We were part of a large group (12 diners) for a pre-wedding dinner/party. Except for the couple getting married, I believe the rest of our party were the only out-of-towners dining that evening. This is a pub-type atmosphere with a full-service, large bar serving cocktail specials and a gazillion draft beer options. There is a street-side patio if you wish to watch the people and cars at Davis Square. Five Horses serves American comfort food, and they do a pretty good job serving up their offerings. I ordered the steak tips, and they were OK. They were served Med/rare, as ordered, but they did need a bit more seasoning. Plus one ordered a steak salad, and it was OK. They were pretty frugal with the protein, and it came with an abundance of tomatoes. Another guest split a cobb salad it arrived without some ingredients, like bacon. Other diners stated that their dinners were excellent, so 4 stars seems about right. Even though they were very busy, our table was well taken care of throughout the evening. If I lived here, this would be in my rotation for a brew or two, catch a game, and enjoy a burger. read more

I try not to post negative reviews but I do not recommend the flank steak. I saw it (flank steak, chimmichurri sauce, mashed potatoes, and broccoli) at $29 and said I haven't ordered a steak in while, let's treat myself. Boy was I disappointed, it was literally four tiny slices of beef, about a ladle and a half of mashed potatoes (flavor was great but the texture was dry and it was hard to swallow), and the broccoli was broccoli. The steak was cooked to my liking (rare) but it was room temp and I would describe that serving size as maybe the equivalent of a medallion. Everything else our table ordered (pizza, shepherd's pie, and a burger) looked great but the flank steak is not it y'all. It was missing multiple of the ingredients advertised on the menu (greens mix instead of kale, no brussel sprouts, a teeny tiny dusting of farro)... this was a bit of a bummer, but I think I will survive. They had some yummy sounding cocktails, though we didnt try! If we ever return, we will! The setting is cozy, yet elevated tavern style with bar and dining seating options. There are tons of beer options on tap, some great IPAs and sours available (we got a flight because there are some great draft options). To be honest, when I get food from a tavern it can be a hit or miss, so we were very pleased when the sandwiches we ordered were absolutely delicious! I ordered a caprese grilled cheese that could come with grilled chicken, fried chicken, bacon or no meat. I ordered the fried chicken and it was fried perfectly. I've heard great things about this place for years and finally checked it out last night with my husband and friends. The interior is warm, cozy and inviting! We sat in the dining room at a high top by the bar, which was nice but a little too close to the tables next to us that were large groups so it was hard to hear each other at our table. I'm a beer girl but was bummed to see nothing too spectacular and many drafts allocated to a problematic brewery so I opted for a dirty martini. Food was good; think elevated pub fare. My husband enjoyed his crispy chicken sandwich with tots and I had the lamb shakshuka which was delicious but a bit misleading - on the menu, in all caps was SPICY and I didn't find it to be spicy in the least. The pita bread served with it was fantastic! My recommendation would be to offer this with a full pita and as an appetizer over an entree. Visited on a Wednesday afternoon and enjoyed a fried chicken sandwich with tater tots. The sandwich had some type of aoli as well as honey which tasted great but was pretty messy to eat. I have visited this restaurant 3 separate times over the course of 2025. The reason I have kept coming back is due to the creative menu and the food being extremely good. However, all 3 times the service was simply unbearable. This was with 3 different waiters during the course of these visits. The most recent time, no one checked on us after our food was dropped off by a different person, we had to wait extremely long to place our order, and once finished we had to wait in excess of 20 minutes to pay our bill (even when the server came to our area and saw plates stacked). I am writing this review not to criticize, but to raise awareness to the owner. The business has a really creative mindset and the food is good, but the lack of care from the servers is absolutely going to drive away customers. There are other alternatives in the area that operate under a similar price point and have much more attentive and friendly service. We had a group of four in an impromptu jaunt to watch the Super Bowl. They were able to accommodate us at a high-top table at the last minute, which was helpful. This place is the final attempt at being successful at this location (2 previous attempts failed with other owners, this one has been around for over 14 years now). All in all, it's a fine bar with varied seating, a decent menu, and creative (although weak) cocktails. But the sports viewing experience was mediocre at best. The televisions were out of sync, the audio was 5 seconds off, and the volume was far too low to be an effective presentation of the world's most watched sporting event. The staff couldn't figure it out, so I left in the third quarter. It did not help that the game sucked if you are a Patriots fan. In addition, seating in the downstairs area was extremely uncomfortable due to inadequate heating, even with the double doors. We hosted a wedding shower brunch for an intimate group of 12 last Saturday. We had checked out several venues and selected Five Horses because they were so welcoming, have a great and varied menu, were very flexible as we made plans, and stayed in touch with me in the weeks up till the event. We were seated at a large table in a cozy section of the restaurant and couldn't be happier with the outcome. There were so many menu choices and the food was delicious and plentiful. The entire staff were so helpful and friendly. They all managed to be there whenever we needed assistance, but also waited patiently out of the way when we were giving toasts and doing group activities. They kept the table looking lovely and replenished water and silverware regularly, all with kindness and smiles. We felt very comfortable savoring every minute of celebration, because we were never rushed. We had never been to Five Horses before, and we are thrilled that we made the right choice. We sat outside at the streetery, which had a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Good food, good drinks, good service. There's a reason we continue to return here for each Galentine's Day Brunch! I'm glad that they are able to accommodate a reservation for a larger group in Davis square. This year after always yearning I finally gave in and splurged for the mimosa flight at $19! I love the adorable 4 glasses. I didn't even ask what the flavors of the day were but it looks like it was probably: Blood Orange, Green Apple, OJ and Pineapple. I'm glad I splurged even though understandably it was more expensive than my Southern Comfort meal. I've ordered this meal before in previous years and always enjoyed the gravy and biscuit. The chicken also came in a generous portion. I wanted to make sure I ate enough to pair with the drink so I probably didn't even need the black bean hash on the side, which was also excellent! The service here is always great and they are fantastic separating our individual orders onto separate checks, which can always be a pain for large groups. An added bonus is that they are also usually pros at taking the group photo of the long table to ensure that everyone is visible in the pic! I've been to five horses so many times now it's always in the date night rotation. I always get the street corn nachos because they are just 10 out of 10 delicious and you really can't find any other street corn nachos like this. Great food, great price! Came here for an early Saturday dinner and place was packed! There were no tables available, but we took a seat at the bar as there was some space. Love this spot for a casual, reliable meal. Their menu is relatively simple but you can trust that no matter what you order, you're going to leave satisfied. I visited for Sunday brunch with a group of 7 and we were given a nice, semi-private table in an alcove in the back. Our waitress was great and service was pretty quick throughout the entire meal. We started with the donut holes, which were really more of a deep fried funnel-cake-tasting sort of situation - I probably wouldn't order them again. I did have a delicious vodka Bloody Mary which I ordered extra spicy. I was excited to see that they use horseradish to spice it up instead of just adding whatever hot sauce they have on hand. For my entree I went with the breakfast tacos and a side of harsh browns. Both were great and the portions were huuuuge across the board, we almost all had leftovers at the end. A couple other people at the table had waffles of some kind which were good, but not great. Everything else was pretty much what you would expect from a place like this. We ordered food and our waitress at first was very nice. That's where the nice part ends. All of the food unfortunately did not come out at the same time. We waited for our friend's meal for about five minutes before we decided to start eating because we didn't want ours to get cold. After ten minutes we started to look for our waitress but she never came by to check on us or refill drinks or wait to see if all the food came. After twenty minutes we finally flagged the waitress down. All of my friends and I had finished our food and the final meal never came for my friend. The waitress asked if we "still wanted it. Or wanted it comped". It was so rude considering her mistake and she never apologized. Also comping a meal means you RECEIVED a meal and got it for free. Not that you didn't get the food and have it taken off the check. Of course it would be taken off, we never got it. It might not be the waitresses fault if the kitchen forgot but she never checked on us, seemed to be avoiding the table and then is rude when we finally bring to her attention the mistake. Mistakes happen all the time but can be remedied with checking on tables, apologizing and or being proactive about fixing the issue but this waitress did nothing and still came with an attitude. ESPRESSO MARTINI - Vanilla Vodka, Hazelnut Espresso Vodka, & Bailey's Grady's Cold Brew! CANTINA TURNER - Tequila Blanco, Mango, Passionfruit, Lime, & Ginger Spice Syrup! BLACK BEE - Gin, Blackberry Honey Sage Syrup, Lemon, & Barenjager Honey Liqueur! WINTER MULE - Sobieski Citron, Passionfruit, Cinnamon, Apple Cider, & Lime! These were all such good cocktails, made ably by our bartender (who must've have run up and down the two tiered bar stairs over two dozen times! That's one way to to get your steps in!) The 'Shakshuka' is by far one of the standout items on the menu, and one of the top brunch items in the Boston Metro Area! They did everything right when they designed the interior spaces, and there are numerous spaces, so as large as it is it always feels intimate and welcoming. The bartenders, especially Jake, are top notch - true professionals. I have to say, my real reaon for writing this review is the Shepards Pie. It's one of my favorite dishes so I've had it all over Metro Boston and Five Horses delivers the best. It has flavor (usually bland Irish cooking everywhere else), and lots of it. One of the best brunches I have had in a long time. The restaurant is very dark leather and wood inside, quite classy really, but it was so nice out we sat outside. The French toast chicken sandwich is as decadent as it sounds, the biscuit was shockingly delicious, and the bloody mary flight was a total treat.
