The food was fantastic! For my fellow vegans, they were able to modify their Huevos Rancheros to be vegan by substituting the eggs and cheese for more veggies. I personally added spinach, mushrooms, squash, and more potatoes and it was DELICIOUS. It seems most of their stuff is cooked in some sort of soy/vegetable oil so it was safe and (very importantly) nothing upset my stomach at all - which is a plight most people with dietary restrictions who have accidentally been served something they didn't ask for have experienced. Note: I was the only vegan in my group, but everyone at the table was raving about the food! The portions are freakin huge, most people at my table were not able to finish their plates and took home leftovers. Our server was super friendly and accommodating! To our surprise, they were able to get us in very quickly with a group of 8 during the Sunday brunch rush - although a big factor there was plenty of luck with the timing of our arrival, so results may vary. 10/10 would go again! read more

came in here on a sunday morning for breakfast. it was pretty busy, as expected, but there were 2 seats left at the counter so we snagged them. I think it was the owner that served us. she was an older woman and absolutely so sweet. kind, helpful, knowledgeable about the menu, and attentive. I enjoyed her presence the whole time we sat. had coffee to start. really good coffee for a diner. they kept coming by with a hot carafe and refilling. for our meals, my husband got the "hobo benedict" which is on biscuits instead of english muffins and has sausage gravy instead of hollandaise. he really enjoy it, and it looked delicious. I didn't even get a bite so that's always a good sign! I got a bacon cheeseburger. i'm notorious for this at breakfast places. I don't really like breakfast tbh. if there is a non breakfast item on a menu i'm ordering it. it was FANTASTIC. i'm serious. flavorful patty and good sized, the toppings were all fresh, the bacon was crispy, and the bun was some kind of buttered brioche thing. I was drooling immediately. the best part of the meal? the fries. they might be the best fries I have ever had in idaho, period. fresh, not too crispy, cut just right. I was in love immediately. I think we found my favorite breakfast place in town. we will definitely be coming before 10 am though. i'm thinking 8 am would be the best time on a weekend. oh, by the way....they have a milkshake machine! getting one of those next time too! read more

I happened to be from out of town on a business trip in Boise for the last two days. This trip wasn't particularly relaxing, as most business trips are not. But I came to Moon's Kitchen Cafe for both mornings I've been here and I have to say it has been a while since I've received such great service. The servers were friendly, attentive, kind, and efficient. One in particular stood out to me - Christi. She came to refill my coffee consistently, checked on me, and let me sit and relax and do some work on my iPad after my meal. She even commented that she liked my sweater (which was a Dunder Mifflin sweater) . It was a relief not having to stress about another thing while on my trip. The food was delicious too! The first morning I got the classic french toast and the second morning I got the half order of the biscuits and gravy. I also got drip coffee (which never ran empty)! My go to breakfast spot in downtown Boise. Open seating. I've only had to wait for a spot once in all the times I've been. If you are only 1 or 2 in a group, you can usually find a spot at the bar. The service has always been excellent. If you go on a week day, it isn't usually that busy. Weekends can definitely get busy. The food is standard breakfast/diner fare and lunch options. (They have milkshakes but IMO they are really over priced. $7.00 for a lg milkshake ). My go to is the simple 2 eggs combo. You can sub a pancake for your toast. I've found this is one of the places that can actually get over medium eggs correct. The red potatoes are really good. Seriously, get them instead of the hashbrowns. read more

Stopped by to just try their beignets and get a coffee. The service was great, and there was available seating when my wife and I arrived. Once we browsed the menu we decided get the Blackened Chicken Omelet along with the beignets. Wow, the beignets were fantastic. And the omelet was thick. Nice portion. Anyone who grew up in Boise over the past six decades has heard of Moon's. It began in the back of the sporting goods store run by Cid and Bernie Moon around the corner on Bannock Street from the current location in the Union Block. I ordered a chicken fried steak, which came with red potato hashbrowns, eggs, sourdough toast and homemade strawberry preserves. The steak was a good size and was tasty. I would have hoped for more flavor from the gravy. It was a little bland. Both the eggs and the hashbrowns were good. The bread seemed better than store-bought and the preserves were also very good. Despite coming in a few minutes after they opened at 6:30 on a Saturday morning, the waitress was super friendly and attentive to myself and a man and his grandson at another table and a man at the bar drinking coffee and reading a newspaper. On-street parking is not available on Idaho Street. However, there is a city parking lot across the street with free one-hour parking. All in all, the current owners have done a good job of maintaining the standards of Cid and Bernie Moon. read more

Crowded space, hidden behind construction. The wait for a table can be very long, but the food is worth the wait. The menu items are unique, making it difficult for me to choose just one thing. That's a compliment! They lost a star for not automatically bringing around coffee. The wait person came around once in a while asking if we wanted anything. This was such a cute spot to eat, its in Boise downtown. I was planning on eating breakfast but the buffalo chicken wrap changed my mind and I ended up ordering that. It came with fries and the portion was a good size. The chicken inside the wrap was very flavorful! The customer service was a bit slow even though they weren't that busy but thats my only complain. I cannot believe we took no pictures. We were so taken with the food and the service, we didn't even think to take any. The blueberry pancakes were the fluffiest, best tasting ever. The homemade jams were so great we took some to go. The omelettes were so big and tasty, even though we overate because they were delicious, we had to take leftovers in a to go box that was enough for 3 more meals. And cannot end review without mentioning our server Christi. She was so efficient and personable it was like she was a longtime friend. What a cool little cafe/diner in the downtown area of Boise! I totally just stumbled on this place after my previous breakfast plans fell through. I felt really torn about my rating of this restaurant. Mainly because the service was so EXCELLENT! I was so pleased with the attention and care I received from the moment I stepped foot into the place. I was greeted multiple times and was continually checked on during my meal. The service was 5 star service. The food though is average to good. I enjoyed my meal, but it didn't blow me away by any means, but I did enjoy it. My biggest gripe is that my omelette came with a big piece of kraft singles on top. I didn't like that. So... 5 star service, 3 star food, 4 star average. read more

Rather disappointing in my opinion. Let's start with the good. Atmosphere is very nice. It's a local diner feel... most tables were full but there was open seats at the counter so took on. Usually the best service. Menu had lots to choose from so I ordered a coffee and the smoked salmon omelette. Coffee was hot and tasty. Thinks went down hill after that. It's been a long time since I worked in a restaurant but when the water glass and the coffee cup are empty, any of staff walking behind the bar should refill it. I asked one and she said "I'll get your waitress". Really??? Omelette came out with fried potatoes. I started on one end. It was very good with a fair amount of salmon inside. Unfortunately only the end I started on was cooked. About 1/2 way thru, the eggs were uncooked in the middle. When I was able to flag down the waitress, her reply was "that's really odd" and walked on by. At least she brought coffee when she came back. She brought the bill a few minutes later and said she had given me a discount because my food wasn't cooked. 10% off for not being able to eat half my food and she acted like she was doing me a favor. I always enjoy finding a 50s style diner in the cities I visit. And Moon's Kitchen Cafe was perfect. There is a counter to sit at, which I always think is the best seat in the house. I loved all the decorations and retro style. I ordered the John Wayne Breakfast, which included two eggs two, two pieces of bacon, choice of potatoes, and a half order of biscuits and gravy. The food came out quick and, let me tell you, that this was the best biscuits and gravy I have ever had! Seriously, amazing! The only downside was that I filled up on the generous portions and didn't have any room left for one of their world famous milkshakes. Oh well, next time!!! read more

I would like to give this place a better review, but the only thing going for it was the waitress and location. First off, way over priced for Boise; sorry, the foods not that good. $13.95 for French Toast, really? I had half an order of biscuits and gravy with a regular coffee, I spent over $15 with a tip, crazy! Second, the food just isn't very good, sorry... The biscuit was okay, but not traditional. The gravy was very starchy, with a raw flour flavor from being under cooked. There was almost no sausage in the "Sausage Gravy", just slightly lumpy flour and milk. Every time we're here, she makes us feel like VIPs, no matter how busy it is, even if we're not in her section. Our last visit was during Tour De Fat which was absolute madness. But the moment we walked in, there Grace was with a smile to brighten up any day. Now that I'm done gushing, on to the food. I only eat Moon Babies. They're tart, sweet and addictive. I tried looking at other things, but the Babies just call to me. My husband however is in love with the burger and sweet potato fries. The former is a juicy perfection, complemented by the latter.
