We had been wanting to try this donut shop in Concord, and we finally did today. I decided to try their maple iced cronut. First of all, the staff were all super friendly. We were planning to do takeout, but we decided to dine in instead, and they brought the donut to our table. Everyone was very nice. As for the cronut itself, I am sure it would have been much better when it was freshly fried. Even though I had it at room temperature, I still thought the cronut was pretty good. The scramble was great as well. This place has a huge menu and they do a great job on so many fronts. Came in here for the first time the other day. I got a few donuts to go. I was surprised to see that they have a full breakfast menu with a sit down area. The prices for breakfast in today's economy seemed fair. Anyway, when I arrived the lady behind the counter was finishing up with two gentlemen. I had to wait a while until she was done flirting. I mean, who doesn't like a good flirt, except I got the rush treatment. She was pleasant enough, but I don't think she could have cared less if I was there or not. I ordered a half-dozen mixed and a bear claw off of DoorDash yesterday and holy cow were they rancid! First thing, I received a cinnamon roll instead of the bear claw, whatever, and the mixed box was a chocolate old fashioned that was absolutely horrid. It tasted not only old but it had a slight acetone flavor to it? It was so bad I burped that nasty one up all day and had the joy of re-tasting it for hours. There was also a jelly-filled, a chocolate bar, glazed cake, chocolate cake, and whatever my kid ate. She said she didn't like it and wouldn't be eating any more of them, which is great because neither will I. This is a great hole in the wall restaurant that serves breakfast fares and fresh donuts. I first found them through TooGoodToGo. They gave generous and fresh packs of donuts to their customers and I was hooked! After getting their TooGoodToGo deal a few times, I started becoming a regular customer. We drop by frequently for donuts, breakfast burritos, or a coffee. Always good! I'll be candid, it's not amazing perfect food. We went for breakfast the other day and my husband got the French toast while I did something different and decided on a burger for breakfast. This review is based off of a Too Good to Go order from them. I received an overstuffed box of a bunch of assorted doughnuts. Definitely worth the price when the box was ~$6! The glazed doughnut was standard and I quite enjoyed the jelly-filled one. Their doughnuts were mostly fluffy and pretty light. A friend of ours recommended this place to us to go while we were driving around looking to get breakfast. It's a cute donut shop in the front and a dinner in the back. I ordered the Country Fried Steak and eggs, hashdrowns, and sourdough toast ($14.95). My wife got the Skinny Chicken Omelet with hashdrowns and sourdough toast ($14.29). Everything was really good! The gravy was flavorful with chunks of sausage in it. Just wanted a little bit more. The steak was also very flavorful. Hashdrowns crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. Just the wa I like it. The pack of ol' timers sit huddled near the front - greeting everyone who walks in - talking about business, city politics, and the old Italian neighborhoods that vanished long ago with their own grandparents. You have time to eavesdrop on the conversation of the elder council because the one employee on the clock is busy sliding pastry into the oven, brewing coffee, and jockeying the register. Maybe you tire of staring at your phone's screen. You saunter over to the newspaper rack and pick up a tabloid sheet of the Contra Costa Courier. There's a cover story about a diplomatic mission between Turkmenistan and the city of Concord. How very international this suburb has become. These sorts of free local newspapers have the dullest writing. The interest you once had in discovering things about the local scene has waned. And what perfect timing, you've spotted an opening at the counter and rush forward. In the raised donuts you find the crumb has the long strands of dough that is consistent with a well developed gluten structure. To the bite, the chewiness yields in a way that's consistent with an adept application of the enricher (butter). The crumb (interior) of a raised donut should not be crumbly. It should have a network of gluten within, but it must also be tender. These traits are ostensibly at odds with one another. Of course, it is the baker's skill that brings them into harmony. The donut's crust is brown and crisp, retaining little oil from the frying process. This shows that they went in the vat at the right time: they are neither underproofed nor overproofed. That same crisp edge to the crust is likewise found on the cronuts, which are also delicately layered. The crullers could have been crisper. I suppose it can be a challenge to properly brown a cruller because they're made with choux pastry which has a high percentage of moisture. The cruller crumb, was however, adequately moist and airy. Date: 05/24/25 Dear diary today I had the eggs hash brown and sausages along with what looked like a small milk tea loaded with ice. Had someone else with me that only had a veggie omelet and green tea. Total came out to $42 somehow and my meal reeked of old oil. Eggs were undercooked to where the egg whites were watery and jiggling around, they also reeked of old oil, Hash browns were so undercooked that they didn't even slightly stay together, tasted like nothing, and were covered in oil and also had the signature old oil smell. Lastly the sausages were covered in a thick coat of oil and reeked horribly of old oil. It smelled like they cooked my meal inside a toilet that was freshly used. The plate was also covered in oil, didn't even touch them. The sourdough toast was alright but had butter on it which wasn't exactly to my taste. Lastly the place looked just overall dirty. If you sit at a regular table it looks like between where the window and table meet the wall is falling apart and molding. I forgot to mention but the portions were pretty small. I don't understand how this place has such high review after that short experience but I'd recommend listening to the one star reviews. read more

I have lived in the area for 18 years and I just found out about Chick's today! It's a typical donut shop up front with a classic breakfast diner in the back. I was blown away with how extensive their menu is! They have all the classic breakfast dishes, various breakfast sandwiches and burritos, multiple varieties of eggs benedict, scrambles, omelettes, oh my. I had the bacon breakfast burrito and it was pure perfection - crispy bacon and hash browns, fluffy eggs, and melted cheese, all wrapped in a soft and yummy flour tortilla. The burrito is huge and enough for two people to share or two meals (or more) unless you can put down a huge burrito! I have not tried this moment yet, but I'm bringing some to go for my son's birthday. My waitress recommended their crumb donut. I am a fan of a chocolate old-fashioned and my son loves anything maple. I will put back on the donut front. The staff are all super sweet and helpful, and the coffee is hot and strong. I got the Corned Beef Hash $14.75 and some coffee. I thought it was going to be real corned beef that they would serve but it was just canned corned beef. It was ok, not bad. The dude and I came here on 11/28/20 to get a surprise breakfast for the dudes family. My love raves about this place as his grandpa who is a WWII veteran would love to come to this donut shop when he was younger and would take my love a lot when he was a kid too! My love tells me that each time he would come up to visit them he made it a tradition to stop here and get his grandparents and his dad their favorite treats. Anywho, this place is so special to me as it has brought lovely experiences for generations to come and many many more too! Upon entering it definitely had an old school donut shop vibe versus trying to be trendy with the times. Their donut area is small but they sell other items too! All the donuts look so delicious and I couldn't help but want to get all my favorite donuts which are cinnamon rolls, Maple bar, and glazed. I just opted for a glaze as I feel you can taste how their dough and sweetness level is. If the glaze is good you know the rest will be good! It was very crisp - not too sweet or thick. It was perfect of how I like my donuts of airy, not too sweet or thick with dough with a nice crunch on the edges as it hit all markers for me! Talk about an insanely tasty breakfast! Chick's knows how to deliver the goods, and this breakfast was simply heavenly. I've actually been trying to dine at this place for years now. Every time that I've tried to come here in the past, the line has been out the door. This place is always packed and stays super busy. Well, one morning I was finally able to get my ass up to beat the crowds. Thank GAWD that I did because this breakfast was sensational. Stopped by for breakfast on an early Saturday morning pre-COVID. Chick's is known primarily for their donuts but they also keep a steady breakfast and lunch crowd too (especially on the weekends). The interior setup is very diner-like with casual booth and counter seating. I sat at the counter and decided to order their California Omelet with country potatoes. Honestly, this was one of my best omelets that I've had in a while! The California Omelet came stuffed with turkey, crispy bacon, fresh avocado, and melted cheese. My oh my did they hook a sista up. So much crispy bacon and turkey inside of that think. And that fresh avocado! Mmm mmm mmm. Layers and layers of goodness in that thang. And let me not even start on those potatoes! Country fried GOODNESS! They were perfectly crispy. Sittin' pretty next to those grilled peppers and onions. Nom nom! Just say YES to the country fried potatoes! Their omelet dishes also come with a side of your choice of carbies. I went with an English muffin. It came lightly toasted and I happily smothered a ton of buttah on top. It melted. My heart sang. This. Was. BREAKFAST!!! Yes folks; breakfast at its' finest. Service was actually pretty fast considering how busy they got, but not as attentive as I'm used to when compared to other neighborhood breakfast spots. But honestly, the food is really amazing. Chick's donuts are the best!!! How have I not reviewed Chick's? We've been here many times over the years. I came here twice since the pandemic started and they are being very safe with wearing masks, plexiglass shield, etc. We like everything here: glazed, apple fritters, sprinkles, old fashioned - all are good! My favorites are the donut holes and apple fritters. The apple fritter is *huge* so find a friend to share it with. They must make all the donuts on site because it's always so fresh. read more
