kitchen! My daughter and I visited on a summer weekday from Inverness. She loved the unique hot chocolate croissant (think smores) and I was a big fan of the banana bread. We played in a nearby playground after our pastries and then came back to grab pizza to take home for lunch. Their focaccia pizza is otherworldly! If you're a mushroom lover, definitely don't miss that one! I also enjoyed their Caesar salad. We came back on Saturday before heading home to get more pizza and some sourdough bread. They closed while we were there so the staff offered us free sourdough loafs to wish we gladly excepted. We worked through the loaf over the next few days. I truly hesitate to write this review and call to your attention one of the BEST bakeries you will ever visit. The more you know the more likely you will visit making it more likely I am going to have to wait in a long line..... So what can you expect when you stop here? Melt in your mouth pastries, amazing focaccia, sourdough bread, pizza (we didn't try it this time), desserts, coffee and more. Croissants that are flaky, light, buttery, some savory some with chocolate, almond, big enough to share but you will want it all to yourself. The Cinnamon roll was like nothing I have had before (I am pretty sure they only make them on Sat/Sun), fluffy, sweet, with perfect frosting and just the right amount of cinnamon.....a must try. We bought a loaf of Sourdough bread to take home, it was oh so good!!!!! Service was excellent, yes, this is not a budget place, but trust me worth every penny (and more). We went early on a Sunday in Feb., wasn't too busy (about six others were there when we were there), but I have heard that during the summer this place can have very long waits (and it is literally in the middle of no where). Nice outdoor area, inside is basically just a place to order. Take a trip up to Pt. Reyes, stop here on the way to grab some goodies to eat when you get to Drakes Bay, and make sure you have extra to take back home with you. read more

The bread here is incredible. I got their sourdough round with olives and it was airy and moist, but not too hole-y such that it's hard to put a spread on it. I didn't love the hint of black pepper in the olive bread, so I'd probably get a regular sourdough round next time. I was most excited about the Roman-style pizza, but this ended up being underwhelming for me. I found the crust too crispy and there was too much bread relative to toppings. The version here feels more like a hybrid between American style and Roman style pizza - a bit heavier on the melted cheese with a noticeable crust. If you're not feeling pizza, the chicken salad sandwich is a solid bet. Sweets wise, the oatmeal cranberry cookie was really good, soft and not too sweet, and my boyfriend was a fan of the strawberry rhubarb pie. read more

Stopped by after coming back from a walk on the beach. I got a loaf of focaccia and a persimmon chocolate scone. Both were really good! I took the focaccia home and crisped it up in the oven and the crust on the bottom was divine. The onions on top were rich and caramely and I enjoyed the texture and flavor the seeds and zucchini gave. The persimmon scone was good as well! I wish the persimmon flavor was a little stronger, but it is a pretty mellow fruit after all. Would stop by again if in the area and craving some bread. read more

A MUST stop while driving/cycling along CA1. A few years ago, my husband and I stumbled across this place while in the area and decided to try their kouign amann. It was our first one and we were hooked on the flaky buttery layers with caramel crust and bright fruity filling. Then the pandemic happened and we hunted all over for more of them in our local area. Despite having found really good ones, we could never get route 1 bakery out of our minds and wondered if it was just the first time magic or if that particular pastry was truly the "queen among" all the others. We have since been back and I can confirm that this is the best kouign amann I've ever had. I will gladly drive 1-2 hours on any given weekend to satisfy my pastry craving. Have been going here for years but on our recent visit we saw a huge increase in the price of all items. Also the pizza slices have gotten much smaller. An order of meatballs that used to be $8 is now $15. For three meatballs ! They had a huge salads in the past but now they are tiny.
