The food is way better than I expected it to be. The Chicken Milanese was in a delectable lemon-y sauce with baby arugula and thin, delicate asparagus pieces on top. So good. My veggie-man got the mushroom fricassee over polenta which was rich and satisfying. This is a place I will SURELY return to! We randomly stumbled upon this place while waiting for Urban Axes and it did not disappoint. We bought chips with French onion dip and Mac and cheese - both were filling and flavorful. However my favorite thing on the menu is the Thin Lassi cocktail. It's the BEST cocktail I've ever had - looks like ice water but is bursting with so many flavors at once including mango lassi, coconut, cardamom, lime, and saffron. I am not sure what this place is like as far as hanging out, and for drinks, it looks like it could potentially be a great spot. Because it's so beautiful inside it's so spacious, the decor is absolutely gorgeous. They have inadequate amount of staff, however during my visit there weren't many people in there so I don't know what the serving ratio is. I would highly advise against the food, I guess I can't speak for all of it but I did have the I'll tell you right now fish and chips and the chicken sandwich and both were very disappointing. The batter on the fish and chips is so greasy and has this weird like taste to it. The french fries are delicious, though. And the crispy chicken sandwich I don't know it tastes like they fried in an oil that's been used way too many times. Our server was okay. I'm not the best at hospitality, but she was attentive. Another thing I disliked was my food was brought out before my daughters, I always think that's weird because I would like to eat the same time as a person that I'm there with. So once my food comes out, I have to wait for her to come out, and then mine is cold. I'm just sitting there. But the server did take note and asked why her food wasn't there at the same time, so maybe it was just the kitchen issue. They have a big drink list, so if you're going to drink, I would say go for it because it does look like that kind of spot. read more

Definitely going to be my new go to spot in the neighborhood for an easy, no frills meal and drinks. I stopped in around 6pm on a Saturday with a group of 5 after we couldn't get a table at Back Bar. They seated us right away despite not having a reservation. We opted for drinks and appetizers only and everything was great. I was surprised by how good the cocktails were. I started with the King Volcano which was spicy and flavorful (though a little too smoky for my taste thanks to the chipotle in the tequila, it almost tasted like Mezcal so if you're into that I'd send it) and followed it up with the Getgo which was my favorite of the evening. We also ordered the calamari and pretzel with pub cheese, both were very simple but well done and exactly what we needed to go with a few rounds of drinks. There's nothing fancy about this place, but if you're looking for a fun, neighborhood hang out with reliable food and drinks, this is the place. Nice bar with wide, round, leather top stools and intimate square high tops surrounded by one long wooden built in bench type seat. Dim lights, candle on table and pretty good music create the perfect date spot and 3 larger screens will appeal to the sports enthusiast. Pub menu, decent amount of beers on tap.... except for the one that Lee wanted. This is a great place for drinks and I love the apps! Food was so good, we started with the calamari and the meze platter which came with marinated feta, black bean hummus, beat tzatziki, pickles, and pitas. Afterwards we decided to split the gnocchi and the poutine. Everything was delicious but the meze platter blew us away and was the favorite of the meal. We had never tried anything quite like it and though we weren't sure what to expect, loved it! In addition to highly recommending that, I urge you to sample some of their cocktails. We started with an Irish Old Fashion and then I had a Crown Heights Sour. The Crown Heights Sour was one of my favorite drinks I've had out, it was a rye base with a red wine float. Great neighborhood restaurant with friendly service They have a new chef since about 4 months ago who has Frenchified the menu and taken it from ok to pretty damn good! We've been here several times before for basic bar food and draft beer. But the menu is definitely up a level more recently. The mussels were A+, plump and juicy with a delicious mustard cream sauce with bits of chorizo. The mustard vinaigrette on the salad was really well balanced and tasty (Chef likes mustard!). Our entrees were good. The rainbow trout was very good. The brisket sandwich was flavorful but a bit dry and could have used some jus. The wine selection, mostly French now, was well curated and of course they still have a great selection of draft beer. They must be doing something right to stay open in this prime real estate right by the future green line stop, right? The Independent serves classic American brunch dishes. This location has a bar side (left) and a restaurant side (right). Last night, I spent a few hours in the restaurant. As soon as you walk in, you'll notice the large amount of dark wood juxtaposed with lighter colored furniture and walls. Started with drinks. They tasted good but mine was heavily iced, detracting from the drink. I was also a bit disappointed that I had to adjust my whiskey choice due to unavailability of my first choice. But, being that it was Tuesday, I can understand they might be waiting for a mid-week delivery. Then, ordered a snack -- fries w/ aioli. The fries were good, presumably double fries as they were nice and crunchy! I was surprised to see that the snack was served and only a few minutes later the entrees were served, living little room on the table. The entrees were portioned well and balanced in flavor. We tried the beet salad with grilled chicken and the chicken basil Alfredo. Both are worth a try! During the meal, we felt very comfortable and not rushed. Our waiter checked in enough, but not too much. The leather chairs in the dining room were so comfy I could have stayed longer! I tried the cubano and the fried chicken sandwich, both really good! The cubano was my favorite, perfect ratio of cheese to pork to ham in a perfectly pressed, crispy bread roll. The chicken sandwich was good but nothing extraordinary. When you eat the sandwich together it works, but individual components felt a little flat. Fries we perfect, very crispy but fluffy on the inside. And the side salad was actually amazing, very tasty and made with love (most restaurants just put some sad greens with no dressing). Usually when service is slow at restaurants it is because the waitstaff, hostess, etc. are hustling. Seriously cannot go wrong with The Indo. Drinks are incredibly well crafted. I got the Crown Heights Sour and the Flannel Channel. Both delicious. For dinner I got the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich with Hot Maple Mustard and it was excellent. I got it with fries, and pro-tip if you're a French Fry dipper like me - ask for the Gorgonzola Dressing on the side. You'll thank me later. ;-) Throughout the years, I continue to love the vibe at this place. The outdoor patio is great and the service is always prompt. We had a new server, who went above and beyond-gave us solid recommendations, and catered to our dietary restrictions like a champ. The mussels (without chorizo) were awesome; fish and chips and cheeseburger were fine (the fries stood out more than most, but burger portions were small). Truly the night's standouts were the earl-grey-infused-scotch-and-pomegranate cocktail, the chipotle-infused tequila, and even the mezcal/amaro chaser that came with my beer. I went to The Independent for the first time ever. It's too bad I waited so long, since this place is pretty fab. My guy and I went Monday for the half price oysters. We got a dozen for $15 -- tried (4) each of the (3) different offerings. They were all deeelicious. Having had some poorly shucked oysters in the past, I was pretty pleased with how clean they were (and they did a good job loosening each oyster from their shell, so no struggling on my end). We also shared a veggie cheese burger, which I really enjoyed as well. I'd definitely return for Monday night oysters and/or date night.
