Montclair Diner has always been a favorite of mine. I was so happy that they started offering delivery during the Covid 19 pandemic and have continued even though they now have outdoor dining. I have been coming here for years. The owners Gus and Maria make you feel like family. The food is always good and good value. No matter what your mood, have a cup of soup: worth crossing town for. I heard about this diner after seeing them on The View for Whoopi's birthday special and then Tamron Hall. I figured I would give them a try after reading the reviews since I was visiting a good friend who lives in the NJ area. Today I visited with my friend and I had the Yummy French Toast and my friend had the Crab Cake Bene. We decided to share so that we can try multiple meals. I must say they both were ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. Being from Chicago, I know good food. The crab cakes were fresh and reminded me of Maryland Style crab cakes. Most diners typically use the frozen crab cakes but you can definitely tell these were fresh. And OMG the Yummy Toast was some of the best French Toast I ever had. I got the Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake and it was delicious. I highly recommend this place if you are in Jersey. It's a warm and friendly place like cheers. I've been going here for years so I may be a little biased. That being said, it's a favorite place for me to go despite it's flaws. The food is alright, I'd avoid the omelettes and go straight for the wraps or panini's. The service varies from being right on time to slow as molasses, it depends who you get and how busy the diner is. The waitresses are friendly, once again some bias since they know me well; the owners are very nice as well. The diner looks alright, nothing mind blowing but also nothing that makes you want to walk out. It's a good place to meet and eat, the food though is going to be up to your own personal tastes. My husband and I went here after a long morning walk. We were greeted at the door by the staff, we were seated immediately, the waitress was nice, hot coffee and the food came out very quickly, and the food was delicious. I went there today and found a hair in my pancakes. It was easy to see that the people preparing the food were not wearing any head gear. When I received my second batch, they had clearly been cooked in bacon fat. As a vegetarian, I couldn't eat them. Char-Broil is where you go for pancakes after church, breakfast after the kids are in school, lunch when you don't feel like bothering with fancy places, or just where you want to go for "comfort food." It's not open late, so the atmosphere is pretty much always family-oriented. If you can get the booth by the front plate glass window, you can watch Montclair go by and likely see someone you know every few minutes. Gus, the owner, and his crew are attentive without being up your butt and around the corner, the food is good, and the ambience is "Jersey diner." The fare is American with a strong Greek accent. You can get a cheeseburger (with Pepsi, of course, no Coke), or gyro, eggs over easy or baklava. I don't think any of the wait staff aren't related somehow to Gus and his family, but the result is solid service. What would I recommend? Hearty fare. The soups of the day are usually chicken noodle and something else, and the waitress will likely refill your soda if she knows you. Called "The Diner" by my family and I since we moved to Montclair when I was 4 years old, I have grown up with this restaurant. I am now 23, and I still go in regularly for eats. I've watched waitresses and management staff go in and out of the place, I've seen redecorating and renovation, but this diner has never lost the warm and inviting atmosphere that makes it the ideal place for families with kids to have lunch, or even just to stop in for a coffee and a pastry or sandwich. Some of the waitresses there are veterans and have been there forever, or as long as I can remember. This is a great little place and has helped to keep Upper Montclair kicking. read more

Sloppy mediocre food. Had a salad here and it literally looked like it was prepared by a 5 year old. Not to mention our waitress was an attitudy eastern European lady who acted like a drill Sargeant when taking our order and rolled her eyes quite a few times at us. My family and I went to the Montclair diner for breakfast and our experience was nothing short of wonderful. The staff was super friendly and the atmosphere made everyone feel right at home. They were very patient even with my very rowdy bunch of children and tended to their every need. I finally jumped on the yelp bandwagon to write a review. I had a wonderful experience at Montclair diner. It was like returning to where you grew up and eating at a family member's home. We were greeted at the door by the owner, Eliot, and shown to a table. People all around us looked happy and seemed to enjoy the food. The menu had a nice selection of items and the prices were great. I had the crab cakes Benedict which were amazing! My friend had something called yummy french toast which was decadent. I had more than a few bites. The wait staff were attentive and friendly. The decor was standard diner type but you could tell people come for the feel of the place and the great food. I went here on a Sunday with my mother. The partners and staff were very friendly and welcoming. They menu items looked good but the specials are what caught my eye. My mom and I decided to try the specials. She had the Crab Cake Benedict that looked delicious. She let me taste a piece and it was very delicious. I had the Yummy French Toast Flight. I opted for that because of the description the pleasant waitress gave. It came out and I just had to take a picture. It looked so good with the berry sauce and whip cream. The waitress came back with special syrup. I tasted it without the syrup first and it was amazing. Then I tried it with the syrup and that was an added bonus. The partner who was a very nice guy and very personable came over to see how we were doing. We told him how much we loved the food and friendly welcoming atmosphere. Then the chef who's also a partner came to talk to us to see how we were doing. My mom and I were gushing over the food. Worst diner I've ever been to. The turkey burger was definitely not turkey meat...don't even want to know. The avocado was likely something out of a bag...honestly it didn't look or taste anything like avocado. Places like this just bum me out. I mean, I get it...you have a huge inventory and not the highest volume. So most of your offerings are frozen. Fine. But you can go for things above the bottom of the barrel from suppliers. And shrink your menu to a manageable size. This just comes down to laziness and no care for quality of food. Disappointing is an understatement...especially for such a cute town. And your history in the town should be something to live up to, not take for granted and use as an excuse. read more

I feel compelled to add my own "three-star" rating. First, this place wins my heart as being the least pretentious place to eat in Montclair with fair prices to boot. I really enjoy the char-broiled burger as it's a different taste than most other diners. The service is friendly, but the wait staff has a tendency to sit down and zone out when the place isn't that busy (which is pretty much always). Whenever I have somewhere to be, I know I can be in and out of there in 20 minutes when I sit at the counter, which is more than I can say for most other spots.
