Great local place with a bountiful menu of delicious food! Friendly staff who always have a smile! A must try is the fried chicken dinner

The best and most welcoming brunch in Montclair. The service was also great. Highly recommend the shrimp and grits.

I love diners; can I just say that?! I was very pleased with my visit here today for lunch. They have all the diner classics and the owner was so sweet! He even offered complimentary dessert for our table but we were all so full we declined. read more

This was a nice little hole in the wall diner. I went here with 3 friends that were in town for my wedding. We were running around all day and were STARVING. The food was decent, but the service was awesome. The atmosphere is about what you would expect of a NJ diner, but for out of towners, they really liked it. If I ever find myself in the area again, I'd def stop in for a quick bite. read more

Awesome fresh omelette and delicious keto bread! Friendly staff. Can't wait to come back and try more!

Montclair Diner has always been a favorite of mine. I was so happy that they started offering delivery during the Covid 19 pandemic and have continued even though they now have outdoor dining. Can I tell you our food was just as good as dining in! Everything was hot, packaged nicely and arrived in record time! The paninis were hot and our milk shakes nice and cold! Thank you Montclair Diner! read more

I was coming out of the Montclair University and saw this diner. Personally I do like diners myself. The food was pretty but the environment... It was kind of dirty but overall it's pretty good. read more

I have been coming here for years. The owners Gus and Maria make you feel like family. The food is always good and good value. No matter what your mood, have a cup of soup: worth crossing town for. Bright and cheery without feeling impersonal. One sign of top management: most of their staff have been with them for a long time. I had the buffalo chicken salad today: carpeted with chicken and no problem swapping the usual iceberg for other lettuce. One if my favorite diners in the state of NJ read more

I heard about this diner after seeing them on The View for Whoopi's birthday special and then Tamron Hall. I figured I would give them a try after reading the reviews since I was visiting a good friend who lives in the NJ area. Today I visited with my friend and I had the Yummy French Toast and my friend had the Crab Cake Bene. We decided to share so that we can try multiple meals. I must say they both were ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. Being from Chicago, I know good food. The crab cakes were fresh and reminded me of Maryland Style crab cakes. Most diners typically use the frozen crab cakes but you can definitely tell these were fresh. And OMG the Yummy Toast was some of the best French Toast I ever had. I got the Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake and it was delicious. I highly recommend this place if you are in Jersey. It's a warm and friendly place like cheers. It's not a new diner but it definitely gives you that traditional diner hometown feel. read more

I've been going here for years so I may be a little biased. That being said, it's a favorite place for me to go despite it's flaws. The food is alright, I'd avoid the omelettes and go straight for the wraps or panini's. The service varies from being right on time to slow as molasses, it depends who you get and how busy the diner is. The waitresses are friendly, once again some bias since they know me well; the owners are very nice as well. The diner looks alright, nothing mind blowing but also nothing that makes you want to walk out. It's a good place to meet and eat, the food though is going to be up to your own personal tastes. I'd strongly suggest though that this place is worth a try. read more

Such a great service definitely will go back there I love the new management to time to uplift Montclair.Extremely attentive to their customers ! read more

My family and I love this diner! The atmosphere is so relaxed and welcoming. The two owners are incredibly warm and friendly. Plus the service is great and the food is delicious! It's the perfect place to become a regular, or to swing by whenever you're in the area! read more

As someone who works in the area, it is wonderful to know there's a place like this where you can get good, inexpensive, honest food. The service is great, the people are friendly, and I haven't gone wrong yet no matter what I have ordered. I am absolutely a regular here, and Gus, Maria, Elizabeth, and the entire staff always treat me like family. Don't miss this one. read more

Char-Broil is where you go for pancakes after church, breakfast after the kids are in school, lunch when you don't feel like bothering with fancy places, or just where you want to go for "comfort food." It's not open late, so the atmosphere is pretty much always family-oriented. If you can get the booth by the front plate glass window, you can watch Montclair go by and likely see someone you know every few minutes. Gus, the owner, and his crew are attentive without being up your butt and around the corner, the food is good, and the ambience is "Jersey diner." The fare is American with a strong Greek accent. You can get a cheeseburger (with Pepsi, of course, no Coke), or gyro, eggs over easy or baklava. I don't think any of the wait staff aren't related somehow to Gus and his family, but the result is solid service. What would I recommend? Hearty fare. The soups of the day are usually chicken noodle and something else, and the waitress will likely refill your soda if she knows you. Don't go here to cut calories-- you definitely want fries with that. read more

Good value for your dollar. Homemade soups that I enjoy. Clean, friendly service -- sometimes that's all you want. Great place to bring the kids. read more

Went a few times... Lots of choices on the menu, prices are reasonable, food was delicious, and portions were generous. Loved going there until I saw one of the cooks come out of the kitchen with his hand in the open zipper of his pants scratching himself. Will NEVER go back. read more

Called "The Diner" by my family and I since we moved to Montclair when I was 4 years old, I have grown up with this restaurant. I am now 23, and I still go in regularly for eats. I've watched waitresses and management staff go in and out of the place, I've seen redecorating and renovation, but this diner has never lost the warm and inviting atmosphere that makes it the ideal place for families with kids to have lunch, or even just to stop in for a coffee and a pastry or sandwich. Some of the waitresses there are veterans and have been there forever, or as long as I can remember. This is a great little place and has helped to keep Upper Montclair kicking. read more

My husband and I went here after a long morning walk. We were greeted at the door by the staff, we were seated immediately, the waitress was nice, hot coffee and the food came out very quickly, and the food was delicious. I had the French toast, bacon and eggs. Priced right. I think we found a new spot. read more

Mr. Gus (one of the owners) is a neighborhood icon, and food is terrific... still our favorite breakfast and lunch spot in Montclair!

I went there today and found a hair in my pancakes. It was easy to see that the people preparing the food were not wearing any head gear. When I received my second batch, they had clearly been cooked in bacon fat. As a vegetarian, I couldn't eat them. I've had some good food here, but they need to be much, much more careful about food preparation. read more

My mom and I went here for breakfast. We both enjoyed what we got, I got pancakes and she got an omelette! Both were great and I tried some of her home fries which I really liked. The owner was incredibly friendly and acted like we were regulars. Service was great. It's a really cute place!!! read more

Worst diner I've ever been to. The turkey burger was definitely not turkey meat...don't even want to know. The avocado was likely something out of a bag...honestly it didn't look or taste anything like avocado. Places like this just bum me out. I mean, I get it...you have a huge inventory and not the highest volume. So most of your offerings are frozen. Fine. But you can go for things above the bottom of the barrel from suppliers. And shrink your menu to a manageable size. This just comes down to laziness and no care for quality of food. Disappointing is an understatement...especially for such a cute town. And your history in the town should be something to live up to, not take for granted and use as an excuse. read more

Sloppy mediocre food. Had a salad here and it literally looked like it was prepared by a 5 year old. Not to mention our waitress was an attitudy eastern European lady who acted like a drill Sargeant when taking our order and rolled her eyes quite a few times at us. So many better diners in NJ. read more

We didn't like the food. It was all frozen and served half warmed up! It was not tasty at all so we wanted to change it to something else and given attitude because of it. read more

Stopped in for lunch. Good Value. Fast and Friendly Service. Relatively easy parking in the municipal lot. Entered needing lunch. Exited having had lunch. I'll stop in 2-3 times a year. No more. read more

Food is average but service and feel very good. The owners are gracious and welcoming. Many people are greeted by name. Decent food, reasonably priced, great service, nice town. What a NJ diner should be. read more

Montclair Diner is charging $2.25 for a glass of seltzer. When questioned the hostess said "oh that is considered a soda, we have to pay for the gas in the thingy, etc". Folks, that is ridiculous. Been going to this dive for too long, I guess. read more

Standard diner fare. got a cuban panini with fries. was overall pleased, probably due to the fact I came in to the situation was no expectations. Service was great. Portions were small. Decor was a lill all over the place. read more

I feel compelled to add my own "three-star" rating. First, this place wins my heart as being the least pretentious place to eat in Montclair with fair prices to boot. I really enjoy the char-broiled burger as it's a different taste than most other diners. The service is friendly, but the wait staff has a tendency to sit down and zone out when the place isn't that busy (which is pretty much always). Whenever I have somewhere to be, I know I can be in and out of there in 20 minutes when I sit at the counter, which is more than I can say for most other spots. Reminds me of "Skip's Diner" from The Simpsons. read more

Food was excellent! I had the grilled chicken gyro platter. Came with Greek salad and fries. I wasn't crazy about the salad dressing--tasted more like oil and vinegar and lemon juice rather than Greek dressing which I love, but everything still tasted fresh and good. read more

Had lunch today at the Montclair Diner on Valley Road in Upper Montclair. I ordered eggs benedict over crab cakes. Simply delicious and the service was superb. read more

Excellent diner with a great, welcoming ambiance. It is spotless and well maintained. The staff is helpful and attentive. In terms of food, the fish was fresh and delicious. We also enjoyed the pulled pork which hit the spot! The waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and offered me a keto bun option - amazing! The location is beautiful and parking was easy. My family and I went to the Montclair diner for breakfast and our experience was nothing short of wonderful. The staff was super friendly and the atmosphere made everyone feel right at home. They were very patient even with my very rowdy bunch of children and tended to their every need. The food was absolutely delicious, we had the pleasure of having the new yummy toast and we also tried the crabcakes benedict which was AMAZINGGGG. The entire family was pleased and we are definitely planning to take another trip back there soon. read more

I finally jumped on the yelp bandwagon to write a review. I had a wonderful experience at Montclair diner. It was like returning to where you grew up and eating at a family member's home. We were greeted at the door by the owner, Eliot, and shown to a table. People all around us looked happy and seemed to enjoy the food. The menu had a nice selection of items and the prices were great. I had the crab cakes Benedict which were amazing! My friend had something called yummy french toast which was decadent. I had more than a few bites. The wait staff were attentive and friendly. The decor was standard diner type but you could tell people come for the feel of the place and the great food. Overall, excellent! I will definitely be back for more! read more

I went here on a Sunday with my mother. The partners and staff were very friendly and welcoming. They menu items looked good but the specials are what caught my eye. My mom and I decided to try the specials. She had the Crab Cake Benedict that looked delicious. She let me taste a piece and it was very delicious. I had the Yummy French Toast Flight. I opted for that because of the description the pleasant waitress gave. It came out and I just had to take a picture. It looked so good with the berry sauce and whip cream. The waitress came back with special syrup. I tasted it without the syrup first and it was amazing. Then I tried it with the syrup and that was an added bonus. The partner who was a very nice guy and very personable came over to see how we were doing. We told him how much we loved the food and friendly welcoming atmosphere. Then the chef who's also a partner came to talk to us to see how we were doing. My mom and I were gushing over the food. I will definitely be back and I have told a lot of people to go Montclair Diner, they won't be disappointed. read more
