I won't gatekeep this place but a part of me wants to! I stopped by after seeing the reviews and was in the mood for a sweet treat. Of course I got the cheese bread, then also tried the brazilian donuts (with banana) and the banana cake. The cheese bread was the perfect classic texture and salty. The donuts were chewy and you could taste the banana. But the cake was the star for sure!! Super moist, strong banana flavor and not too sweet. I will be back for that cake, and next time will even get two! The workers are super friendly, and I am grateful she recommended the banana cake to me! So we picked up some dinner from across the street at Momo's and had parked our car directly infront of Modelo's at a meter spot. It was raining buckets when we left with our dinner so we ate it in the car since we already paid to park. After we finished we noticed quite a few folks running out from modelo's with bags and also ducking rain to get to their vehicles. Then i noticed the sign and looked through the window to see what they had...intrigued we found ourselves counting to 3, ducking rain and running inside. I must say the staff here is soooooo nice. Super sweet and spent the time to explain what was inside a lot of their pastries and food items. I felt welcomed here, and their pricing is affordable and fair imo! We first tried their cold cake (condensed milk and coconut) i loved that it felt fresh, moist and NOT overly sweet. The cheese bread we had was fab, had a nice almost rice flour like chew and flavor was just simple yet addicting we got 9 of them. Coxinha chicken and cheese was recommended by the staff so we had to test that. It had a flavorful doughy outer, with chicken and cheese in the middle. The texture was different than what i was expecting (i.e. like and empanada) but i enjoyed it and we killed that. We then got 2 of their donut like pastries (Sonho) with filling one with a custard and the other with a Nutella or chocolate like filling. On top we got the coconut topped danish like pastry (forgot the name) too. Haven't tried those yet because we were so full but they look scrumptious. I'm about certain they'll also be good! For the things we did try, i like that they don't use ingredients that give the dishes too much artificial tastes or sweeteners. Got take out from across the street and it was raining cats and dogs earlier today so we booked it back to the car. We were parked outside of Modelo's, in a meter parking spot. We decided to go inside after contemplating for 5 minutes if we wanted to go out in the rain again, and I'm so glad we decided to check Modelo's out. The staff was really nice and super helpful with explaining the pastries we had questions about. We decided to try a bunch of their pastries out and were not disappointed. The chicken and cheese coxinha was not like anything I have ever tried before and it was so good, as well as super filling! My favorites from what we got were the cheese bread (Pão de queijo) and the condensed milk coconut cake. The cheese bread is incredibly addicting and has a nice chew. We ended up getting 9 of them to bring home. The coconut cake was super moist and not too sweet at all. It was perfect. **They also have plenty of seating here, including a couple tables & window seats!! We still have a couple desserts left to try out that we didn't get to earlier because we were so stuffed but I have a feeling that they will taste just as good as everything else we have tried from here. 10/10. read more

Came here on a Saturday and it was fairly busy. You order at the counter- it's a no-frills kind of spot and it's not exactly aesthetic. It's not the type of cafe you'd want to hang out in all day, but that's ok because you go here for the food. We got a breakfast plate, tapioca crepes with shredded chicken in them, pao de quejo, a type of Portuguese corn bread, brigadeiro, and a Portuguese donut with Bavarian cream inside. This Brazilian bakery has been one of my favorite places in Somerville for over 5 years. They have everything. I usually get the tropical açaí bowl or a black iced coffee. Other things I'd recommend are their cakes, cheese bread (Pão de queijo), Coxinha with fish filling, and their salad bar (which is pay by weight). They also have a butcher/meat section, I've gotten their sausage there which is worth trying. Theyve also got a little grocery section with South American products and candies. I believe this is also a family business, over the years I've seen different family members working, and everyone is super nice. read more

I was really excited to see a place in the area that served both arroz con leche and flan. But I've never had a worse rendition of either dessert. Towards the top of the flan tasted like pure condensed milk and the overall flan was way too strangely creamy. I've never had a bad flan until today! The arroz con leche didn't come with cinnamon which is new to me so I tried it before and after adding some of my own... but nothing could save it. Highly recommend! I love coming here time and time again. My husband and I both love the iced coffee and the pao di queijo (small cheesy bread balls) - they are amazing! We get some whenever we are going for a walk or longer drive. We also love their breakfast sandwiches, the bacon is so thick and the cheese so gooey! The pastries are also very yummy. I'm slowly working my way through the pastry case, I have run in to some that are too sweet for me -- but otherwise am very happy. This is also a small market that sometimes has a staple or two I may have missed when at the grocery store. Overall, it's definitely worth a stop and don't forget to ring the bell on your way out! read more

There is a burger here called the X-tudo. It has: hamburger cheese bacon ham a fried egg lettuce tomato potato corn vegetables ALL served on a delicious Portuguese style sweet bun. I am relatively new to the Magoun area (less than 1 year) and am still getting used to the notable Latino/South American population and influence there. One such place that always interested me is Modelo... I knew it was a butcher shop of some kind but because of the lack of English on the storefront, I was kind of turned off (plus I don't often shop at Butcher shops, more of the type to go to the supermarket and settle). This past weekend I went in and was utterly impressed. They have a great selection of quality meat (much better than Stop-and-Shop) but, more importantly, have a full-service market there (not "grocery store", but all the basics you need). That was a huge discovery for me, as I now know I can just walk down the street if I run out of essentials or want to pick up a steak for a small dinner, as well as veggies, sides, condiments, etc. Everyone there was very friendly and helped me choose some meat on the two occasions I've been there. Will definitely be a regular spot for me as long as I stay in the area. read more

The cheesy bread (pao de queijo, best of luck with the pronunciation) was amazing. For myself and my date, we paid $15 for brunch. In his omelet, he didn't specify which type of meat....so he was given EVERY OPTION (his heart nearly stopped out of joy and due to overload). I got a couple of over-easy eggs with toast and potatoes (to go with my pao de queijo) and I couldn't even finish my food. We had enough food for 2 meals, and for only $15. Each meal included a drink as well (coffee or juice). It has been a long time since I have been somewhere that I didn't understand what people were saying, but it is how you know the food is good. Almost every person that walked in the door while we were eating was speaking Portuguese. Enjoy your life a little more and have some pao de queijo and some exotic juice. This is the best place to eat in Magoun Square! It's a bustling bakery/cafe with the best food Brazilian cuisine has to offer. Come in for morning breakfast and have some pastels (turnovers with meat and/or cheese) or empadinhos (cheese-filled pies). They have great coffee; if you want a regular cup of "joe" or an espresso, latte, or cappucino, they'll make it for you. And desserts! They have wonderful desserts and cakes. Want lunch or dinner? The sandwiches are delicious and the soups will fill you up. The bread is baked fresh daily - the pao (bread) is fantastic. If you try the pao de queijo (cheese bread), you'll want it every day! It's always busy and very popular, but they always have fresh food for you. The waitstaff is very helpful and friendly - if you don't fala português (speak portuguese), the crew speaks great English and will happily describe anything that you think looks good. I love this place. They have a lot of options and most things are very cheap. The risole is a little oily, but still very good. Pão de queijo sometimes are old, but since there are not many places that offer it, and it's cheap, I give it a pass and buy it often. Their sandwiches are HUGE, and cheap for the portion. I'm vegetarian and there are not many vegetarian options (it's Brazilian after all), but if you ask them to make something without the meat they do it. This place is really close to my house but I've never actually stepped inside...until a couple of weeks ago. I was taking the bus home and they had closed off Broadway for the fireworks display, forcing me to get off at Magoun Square and walk the rest of the way. However, my husband's tummy was grumbling and we were literally right in front of the door to the bakery, so we decided to walk in and get a snack. As other reviewers have stated, their cheese bread was really yummy. I couldn't believe how soft, warm, and fresh out-of-the-oven it was. I also tried this pear-shaped fried chicken and cheese pastry that was to die for. It reminded me a lot of the "frituras" I get at local Dominican places, only lighter. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was a chocolate dessert I got that was essentially a giant ball of chocolate covered in chocolate sprinkles. I'm a huge choco-fantatic, but even this was to sweet for me, and my teeth were aching later! I have to disagree with the reviewer who said this place is a hole in the wall. I know they didn't mean it in a bad way, but this place is quaint and clean, and sort of an average looking bakery to me. I've driven by this place many times, but never went in for whatever reason. But last weekend a Brazilian friend brought some sausages, short ribs and steaks from here and HOLY HELL. Good Stuff. So a venture inside was planned I was fully expecting to be treated like a Gringo Estupido, but that expectation was dashed by a young guy behind the butcher counter who greeted me to a "What's Up, Dude". He answered my questions about what the marinades were and how to cook and such. Even the non-English speaking butcher seemed to accept my horrible Spanish. All the meat selections looked amazingly fresh. I settled on a few pounds of Marinated Chicken Hearts and two Marinated Butt Steaks. This being a Summer-Time review, my favorite cooking method is grilling with hickory wood chunks. And I highly doubt a Brazilian Butcher would disagree with this method. It's very, very easy to drive or walk by Panificadora Modelo and not think anything of it. I can assure you though, it is absolutely worth it to stop inside, as this has to be one of the best bakeries in all of Boston. Liked: The iced coffee is amazing (and I don't like coffee) The prices are extremely cheap Everything I've tried has been truly unique and delicious Disliked: Seating is tight during peak hours If you're like me, you know that the best food comes in small, ethnic hole-in-the-walls. This Brazilian bakery serves as a perfect example of this, and you know this as the clientèle is almost exclusively Brazilians. Importantly though, the wait staff does speak fluent English, and have always been very friendly and helpful. But onto the food. For under $5, I typically buy two items that are superb, and that I've never seen anywhere else. The chicken and hearts of palm Pastel ($2.50) is a generously portioned Brazilian fried turnover filled with seasoned shredded chicken and hearts of palm. The combination is really well balanced, and the hearts of palm add a depth and consistency usually not found in a fried food. And because this is a bakery, I get the "Sonho" dessert ($2), which the owner told me means "dream" in Portuguese. Its basically a donut-like pastry filled with a creme that exceeds any superlatives I can think of at this moment. It's THAT good. Lastly there is the iced coffee. Let me start by saying this: I don't drink coffee. I don't like coffee. But I LOVE Modelo's iced coffee. At $2, it far exceeds anything you can get at Dunkin', as this is Brazilian coffee with lots of cane sugar mixed in. Panificadora Modelo is simply one of those truly special hole-in-the-wall places that you feel great about when you find. I honestly cannot recommend this place enough. This is one of my go to places to order from on Uber eats! I have been very happy with everything I've ordered. I lived abroad for a short time in Brazil during college and still often crave açaí. I order from here every time the craving strikes. This stuff is good! It always comes nicely packaged and the toppings are always very fresh. Another amazing fruity option is the passion fruit juice. I highly recommend it here! I'm also a huge fan of their cheese bread and always order a lot so I can snack on it over a few days. I live 2 blocks from this heavenly bakery. Personally, that is within dangerous proximity. I can walk away with $20 worth of coconut balls, sweet corn bread and coconut cookies... to last me a mere day. Seriously, I drive past this place every day and fight myself to not buy cookies. The ladies here are super nice and their prices are extremely reasonable. They are not the most descriptive about their menu items, but we have never disliked anything we have gotten from this place. It's also fun to just buy one or two of everything and go wild. If you are huge fan of coconut, this is your joint -- if you are not, be cautious about the baked goods. read more

Visited the cafe on a spontaneous whim with my wife. We will definitely be coming back again! The gentleman behind the counter (looked like he might have been the owner?) was SO friendly and excited to share his food with us, all of which looked delicious. He gave us HUGE free samples, even going so far as to freshly fry a variety of savory treats for us (again, on the house... we weren't asking for it!). We ended up getting the corn meal with pork rib soup, a passionfruit/mango smoothie and a huge slice of tres leches cake. Everything was so good!
