My new favorite spot in Davis for Italian. The pizza is my favorite in the city, they get the crust just right, and the sandwiches are on point...and HUGE. A small was easily enough for a hefty lunch or 2 smaller meals. Both pickup and delivery are quick and efficient - cannot recommend this place more. I heard about this colossal Italian sub at Mortadella Head because I saw Dave Portnoy's review of their pizza, and bc YouTubes algorithm is a thing, more Mortadella Head vids were in my feed and one was their Italian sub! I had to have one!! The bread was soft and fresh and the meats were so thin and soft and tasty! $13 sub was gigantic and delicious! Happy with the food, unhappy with the service. I've been a customer here pre-COVID and the food is always 10/10. Recently, unfortunately, the place is mobbed and they need to work on appropriate staffing (easier said than done I'm sure!) I ordered online - est. pickup 6:58pm. I arrived at 6:55, waited in line until past 7, there were Uber eats pickup people skipping the line, etc. etc. I was told my order wasn't ready yet at 7:05 and stood to the side. I waited an additional 20 minutes for my 2 subs and when I inquired again I was told it was being made next. It's okay if this happens once but it is happened to myself and friends a few times. Maybe a separate window/register for online pickup, a bigger place, or more staff could help. I don't know why, but I got lettuce and tomato on the Cosa Nostra that I waited 25 minutes for ! then it was so soaked by the moisture of the vegetables, the bottom of the roll split apart The food and sandwiches are not even close to what they present in the Videos! Surprise, surprise! They didn't even have two of the sandwiches on the menu that they show the videos for !! and the chicken was not true cutlets!! Forgot to do this review but my friends and I constantly bring up our terrible experience here so figured I would do it now... Came here 2 months ago to get the caesar salad sandwhich that was viral on tiktok at the time. Called it in and drove 45 minutes because it looked so phenomenal and i'm a sucker for a caesar salad. The gag of it was when we got back to the car to feed we pull out soggy salad on TWO UNTOASTED HOT DOG BUNS we still ate them but felt ILL after... Waste of gas and my time. read more

Hate to be this guy but my recent visit to Mortadella Head left me thoroughly disappointed. Despite the enticing promises from their Instagram feed, the reality fell short. The frozen bolognese lasagna was particularly disappointing, with barely a teaspoon of bolognese to be found. The sandwiches, which we eagerly anticipated, were mostly bread with scant fillings, notably lacking in chicken cutlet. With such potential for delicious subs and lasagnas, it's disheartening to see Mortadella Head skimping on portions and quality. I hope they take this feedback to heart and make improvements for future patrons. This place has been on my radar for years and I finally made it in! There are not many places around here other than bakeries that do square pizza, so I was excited to try it. I decided on doing the slice special. It is chef's choice you get 6 slices, but pay for 5 which I thought sounded like a great way to taste a variety! When I made the order the girl on the register had no idea what the slice special was, but maybe she was new. I showed her the item on the menu and another girl came over to get the order ready. Service was fast and was in and out within 10 minutes. When I parked and opened up the box I was WOWED! The pizza looked phenomenal, but realized I had 5 slices instead of the 6 that was advertised. Bummer, but still excited to give it a try. The slice with ricotta and I believe it was meatballs was my favorite. The pizza crust was buttery and crispy, but soft on the inside. The slice portions were HUGE so make sure you are coming here hungry! I also loved the small crispy pepperoni. Definitely not your average pizza spot and worth stopping in. read more

It's a great pizza place. Gourmet Pizza Hut with clever fun names and great toppings. For all the bad reviews, this is a pizza place. Get the pizza. Pizzas have styles: Italian, New York, Chicago and a bunch in between. Go somewhere with the style you like. I'll admit, the place could benefit from focusing on consistency. It could be my imagination but sometimes the pizzas just don't seem to have the same "wow" factor every time and sometimes seem smaller or like they were made in a hurry. Most places struggle with that unless they're mass produced or just serving the standard toppings so I give them a five stars. read more

Oh boy! Definitely not the kind of sandwich that you can eat in front of other people. I love tomato sauce on my chicken parm, but it soaked through the bag, the wax paper, and tin foil. The bread was completely soaked through. The chicken was warm, but the cheese was freezing cold and not melted. I tried to eat this at the picnic tables in Davis square a few minutes after getting it, and it's just not possible. Very disappointing. Won't be back. read more

After having tried dozens of pizza places in the Boston area since moving here in 2005, this place has become my number one spot. Italian style, no cornmeal on the bottom, delicious sauce, high quality cheese. It's the perfect slice. Highly recommend the Jimmy Two Times if you mess with eggplant. It's phenomenal and unlike anything I've ever had before. Rustica also is crazy good. Prices are fair for the quality you get. Huge fan. read more

When I lived in Somerville, I was smitten with this place. I loved The Baller sub and its crisp out the outside yet soft on the inside, fresh bread and the fried lasagna sticks. Now the lasagna sticks are off the menu and the bread on the meatball sub is back to any old plain hot dog roll with too much garlic. Well this is the place I've been waiting for these past 12 years. Not many get that 5th star but this is one of them. The Cuban crisis ($13) is an eye popping, soft, half baguette stuffed with shredded Porchetta and mortadella slathered in mustard and mayo, layered with pickles and dripping with Swiss cheese. This sandwich is the size and forth of a large forearm. Not yours chicken legs but mine, beefy and strong. The sandwich holds together well and makes barely a mess despite the fact that it is literally full of messy things; Porchetta, cheese, mayo.... Pickles crunch. Mustard cuts through the unctuous meats. The cheese is melted perfectly. The Porchetta is sublimely rich, porky, shredded well. The mortadella is griddled lightly. This sandwich is a sight to behold and even more a mouthful to enjoy. Mortadella head does what it claims to do and it does it well. Can't wait to return and order everything else. read more

Best pizza! Our daughter and son-in-law introduced us to this delicious pizza when we visited! I have not found a good pizza away from home until now. I indulged in THREE pieces it was so good! The dough was light and fluffy, like homemade bread from the oven, and the toppings just right not overload (cheese and pep basic). My daughter said the menu offered a variety of items to choose from outside of pizza and everything they tried so far was super tasty. YUM! I want to like this place. But after 3 experiences, I have to say no. 1 time: tried walking in. It was a s*** show. 2 times ordered online delivery: 1st time: kinda slow, and "gee, why aren't there many toppings on this rather expensive 18" pizza?" 2nd time: delivery was incredibly slow. Pizza was barely warm. Also, it was a margarita that looked like someone accidentally plopped some random drops of cheese. Frankly, they looked like blooms of mold of a CT-style cheeseless pizza. PS: I paid EXTRA for EXTRA fresh mozzarella. Oh, PPS: I paid for pepperoni to be added to my margarita. Total pepperoni content = 0.0%. The dough is tasty. The sauce is tasty. I was so excited to try the chopped wedge salad sub and drove over an hour to try this place. I arrived and was greeted promptly, however it went downhill from there. I attempted to order the chopped wedge salad sub and was told "we don't have that." I was a little surprised as it was posted on TikTok...but ok, so I ordered the chopped cesar sub (3 of them for our party) and one slice to share. The girls working the front of the house seemed to be distracted and rather unfriendly. It took over 40 minutes for the order to be completed which is fine, however, the food just wasn't great at all. The slice of Buffalo chicken pizza was quite possibly the worst pizza I've ever had. It was heated up, and we attempted to eat it as soon as we got in the car. It was hard as a rock and impossible to bite into. I'm not sure how long it had been sitting, but it was terrible. Now for the subs, they were flavorful but thrown together sloppily and the rolls were again very hard, I'm not sure if this is due to being in the oven too long or what the case is. The other issue with the subs, is the chicken is nothing like what was shown in the TikTok video, it was like a couple of chopped up chicken tenders. I was disappointed! I saw the video on Facebook. Drove up from FL and searched them out. Ordered the turkey caprese because it looked so good in video. Got home with it and it was a plain turkey sub. I will start off with the location. It is located in a busy area of Somerville, MA. The place itself was tiny, no air conditioner. This made for the eat in environment to not be so comfortable. Limited selections of beverages, the waters at the counter where you pay were not even cold, only offering Pepsi, diet Pepsi, ginger ale, and root beer. Food, the big mozzarella sticks there were ok. Not hot and not gooey, I'm going to say it is due to the size of them, marinara sauce was watery. So I wouldn't get those again. The boneless wings were hard and dry. Not pleasant taste nor to chew, may as well have been chicken Jerky. The steak and cheese sub, I prefer my rolls not toasted. I guess you don't get the option. Wouldn't get that again. I've tried Mortadella Head twice now and have tried multiple items on their menu: - Fried Mozz - wasn't amazing, probably wouldn't get again - Boneless Fresh Herb "Wings" - delicious, more like popcorn chicken type pieces. Decent flavor, I liked them a lot haha - Davis Square Disco Fries - not bad, but not enough gravy - Carbonara Fries - delicious, but I wish there was more "sauce" of some kind to balance the cheese and other toppings - Mayflower Fries - Delicious and filling! - Commander in Beef - Delicious! (Cold Sandwich), House Potato Chips were great - Caesar Salad - Standard / Typical Salad - Patate Pizza Slice - AMAZING, it was so good and I want more all the time - Pepperoni Pizza Slice - Delicious and great! We tried more but I can't remember the rest, but I look forward to trying more! The people who work there are great and super friendly. Not much for parking and the place is small with some seating. Disclaimer: I'm not from Boston, so I don't know much about the local pizza scene. But I was with two people from Cambridge, and they both thought this place was great. The vibes I liked immediately upon entering. Slightly hipster, a big dimly lit, pizza on display (and only $4.50 per slice). My friends and I were feeling hungry and adventurous, so we ordered a small fried chicken and broccoli rabe (forgot the name of that special), a small patate (potato, prosciutto, rosemary, white sauce), and the calamari fries. The fried chicken and broccoli rabe was great. I wouldn't really say the chicken was fried; breaded, perhaps. But it was still good. The broccoli rabe helped cut the richness of the white sauce and chicken. The patate was good, too, although our consensus was that it wasn't as good. It was just a lot richer--creamy, fatty, flavorful. That may have also been affected, though, by the fact that we'd each eaten 4 slices of pizza and a bunch of fries... I'd still recommend this pizza, just don't eat a ton at once, haha. And the fries were yummy, too! Crispy calamari on crispy fries with a drizzle of a acidic sauce that helped cut into the dish. Our only complaint was the poor coverage of the sauce. Perhaps tossing the fries and calamari in the sauce or having it on the side for dipping would allow for sauce to reach every bite. Prices were as you'd expect for a nice meal. I could see, though, the $4.50 big slices as a good lunch option, if you want something cheaper and faster. All in all, a great meal with good service in a cool ambiance. Would come back. read more

I've been meaning to check this place out since it opened, and I finally got around to it. My friend and I went for lunch on Saturday. The shop itself is a little small with not much seating. We arrived just before the lunch rush and were able to find seats without a problem. The murals on the walls and ceiling give the place a super hip vibe. We both ordered pizza by the slice, and it was great! The man who took our orders was incredibly helpful and friendly. We both ordered the La Grassa, which was cheese pizza topped with bolognese. The crust was the perfect thickness, and it had great flavor. I was a little skeptical of having bolognese on top of pizza, but it was a perfect compliment. The menu is really expansive, ranging from different types of fries to subs to pizza. The only downside to Mortadella Head is that it's a bit overpriced, but that can be expected from just about any restaurant in Davis Square. Overall, I would return if I was wanting good pizza for a quick lunch! read more

Ummm this place is insanely good- massive, creative slices that seem expensive at first until you realize 1 is more than enough food. I had to take half of one of my slices home because I was so full, and that is a rare occurrence for me. I appreciate the large variety of vegetarian options (unexpected for a place named after meat), they even let you add eggplant parm to a salad as a "protein" instead of something like grilled chicken, so easy and smart. We were excited to try out Mortadella Head after peeking in their window the last couple weeks. With a name like "Mortadella Head" we were worried there wouldn't be many options for vegetarians, but were pleasantly surprised at the variety of signature veggie pizzas, and the handful of other veggie menu items. We got the Tropic Thunder pizza & a Greek salad. Called in for pickup, order was ready on time and plenty warm. Noticed in store they had a ton of daily specials (or at least not on their menu online) of sicilian slices, too -- I think 4/7 were veg, and all looked really good. Got home, really happy with the whole order. Greek salad was more than just greens (yay!) and had tons of olives, which I loved. One note - it seemed pre-dressed, but I'm pretty sure that was just from the olives & pickled peppers, etc -- the house vinaigrette that came with offered nice additional flavor when added. Tropic Thunder pizza was an interesting blend of flavors, very sweet/salty/pickled with the little bit of sesame as a curveball. We're excited to see what the other unique combos are like too. Maybe worth mentioning we didn't get any napkins or forks with our order -- we actually really appreciate that bc we end up with so much disposable stuff from takeout and delivery that we don't need & it's usually terrible for the environment. But if you are ordering and do need some, don't forget to grab them on your way out of the store. Food was incredible. Everything tasted great. On the other hand, the service was awful. I understand in a busy environment it can be stressful but the woman working the counter taking people's orders, handing them out, etc. was incredibly rude and not helpful in any way. She even yelled at one customer because he apparently rolled his eyes. I work in food service as well and if I ever treated customers the way I saw her treat them in the hour and a half I was there waiting I would be fired on the spot. When I finally got my order I noticed there was no side of ranch dressing, which I ordered and paid for, so I asked her for it. Her response was that it was going to take a while to get that because the kitchen would have to stop making the food and go get ranch dressing, when I have gotten a side of ranch dressing from there before and it came in a little tiny to go container. read more

I'm picky about CSS but this one is the best in Davis (and trust me I've tried them all) The dressing is great and the chicken is very tender and cut into small pieces which I like.
