The interior gave me diner vibes - very laid back and comfortable. At 11:30 it was pretty much empty. It seems like most people get their food to go. Service was prompt and friendly. I ordered the Tofused Banh Mi - tofu, pickled veg, basil, cilantro, and a fried egg on a brioche bun. Definitely not a traditional banh mi but very tasty nonetheless! This has turned into a classic and is among my favorite sandwich shops in the area. Over the years, I've had the atomic meatloaf, the gobbler, the beef on weck, the pastraminator, the hush puppies, the chili, the chili cheese dog, and the deviled eggs. They manage to create consistently balanced flavors that are classic but often with a slight twist. All of the menu items I have had have been created and executed with thought and care. A couple of notes to share. The chili cheese dog is absolutely great if you are eating in or very close to the restaurant but gets soggy if you are ordering delivery or need to wait a bit before diving in. The beef on weck might be the only beef on weck in the city. The au jus is excellent and just about any french dip would be proud to have it as an accompaniment. The horseradish hits just right. The caraway and salt makes the roll. But, the beef always seems to be overcooked and dry. In an area known for excellent north shore style roast beef sandwiches, which have a lot to share with the beef on weck, it's curious that this sandwich isn't downright fantastic considering the quality of this shop's overall menu. A long time ago, I was out at a fancy dinner and asked the waiter for suggestions on where to eat around Boston. He offered up All Star Sandwich Bar. I went a few weeks later and really liked it. I started going all the time. Then, probably because I had a son, I just stopped. Well Monday, I went back, and it is a shame I went so long without eating there because I really enjoyed my sandwich. I got the Mr. Miyagi (love the name) which is Sweet chile ginger hoisin glazed pulled pork, Thai basil, cilantro, English cucumber, pickled daikon radish, carrots, fried egg and sesame sriracha aioli on a grilled sesame brioche roll. It was excellent. My wife got the cubano which I have enjoyed in the past and she said it was very good. My son had a grilled cheese and we all shared an order of fries. Other sandwiches I liked back when I used to go more often include the Beef on Weck, The Atomic Meatloaf, and occasionally a funky burger. Even though there is table service, the atmosphere is casual and the service is relaxed, so come as you are. The sandwiches are about $15 each and come with coleslaw and a pickle. Inman Square isn't the easiest place to park but there is a lot on Springfield Street that sometimes has spots. Bottom line, if you want a good, not-so-ordinary sandwich, All Star Sandwich Bar is a good place to go. If you like it, you can thank that waiter who told me about it, whoever he was. read more

I own a property in Cambridge on Cambridge since 1986. Last Wednesday I visited All star sandwich for a sandwich. after ordering my sandwich and soda I sat on a street side table but did not enjoy the atmosphere so got my sandwich packed to carry it to my building to eat it in the comfort of my own space. I took a bite of the sandwich but the taste was unusual so I added horse radish to enhance the taste but the second bite was even worse forcing me to run to the rest room to vomit. two bites too many I dumped the whole package of sandwich, pickles, horse radish into the dumpster. Only the lemonade was somewhat palatable. . I give my lunch 1 start - 0 for the sandwich and 1 for trying something native to upstate New York. Tried the Beef on Weck today at lunch. The menu online: Beef on Weck House roasted beef, extra hot horseradish, real au jus on a kimmelweck bun (warm and thin, sliced to order). Served with coleslaw and dill pickle spear. My sandwich was terrible. Cons. The bun was stale. So stale that when I picked it up, most of the salt and caraway seeds fell off. There was no horseradish. There was no au jus, no coleslaw, no pickle per the menu. The beef was so over cooked and dry that after 3 bites I threw $14 worth of sandwich in the trash. Pros - They offer Beef on Weck. It was still warm. If your menu says what is in/on a sandwich, why not make that sandwich? read more

I had been here a while ago and thought I'd try again- stopped in last night to get a few sandwiches, I remember it being good. We got there around 5pm on a Sat night. No one was inside eating. We ordered take out. After picking out a few sandwiches, I saw the prices rung up were about $2 more than on the menu. I made a comment and the woman rudely said, they raised the prices due to covid. Thats fine ( many restaurants raised prices) maybe just mention that first? We were about an hour away so I asked for the "dressing/Sauce on the side". I do this most times bc everyone likes different amounts and you can be in control. This is a sibling restaurant of All stars pizza joint across the street. This restaurant offers a huge selection of sandwich/burgers...and you are bounded to find something you like there for sure (if not, just build your own!). I had a chance to try their specialty burger and it was so huge that I ended up having the same burger + fries over my next few meals..and the good thing was..it was still very tasty after reheating it up, too. The price isn't cheap by any means..but I wouldn't say they were expensive either..esp given a large portion size. Try on if you are in the area. It's a casual place to grab lunch/dinner...and I think based on the people who stopped by there...most of their orders were for to gos...so chances are you we'll be able to find some seats to enjoy you meal if you want to find some placed to sit and relax, too. read more

Had another simply amazing Beef on Weck sandwich last evening at the All-Star Sandwich Bar in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before going to a show at the House of Blues across the river in Boston. Beef on Weck is a regional specialty from Buffalo, NY, that was invented around 1882-1885 when a German immigrant baker from the Palatinate region began baking a sandwich-sized variant of a Rhenish kümmelweck roll in the bakery that he and his brother established in Buffalo's German neighborhood. Kümmelweck means "kümmel (caraway) + weck (Palatinate German dialect for roll, sometimes weckerl), and kümmelweck is a slightly toothier roll similar to a Kaiser roll in shape and proportions but baked with a liberal sprinkling of pretzel salt and caraway on top of the roll. The sandwich itself is a fairly simple but amazing thing: just the kümmelweck, a large portion of thinly sliced rare to medium-rare slow-cooked roast beef, topped with a thick layer of horseradish (not horseradish sauce or horseradish aioli). The cut side of the top of the roll is traditionally dipped quickly into a hot au jus to moisten the roll but not make it completely soggy (although many places that serve Beef on Weck now serve the au jus on the side to allow the customer to pour as much or as little as they like onto the top roll before eating - unfortunately this encourages a lot of people to dip their sandwich constantly into the au jus...it's not a French Dip). There's something magical about the combination of the salt, the caraway, the horseradish and the beef that is a classic example of something that is far more than the sum of its parts. I run a strange Facebook group dedicated to this sandwich that started out in 2007 as an exercise in learning how to set up a group on social media. It now has 20,000 members, has more than 200 posts a day, gets 150,000 views a month, and we've located and mapped more than 600 places around the US and Canada that serve this once-local but now spreading king of sandwiches. The All-Star Sandwich Bar's Beef on Weck pairs a massive amount (8 oz or more) of thinly cut, melt-in-your-mouth and extremely tasty beef cooked medium-rare to rare with an amazingly rich and flavorful au jus, horseradish to clear away any allergies and bring tears to your eyes, and a roll easily 5-6" across that had just the right crunch to the crust, a body that was soft and fresh but also dense enough to take the au jus, horseradish, and meat juices without falling apart, topped with a perfect mixture of salt and caraway that had been baked onto the roll from the start rather than glued onto a bakery-bought Kaiser roll. Delicious! Served with a good dill pickle spear and cole slaw; washed down with a Harpoon IPA. The only downside was that when I arrived at 7:30 on a Sunday the staff told me they were only doing takeout from 7:00 until their 8:00 closing and asked if that was OK. I could see that they were frantically filling cups of coleslaw and other things for a big party or to prep for the next day's lunch rush, so I agreed and had a picnic in my car. Otherwise, you'd have a picture of another knock-it-out-of-the-park BOWs from one of the best weckeries in the US. The All-Star Sandwich Bar is anything but pretentious in appearance but they make 21 different sandwiches and 5 different hamburgers, 5-6 specials a day, 20 different sides, and serve beer (in cans ) and non-alcoholic drinks. And, yet, I've never wanted to try anything else on the menu because the Beef on Weck at $14.00 is worth not only the hour-long drive from home but also the horrific search for parking nearby on Cambridge's residential streets. read more

This was our second time ordering from All Star, having ordered from there about a year previously. The first time we ordered the Gobbler, Mr. Miyagi, and Chili Cheese Fries. It wasn't super memorable, but I didn't remember hating it so we decided to order again. Both times we ordered for delivery which is available through DoorDash. The prices are $1-$3 higher per item, as well as fee DD charges, so it's definitely much more expensive to do this. Our food took about 35 minutes to arrive. I ordered the Atomic Meatloaf Meltdown and got the sauce on the side. I dipped my sandwich in it and found it WAY too spicy for me, so I'm glad I got it on the side. Otherwise it tasted pretty bland and wasn't much to write home about especially for $15. WE also got the Friday special of a Fish Po'Boy that was alright. The fish was clearly fresh and served on a baguette. It was decent but nothing special. And again, for $15 wasn't worth it. It also comes with a mustard sauce (not tartar sauce) that I enjoyed. The chili cheese onions rings were good, but I feel like these should be eaten at the restaurant. Sitting in their container they just got all soggy and greasy from the chili. The chili was a little spicy but I liked the chunks of beef in it. Overall, I probably won't go back. The food was alright but it's so expensive for not a lot of food. Maybe if I were int he area my experience would be better at the restaurant, but I won't go out of my way to order from them again. read more

We've taken out from all star's pizza location before and were very pleased. This was our first time trying the sandwich bar and we were equally happy. We got the banh mi sandwichS and they were really yummy. They weren't the traditional sandwiches, they were in a brioche bun but they tasted amazing.
