Was in Montclair and it was time for a late lunch so I decided to finally stop in to The Corner. Whenever I've driven by in the morning there's always a line outside as they're supposed to have great coffee and breakfast, however, it was almost 2pm so there was no line and it was time for lunch ... but I still had this awkward wait time just sort of standing there waiting for someone to greet and seat me. Once I was seated I was given a carafe of water with a filled glass (& the gentleman continued to ensure my glass was never empty which was a nice touch). The menu itself is pretty breakfast heavy but they have daily specials which seem to capture mostly non-breakfast items and I decided to try the Roadside Burger & Fries ... but I literally sat there waiting once again to be acknowledged by a server and place my order (& it was a good 5 minutes). Once my order was placed the meal arrived pretty swiftly. The burger was decent but nothing to write home about and the fries were literally potato sticks because they were so thinly sliced ... if they had been advertised as such I would've opted for a different side if possible. I was in town for work and saw this as a prime spot to grab brekky. I was most impressed by the pancakes which are, in fact, as thick as they appear but also maintain the crisp edges that I absolutely love. I asked for extra crispy bacon and they delivered. I also had a chai latte although my colleague ordered the seasonal cider and I kind of wished I had tried that. This spot is cozy and even has a number of fresh juices you can order. And the display was full of pastries that looked yummy but I just had to resist. My sole qualm with this place was that I was told I would have to wait to be seated until my full party of two arrived. I had been standing and was wearing my work bag. I get it, but lord let me sit down. Not much will change between a party of 1 vs 2 and also the other options (bar seating) wouldn't have been very comfortable for me anyway. I ordered an almond latte and it was delicious considering I'm not much of a coffee drinker in general. My partner ordered an iced chai latte-- very milk based and didn't have much spice or flavor. I tried ordering the pulled pork Benedict--but beware it is only a weekend item. I went for also getting their salmon toast with tomatoes and avocado, along with 2 poached eggs. When I look up hugely popular, busy restaurants that do not take reservations like The Corner on Yelp, the thing of utmost importance to me is my expected wait time. So: The wait for 5 people on a cloudy, brisk fall Sunday at noon - 1 hour. The wait for 2 people on a freezing winter Tuesday at 11:45 AM - No wait for the counter, 5-10 minutes for a table. By the time we left around 12:45 PM, there were free tables. The menu is overall very simple, but the preparations are very well done. I ordered the brisket taco which I felt was the wrong thing to order. It tasted good but very standard. Seriously, I should have gotten the salmon toast, the breakfast sandwich, or those huge fluffy pancakes. My wife ordered the Corner burger with shoestring fries - that was juicy and delicious. I added on a Kouign-amann pastry to our order at the end which was delicious and just the right level of sweetness, and partially made up for it. We will probably be back on another cold Tuesday at 12:30 so I can order those pancakes. read more

I always thought the food would be to die far but it left much to be desired sadly. My tomato bisque was delicious but my grilled cheese was too oily, causing a strange taste. The homemade chips were amazing but the bbq sandwich itself was missing something? Maybe like a slaw to be added in to balance it out. Every dish had potential but was missing an extra something. Unfortunately, our recent visit was met with one of the most unprofessional experiences I've had at a restaurant. The host, who I can only assume is the owner based on how he carries himself... made it clear that our business didn't matter. My wife went in first while I parked. He told her he couldn't seat us until the full party arrived, which is completely understandable. I got there within 30-35 seconds of her calling me, but before I could walk in, he chose to seat another party who also wasn't fully present and appeared to be regulars. Naturally, I asked why the policy applied to us and not them. Instead of simply explaining, he brushed me off with a dismissive gesture and zero acknowledgment. When I calmly asked again for clarification, he told us he "didn't have time" to deal with us ... and kicked us out. I've never been removed from a restaurant for respectfully asking a question. It wasn't about being entitled; it was about fairness and consistency. The way we were treated was unnecessary, disrespectful, and absolutely not aligned with basic hospitality. It's a real shame that a place known for great food is overshadowed by such poor leadership at the door. I hope management becomes aware of how damaging this behavior is, because customers deserve better. read more
