My friends and I had a really nice lunch experience here yesterday. It's unexpected to see a diner on bougie Church Street. We were warmly greeted as soon as we arrived. The diner decor is very appealing with lots of cozy booths. We had a wonderful server who was very friendly. I ordered the Chickpea Salad. I could eat this every day. The portion was very generous. Loads of chickpeas, carrots, cucumber, red onion, red pepper, and artichoke hearts all topped with a lemon thyme vinaigrette. So refreshing and delicious. I will crave this salad. My friends had a Cheesesteak Panini with Fries, and Eggs with Corned Beef Hash. They both really enjoyed their dishes. And again, the portions were ample. This is a really solid, affordable, and pleasant spot in Montclair. I will return. read more

Hidden off the main pedestrian path that most people in montclair frquent is a little block with this hidden gem. Montclair house grill is essentially an elevated diner. incredibly modest pricing, big portions, and great service. I wish i could remember my servers name, a very friendly and funny older latin gentleman, but he kept the laughs flowing and made sure to check in on us often. i grabbed the tuna melt sando special. i really wanted to love this, but it had no flavor. it was incredibly bland. it needs seasoning. however, the plus side to this was the size. im not gonna lie, your girl got another dinner and lunch out of this sandwich (yes, the tuna was PACKED on this!). the cheese was your basic melted cheddar slice, which isnt nothing to brag about. It comes with a soup and i chose the matzo ball soup. this hit the damn spot. 1 big ball, a few veggies, and a very lightly salted chicken broth. simple, but to the point. i tried my friends wings. unfortunately she doesnt live for the spice life like i do, so she grabbed them bland, but i will say this, her wings were good. they were perfectly fried and had a great crust. yes, i did in fact pour tapatio on top of them. her onion rings were also fried well. i am not sure if theyre home made, but if they arent, whoever operates that fryer back there, knows their timing. you can bite into every onion ring and get an even crunch, and the skin doesnt fall off the onion. Let me tell you, i despise biting into an onion ring and i just get soggy onion but no shell. not here, montclair house grill keeps it in tact. would come back in a heart beat for the service and the simple, but classic dishes. read more

Stopped on here on a Sunday morning while in the area. Beware the parking here is atrocious. Drove around for 25 minutes before finding a spot that was would probably have gotten me a ticket if I got caught. Montclair has horrible parking. The place itself was very nice. Standard breakfast spot with booths and tables. Very clean. Service was great. Food came out as if they read our minds. The food itself was very good. Good eggs and the omelette was very nice. Nice spot for brunch. We sat outside on a gorgeous day. The manager seems like a great guy. He was solicitous and I even saw him fixing tables & making sure guests were comfortable. Our waiter was grumpy. Not sure if she was having a bad day but her attitude was the antithesis of the manager. He had to tell her to come over to us. She seemed annoyed that my friend had a question about what she was ordering, and didn't check on us until it was time for the check. It wasn't a busy morning, the inside restaurant was empty, and there were other wait staff working with the other tables. Anyway, my friend ordered the avocado toast with eggs and I ordered eggs benedict. Both were very good and we enjoyed them. We had a great time talking, and looking at the dogs seated at the next table, and it was just a nice morning all around. We each had a coffee. This place is special. It's a diner but it's not. I've ordered from here many times before and they have not disappointed. We ordered the Mixed Grill, Lamb Chops, and a burger for my son. I asked them not to cook the protein hard. I know complain about things being week-done. I am not that person. We also asked for the lamb to be medium rare, according to my wife it was. Nice. As far as the burger, it was what you would expect, no complaints from my son. I love the options they provide. In such a small space they get it done. Oh and the wings were great. read more

This cute diner style restaurant was conveniently located on the main road on Church Street. After checking out other locations and reviewing their menu, we decided to try brunch here. I have had breakfast here frequently over the past couple of weeks and the food has not disappointed. The portions I think is plenty especially now more than ever. When I am here I sit for a couple hours as I work and the staff have more than accommodating. This is definitely that neighborhood diner as it is obvious who visit this spot regularly. My sister and I decided last minute to go out for lunch but couldn't decide what we wanted. We Googled a few places and chose Montclair House Grill because of their extensive menu. We sat on the patio which was lovely. Perfect for people watching. The staff does a fantastic job of umbrella management to make sure patrons are well shaded. Like I said, their menu is huge. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with so many choices from appetizers, salads, handhelds, entrées; American fare, Mexican, Greek, Vegan. They were very accommodating when I asked for the Bacon Cheddar Grilled Chicken Wrap with a burger instead of chicken. Really delicious with the burger! My sis had the Turkey Bacon Club. Real roasted turkey breast, crisp bacon and avocado. It was one of the best club sandwiches she's ever had. Our meals came with soup and we both had the matzah ball which was perfect. We also shared an order of sweet potato fries. Service was fantastic. We were checked up on often and our server was very sweet. We will definitely be back soon. read more

After walking all around downtown Montclair, my friend and I ended up here just because it looked great from the outside with a nice friendly ambiance. So we ate inside but there was plenty of covered outdoor seating that was available on a warm, sunny, Saturday afternoon. I had the huevos rancheros skillet and my friend had the chicken wrap. For less than $14, I got quite a meal! The eggs were fresh, the meat was tender, and overall it was just very delicious. Very much got my money's worth! My friend also very much enjoyed his chicken wrap. Would love to come back and try some more of the multiple things that are on their menu. Service was also good. This is one of the things that keeps me coming back to New Jersey. The restaurants have such good variety and I so much enjoy trying them out. Hope to come back soon! read more

My husband and I live in Richmond Virginia but are New Jersey natives and one of our eateries was the Montclair House Grill. I used to meet a lovely group of friends from the Montclair YMCA there once a month for breakfast. I sampled a different meal every month. Pancakes, French toast, eggs, omelets. Each was served hot and delicious. My Steve enjoyed burgers, tacos and potato skins while I tried soup, salad, and cold sandwiches my favorite being the California Club. The crab cake sandwich is a tasty hot meal. And we both loved the desserts. I enjoyed the cheese cake and my and I both thought of the ice cream and red velvet cake as personal favorites. The service is amazing everyone is so warm and welcoming. Sophia, and her parents Chris and Thelma are sweet friendly people. Some of our favorite staff Tracy Alex, Sam, Vinny, Jordan, Kaitlyn, Olivia and America. Felix and Victor are great too. This place doesn't even deserve 1 star, it's truly a 0-star restaurant. I went for dinner today and CHEWED A PIECE OF GLASS FROM MY SOUP. I spit it out and then found MORE PIECES OF GLASS in my soup. I called the manager over, and he didn't even seem sincerely apologetic. He just asked if I was okay and then said "it's not something we can control", like excuse me?? And then he went away WITHOUT offering another soup or anything at all; I had to call the waitress to ask to not pay. I ended up not paying for the meal (which, frankly, was the least they could do, given that I CHEWED AND ALMOST SWALLOWED GLASS). The food wasn't good either. The owner or his family members are there often and they make sure things run very smoothly in terms of food and service. Very reasonably priced and tasty food and a wide choice of foods. Raymond's is down the street and it's certainly good. For me though, Raymond's is a scene to be seen and not something I want to endure. read more

The service was awesome everyone was so friendly and happy to be there. The staff was great!! We had both my 8yo and 1yo with us and we decided to sit outside and enjoy our meal. Vanilla milkshake which was a great! Before we left the staff serenaded us with a mini happy birthday for the little one since he turned one and we enjoyed coffee cake a little extra ice cream! Came here for brunch and to take advantage of the large outdoor seating area. Clearly competing with nearby Raymond's and seem to be similar. The Grill is more or less a diner as most of what is on the menu you'd find there with perhaps a few unique selections. This is particularly for the skillets and sandwiches, but there may be more. I had the BBQ Pork Omelette. It comes with toast and sour cream. Very good, very filling. Probably could be shared or saved if you aren't real hungry. I picked it as it was one the the more unique things on the menu, and I've not seen that at any diner or similar place. The don't skimp on the pork and I like that. The day we came it was quite busy so there was a bit of a wait. The wait continued when there was a mix up with the order and the food took even longer to come out. The staff were very apologetic and as result we got reduced bill and free dessert which was very nice. Restaurants that screw up can learn from that. Decent diner-esque fare here. I'd definitely recommend over Raymonds. read more

I was somewhat let down by the food here. They recently reopened for outdoor dining and all of the staff were wearing masks and gloves. The owner/manager was there and doing a great job managing things. The menu has lots of great options to choose from. It is essentially like a diner though. They seem to focus on quantity over quality. I was excited to try the California breakfast skillet. It comes with potatoes, bacon, cheese and eggs with avocado on top. Firstly the flavor was rather lacking. Perhaps some hot sauce would help so I asked for some and it was a little better. Secondly there was only 3 little slices of avocado on top so it felt a bit lacking. The dish was very large and I couldn't not finish it all. I did like the crispness of the potatoes though. I tasted some of the pulled pork bbq omelet and it seemed very flavorful so can recommend that dish. Another thing that happened was our order got lost in the kitchen somehow. We waited for a long time and realized that people who came in after us were already getting their food and we hadn't yet! So we had to reorder and it came out very quickly after that. We really appreciated the discount they gave due to the mistake as well as a dessert on the House! Very good customer service. **ALLERGY FOLKS PLEASE BE CAREFUL** Swung by for a quick lunch outside Avocado Quinoa Bowl (2/5) portion and dressing was good but everything was bland. Not a lick of seasoning so essentially a big bowl of cold veggies and cold dry chicken Penne Primavera (4/5) great flavor and perfectly el dente pasta. Lots of vegetables and chicken was cooked perfectly as well. The main issue I had was after noting my daughter had a dairy allergy they brought out the pasta with what I could see were bits of stretchy cheese through the dish. Waitress was great said she told them and had them make another one. For some reason the manager or supervisor of the day comes out says the kitchen said they did not put cheese in it and proceeds to inspect the dish. I then show her several pieces of cheese and she takes it into her finger and is inspecting it. And is still not convinced, to which I just respond that the waitress kindly requested a new dish and will be bringing it out as requested. My other child already started eating at this point since they were sharing and she proceeds to ask if she can take the plate away since it has cheese. To which I said no my other child is not going to have to also wait for a new dish because of your mistake and she's already eating. Reflections: 1) My child has a severed dairy allergy. It's not a joke and so to make it seem like my family is making false assumptions related to their error is insulting. On top of that I didn't make a big deal I simply flagged it quickly. Mind you had I not inspected it closely we would be in a totally different more serious health situation right now. 2) At what point would that kind of behavior be okay? The waitress already took care of it and the audacity for this woman to come out then use her fingers to insect the food?! I will as always review a food establishment based primarily on the food, but I needed to note this highly important part of our experience. Walking down Church Street one afternoon and I stopped to check out the menu in the window. Only 2 pages but sounded interesting enough. Besides, the place was packed, and in Montclair that's saying something. The place is a kicked up diner and I mean that in a good way. The actual menu is 8-10 pages and loaded with all the standards and then some.It took a while to settle on Buffalo wings( super crispy) and the Grilled Chicken Paillard( awesome choice) My daughter had the Penne Vodka with Chicken and it could've easily fed 2 hungry people.Service was friendly and attentive It's a BYO and Montclair Wine Shop is basically across the street ( hint:10% discount for checking in on Yelp!) Lemon potatoes contained potatoes that were rotten (see photo), the mixed veggies were mostly undercooked and some were raw with excessive seasoning, the coleslaw is terrible/tasteless, the Philly Cheesesteak had hardly any peppers & onions or cheese. I had a great dinner Saturday night at Montclair house. My friend and I ate outside. We had hummus, stuffed grape leaves, chicken kabob and the dish in the picture, cod fish on brown rice with olives and feta cheese. The hummus was creamy and delicious, just perfect, as was the stuffed grape leaves, and I couldn't believe how good my meal, the codfish, was... I was also happy when the check came.
