I can't believe I stumbled across this incredibly cute diner while I was in Livingston, New Jersey! I had no idea what I was in for. I simply saw the word diner and I know I love diners so I went there. The beautiful building should have given away the fact that it was not at your average diner. This is an Alice in Wonderland inspired restaurant. The decor is so cute. The menu is out of this world. I ordered swordfish with spinach and mashed potatoes. My meal came with a large salad and a dessert. The price was absolutely decent for everything I received and the high-quality of the food. I was so confused that I had to look up the word "diner" to see why they would be calling this place a diner instead of a restaurant. Still can't figure it out, but the only thing was I had to walk up to the front to pay like you do at a diner, so maybe that was it. The service was excellent. They had servers all over the place and it wasn't even that busy by the time I arrived, which was around 4:30 PM, just before the dinner rush. but my absolute favorite thing about this restaurant was the fact that I stared at the Manhattan skyline throughout my meal. Honestly, I could not have asked for anything better. I highly recommend this restaurant for an amazing meal in a beautiful setting!
I've been a loyal, repeat customer of Chit Chat Diner in West Orange for quite some time, which is why this experience was so disappointing. Today, I decided to switch it up from my usual Cobb salad and ordered something simple--a grilled cheese. When my server, Daniel, asked if I wanted fries on the side, I agreed without hesitation. It's fries... nothing complicated, right? At no point was pricing discussed, and I didn't think to ask because it's typically a basic add-on. Things started to go left when I realized I was never asked what type of bread I wanted. When I brought it up, Daniel told me they had already made it with white bread--without even checking. That response alone was frustrating. I had to insist that it be made correctly with rye, which it eventually was. However, it still came out wrong again--this time with American cheese instead of the cheddar I specifically requested. Now let's talk about the bill. The grilled cheese was $8.95, bacon was an additional $3, and then there was a $7 charge labeled "deluxe." That "deluxe" charge? A small bowl of fries--maybe 20 fries at best. I was honestly floored. A $7 upcharge for fries is excessive, especially when there was no clear communication that agreeing to fries meant upgrading the meal to a "deluxe" at that price point. I understand a "deluxe" upgrade when it comes with a full burger setup--lettuce, tomato, onions, fries--but this felt misleading and disproportionate for what was actually served. To make matters worse, the fries weren't even good enough to justify the cost. I brought this to management's attention, and nothing was done to resolve or meaningfully address the concern. That was the most disappointing part. As someone who has supported this diner and returned consistently, this experience has made me seriously reconsider coming back. Transparency, attention to detail, and basic service standards matter--especially for loyal customers.
Oh my goodness! This diner is amazing! It's by far the fanciest diner I have ever been to. Decorated with the theme of Alice in Wonderland, there is so much to look at. The building sits atop a hill that overlooks NYC in the distance. I came with 3 other women for breakfast on a busy Sunday morning. The restaurant is very large, so we were promptly seated. Our server, Jessica, was tops! I had the California Breakfast BLT which was large and delicious. It came with chips that were very good. I also ordered a bowl of fresh fruit for the table to share-very good. Two of the other ladies had omelettes that were good. The coffee was very good and our cups were never empty. I am looking to return on my next visit to NJ.
The decor and tables are nice and the food was very good. The only issue I had was with the syrup. When you order pancakes, you only get one small bottle. When I asked for an extra syrup or two they gave me small packets of Smuckers syrup which aren't the same as the original syrup offered. The Smuckers syrup also tastes different. Their reasoning is that they have to up charge you more for each additional small bottle of syrup they give you, like they originally provided. Thats understandable, but when you order a standard stack of pancakes, they are big and dry and need a little more syrup than the small bottle they provided. They should have at least offered enough syrup to cover the large pancakes they offer.
I just have to take a moment to show love to Chit Chat Diner From the moment you walk in, the vibe is unmatched--fun, colorful, and full of life. The service is always amazing, fast, and welcoming, which makes every visit feel special. I also want to personally thank Gus, the owner, for being so kind and generous to me. It truly doesn't go unnoticed, and it's rare to come across someone who treats people with that level of care and hospitality. And let's talk about that Orange Whip Z ... absolutely next level! If you know, you know. Everything on the menu is a hit, but that right there is a MUST try. If you're looking for great food, great service, and an all-around great experience--Chit Chat Diner is the place to be. I'll definitely be back!
Review for Breakfast. Chit Chat is a huge and impressive venue with high ceilings and a very colorful eclectic design. Super roomy and comfortable. It's really more of an up scale full service restaurant. The service is exceptional. Excellent teamwork. Our server took our order and visited the table several times during the meal making sure we had everything we needed. Plus, the second tier servers were continually filling our water glasses and coffee mugs. I ordered my usual. A Florentine omelette. Fresh spinach with creamy feta and a side of golden hash browns. Nicely prepared. My wife ordered the French toast deluxe. Egg drenched challah bread grilled to perfection with a side of scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon and Taylor ham. Plus, a bottle of warm Vermont maple syrup. Everything was delicious. The coffee was very good as well. Rich and mellow. I have dined at the Chit Chat several times previously for breakfast, lunch and dinner and have always been very satisfied. I will be back for sure. Try it. I think you'll like it.
Came here before our trip to Turtleback zoo. This was my wife and niece's first New Jersey diner experience. The niece got the waffles which any 5 yr old would enjoy. I split the Deep South with my brother and my wife had the Greek omelet. The waffles were great. The rest of the food were fine. The hash browns didn't seemed cooked enough and the deep fried steak was a little dry. Service was friendly and the ambiance had an old time diner feel to it. If you were swinging by and wanted a place to get some quick food, this would probably hit the spot.

I love a diner that also offers adult drink options--it's the best of both worlds. We came for lunch, and I ordered the BLT. It was well-presented, classic, and pretty tasty, served with a side house salad and their Greek vinaigrette, which I absolutely loved. I also started with the Fiber Provider smoothie, and I'm so glad I did--it was fresh, flavorful, and a great way to get my morning/afternoon fruit fix. My boyfriend went the breakfast route with waffles, eggs, sausage, and bacon--simple, hearty, and done well. His Uptown (an Arnold Palmer) was a standout, made with real lemonade and sweet tea for a refreshing touch. The service was pretty decent as well. Overall, a great casual spot for a mix of diner favorites, fresh drinks, and a charming atmosphere.
I've come here many times and they never disappoint The specials menu changes often and they come with a starter soup, I've gotten the Matzo Ball soup, split pea and this time I got the Clam Chowder. I absolutely loved the teriyaki Salmon salad last time and switched it up for the Ahi Tuna Sandwich this time. Portions are decent and after the soup you will be full. The ambiance of the place is definitely the best part. You get an Alice in Wonderland kind of vibe. It can get busy during lunch hours but if are able to get window seatings you'll get a view of the New York skyline (if the city pollution allows) The only negative is they're drinks are more on the pricier side that. First time here and I love the decor! The outside and it are pretty unique. To start, I ordered the Nutella cold brew which was a bit too sweet for my preference but it was tasty. To eat, I ordered the Greek omelet with a side of avocado and it was yummy! Not too heavy or light just the right amount of flavor and texture. Hash browns were partly crispy which I loved. I wasn't too fond for the multigrain bread but I'm a bread snob who makes their own sourdough so that may be why . We ended our visit with a slice of cherry pie with ice cream and loved how light and not too sweet it was! Service was great, attentive, friendly and pleasant. Would come again! read more

Came on Valentine's Day with the family and we had such fun! Left another establishment as made a Resy but no one said it was a pre-fixe meal and didn't want to pay $$$ with our two 15yos! So, we decided, DINER!! Very happy to head to Chit Chat. Great service and tasty meal! I ordered a spinach tomatoes Swiss omelette and a Prosecco. And we ordered the tater tot special - which was pulled pork and cheese. Yum. Kids ordered fried chicken sandwich and matzo ball soup (delicious!) and a Reuben! No room for dessert but the cake case looked amazing so took some pics to remember to sample next time we come! read more

Great ambiance and very spacious. Great for a work lunch, catching up with family, or for spending time with a loved one. The menu selection is thorough and you can't really go wrong with anything on it. I would recommend coming for a nice meal and great service. read more

This is a diner? Really nicely appointed diner this setting inside & out gives the impression of much more than a diner! The views alone makes it worth eating here! Pretty much the menu is diner but there are some very upgraded items that makes it so much better restaurant. I ordered the Chicken Amore Breaded Chicken Cutlet topped with house made bruschetta, mozzarella cheese and balsamic glaze. Served over angel hair pasta with fresh sautéed garlic and oil. My wife had Pappardelle Bolognese. They have bottled beers, wine & some adult mixed beverages as well as soft drinks. An extensive Breakfast menu. Our server Mike L. was attentive. This place is a must‑try. Parking can be a little tricky and the wait for a table might get long, but it's absolutely worth it. The menu is huge, with tons of options -- especially around lunchtime. Service was excellent; our server Javier was fantastic. The décor is colorful, clean, and gives a modern twist to classic American diners. I've had a good diner experience every time I go here. Service is always good and on top of everything. It's very well run especially for such a huge space. The decor is cute, and of course there are those views of the city. The food is always good too, from quesadillas to the Jack Daniels smothered pork chops. The chicken and waffles are some of the best I've ever had but a little pricey at $22. The chicken is juicy and flavorful and the waffle was so soft it was truly delicious. Service was good too, nothing special. The ambiance was very cute and enjoyable to look around at all of the decorations. However I just can't give this a 5 stars because I ordered an orange juice that ended up being $8!!!! "Freshly squeezed" yet tastes like Tropicana. We came here on a Sunday morning because we always pass by it but we have never gone in, and we were curious about the "Alice in Wonderland" themed diner. We asked for a table for two and we were seated very quickly, however not in the main area so we didn't really get to enjoy what I think most people come to this diner for, which is the looks of it. The area we were seated in was nice, pretty spacious, but nothing outstanding in particular. I got their fajita omelette and my boyfriend got their chicken and waffles. Unfortunately, I didn't really like my omelette, the chicken was OK and it wasn't as big as a diner size portion so I was a bit disappointed since it was nothing special. My boyfriend's chicken and waffles, though, on the other hand, were great and definitely worth the $22 we paid for them - the chicken was very crispy and tender, they did not lie when they said you get half a chicken, and the waffles were very sweet and tasty. We also got orange juice and we were shocked to see the bell and find out that it was eight dollars for a glass of orange juice ! I have never been anywhere here or abroad where I have been charged that much for a singular glass, so that was very shocking. Overall, if I were to come back here, it would be just for the chicken and waffles. I do unfortunately have to give them three stars simply because that omelette really wasn't good and the shocking price of that orange juice. read more
Last time I was here was about 3 years ago. It was after 1030 and we sat right away. Waiter was nice and friendly he took our drink orders and we ordered the pulled pork nachos. The pork had good flavor but felt the chips were a bit stale. We had a cup of the chicken noodle soup, Reuben sandwich with fries and mozzarella sticks. The soup was good, the sandwich was good a big portion and the fries were just right. We took a piece of plain cheesecake to go. Sadly that was ok. Lacked the graham crust that I like, again it was ok we didn't even finish it. The drink menu looked good but didn't try their drinks. The decor not sure reminds me of Alice and Wonder land! Solid diner - we liked it. Little pricey but cute ambience and decor. We liked our server as well! There wasn't much of a wait on a Saturday morning around 11:45am but the parking lot was packed. We ordered the breakfast quesadilla and pancake deluxe. The quesadilla was so good! It also came with a Mimosa, Bellini, Bloody Mary which was nice. Everything came out quickly and was hot. The pancakes were huge and a little too dense, I don't think I'd get them again but I can be picky. Overall nice spot - good for groups / children etc. read more

TLDR: Chit Chat Diner is a must-visit for anyone in NJ! Food is always a 10/10! Stunning views overlooking NJ and the NYC skyline. Reasonably priced and friendly staff. Chit Chat Diner is always busy so I would advise you to come early! The diner is Alice in Wonderland themed as well so perfect family-friendly diner for kids and children :) Tip: Get the chicken and waffles and thank me later - it comes with the cutest miniature bottle of authentic syrup that comes out warm! read more

A nice Deco with Alice in wonderland mediocre diner. it is loud and lots of traffic. Great to take a picture for Instagram. We order multigrain waffles with fruit with a scoop of chocolate ice cream, egg, white omelette, with mushroom, tomato and feta cheese, lamb gyro and coffees. This is my go to diner when I'm in a mood for a good affordable New York strip steak. Not only is the steak good at this establishment but everything on the menu is delicious. And their desserts are to die for! Sometimes the service can be hit or miss, but what do you expect from a diner that's always busy! This diner is always clean and fold our families and individuals enjoying themselves and the food. I definitely recommend this place during off peak hours. But I promise you'll definitely enjoy this fine New Jersey diner! read more
Classic Jersey diner! Came on a Saturday morning and there was a long line to sit, they don't take any reservations. However took about 30-45 min for our party of 6 to sit which wasn't too bad! They had an assortment of food and we got chicken and waffles, pesto wrap, and egg sandwich with hash browns. All was good. Food comes quickly and there's parking in the adjacent lot where the old bowling alley was if the lot is full. Would come by again if I was in the area for a classic NJ diner! read more

We stopped for dinner at this diner while in the area with a party of five. The service was fine. Others ordered Jamaican jerk wrap, salmon pasta, and pastrami sandwich. This week I went to the Chit Chat Diner. The atmosphere of the diner was unique and whimsical. The menu had a lot of variety, and the plating was gorgeous. The food was also delicious and flavorful. The service at Chit Chat was exceptional, very fast, and attentive. This was an amazing dining experience and had both great breakfast and diner options. When I went, I got mozzarella sticks and a sandwich. Both were filling and delicious. The food was reasonably priced, but the drinks were a little pricey for the serving size. Chit Chat also had lots of options for dessert, making it a perfect date spot. When you first enter the diner, the case filled with fun decorated desserts stops you from getting seated immediately. Unfortunately, the food was so filling I had to get my dessert to go. I will definitely go back to get some dessert there rather than to go next time. read more

Saw a post on instagram about this dinner! Checked the menu on Yelp! Impressive and colorful decor!! Really enjoyed the dark chocolate mocha coffee! Eggs Benedict were delicious! The hollandaise sauce was very tasty and creamy! Highly recommend. Thank you Gena for a great service!!! Will have to come back for the cocktails! Parking on site. Do not accept reservations. The name really marks how fun this place is. The large menu is only overshadowed by this diner's setting. It feels like you are definitely stepping into Alice in Wonderland with the large chairs by the front door, checkerboard decorations and a royal rug when you walk in. This sets the mood when you are seated by the nice friendly staff at your table. Selecting from the large wide array of pasta dishes entrees or poached egg options make it really hard to not have FOMO, so hopefully you are with pals that share. The Big Fat Chocolate cake is very close to a death by chocolate slice that I haven't seen in years and shouldn't be missed if you are in. The new outdoor enclosed seating is bright and a little quieter than the main floor which is nice, but doubles as an option for those looking to hold parties or celebrations which can be hard to find in the area. read more
The pesto chicken wrap was a winning choice. I feel like this place never runs out of tables but they do run out of parking on site. We came for lunch at 1 pm on a weekday and had to park at the auxiliary lot at the bowling alley. The staff was welcoming and the place wasn't too loud. I ordered the pappardelle bolognese tonight and it was horrible. A can of Chef Boyardee would've tasted better. My husband who is not a picky eater tried it and he also agreed that it's the worst pasta we've ever had let alone the tasteless and bland bolognese. When the waiter asked if I wanted a box, I told him no I didn't want to eat it because it tasted horrible and he simply took it away and charged me $20.95. This should've been removed from my bill because it was inedible. We ordered several meals tonight so it's not as though we weren't spending money on dinner. Needless to say, I will not be coming back. read more
