This is going to lose me all pizza review cred, but pickles + pizza slaps. It slaps so hard that it makes pizza from Hot Box good. Generally their food tastes like what I imagine Ellios tastes like fresh from the factory. Like, it's not bad, but it still tastes like you're eating the box it came in. But slather that bad boy with pickles and hot peppers and you got a stew going. Don't listen to the Italians - vinegar and cheese were meant to be together. This is the kind of unholy union that makes America great. I would advise eating it fresh, though. No sitting laces inside, as this is located in Bow Market in Somerville. The seating is outdoors only so nice weather required. Service was normal, minimal interaction. Waiting for the food was a tad longer but that is because the food is made fresh on the spot. I got the super beef threeway (it was nothing special as I am from the North Shore), my partner got the Phuct Fries (these were good) for fries being slathered with sauces they were still crunchy. I've seen so many posts of hotbox on social media and was really excited to try it, however it didn't really live up to the hype. I tried the pickles, classic cheese, and barbecue chicken pizzas. They are known for their charred edges, and it can be quite crispy and delicious when it's not 100% charred on a slice's crust, but it can be overwhelmingly charred and bitter sometimes. They were thin pizzas, but also kind of wet. The chicken on the barbecue chicken pizza tasted kind of old/dried out. The classic cheese, or overall base cheese/sauce tasted pretty decent. The pickle pizza didn't really taste like pickles, but more of the pepper topping. If you are nearby and craving pizza, this will do the job, but if you are looking for something REALLY delicious, I'd look elsewhere. But, it's still worth a try. read more

The pizzas are personal size, but totally perfect for two people to share and walk around at Bow after. The pizzas are thin but with a firm crust. I really like the texture, as it holds on its own without being floppy. The flavors are a bit limited though. I've tried pepperoni and the pickle pizza. The pickle pizza is definitely my favorite, but watch out for the spice! The roast beef is offered on sesame seed roll or onion roll. I prefer the soft sesame bun. They lather the roast beef in barbeque sauce. I've had it fresh and reheated the next day, and the flavor is still there! We had pickles... on a pizza! These pizzas are perfect to share between 2 people and have a great flavor, while the pickle slices add a slight crunch. We also ordered the junior beef which was sliced roast beef on a soft sesame seed bun. I loved the slightly spicy gravy. It'll be messy to eat. And it'll make you happy. We ordered and were told that it would take around 15 minutes to be ready, so we went back to Remnant Brewing to enjoy our beers. After 15 minutes, I went back and had to keep waiting about 10 minutes. It was quite chilly outside, but the door was propped open to let out smoke. Even on a Sunday night, there was a steady stream of people ordering as well as Postmates orders being picked up. Great to see their business is doing well! And also good to know that you should expect to wait for your order (We hadn't planned on this, and our comedy show was starting in a few minutes, which was a bit stressful). I love the North/South Shore theme. This place screams Massachusetts with a fun twist (just look at the oregano "dime bags"). Plus, the food pairs perfectly with some of Remnant's beers like the Tangerine Kush and Dream Pop. We order from hot box (strictly the pizza) all the time and I just came here to write a review about their inconsistency and lack of care that seems to go into whoever is actually making the pizzas. If I were the owner I would want to know that toppings usually are haphazardly thrown onto the dough, the pizzas are NEVER cut all the way through, and they're usually undercooked. When hot box first opened my partner and I were obsessed. Being from the south shore I was thrilled to have crispy, bar pizza right in Somerville. Quality of not the ingredients but the assembly and cook have steadily declined. I ordered the vegan pizza. I asked 2 different employees if it had nuts, because I have a mild nut allergy (cashews, pistachios, walnuts). Both said there were no nuts. I get the pizza, take a few bites, and immediately start having an allergic reaction. There was pesto on the pizza, which has pine nuts, but I'm not allergic to those, so I'm guessing it was whatever the vegan cheese was made out of. Cashews, maybe. This makes me so sad to write this, but Hot Box just isn't what it used to be. I was a huge fan when they first opened, recommending them to all my friends. And everyone agreed Dat Roni was so freaking good! Dat crispy crust, dat perfect char, dat feta, and dat roni. Mmmmm perfection. I was all about that North Shore 'za. And I want to say it was around spring it started to go downhill. But I kept ordering from there because I figured it was a pandemic-related issue or maybe there was an "off day." My last 6-7 orders have each time been a little further from its glorious past. First it was a bit soggy, then the next order was too greasy. That's fine, I just asked for "well done" and blotted the pizza with some paper towels. But then it became suuuuper greasy and made the crust soggy. This last order was just burnt (not charred) and way salty. I think the quality of the ingredients may have gone down. I'm not positive. This is tough, because I have my suspicions that this pizza is frozen, there's a taste that is reminiscent of grocery store pizza... and if you turn over a slice (I didn't get a picture of it) there's holes poked in the crust, which you see more with frozen pizza... this is not proof, I could be way off.. just a hunch. BUT if it is, and it's considered "fast food pizza" going up against Dominoes and Papa Johns? Then it smokes them both by miles. As far as pizza goes, this is pretty damn good.... and I'm a pizza snob. Consistency seems to be there as far as the cook of the pie goes. The bottom is a little doughy (though the second time was slightly more golden brown than the first time I ordered). I like the crispy dark edges, and the feta is a nice touch. The real show stopper is that honey mustard. I love honey mustard anyway, but this is really good. It's like a drug, super addictive. Well, being from the South Shore, I really wanted to like the pizza here. I ordered the cheese pizza three times. I liked it one of those three times, but even then it was a bit "off" taste-wise for bar pie. They are edging close to making good bar pizza, but they haven't quite got there yet. Consistency and quality control is poor. First time it was cooked fine. Second undercooked, cheese/sauce ratio off. Third time it was overcooked on the bottom. Tweak the recipe (perhaps visit Lynwood or The Next Page Cafe or something for inspiration...) and train the staff to make it the same every time.
