The haddock tasted extremely fresh & everything was great. They have incredibly fresh coleslaw & pickles. They are known for their wings and amazing desserts as well! A vanishing legend, 1919-2026. But this was my first time being here. Corned Beef Reuben: The beef slices were very thin, so there's not much texture or juice; it was like supermarket ham slices. The bread was ordinary; it wasn't toasted with butter, so the aroma was significantly reduced, but the sauce prevented it from being dry. The pickles weren't too sour, and the coleslaw was refreshing and sweet, which I liked. Pastrami Reuben: Completely different from the pastrami I had in Philadelphia. This is more like a reduced-salt version of bacon slices--firmer and oilier, but still quite fragrant. S&S Wings: Signature chicken wings. The sauce was very generous, creating a strong sweet and sour flavor. The fermented flavor of the blue cheese sauce was also very strong. It might be a bit too heavy for my taste. But the meat was tender, and the batter was still a bit crispy, which was interesting. Egg Benedict: A classic breakfast; a soft-boiled egg can't be bad. However, the potato chunks were totally unseasoned, and the hollandaise sauce was ridiculously sour. Potato Pancakes: A unique recipe. I expected something like hash browns or thin shredded potato pancakes, but they were surprisingly thick. They were fried to a fragrant perfection, soft and chewy inside but with a hard crust. The sour cream wasn't sour enough, and the apple sauce was sweet; I couldn't really accept dipping them in it... Blueberry Pancakes: Blueberries were directly added to the pancakes, a first for me. However, the pancakes had a rather rough texture, and I didn't understand why the sweet ones were paired with sausage (or bacon). The sausage was firm, with a strong ginger flavor--very addictive! It's worth mentioning that many toppings/sauces, such as potato chips, honey, and butter, were just pre-made, sometimes without even being unpacked, which felt rather perfunctory. In short: Huge portions, decent taste, worth trying for nostalgia. However, perhaps due to the recent surge in customers, the staff was overwhelmed, resulting in a less than ideal service experience, especially the long wait for seating and ordering (even with a reservation). If you are in East Cambridge and looking for lunch that is not too expensive, you have to come here. It is a big restaurant, clean, clean restrooms as well. On the menu they have a variety of hot meals, sandwiches, salads, soups. I had the marinated chicken with a choice of two sides. I had rice and there mixture of vegetables; zucchini, summer squash, broccoli and carrots. It was good. My daughter had the crab cakes with coleslaw and rice. She said it was pretty good. She also ordered the clam Chowder which she liked. They didn't serve bread or butter, but it was fine as we were full from our meals. Been here for both breakfast and dinner. I like coming here for breakfast, portions are big. Inside it's old school, no frills, nothing fancy, just food and a place to enjoy company. This review I'm doing is for our most recent dinner. I got a clam chowder which I waited almost 20 minutes for (yikes) but it ended up tasting good. My crab cakes were yummy and so was the rice pilaf and coleslaw. I was full so I took them home. My mom liked her chicken. Again nothing fancy but food is good. I have been to this family owned restaurant many times and I have enjoyed the meals here every time. I went here today with 10 other friends (total) because we heard this Inman Square staple is closing its doors by next month and myself and my friends are sad to see it go. We have always tried to get the server Melanie for our table when we come because she does such a wonderful job of making sure we have everything that we need. As many of the other server do too, our food came to the table ready to eat and enjoyed by all. The meals always come with other sides too so we have always left here satisfied and full. The atmosphere is comfortable and family oriented so it's a relaxing place to eat. I hoped to get some sort of souvenir shirt to wear before it closes its doors but unfortunately it does not sell any clothing apparel. Best pastrami Ruben I've had thus far, Atmosphere: very comfortable, it feels very warm here...not temperature per say but it feels like a warm welcoming hug when you walk in here. Not many restaurants give off this vibe anymore. Parking/location: there is a small parking lot, probably about 8 spots, but there is street parking...though street parking, depending when you go, may be tough as there's bike lanes everywhere now which means less parking. Attire: be comfortable, don't need to dress up Food: for appetizers we ordered the bone in s&s wings and wow, the sour and sweetness of this house sauce is unbelievable. And I say sour first because they really nail it here. S&s is for sour and sweet! Must try, they were so crispy even with the amount of sauce they drench it in. Nan's they don't skimp on the celery which is a plus (I know most people don't like celery but come on). It was a chilly night so we ordered the special corn chowder and I don't know what I was expecting but this was so good. It was a little skimpy on the corn and potato, but it was very good nonetheless. It wasn't as creamy as I expected from a chowder, but they nailed the taste here. The corn beef Ruben is the signature but the pastrami is the most popular- says the waitress....and I completely see why. It's so fresh and delicate. The pastrami is not tough, and it was not overly salty like most pastramis I've had. This dish came with a bag of chips, coleslaw and a half sour and it was a hefty sandwich for sure, no skimping here. We also ordered the turkey dinner special and boyyy they didn't skimp before but this was a meal for at least two! They were very generous with this dish. We didn't make a dent in this one. I didn't know what I was expecting from this dish either but they blew my mind. Actually I did know what I was expecting- two thick sliced turkey and mash and stuffing... but no this was gorgeous. So much more gorgeous than two sliced of turkey. It was big generous globs of mash and butternut squash and in the center...the star. A mound of stuffing covered with thin slices of turkey, so juicy, so moist, so delicious! And the cranberry was just the cherry on top. We didn't have space for dessert but the dessert counter is always packed with delicious baked goods, cupcakes, cake slices, you name it. Pricing: the only price I remember was the Ruben..which was about $18, I think overall the bill was roughly around $72, but keep in mind we ordered two specials. I say it was very decently priced given the amount of food they give. Overall: I highly recommend, this restaurant has been here for decades and I see why. They're welcoming, the food is generous, the servers are polite. It just feels welcoming. We also came during closing time (didn't realize they closed at 1900, we came at 1830) but they were very nice about it (don't worry we left in a timely manner).I say give this place a try if your around the area. This is my normal go to for my buffalo and wings when I want something sweet and heat. I am not sure what they have in the blue cheese either but it always feels like I am not getting enough so basically *Fantastic*. The reason for the 4 and not 5 stars is because I been coming here for years it used to seem they they had the chicken pre marinated in the sauce, cooked and added more sauce now it just seems to be tossed in sauce at the end and it's to much of the S&S, although I don't like them dried every bite it felt like I was swallowing 1/4 of a tsp of sauce. Then we stood in a place that she didn't like and told us to move. When we complained to her about how she treated us she didn't seem to care one bit. You've arrived at City Girl Cafe only to discover a 45 minute wait. You're hungry and that long a wait just doesn't feel like an option. Not to mention, you've already loaded up the meter with a bunch of quarters (2 hour limit, 5 quarters per hour). What to do? Well, S&S Restaurant is just across the street and they are much larger than tiny City Girl, so you are hopeful for immediate seating. The line up for service is over by their deli, and they only seat full parties. After perusing their two page brunch menu and specials, we landed on the following between the two of us: Bavarian French Toast $12.95 filled with cream cheese, strawberry jam, bacon, and fresh fruit (bacon requested crispy) Eggs Maryland $13.95 Homemade crab and shrimp cakes, poached eggs, hollandaise, home fries, fresh fruit, bagel and cream cheese (onion bagel selected, hollandaise requested on the side) Side of Corned Beef Hash $8.95 Coffee $2.95 bottomless - score! Service wasn't perfect. The coffee was forgotten till we provided a verbal nudge. Cream cheese was missing from our egg plate. My water was never topped off, or refilled. Kitchen wasn't perfect. Eggs weren't cooked as ordered. A pool of oil was found beneath the first scoop of hash. Yet it sufficed. The food was pretty good. I liked how the sweet selection came with a boost of the savory in the form of the bacon, though I wished that there would have been a way to replace the bacon with the hash for a surcharge. The french toast were evenly filled, and we each wanted our share of the 3 slices. The accompanying pancake syrup wasn't really necessary. The hash was a good shareable portion of small diced potatoes, onions, and bits of corned beef. The seafood cakes were primarily crab, the fruit cup made of fresh cubes. Sharing plates were provided without our requesting them. Although additional serving utensils would have been nice. Coffee was refilled intermittedly after the initial query as to whether it was bottomless or not, with the original cup accompanied by 5 milks. Ordered an extra lean Tongue & Swiss sandwich on dark rye yesterday to take home after our meal. This review is for the sandwich, not the meal which was excellent. Been eating here well over 20 years and was surprised to see the Tongue weighed out to 3.9 oz and the Swiss (2 slices) to 1.9 oz. The meat was pushed to the middle to make it look good when cut, but there was nothing behind it but bread. I'm used to getting so much meat on deli sandwiches from here that I literally have a second meal for the next day. And the coup de grâce was not receiving the Extra Lean Tongue which I assume I paid extra for (don't have access to the receipt). I was so disappointed by this purchase.
