Stopped in to grab a couple of "quick" slices to go, the service was slow & the slices were overcooked & stale.

Yes, the food is fantastic. No qualms about that. But due to their rapid success lately, they just aren't equipped or managed well to handle it. We visited on Saturday and waited 20 minutes in line to place our order. Once we ordered, the girl behind the counter informed us of a 30 minute wait. We accepted, no problem. But it was an HOUR AND A HALF before our food was ready. Why quote us 30 minutes if you can't fulfill it? There were no updates on a delay, we just sat there confused in a hot uncomfortable little store with many other hot, uncomfortable, confused people. We should've just walked away after 45minutes, but at some point it gets ridiculous. I never even fathomed an hour and a half wait. No apologies. No updates. Just left us there waiting and confused for an eternity. I suggest avoiding this place until they learn how to deal with high-volume ordering. read more

Delicious & unique Roman style pizza in Somerville! The slices are huge (I'm not kidding when I say the square slice was roughly the size of my face), and there's a wide variety of toppings to chose from. They ferment their crust for up to 72 hours, so it's got a sourdough-like taste too it. I was pleasantly surprised by that unique flavor, and how it complimented the toppings so well. read more

However tonight I ordered a half Roman (12x18 and like 3lbs by the way!!) and am thrilled with crust and sauce, but disappointed by the lack of toppings (basil and mozz) across the pizza. Came last week and had a steak and cheese sub that was good. Stopped in again tonight and ordered a chicken parm sub that was inedible. Cutlets were so chewy and tasted old/overcooked and greasy. Tried mortadella head for the first time and was very disappointed in my steak and cheese sub. You couldn't even see the steak when it was closed and had a tiny amount of steak on the inside. I truly have never seen a smaller sub. The mozzarella sticks however were great and my fiancé did enjoy his pizza. read more

Very disappointed with my experiences at Mortadella Head. First of all it took 30 minutes to get a sub. I ordered the Tricolore sub which contains Prosciutto, Mozzarella, tomato, and mixed greens. Shocked too see there was no Arugula. I took a bite of my friends Pizza and all I could taste was cheese. In my opinion they are too focused on Tiktoks rather than making food. Let me start off this review by mentioning that two months ago I moved from Brooklyn to Somerville. Changing cities is always a little stressful, and I was a little concerned that the food-especially the pizza- in Boston just wouldn't live up. I am happy to tell you that Davis Square has some really great pizza spots, and this is one of them. We ordered the Pig Pen pizza through the Slice app. It's a classic pizza but topped with bbq pulled pork, bacon, pickles, and fried onion strings. It was ready pretty quickly, and I came to pick it up at the small shop. The pizza was delicious. The basics- crust, sauce, and cheese - were all done right. On top of that I LOVE creative toppings and they definitely have that here. Quite honestly the pizza is up there but not the best I've ever had. BUT you will not find topping combos like this anywhere else. The bbq pork was amazing, the sauce on it didn't overpower the other ingredients which is so important. The bacon pieces were kind of small but bacon makes everything better, right?! Pickles added a lot. 10/10. My only complaint is that the onion strings were kind of soggy which is mainly why I didn't give 5 stars. Still tasted good, and I'm sure the moisture of the pizza in the box makes it hard to keep them crisp. I loved the pizza we ordered and can't wait to try other choices here! read more

My girlfriend and I have gone here twice before and its been good. She loves the viral chopped Caesar sub and I like the pizza. However she is a vegetarian so asks for the sub with "no meat". Today we ordered around 30 minutes before they closed and picked up our sandwiches at 8:45. We get 10 minutes into our drive home and she decides to check them as they both just had "chop" written on them when previously it has said "chop no meat". Lo and behold one had prosciutto and chicken and one just had chicken (odd). We went back and explained that she is a vegetarian and cant have meat. The kid working behind the counter seemed confused about this. so we reiterated again the no meat request and he confirmed with the kitchen. Then he proceeded to take back the sandwich with only chicken (odd again). We know they're close to closing so we apologize for the inconvenience and wait patiently. (side note: I worked at a pizza shop for years and the girlfriend is a server we are accustomed to refunding or comping a customer when the kitchen slips up but didn't even hear an "im sorry this happened") we get the sandwich and make it home just to sit down and finally eat. When I tell you I laughed out loud. (see photo attached) Its also clear they chopped the sandwich with a dirty knife as there is sauce on the cut mark. Also, the bread is not toasted leaving it doughy. I cant tell if we were given someone else's order or they were just messing with us. (we were the only people in the shop btw). To be honest we are furious and probably wont go back ever again as this was ridiculous. The Plymouth Rockstar used to be one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. And for $13, it pretty much needed to be. But I just got it again and it's been changed a lot, mostly the bread and the turkey. It's like they started from scratch. I don't know how anyone could have complained about the original version. Also, the price must have gone up recently because it's unlikely I would have paid $13 for it originally, before it had been proven. Also, it's disappointing that you don't get a choice of sides any more. I think they said because pasta fagioli is hot and therefore isn't a summer thing? Okay, but you still sell hot food like pizza, right? Do we really need to be dogmatic about the seasonality of hot vs. cold side dishes? By the time I get the food home do they really think the pasta is still hot anyway? I've had a slice of pizza from here twice. One time it was good, the other time it was soggy enough that the dough turned into that thing where you really have to struggle to cut it. Not that cutting it into pieces was my first option, that was already a compromise because it was too wet and messy to hold. read more

***UPDATED*** I go here all the time, about once a week. So I will say: the staff have all been nice, friendly and helpful. The pizza is great, it's become my go to spot. The Buffalo Chicken and the Mameluke are definitely favorites. The homemade chips that come with sandwiches are awesome, really like em. The sandwiches on the other hand, need a serious overhaul. I'm sure something like a meatball sub would be passable, especially since they make their meatballs, which are delicious. But the pastrami is awful. Seriously the worst pastrami sandwich I've ever had. I felt less ripped off paying $38 for one at the Carnegie deli in NY. First off: on the menu it says "subs" and then "sandwiches" which led me to believe it wasn't on a sub roll (I could have asked, so really my own fault I guess) but if everything is on a sub then don't make it a separate category? The pastrami is thick cut, like a ham steak, which I order a pastrami sandwich I definitely did not expect. Maybe shaved pastrami, like I've had on every other sandwich I've ever had throughout my entire life isn't as implicit as I thought... but basically it was nearly $14 for a crappy pastrami sandwich made on a mediocre white sub roll, and I honestly was stunned at how off the mark this was. They should call it the "Horsemeat" sandwich because that's what it was like eating it. Visited Mortadella for the first time last Saturday. Wife and I shared some slices of pizza (bacon/potato and buffalo) and the Mayflower fries. Pizza is amazing, unlike any other pizza I've had in the area. The fries were also good as well (wife loved them). Excited to go back and try something new next time (there's such a large menu!) I get they make it in house, they don't buy it frozen off somewhere. And maybe I'm too used to eating smaller sized mozz sticks, but honestly it was pretty gross to be chewing on a huge hunk of cheese that was gooey in the beginning but by the time you're finished (because the cheese is SO BIG), it's cold. I couldn't finish even one. 2. My issue with Mortadella Head is my issue with Boston Burger Company (same owners), curate your menu! There's just way too many sandwich options. Let me tell you guys something, I don't think I've ever eaten at a place where the food was so underwhelming. I'm not sure what kind of filters these guys are using on Instagram, but believe when I say this, the catfished the hell outta me. Look at these fries that they had the audacity to sell me for $8.00. Then we come to The aptly named "Brokeback" sub which coming in at $17.00, you'd expect to be somewhat satisfied. Negative, not gonna happen. You thought that you were getting a delicious well flavored sub? THINK AGAIN. Even though I asked for extra cheese and extra mayo, this was probably the driest thing I've put in my mouth since that one time on the beach where I thought the sand would taste good. So thanks Mortadella Head my reputation amongst my co workers and friends is shot over this (my suggestion) and as the great Tiger King once proclaimed "I may never financially recover from this". So first things first: This is a small place so if you want to eat in, you should know that. We were a party of four and we got a table at 8pm. The menu is extensive. We had Gomorrah (pizza) and we had the the rockstar sub. I'm a bit of a snob with my pizza because I've had real pizza in NYC but this place is the best dough i have found in Boston. Not thin crust. Generally i hate crust and go for the middle piece- that proved a mistake because the crust was amazing. The sub was amazing too & it was all super duper affordable. We had fried dough, i preferred Ds nuts but the cannoli one was not bad. Everything was fresh and warm but most of all the service and the person helping us out with suggestions was amazing!!!! * Large pizza order review * Candidly. Not great. Potential is there. It really could be amazing. But it's not. For the price or other similar pizza spots (all-star/Otto/flatbread) this was lacking. The center of the pizza was soggy and wet. Even tried to heat some pizza in the oven to crisp it up but stayed soggy and limp. Nothing is worse than half your slice like this. Ordered a the cousin vinny. Slightly confused as it had minimal prosciutto (maybe one deli slice total) and the "fior di latte" is just regular melted mozz cheese like a normal white pizza. For $23 i expected a bit more. Between the sogginess and poor amount of toppings it feels generous for a 3. But the deli sandwich portion of mortadella head still looks promising. I got the Eggplant parm sandwich from this place via Grubhub delivery. The bread was fresh, the sauce was good, but not alot of places here including this one gives off any eggplant flavor in their eggplant parm! Delivery from this place arrived sooner than expected and liked the packaging - pleasantly surprised that the sandwich came with crispy chips (parmesean flavored) and a side of picked dill vegetables. I ordered delivery and was put off by the price but really wanted a Reuben. I indicated in the notes I wanted corned beef rather than pastrami and that is what I got! The corned beef was obviously fresh and either made in house or selectively sources. Same with the sauerkraut. While the bread was also fantastic I would have hoped for rye to bring it all together. Either way, I'll go back to try another for sure. read more

UPDATE: After our order arrived more than two hours late and ice cold, they immediately offered to refund, which I very much appreciate. We had to reheat everything and I was very late to get on the road as planned, but it appeared the pizza and mozz sticks would've been quite delicious if we'd gotten them fresh. We put our order in at 6:30, called to check in at 7:45, and now that it's past 8, we are being told our food was just picked up and it's not their fault that it's so late. Okay, I'm just going to say it...I don't like pizza. I also don't like burgers or ice cream. Something might be wrong with me. But that aside, let me just say that I love Mortadella Head. Here's why: - Delivery is quick - Salads are killer - Eggplant app is enough to feed an army and delicious - My husband is obsessed with pizza - especially theirs - and we can both get things we like (menu is huuuuuuuge and everything so far has been great) While I've never stepped foot inside, I can still say it's a great add to the 'hood.
