Was meeting a friend for brunch on a Saturday so thought let's check out this cute little spot right in the heart of Montclair. I found parking right by the train station and just walked a block over. It was a little after noon time and surprisingly they had a couple of two seat tables open so we were able to be seated right away. The vibe is super chill and I love that there is a shelf of book running along the back that kids or adults can borrow while at the restaurant. Service was impeccable from the minute we sat down. The staff was very attentive. Food didn't take long to come out at all. The omelette was cooked well and the salmon BLT was flavorful and hearty. The salad that accompanied it definitely needed some acid in the dressing. Had a lot of potential but tasted like nothing. My only complaint was the bathroom seemed a little dirty. To be very clear-there are a lot of great things about Red Eye Cafe. To start, it's located in a super cute and decorative street in Montclair, NJ. The ambiance in the cafe is cozy and welcoming, and the staff is incredibly nice. The food is also a real hit. For drinks, I ordered a vanilla chai ($4) which was amazing and perfectly spiced and sweet. For food, we ordered the pumpkin pancakes ($10) and the avocado toast ($14-16) both were great. The pancakes were fluffy and flavorful with a nice cinnamon butter. The avocado toast was fresh and it's a big portion. This is a very solid breakfast and lunch spot in Montclair. The decor is very nice and the workers are very friendly and helpful. They also play good music, in my Gen X opinion. I have been here several times and I have tried a few dishes. The Scotch Egg Bahn Mi is a very unique and delicious twist on a breakfast sandwich. The Shrimp and Coconut Grits was a hearty and tasty lunch. The coffee/ juice specials are really fun and I highly recommend. Been here before but not in a long time. From the beginning the staff were friendly and attentive. It's a small place and it was busy so that says something about the quality of food. Worth the wait for the delicious brunch at this cute cafe. Great local spot, highly recommended from friends, and a great little coffee bar to boot. The fresh pressed juice was actually really quite good. I loved the hash! Lots of delicious chunks of corned beef, tasty seasoned potatoes, fresh eggs and that scrumptious red eye gravy. I used to go often, 5-10 years ago when it felt a bit more like a hip, happy, cafe. It has since gone downhill...the staff is lazy and unfriendly, the food is not prepared with care, and I ended up with food poisoning. From when we walked in, the bar staff just stared at us and let us fend for ourselves. No "good morning" "someone will be right with you", nothing. Our waiter took their time taking any orders at all, even for drinks. We asked for a scone for our toddler to come out asap before the rest of our order, and didn't see it getting run to the kitchen until our food was out. In the meantime, our waiter was just hanging out sipping coffee. The sweet scramble sandwich that made me sick wasn't good on the way down either. It was extremely sloppy, with what felt like an 8-egg omelette folded onto it that slipped out as soon as I tried to bite it. The onions were just onions (not a jam), and the muffin was soggy and not toasted. The potatoes were lukewarm and soggy, nothing special. My husband's meal was equally clunky. The best part was the scone, which I'm not sure they make in house anyway but if they do, kudos. I was extraordinarily sick from the bizarre sandwich. I can't say I will continue to return. They were sliced already and wrapped in plastic wrap so we bought a coffee cake, oatmeal raspberry bar and matcha crinkle cookie to go. The baked goods looked nice but the only one that was not very disappointing was the matcha crinkle cookie. It was tender and soft in the middle and tasted quite nice. Very distinct but not overwhelming matcha flavor. The oatmeal bar and coffee cake were terribly stale. The oatmeal bar in particular was actually so hard we could barely cut it with a knife. And it was bland. Almost no raspberry in it so you didn't really taste that. And the rest of it tasted like an insipid teething cookie. Just meh. The coffee cake tasted somewhat better in that you could detect cinnamon but aside from that it was also so hard it was more like bread than a cake. Not sure we would come again. This was my second time coming here and it was just as great as the first time. The first time I had the Avo burger with an egg which I remember being delicious and yesterday I had the breakfast burger and vanilla chai tea. The burgers were both very well seasoned and filling. Highly recommend their burgers! The chai tea was one of the best I've ever had and I've had my share of chai's! I believe the side of chips that the burgers come with are made in house, they have a unique flavor that I cannot describe but are soooo delicious and very crunchy. Really surprised it took me this long to try this restaurant. Food was really good and service was excellent! I came here to catch up with a friend and felt like the server was attentive and he did not rush us at all!! Restaurant is super clean with a bookstore/coffee house aesthetic. My girlfriend wanted to stop for some coffee, and once we stepped in we decided to get a few items to go and sample with the kids at home later. I'm sorry we did that because other than the matcha crinkle cookie, they were not very good. The matcha crinkle cookie was soft inside with a nice crunchy outside. I'm not usually a fan of matcha, but I actually liked this a lot. I always find that matcha things taste too much like grass or hay for me. But not this. It definitely had a matcha flavor but it was very pleasant and I could taste a milky flavor in it. I enjoyed it. I wish we could say the same about the oatmeal raspberry bar and the coffee cake. Remember, I said we took them home to split and tried with everybody. The raspberry oatmeal bar was so stale and hard. We could barely cut it with a steak knife. When we finally got it cut, it crumbled apart because it was so hard. We might've been able to overlook the fact that it was hard and treat it like a cookie if it had a good taste. But it didn't have that either. It had almost no raspberry inside and as a result, you couldn't really taste any raspberry. And the cake/cookie part was very boring. It didn't have any depth of flavor and tasted like a mediocre store-bought cookie. Coffee cake too was very hard, although to be fair, it did taste like a coffee cake. Enjoyed breakfast here with my husband. Came in right at opening on a Saturday. We were seated right away but I was pretty surprised at how quickly it became busy. A great local cafe!! I've been to the Red Eye Cafe a few times and it always continues to deliver great food! I went yesterday for an early lunch on a Friday and it was quite busy with a 10-15 minute wait for a table by the time I left. Many came for quick grab and go coffee along with some tables outside on a nice day. It's pretty small inside with only about 10 tables but it's a great cozy atmosphere. I got my favorite sandwich there, the turkey pear sandwich which comes with a small side salad. Despite being busy the service was timely and attentive! The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Montclair is surely full of a bunch of great restaurants but I'll definitely keep going back to Red Eye Cafe! read more

Visited Red Eye Cafe for breakfast on a Saturday. They're mostly doing takeout for the pandemic, but their outdoor dining area is open. It's an adorable little alley with strung Edison bulbs, brick walls, and chalk art. The waiter came, took our orders, and soon returned with a takeout bag. Everything is disposable, I guess to assist with health and safety during the pandemic. I got their cardamom cold brew coffee, which had a nice floral flavor without being sweet. The food was good. I got the french toast with strawberries and maple syrup. It wasn't overly sweet or soggy which is good. The atmosphere was nice and the prices were very cheap. Definitely worth returning. read more

I've been here a few times now. Updating my review from 4 stars to 5 because they definitely deserve it! COFFEE: Get the Dirty Chai Latte, you will not regret it. Delicious! And not too sweet. They have oat, soy, and almond milk options for you lactose intolerant/anti-diary people (like me) as well. FOOD: Great! Hard to go wrong here, but honestly the Shiitake Mushroom Salad here is probably my favorite thing I've had. It has thinly sliced pieces of Parmesan cheese that go really nicely with the kale and mushrooms. Dressing is light but perfect. I've had a few other things here, like the queso fresco sandwich (was not a big fan). Everything else I've had here has been pretty good. Many healthy options too, and very reasonably priced!! SERVICE: Great! People working here are super nice, I've never had an issue. AMBIANCE: This place is super cute. They have art hanging for sale, books around, etc. Decently sized space, but wouldn't recommend a group larger than 4-5. Came here for a brunch on a Sunday. The wait was approximately 15 minutes or so at noon, which wasn't too bad. The place looked like a simple cafe from the outside, but the food here were anything but simple. We ordered the Double Happiness Waffle and The Highlander. First of all, the Double Happiness Waffle was exactly what I needed on a rainy Sunday, the waffles themselves were perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The salted caramel ice cream complemented the waffles well, with the hint of saltiness and sweetness, it eliminated the need for syrup. Lastly, the candied bacons provided a decadent finishing touch for this dish. Overall, I loved the different flavor and texture profile for this dish. It is definitely not for the faint of heart, but it is the perfect dish when you are looking for a bit of indulgence for the weekend. The Highlander was an interesting dish. It was a bahn-mi sandwich with scotch eggs, definitely not a combination I've seen before. It is a good sandwich with a burst of sourness from the pickled vegetables, spiciness from the sriracha and savoriness from the scotch eggs. I really liked the uniqueness of this dish. Service was prompt and attentive. Overall, Red Eye Cafe is a good place to go for a delicious brunch. read more

Been ordering from Red Eye a lot with DoorDash over the last few years and I've been in the restaurant a few times going back a decade now and the quality and consistency has been maintained throughout the years. Coffee options are excellent and all menu items are tasty and presented well. One time the store even called me up just to confirm how I wanted my cappuccino. Prices are more than fair also for the quality that they are giving you. The reason why I use DoorDash so often is that the food and also the coffee always arrive still hot. The place is a little small but quite cozy. Most of the diners today (1/27/18) were for parties of two and i noticed that more than that the wait is a little longer. (Guess that goes for all restaurants though lol) Anyway, once you're there you are instantly greeted by the variety of goodies by the entrance which vary from cookies to scones, brownies, croissants etc dont get too tempted lol There will be a line but ask what it is for coz it's either the waiting line to be seated or the line for take-out orders. They have a lot of customers who come in and out just for coffee and that's it. As for the food, the corned beef hash and the highlander we ordered were pretty good and satisfying. The portions are enough and the wait time is tolerable. The "meat ball" in the highlander has a good crunch and has that "asian" flavor (my apologizes for lack of better description) which i like. Im happy it comes with arugula salad on the side. The corned beef hash was tasty and i like that it's cut into cubes the same way as the potatoes. Looked very harmonious with each other. I love coming here for breakfast or lunch! It's my third visit and still I'm impressed. Normally I order a sandwich usually served with a spring mix salad on the side, but today I opted for straight up breakfast. I went with the green eggs and ham and my father ordered an omelette with ham and goat cheese. Both were served with a multigrain toast (from Balthazar Bakery btw), potato hash and a strawberry preserve. Mine was excellent, but was even tastier mixed with a bite of my father's dish. I might have to ask them if they can substitute the gruyere in mine for goat cheese next time! The potato hash is well seasoned red potatoes mixed with a bit of sweet red pepper and onion. I normally don't eat the potatoes anywhere at breakfast, but today I kept chomping down on these! They aren't crispy as my father would prefer, but he agreed they were definitely tasty. My father's omelette was good, but he felt the goat cheese overwhelmed the flavor. We think next time he should request an additional veggie to be added in to help balance out the flavor more. He does continue to rave about their Ham and Brie sandwich he usually orders and my go-to, the Highlander! Coffee is on point here no matter what we choose. Loved my dirty chai and simple brewed black coffee warmed us up on this chilly day. The place is very small and it's always busy with local students lined up to grab a table and work on their laptops with a coffee to kick back.
