This place looks great but the food isn't so. I visited my friends in Idaho recently and this was one of the stops. A stop in a list of places i was assured would have great food. The place: The place looks great. It 's like walking back in time. As if you'd just walked back to good ol days or taken a trip to the south. The waitresses are dressed nicely and it all just makes you feel relaxed. The waitresses seemed a bit slow though and disinterested in the customers. I watched some talk/gab instead of waiting on new customers, making the customers wait for one to finally take their order. My friends and I also didn't seem important enough for their attention and almost got tired of waiting before one finally came to our table. Maybe they got a little too relaxed here. The food: I ordered a shake and what i thought would be a chicken sandwich with a nice almond glaze. When the food arrived though i realized I'd made a mistake. The shake - I'll start off with the good news. The shake was great. In fact I almost drank it down without trying the sandwich. The shake wasn't gritty or milky and tasted very smooth. It came in a metal cup instead of a glass which for me is a plus. It meant I got all of the shake instead of just "what fits in a cup". To make it better it came topped with whipped topping. The sandwich - Now for the mistake. The menu advertised a sandwich that had a nice almond glaze. I thought "Oh. I've never had a chicken sandwich with almonds before. I'll give it a try". The menu didn't mention if the sandwich was hot or cold but since it was listed next to hot ones I figured it'd be hot too. To my surprise the sandwich was not hot, but actually a cold sandwich and it wasn't a chicken sandwich but rather a chicken salad sandwich. To say I was surprised is an understatement. The menu had given no indication that I would get a cold chicken salad sandwich, but I figured I may as well go with the flow and try it. It was the worst tasting sandwich I've ever tasted. I thought the almonds would give it a crisp, nutty flavor but they didn't. I thought it being a salad it'd be saved with a mayo flavor but there was none. It tasted like the time I tried cat food as a kid. When i thought "they can eat it, why can't we" then soon regretted my actions. Bottom line - The shakes are great and this was my first time hearing of, let alone eating at, Moon's, but I won't be going back. read more

The service was very good, and my waitress was warm and personable. I ordered the salmon & swiss cheese omelette, which comes with hash browns, toast (sour dough for me) and the homemade jam (I picked strawberry but also want to try the grape). To drink I ordered decaf coffee. They get their decaff from Dawson and Taylor, a local Boise coffee shop which I frequent. So I was quite happy to hear it when the waitress told me that. I was not disappointed! The omelette was OK, but it didn't have a lot of salmon, and frankly I wish they used cream cheese instead of swiss. The sour dough toast was good, but they didn't put enough butter on it. The hash browns were outstanding! Seasoned to perfection with salt and pepper, they were cooked to be crispy on the outside/fluffy on the inside. I will come back just for the hash browns, but will try something else instead of the salmon omelette. read more

Ate breakfast early to beat any crowds. Had a wonderful experience from beginning to end. Our waitress, Mikayla, was exceptional. We requested coffee, and she suggested beignets. That was a great suggestion. They were perfect. Our entrees were also incredibly delicious. (Tip: Order one of the eggs benedict and red potatoes.) Since growing up in Boise, Moons has been a go to restaurant my entire life. I have had nothing but good, delicious food there since I was little. I personally love their omelettes and "moon babies" but everything I've tried has been good. It's a diner so don't expect a fussy, well manicured meal. Instead, you will he getting large portions, that taste like your grandma made it. It's awesome! read more

The milkshakes are a yummy classic and the moon babies are so delicious, a raspberry pancake delight! They always make your orders anyway you want, such as making your bacon crispy or leaving off things. Breakfast was off the charts!! Portions were very pleasing. I ordered the Blackened Chicken Omelet which was incredible delicious with potatoes and wheat toast (with fresh blackberry jelly). The jelly was incredible by the way. I wish I could of substituted my potato for oatmeal or fruit but that's okay. My server was Amber K who was quick, and on top of the game. After being informed that Moon's had changed locations as well as chefs, I decided to give the joint another shot. I'm very glad I did! The new location is darling with décor that is eclectic and lovely and lends to a very all-American diner feel. The service is still as friendly as ever. The food, however, has improved dramatically. I ordered their breakfast burrito with a side of hash-browns. The browns were crispy and everything that hash-browns ought to be; the burrito was meaty and delicious with just the right amount of heat in the salsa. The coffee was hot and fresh (served from a carafe thereby avoiding the burned flavor that is an unfortunate quality of most diner coffee). My dining companion ordered their Hobo Benedict which consisted of a large split biscuit covered in fried eggs, sausage, and cheese and smothered in gravy. He was delighted (which was a relief, as he had previously been disappointed with their gravy). The one thing I would mention is that the service is a little slow, which is expected from a bustling diner and certainly didn't bother me or my dining companion in the least--but may be something to consider if you are limited on time. Overall, a pleasant dining experience at their new and rather charming location. read more

This is my go-to downtown breakfast place. At least on weekdays, this is a seat yourself establishment (rules might be a bit different on busy weekends). The staff people are usually the same few people who work here everyday. They're always kind and swift with service. My coffee cup has never gone dry thanks to their diligent work. My favorite item on the menu is the Moon's Benedict. They toast the English muffin with a layer of butter adding a nice crunch to the benedict. The chef is generous with the hollandaise, which is useful--since it's tasty on the accompanying hash browns. I sometimes get fry sauce to add to my hash browns as well. My boyfriend is a big fan of Moon's Breakfast Monty Cristo. I've personally never had a bite of the actual sandwich, but I absolutely adore the fruit jam/jelly that comes with it. Pros: No wait time like Goldy's has. Awesome staff. Awesome food. Cons: Sometimes it's a bit chilly, but that's easily solved by choosing a table closer to the kitchen. read more

My initial review of Moon's was several years ago. I since had the chance to visit them again and I am SO glad I did. All of the rotten things I experienced before have been written over thanks to a new location and new ownership. Thanks to the downtown parking rules (first hour free in the garage across the street) my friend Shawn and I can make it to Moon's for lunch and back during on a work day. The food is wonderfully prepared and the staff is helpful. I hope to be able to visit for breakfast sometime soon. read more

Feeling bummed. Was hoping our brunch here would have been better than it was. We arrived and there were only a few open tables which was a good sign to me "it's busy so the food should be pretty good". We seated ourselves and our waitress was prompt and friendly. Our coffee was fairly quick to the table and our order was off to the kitchen. That's when I felt it went down hill. The coffee cups are small so it doesn't take long to empty them, so a routine check by the waitress would have been ideal. Not the case, we didn't see our waitress again until the food arrived 20 plus minutes later. The food was just ok, I ordered two eggs, hash browns, bacon and an English muffin. The eggs were exactly as order and good, the hash browns were not crispy and had very little flavor, the bacon was a maple bacon which I found I don't care for (no fault to the cook) and the English muffin was ok. Will I be back, I am really not sure as there are so many other restaurants I can try to find a good breakfast. read more

I want to love Moon's, I really do. But three visits in and I've yet to be impressed. Keep in mind, I've only been for breakfast. On my first visit, I was with a group of five or six for a late breakfast on a weekday. It wasn't busy at all, so we pushed some tables together in the middle of the floor. I had the pancakes and was disappointed. They were good at first, but after a few bites the richness hits you and made me feel a little ill. The batter has a great flavor, but they taste like they're cooked in a stick of butter. The texture is great, perfect actually, but even when dry, you bite in and get a heavy helping of butter (and not good or real butter, but that butter-flavored cooking substitute that restaurants use). The second time I brought my sister in, who was visiting from out of state, hoping for better results. It was unclear whether or not it was seat-yourselves, so we stood in the doorway like idiots while the wait staffed looked past us, for a solid five minutes. I got biscuits and gravy this round and sadly found the biscuits to have the same overly-buttery issue the pancakes had. And to top it off, the gravy was a little greasy, too. Again, not very satisfied. On my third visit, I ventured in alone, with a craving for restaurant-style hash browns. Again, I was confused if it was self-seating or not, but after a moment I grabbed a seat at the counter. I was promptly waited on (as I was each visit) and ordered the Hobo Beni. Again, it was greasy, plus the hash browns weren't all that great. I guess next time I'll just try the milkshake. read more

When strolling downtown during Saturday Market, it's not out of the ordinary to get a strong pang of hunger from smelling all the different vendor's creations on the streets... Somewhere I had not been since they moved locations and switched owners was Moons, so we sauntered in, not expecting live music and an absolutely jam packed breakfast joint! Let's be honest, it DOES have more seating than cramped ol' Goldy's down the street which was why we decided to forgo Goldy's and try something new. Plus Tay had never been to this Boise staple breakfast spot! Nostalgia hits you like a ton of bricks whe you walk through the door... you see a counter and old diner style bar seating like the old place and you just feel welcome. The integrity of the old place was kept but a new element is added that I can't put my finger on, but believe me, it's positive! Instead of waiting for a table we plopped down at the bar (closest to the door) because there was a guy playing his harmonica and guitar, croning away trying to make a couple bucks. For the life of me, I can't remember what his name was... but we clapped, tipped and enjoyed a LESS greasy (than I remember from years ago), very memorable breakfast at the new and improved Moons! I had the veggie omelet with potatoes and Tay had french toast. Wasn't too spendy and felt like I got my money's worth after a great meal, plus song and dance! We will return. Heard Moon's had a new owner, so decided to give them another shot. Service was very friendly, hence the bump up to 3 stars from 2. Food, however was unimpressive. Croissant breakfast sandwich was delivered smashed (like it was cooked with an iron) and missing 30% of it's ingredients. It was probably the worst breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Potatoes were greasy, a bit mushy and nothing to write home about. For the quality, the food was not a good value. I might give Moon's another shot and try their pancakes or something other than eggs. I've also heard they have good shakes. Though, with tons of great breakfast and lunch options within 1-10 blocks of Moon's I'll have a hard time finding motivation to do so. read more

I try to stop here for lunch every time I come to Boise. Without a doubt, Moon's is the home of the best Reuben sandwich I've eaten in my entire life. Although they have a wide assortment of burgers, sandwiches, and other traditional diner fare, I come for the Reuben. I'm counting the days until I can return to Boise for my next one. Hungry G. is a big fan of Reubens ... so much so that I've petitioned for membership into the "Tribe of Reuben" (I'll let you know how that turns out). Moon's Reuben sticks out because it is so unique. First of all, it is huge; it could easily feed a small family. The pastrami is thick and cooked to perfection, and the sauerkraut, Swiss, and dressing are proportioned perfectly. But that's not all--it also features a thick slice of turkey breast (yes, turkey!) on the bottom, which prevents the juiciness of the sandwich from dissolving the bread underneath. It comes on 3 (!) slices of delicious rye, which is robust and noticeable. Like their other entrees, this comes with a choice of sides: the smiley or crinkle fries are good, but so are the many other options. Moon's is also known for its incredible milkshakes. They are "hand spun" and come in many flavors. They are thick, rich, and delicious. I usually order a raspberry or marshmallow shake, but the dark chocolate is good too. For $0.50 you can mix these flavors, which is out of this world. Moon's has transformed from its roots as a classic old-school diner near the State Capital, where legislators made back room deals over a shake. A few years back it moved to a classier downtown location and facility. However, their food is just as good as it has always been ... and I suspect a few legislators still make deals here. NOTE: I've never had breakfast here, so that's my next goal. The homemade corned beef hash and eggs it supposed to be unbelievable. read more

When I mention to waitress, she said it was part of the grill, like it's a normal thing. I felt relieved when I was offered a helm of the tin foil variety when I entered this fine and unindoctrinated establishment. The waitresses were kind and clearly no lizard persons wearing the skin of their victims. This was affirmed via their diet, which did not in fact consist of flies, caterpillars, and other assorted insects. Whew *wipes forehead*. My omelette was paired quite nicely by some gentle bops that played throughout this gentle giant of a brunchery. 'Yello' by Coldplay was crows favorite (there was a standing ovation). The service was not the best. The waitress came over to take our order but we weren't ready yet so she said she'd come back...but never did. She admitted that she forgot about us and we were her only table. I had the fish and chips. Fries would have been really good if they weren't covered in salt which for some reason appeared to be glued onto everything. The fish was probably frozen but not bad for what it was. We also got an order of onion rings that were ok. They need to use some fresher ingredients and maybe some staff training. Everything seems like it's mediocre at best. Perhaps breakfast is better but for lunch I'll go Gernika or Bittercreek anyday. read more

Although the restaurant was very busy on Sunday morning, or waitress was prompt, kind, and meet all our needs quickly and with a smile. Most of our food was quite good, but I was very, very disappointed with the corned beef hash. As corned beef hash is one of my favorite foods, I was excited to try this dish at Moon's. However, what I ended up with was a plate of pan fried French fries with four or five small cubes of corned beef. For a dish titled "corned beef" hash I expected more corned beef. read more

This is the cutest little diner with great service and absolutely fabulous food! My husband and I stopped in here the morning of our drive out of Boise and I was so happy to have discovered their amazing "Moon babies". If you haven't had them before: do it. It's the amazing outcome of a one night stand between a pancake and a crepe and just damn delicious. Other items on the menu sounded tempting as well, my hubby got the salmon omelette which was nomtastic! The decor is charming with the 50's diner and the theme continues as all names for their specialty coffees and beverages are named after classic film stars like Lucille Ball or my husband's choice, The McClintok! The staff was very friendly and attentive and our only regret was that we just found this little breakfast spot the day we were on our way out of town. If you are looking for a breakfast joint while in Boise or just want a delicious milkshake, check this spot out! read more
