I've yet to find a Somerville delivery pizza joint as reliably delicious as Hot Box! We've lived here for eight years, and constantly rotating between "meh" pizza spots trying to find "the one". I love hot box and think they produce a delicious roast beef sandwich. The buns are nicely toasted with butter and they are generous with their sauces. The beef is sliced nice and thin and they pile it high. This isn't a sandwich that looks pretty and you'll inevitably make a mess but the experience is worth it. It took me way too long to try out Hot Box! I ordered the pepperoni and pickle (with half mushroom and onion) pizzas, and they were absolutely delicious. They don't skimp on toppings... in some bites, I even had multiple layers of pepperoni! I thought the pickles would be spicy, but they weren't at all, which wasn't disappointing as they were still very flavorful. Their pizzas are oily, which is how I love them. I see some complaints about the small size and how burnt the pizzas are.. and I have to disagree on both points. A pizza is $9.50 to $13, which is around the same price as other restaurants that sell individual size pizzas (Blaze, Oath, etc...), not to mention the ones here are not thin crust! The bottom may be brown/black, but it gives the crust great flavor without the burnt taste. I'd say one pizza is enough to satisfy one alone or to share with a friend or two as an app/snack. I consider myself a bit of a pizza snob, and I really enjoyed Hot Box. Give them a shot if you haven't already. Union Square is a great spot in general, and this pizza joint just made it that much better for me. read more

As a south shore guy at heart, I wanted to see if there really could be such a thing as South Shore Bar Pizza north of Boston. So I ordered this delivered. Verdict? Very good! Pizza wasn't bad. The only thing that left a bad taste in my mouth was the kitchens attitude. I came in trying to order other things (burger, roast beef, etc.) and anytime I tried to ask for something the woman said SORRY WE RAN OUT. It's obvious they didn't run out. The kitchen had already been broken down and they had closed all the stations. (This was an hour before close) It was clear they didn't want to cook anything for us. It was a bummer because we had our hearts set on this. The ONLY thing they said was available was the pizza. Since we were hungry, we went to the pizza by default. If you don't want to serve the rest of the menu to customers maybe advertise that. The full menu was open and the burger special was on full display. Apparently, if you don't give this guy 5 stars you can expect a non-stop torrent of comments on your review as well as personal messages from the owner. So just keep that in mind if you're thinking of leaving a review. I've never witnessed a grown adult throw such a temper tantrum. It's OK for what it is (South Shore bar pizza). I got the pickle pizza and liked the toppings. It was also spicier than I expected in a good way. I think this just isn't the type of pizza for me though. Pizza is probably my all-time favorite food and I might eat here again, but I think I just didn't know what the style of pizza was going into it. I was kind of hoping this might be the pizza to blow my mind and make me love overcooked bar pizza, but it wasn't. I can't believe I haven't seen pickle pizza in more places though. It's a great idea and it worked! I'll try the roast beef next time I'm drinking at Remnant. EDIT: WTF? Dude.....3 stars is totally fair. "Tarnish your reputation"? I loved the pizza from here and it was big, but enough to share or if you're like me, eat it all by yourself lol. Located in the Bow Market it's the perfect place to grab a pie and chill. They have about 5 varieties of pizzas all made to order and they also serve roast beef sandwiches. My friend and I saw pickle pizza on the menu and we knew we had to get it. It was amazing! Not too much pickle so it wasn't overpowering. It had a great spicy kick to it from the ghost peppers. But my favorite part had to be the crust. It's chewy and crispy at the same time! I think they let some cheese get in between the crust and the pan so the edges get that melty crispy goodness on it. It was the perfect size for 2 people to share for a meal. We also got the special sauce on the side which seemed to be some sort of spicy mustard mayo. WOW. This place is awesome!! We splurged today and tried all of the things: 1) Grilled crack breakfast sandwich with extra bacon (of course extra bacon). This 3 cheese, bacon and egg combo is so good that we had to fight our kids just to get a bite. 2) Pepperoni pizza and white pizza. Both amazing in their own way. Have to get the special dipping sauce to really seal the deal. The cyst is burnt around the edges on purpose. Expect it. Love it. Eat it. 3) Roast beef sandwich 3 ways. If you never had a true north shore roast beef I feel sad for you. This sandwich is as authentic and delicious as it gets. The meat is so tender you can leave your teeth at home. Will not be returning because of how bad the customer service was. I waited at the window for 5 minutes at least and kept having workers look at me and continue to ignore me. I assumed that maybe I was in the wrong spot to order . A genuine question since there were 2 different doors. I asked and was given some of the worst attitude by Jose S I think the name was. I never call someone out by their name but this man was incredibly rude. He continued to ignore me standing there and then said something along the lines of " clearlyI am busy why can't you just order online." I did in fact try but was a little confused so o just decide to go up since it seemed more efficient. He told me 20 minutes and I waited there to the side. I thought I would get a get of some sort since I gave my number. I waited about an hour. Then I asked if it was ready . Which it was. I don't know why he could have not told me when it was ready if I was standing right there and I could not get notified any where else . Overall , felt a very uneasy vibe and made me uncomfortable . I was so excited to hear that the owners of Mike & Pattys were opening a new restaurant concept at Bow Market in Somerville! Hot Box is definitely one of the most popular food joints at Bow Market, I mean, who doesn't want some delicious pizza and roast beef sandwiches?! Talk about comfort food! I love the pink red/pink neon signs and the overall theme of Hot Box. It's very "hip" and modern. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. Service is efficient. My personal favorite on their menu would definitely be the pepperoni pizza. It looks and tastes absolutely amazing! I'm such a big fan of thin crust pizzas, but the ones here hit the spot! They also have an interesting pizza where they add pickles to it, and I'm definitely planning on going back to try that. Everyone needs to check out Hot Box in the Bow Market asap! read more

I'm a local and a South Shore bar pie fan, so I love the concept of Hot Box and was psyched to try it. We ordered a plain cheese which had a good balance of sauce and cheese without being super greasy, and enough for a tasty and substantial snack for 3 of us. The bottom was a bit too burnt/black for my liking though- and this coming from someone who gets her bar pie extra crispy, so I usually am a fan of well-done-ness in this type of pizza. I think the key is well-seasoned/well-worn pans, so maybe this will be resolved in time the more the pans are used- or maybe it was just a timing issue because it was a busy day with lots of orders? I'd try it again though, since it's nice to have this kind of pizza locally without having to trek to get it (although it's always worth the trek to Town Spa IMO, which is my personal bar pie mecca). It would be cool if they played around with different toppings too (Town Spa's linguica crumbles are heavenly and legendary), since their menu right now is short and sweet. read more

I had a terrible experience with Hot Box. To get the obvious out of the way, the pizza was just bad. I grew up on the south shore and this pizza was a bad south shore pizza on its worst day. None of the crisp or butteriness you're looking for from a good south shore pie. The cheese and sauce ratio was wrong. I was so excited to try this place and get a taste of comfort. If you're looking for the same, don't bother. I dropped $40 on delivery for 2 bar pizzas because I was willing to splurge for the taste of home. I should have known better. To top it off, I ordered delivery and when the pizza came a slice had already been eaten. Of course we didn't catch this until we had already dug into the first pizza. Disgusted, I called the store in hopes of some resolution and I was curtly told to take it up with the delivery app. I ordered through the Hot Box website which directs you to Toast Tab. I placed the order as a guest. The confirmation email then said my order was being delivered by DoorDash but with no link to any tracking information or to view my order in DoorDash. So now I have no way of following up with Toast or DoorDash because my order doesn't exist under an account in either system. In the confirmation email, the directions explicitly say to contact the store with any problems. Maybe if they're not willing to take responsibility they should change that language. I don't know if I'm more disgusted with the pizza, the delivery driver, the customer service, or how complicated the ordering system is that it allows the restaurant to just pass the buck and not give the customer any way to get their money back after an unacceptable experience. Get your pizza somewhere else. read more

I eat the pickle pizza from Hot Box about once a week and I have no regrets about it. I love that the crust is kinda burnt around the edges (apparently that's part of the South Shore bar pie tradition) and the cheese ratio is perrrrfect. I usually split a pizza - it comes in one size and even though it's supposed to be a personal pan pizza, half is a good meal size. Which means that I can split dinner with a friend and we each only pay like $6 plus tip. I ate a whole pizza myself one day but that's because 1) I was starving and 2) because this pizza is best right out of the oven. Of course I'll eat day old pizza but I think something about the crust in this pizza makes it best when hot. Pro-tip: ask for the secret honey mustard dipping sauce! I tried their roast beef once and it was really good but I can't justify eating a sandwich when pizza is available. The one exception is a few weeks back they had a one day special meatball sub and I'm a sucker for meatball subs so I tried it. I hope it makes it onto the full time menu because it was delish. I've been meaning to visit for a while and my first time did NOT disappoint. I had my 10 year old nephew in tow (a notoriously picky eater) and he said the burger special was the best he'd ever had and described the cheese as "ooey, gooey, and delicious". I myself had the north shore super and it was on point. It's the details that count, like the toasted bun that kept all that "ooey, gooey" goodness from destroying the bun. I went with a couple friends tonight and we were not terribly impressed. Fortunately for the restaurant owner, I think much of the issue is easy to fix with some training. Three of us ordered separately, so we have some pretty consistent data. I ordered a burger. The one with a bunch of kinds of cheese, bacon, and sauteed onions. It was tasty, but would have been better without the onions, which should have been crispy, not soggy. I was deciding to be adventurous tonight, so I had been planning to order the onions in the first place, so had I been the only one ordering here, y'all would have earned a 4/5. The burger itself was tasty, the cheese was great as advertised, and I had no complaints about the amount of bacon. The primary concerns I had were: - Employee did not speak to me. They didn't ask if I wanted my burger cooked a certain way, they didn't ask if I had any modifications or food allergies, they didn't even try to upsell me and get me to buy something else. They kinda glared at me while I ordered. Honestly, had this been anywhere but a $10 burger place, that would have warranted a 3/5 alone, but here, not so much. I don't expect an employee at a $10 walkup burger joint to do anything other than successfully cook an edible burger. They did that, so they get at least a 4/5. The communication wasn't a dealbreaker. That said, soggy onions weren't ideal. I would have been upset had I ordered no onions though, because undoubtedly they would have put onions on it. One of my friends ordered the breakfast burger. He specifically did not want mayo because he can't eat it. He provided that information, and the guy at the window apparently didn't do so much as acknowledge the request. His burger had mayo on it when he opened it after we had walked away, and he couldn't eat it. Not only that, but he ordered before I did, and his name was never called. He walked up 5 minutes after I got my food and they gave him his food, having never called his name. (And it's not as if he has a difficult to yell name or anything, and we were standing in front of the place the whole time). One of my other friends also ordered a burger, but I'm not sure what kind. It came out just fine, to my knowledge. Anyways, the combination of poor service with my friend's bad experience means this place just scraped a 2/5. You'd be a solid 4.5/5 if your employees communicated properly and were polite to customers. Hopefully they were just having a bad day though.
