First off, charging $9 for a couple of carrots feels like a personally targeted attack--especially when she handed me dirty, broken carrot stubs and insisted they were "actually better for me." Look, I get the whole anti-food-waste movement, but I am a simple product of the modern supermarket. If a carrot looks like it lost a fight with a lawnmower, it's destined for the trash, not my dinner table. Add in $20 for 2.5 pounds of Asian pears--complete with free organic squirmy roommates--and the optimism is next-level. But the plot thickens! Apparently, for every item you pick yourself, you are legally obligated to go into the farm store and match it by buying more stuff. Here's the catch: the store prices are completely top secret until you hit the register. You just stand there in a tranquilized farm-daze until the cashier casually drops a $16 price tag for a dozen eggs and $12 a pound for chicken. Pretty sure those chickens were getting nightly massages and eating caviar. I walked out of there $90 lighter with a tiny bag of five items and a sudden desire to start my own backyard coop. I respect the hustle, Lauren, but my wallet and I are breaking up with this farm.

Folks, they have a coffee share, a pasta share, a meat share, a mushroom share - goes on and on. The fruit is amazing! Service is exceptional. If you need it they get it for you. The nicest humans you may ever meet. Ambiance is smart and ethical business people meet hippies. The best food and the best people. In case you are not familiar with the co-op thing, members pay a certain amount of money to join the co-op, and in turn, get a bounty of fresh, locally-grown, mostly organic food items each week. It cost me about $600 for the season, and that includes weekly baskets of fruit, vegetables, cheese, and herbs from mid-June to mid-October. It also includes one fall basket and one winter basket. The quality of the food I've received thus far has been amazing. Everything is super fresh and super delicious. We've had everything from bok choy and salad turnips to bell peppers and blueberries, and it's all been outstanding. Plus the cheese! Oh, the cheese. It's all been SO good. There's been goat cheese, gouda, raw cheddar, monterey jack - the list goes on. We've also gotten a couple different types of vinegar from the Herb Farmacy too. Every week brings with it a new surprise. The best thing about being a part of this CSA (other than supporting local farms, the benefits for the environment, the quality, etc) is that the different types of items have forced me to go beyond my comfort zone and try new ingredients. I never would have bought Swiss Chard, for example, at the grocery store, but I've discovered how good it is since getting it through my share. So it's opening up all sorts of new culinary worlds for me. I know there's a pretty serious wait list for next season (at last count, I think they said there were 140 names on it), but if you are looking for a CSA in or around the North Shore (they have pick up locations in Melrose, Salem, and Marblehead every Thursday), check it out!

The eggs are the best, we don't buy eggs in big grocery stores anymore. They have so many food items that they make at the farm or bring in from other local businesses. Additionally, they have a handful of farm animals that are so fun to see! Mini Horses, Goats, Pigs, and a cat (it doesn't like dogs but just doing its job protecting).

I tried to do this but some of the baby goats are more like teenagers so they were getting pretty big. The yoga instruction was good and very suitable for the goat environment. The goats were moreso food driven then they were curiosity driven (which made this a bit different from puppy yoga) but still a cool experience overall. I think $30 is a good price for the experience and it's cool that the petting zoo is included as well.

Not cheap (location!) but the vegetables were definitely fresh. One punnet of cherry tomatoes was really interesting with different shapes and colors. The green cherry tomato was super delicious! I'm glad I put together the salad from Stillman's. My guests enjoyed it!
