I traveled over an hour to get to this shop, as I had a recipe that required a flour that I could only find at this shop. The price online was $6.50, but the gentleman at the counter charged me $8.95. When I asked about the discrepancy he said that online price was wrong. I travelled all that way so I paid the price that he gave me. I went to the website after I left to double-check, and I am still able to purchase it online for $6.50, so I don't think he was being honest. There was none of the flour that I was requesting up front, so he went to the back to get it. The bag he gave me is unlabeled, so now I am not even sure if I got the correct product, since I can't trust him. I was so happy to support a local business, but feel very taken advantage of. I can't speak to the quality of the products, they may be very good, but I can tell you that being lied to, does not feel great and does not make me want to come back to this shop. read more

Capone is absolutely my favorite Italian market!!! I was born and raise in Italy and Capone is where I go when I am homesick! I tried almost everything that they sell and I have never been disappointed! I would really recommend to try their mushroom lasagna!!! Truffle pizza!!! and their home made fresh ricotta (omg!) but honestly everything is delicious. My husband loves their empanadas. They are frozen and you can cook them in the air-fryer in less than 10 minutes. Last time I was there I was able to find fresh bufala mozzarella! It was absolutely the best! This place is truly magical. Boston dwellers I am jealous of the close proximity you have to their store. However, I am so pleased they ship to places including dear old Maryland! This business has been family run at the helm of Al Capone (yes, that's truly his name) since 1985 and it is a well oiled machine. Every product, food item, and detail has been thoughtfully procured, arranged, and prepared with the best quality ingredients and care. Their website is fabulous and supported by Shopify. It's easy to navigate and broken down into organized and sensible departments. Charcuterie, cheese, quick meals, etc! You want it? They've got it. Prices are dare I say very reasonable also. They hand cut their pasta, and the frozen foods are damn delicious and perfect for someone such as myself who is not a cook, is lazy, and has a new baby at home. For those unwinding after a long day at work who want to enjoy a hearty pasta dish? Say no more. They have options suited for many palates and diets. Ingredients and 'use by' dates are stated on the packaging and are simple but that's what makes it so great-no filler and unhealthy additives. Concise instructions are also labeled on the packaging for the non cooking folk, so if you mess it up then you must not be able to read. They make their own olive oil, offer deli items (like made to order sandwiches) and sell imported Italian products at the store. We have enjoyed the prosciutto di Parma, parmigiano reggiano, upscale pepperoni pizza, margherita pizza, meat lasagna, black pepper fettuccine, gnocchi, essence of tomato sauce to name a few. Currently awaiting and salivating over our next shipment! Shipments arrive precisely packed and sealed with dry ice to preserve the food. In addition, there is a great set election of homemade style prepared food such as lasagna and other dishes ready to grab. Great selection of Italian and Argentinean foods! This little shop offers pasta, pizzas, meats, cookies, and frozen goods to take home. It's your one-stop-shop for specialty food for dinner. We bought some empanadas to take home to bake and they were tasty! We also bought some imported Argentinean alfajores. These are delicious cookies filled with manjar/dulce de leche and sometimes covered in chocolate. The staff here were friendly but not pushy on selling. The prices are pretty reasonable! read more

The best "fresh" pasta and Italian grocery mart in town. I am sad that my fianc'e left his Union Square apartment and now i only go there twice a year versus every Sat. He said the owner can be gruff but he's always pleasant to me. When you're not sure which pasta and sauce combo to get, consult the board. It lists all the pairings of pasta and sauce. Grab the sauce in the fridge and ask for the amount of pasta you need in the front. Easy peasy. We have been getting their olive oil for years and the tip is to reuse the bottle. Your price will be discounted. Do yourself a favor and get emapandas and cannoli when you exit. read more

If you are not familiar with my stance on carbs, here's a refresher: I adore them. Fresh pasta is my valentine. I don't like to think of this as a weakness, but rather a testament to my fine character. And I like to stop by Capone's now and again to keep my moral fiber in check. With an array of house-made shapes, sizes and flavors of pasta alone--not to mention the cheeses and meats and oils and all manner of imported fixings for a killer antipasto--it's as if the North End was picked up by a cyclone and dropped right into humble Union Square. If I dreamed it, don't wake me. Anyway, the hours are challenging for me (I really have to plan ahead as they close by 6 on weeknights) but the black pepper tagliatelle is as nourishing for the soul as a good old fashioned revival (amen, brothers and sisters) so it's well worth the effort. read more

I rarely make my way to Union Square but when I do, I always stop by Union Square Donuts (best ever) and Capone Foods (also best ever). I can't really eat dairy, so it's amazing that Capone's has two vegan ravioli flavors: mushroom and sweet potato. Mushroom is my favorite! Here's a tip: the frozen ravioli takes less time to cook than what the label recommends (at least for the vegan options). I think it takes more like 3-5 minutes in roiling boil water to cook rather than the 8 minutes suggested on the bag. I also always get my olive oil from here. The owner offers samples of different olive oils and will recommend the perfect one based on your needs! The deli meats are great as well! read more

For the first few months I lived in Union Square, I walked by Capone's often and never really considered going in. That changed when the Boston Globe interviewed Mr. Capone about the supposed hipster renaissance happening in the Square. I got a chuckle out of his salty answers and decided I had to find out what the fuss was about. Fast forward to now: when we buy pasta, the only kind we buy is from Capone's. I'd much rather spend money on delicious, fresh, thoughtfully made pasta, ravioli, shells, and tortellini than dried mass-produced supermarket stuff. We've yet to be disappointed by anything we buy here, and as mentioned in other reviews, Mr. Capone always has a joke or a suggestion to go with dinner. The frozen foods are excellent--I love to treat myself to stuffed shells and chicken sausage on rainy days. They have some beautiful olive oils and really top notch cheeses. My favorite thing in the shop is the pasta/sauce chart. It's so helpful! It lists each pasta/tortellini/ravioli they have, as well as the sauces; then you can read the chart to see which sauces go well with which pastas. We've had some incredible meals thanks to this chart! Lemon and black pepper pastas come to mind, the spicy tomato marinara and the sundried tomato pesto, gouda tortellini and red pepper ravioli...my mouth is watering. Don't come in talking on your cellphone. It won't be appreciated by the hardworking staff. read more

I've been to fresh pasta vendors before but this hands down was one of the best pasta dishes I can remember AND priced comfortably enough for me to be able to come back again and again. I held off reviewing Capone's for forever, because I felt I might be a little biased toward it. It was the first Italian gourmet store I went into when I moved to the area -- even before shopping in the North End. And I spent way too much time shopping at Capone's, stopping in at least 3 times a week. It didn't help that I lived a half-block away. Now that I've moved away from Union Square, and after a few years of trying Italian delis from the North End to Waltham, I can conclusively say that Capone Foods is the best specialty shop in the Boston metro area, bar none. This isn't to knock other stores -- most are really good, too. But a lot of love and dedication goes into everything Capone produces -- from the homemade ricotta, to the pasta, to the fantastic frozen entrees. And yes, you can get great cooking tips from the owner. It depends, of course, on how busy the place is. On Saturdays, everyone behind the counter is scrambling to fill orders. But if you come in at a quieter time, Al will happily suggest ingredients and ways to prepare just about anything you ask about. Al used to host an annual tasting dinner -- featuring Capone's ingredients -- at the still-mourned Eat and later at the Independent. I'm not sure if that still happens, but he is now occasionally leading a cooking class at the store. I've taken more than one class -- it's an enlightening and fun time with recipes I'm able to easily reproduce at home. He lists the classes on his website, or you can just ask him the next time you visit. Even if you aren't interested in a class, or recipes -- just go. There's lots of good food in there. read more

This place is so neat. The pasta and sauce selections are extensive and I gotta say the white clam sauce and pesto is the best i've had so far. I thought it was neat that they make their pasta fresh..did i mention the pasta was also yummy? I highly recommend these crispy almond cookies they sell. Its on the last row of shelves by the register, on top, if your facing the register turn around and look to your left and up (unless they moved it it should still be there) i forget the name but its a big box, you can't miss it. It tastes great with tea or coffee. I don't drink wine but the owner said it also tastes good with certain sweet wines. I think the man I usually see when I'm there is the owner and he's this really soft spoken, super nice man and he'll give you suggestions on any of the products like what to try with what. World Class. The unassuming facade hides a temple of gourmet paradise equal to the trendiest, priciest and douchiest deli-type shops in other neighborhoods and cities. Olive oils, cured meats, cheeses, pre-portioned pasta sauces, handmade ravioli, expensive delicious things in little jars. It has it all. I especially like the fresh pasta (I usually get fettucini), the "quick tomato' marinara sauce, and the prepared frozen turkey meatballs. Kay it's not the cheapest place. For a half pound of pasta, sauce, and a hard cheese it will run you around about $14. However the variety of pasta is more diverse than a certain other pasta place down the road... the prices are similar if not cheaper on occasion The empanadas ($2.50 for small, more for large) here are okay I don't really think now that much I got a nutella empanada which hand more ricotta than Nutella. I think maybe next time you have to go for the savory it might be tastier. The pesto sauce is to die for it is branded Capone a pesto sauce super cheesy absolutely delicious one of the few places also not to mention in Boston we can get squid ink pasta for reasonable price very good. It's very very diverse and what it sells and is a far better value than the north then to top it off the stores clean the management is very very nice and you can see operations from where you're standing in the store usually very very cool. read more

This is the place I go to when I'm just not sure what to make for dinner. Pretty much anything related to the Italian food spectrum lives here. They have a long list of homemade pastas, all of which have brought a smile to my face. They taste fresh, which is always a nice addition to a pasta dish (or actually any dish for that matter). They have a freezer full of your italian norms, as well as some empanadas that are much, much better than they should be, coming from an Italian specialty store. My true love is the rack o' imports, that is stocked high with olive oils, marinated mushrooms, jarred and seasoned eggplant, and some delish anchovies. You can make a dream pizza from this stuff. Top all that off with a hunk of cheese and a selection of their meats, and you've got yourself a serious party. read more

Great place. We usually go to the one in Cambridge on Mass ave, but it's nice to have an alternative. They have excellent pasta and sauces. There is a chart that tell you what sauce goes best with which pasta. Makes it easy to figure out. They also have a nice selection of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and some other tasty items. Let me explain to you why Capone's is of such value to you if you have never heard of it before. It is easy to make mediocre Italian food. A lot of things can go wrong when your ingredients are few but need balance. This is why lots of people like to go to restaurants (probably for most food in general). And this is where Capone's saves you. Suppose you do not know anything about different types of pasta and sauces. Capone's has a lovely chart for you that will pair every type of homemade sauce and pasta (and it is ALL homemade pasta and sauce here, and the recipes are superb) so that you do not fuck things up. This is especially helpful if you are cooking for someone else but do not cook often. Because technically, heating sauce and boiling water counts as cooking to untrained eyes. Now, the other thing that is so important about Capone's is that you can buy genuine delicious Italian products (like olive oil, which must be of a high quality if you hope to achieve any sort of deliciousness, it is the cornerstone of your cooking!). BUT. Unlike shops in the North End (sorry, North End), these are not tourist prices. These are go to the market prices. Which is fantastic for products that are actually A LOT better than many expensive bougie fake Italian restaurants in the Boston area. A final star because there is even dessert! read more

This store is a gem and it worries me that more people don't shop here. You can buy Italian speck and Spanisih Serrano ham in 5-6 slice packages for $3-4. They have fresh mozz and ricotta too. Plus frozen items to stock your freezer that are tasty. They even let you taste the olive oils before you buy. Love this place. read more

I can't say enough good things about Capone Foods. It's simply the finest establishment in Union Square. My wife and I have been coming here since we moved back to Union Square three years ago. The fresh pasta is incredible. We tend to get the lemon pasta and use it with a homemade pesto. Capone Foods also has a great selection of imported foods, incredible meats and wonderful olive oils you won't find in other stores. They also have a great cheese selection and the prepared foods are great. We especially love the homemade mozzarella and recently bought a pre-made lasagna that was superb. Beyond the quality of the food I will say that the staff is amazing. Mr Capone is a wonderful guy who is always willing to chat about the way to prepare a meal and his staff is hard working, knowledgeable and super nice. I love their ravioli! You can buy a tub of ravioli that's a good 3 adult dinner servings, more if you're not a big eater--for $6. And it's fresh. And creative, and tasty! The grocery store ravioli tastes nothing like this, and isn't any cheaper once you factor in the size of the portion! They have a chart on the wall to help you mix and match sauces and pastas. A sample of their ravioli types: spinach, cheese, lobster&crab, smoked salmon, butternut squash, shrimp, vegan. In addition to fresh pastas, they also have a nice selection of cheeses, and imported Italian products. I bought a gourmet balsamic vinegar (pricey, but fantastic) that has become a staple in my kitchen. You can look through the doorway to the back and see them working in the kitchen. This is an awesome little shop that I'm sure I will be going out of my way to go to fairly often. 1) They have AJ Stephan's ginger beer. I think that between Capone's and the Neighborhood being on the same street it is a damn good thing that I moved out of Somerville! I would be broke but terrifically satisfied! Capone's is an Italian speciality store with all the good stuff - cheese, meat, pasta, cheese, cannolis, olives, cheese... Capone's has a good selection of different filled pastas and lots of Italian meals in the freezer section. They also have lots of delish sauces, everything from pesto to plum tomato w/ porcini (one of my faves). They are great at helping you pair your pasta with a sauce that will wow dinner guests (or tempt you to eat the whole pound if you are dining alone!). Last time I was in Capone's I saw that they even had Lobster Mac and Cheese in the freezer - next time, I will be splurging for some of that! read more
