A vanishing legend, 1919-2026. But this was my first time being here…read more Corned Beef Reuben: The beef slices were very thin, so there's not much texture or juice; it was like supermarket ham slices. The bread was ordinary; it wasn't toasted with butter, so the aroma was significantly reduced, but the sauce prevented it from being dry. The pickles weren't too sour, and the coleslaw was refreshing and sweet, which I liked. Pastrami Reuben: Completely different from the pastrami I had in Philadelphia. This is more like a reduced-salt version of bacon slices--firmer and oilier, but still quite fragrant. S&S Wings: Signature chicken wings. The sauce was very generous, creating a strong sweet and sour flavor. The fermented flavor of the blue cheese sauce was also very strong. It might be a bit too heavy for my taste. But the meat was tender, and the batter was still a bit crispy, which was interesting. Egg Benedict: A classic breakfast; a soft-boiled egg can't be bad. However, the potato chunks were totally unseasoned, and the hollandaise sauce was ridiculously sour. Potato Pancakes: A unique recipe. I expected something like hash browns or thin shredded potato pancakes, but they were surprisingly thick. They were fried to a fragrant perfection, soft and chewy inside but with a hard crust. The sour cream wasn't sour enough, and the apple sauce was sweet; I couldn't really accept dipping them in it... Blueberry Pancakes: Blueberries were directly added to the pancakes, a first for me. However, the pancakes had a rather rough texture, and I didn't understand why the sweet ones were paired with sausage (or bacon). The sausage was firm, with a strong ginger flavor--very addictive! It's worth mentioning that many toppings/sauces, such as potato chips, honey, and butter, were just pre-made, sometimes without even being unpacked, which felt rather perfunctory. In short: Huge portions, decent taste, worth trying for nostalgia. However, perhaps due to the recent surge in customers, the staff was overwhelmed, resulting in a less than ideal service experience, especially the long wait for seating and ordering (even with a reservation). Those who mind should think twice before going.

As the name "Mercato" implies, it's not a restaurant, so no place to eat, no place to "do your business" after, and if you've made it to the north end, you already know there's no place to park. -- Italian Sandwich: Long, soft bread, kinda like the kind you had in your school cafeteria, only a million times softer, a million times more crackly, and a million times better. Setting the base are oil, balsamic vinegar, lettuce, tomato, pickles, hots, and provolone. Italian sandwiches usually come flat-stacked or in a C-shape. Here, it's a fluffy stack, with the VERY-thin-sliced-to-order meats-- prosciutto, mortadella, salami-- piled generously but delicately, like tissue paper. Mortadella Head is a modern Italian sandwich shop and pizza spot in Davis Square that has built a reputation for oversized sandwiches and creative takes on classic comfort food. We walked into a casual, energetic space with a stylish interior that felt more like a neighborhood lunch spot than a traditional sub shop. Seating was somewhat limited, but it worked well for a quick meal or takeout, and the steady flow of customers reflected its growing popularity. The sandwiches are the biggest draw, especially the chopped Caesar sub that has become one of the restaurant's signature items. We ordered it and found the combination of crispy chicken, fresh romaine, Caesar dressing, parmesan, and prosciutto messy but surprisingly balanced. The Italian sub was another standout, packed with high-quality meats, cheese, and fresh toppings on soft bread. Portions were generous across the menu, making it easy to split a sandwich or save part of it for later. The pizza is also worth trying, with both classic and specialty slices available throughout the day. We tried the buffalo chicken and vodka sauce slices, and the crust had a satisfying crispness while still holding up well under the toppings. The chicken parmesan and mozzarella sticks also made good additions to round out the meal. Service was friendly and efficient during our visit, and the food came out quickly even with a steady stream of customers. The restaurant can get busy during lunch and weekends, especially after gaining attention on social media, so finding a seat may take some patience. Parking around Davis Square can also be challenging, making public transportation or walking a convenient alternative. Overall, Mortadella Head lives up to its reputation as one of the more unique sandwich shops in the Boston area. The combination of generous portions, creative menu items, quality ingredients, and a fun atmosphere makes it an easy place to recommend. Whether we stopped by for a viral chopped Caesar sub or a slice of pizza, it is the kind of spot that is worth adding to your list. read more

From wild pizza combinations to over-the-top sandwiches and salads loaded with #allthemeats, this place knows how to liven up the Davis Square restaurant scene. You've got a choice of round pizzas or square slices in the case. Go early when the case is full and you'll get to choose among 10 different varieties. Do not miss the Buffalo Chicken pizza. Hello, ranch drizzle. I see you. The Antipasto Salad is soo much better than your standard deli joint. It's packed with prosicutto, salami, capicola, and of course, mortadella. Even if you're not a meatatarian, the salad options are full of veggie-friendly ingredients like poached pears, honey figs, marinated tomatoes, and giardiniera. There are over 30 types of sandwiches, ranging from classics like Chicken Parm and Reubens, to the more hip combos like The Plymouth Rockstar (super Thanksgiving-esque with that fried stuffing and cranberry sauce) and the Pastrami XXX with a fried egg and french fries shoved right between a sliced deli roll. And in case you don't think pizza or subs will fill ya up, add some of the Italian-American starters to your tab, or check out the wings, fries, and pasta bowls. You're definitely going to need to check this place out. If anything, just to say you ordered the Italian Pu Pu platter. I mean really, who calls it that? So good. read more
