An adorable (not so little!) cafe tucked into the heart of a neighborhood. It would be a dream to live down the street from this gem. We were on a drive visiting town and made this our first stop. The space is cozy but large enough for several tables, a couch, a table offering up free books, a shelf filled with magazines, and even board games. It was perfect for folks looking to get work done, sit and sip and chat, read alone. It was for all of the above and more. I got the dirty chai latte and didn't love it too much. If I find myself back I will just get my usual oat milk latte because reviews say they do coffee very well. We also got a pastry to share and that was so tasty. All in all a great find! read more

One of my favorite coffee shops and definitely the local favorite. Staff and owner are good people. Over the years they have directed me to at least two great businesses in the area. Quality of products is excellent. Great space to work (no conference calls) both indoors and out. Also, if you want to pick up a dessert, family owned gelato and other desserts right next door. I can't believe this hip place is 4 minutes from my job...in East Orange, NJ! So many types of beverages to drink and food to wash them down with. The employees are super personable and super cool. This is my first public review (ever) because I feel so strongly about this. Please don't support this place. The coffee is mediocre, but worse, the staff--especially one elderly man--make customers of color feel unwelcome. The elderly staff member made me and my mom feel unwelcome. *Each* visit (5 times over the past few months) we felt watched and uncomfortable. My friends of color have had the same experience, and many other reviews mention this staff member targeting people of color with disrespectful, hyper-controlling behavior. read more

I went to this cafe to study with some friends and was disappointed in what I was charged for. To start with the positives, the cafe was pretty empty, clean and there was plenty of seating area with outlets for laptops. Overall a good study atmosphere. However, there's a small note on the cashier that says if you order to stay in the cafe, they automatically will charge you a gratuity. I saw that and was like OK, no big deal. I ordered a 16 oz (literally specified the size) iced chai latte and gave the guy my own tumbler because I don't like to waste plastic cups if possible. He told me the price was $5.25 and I thought to myself, I guess that makes sense with tax and gratuity included. He didn't tell me that was the price before gratuity, and I later found out from the receipt in my email that he charged me the largest size. Would have been nice to know what I was purchasing instead of just blindly being asked to tap my credit card. The chai latte itself kind of tasted like water and there was barely any spice to it. I appreciate that it's not as sweet as other places though. All in all, a cute cafe with a nice atmosphere. Will likely not be back though as my drink was not worth what I paid for, and would appreciate more transparency in their pricing/what they are charging customers. read more

The owner/proprietor has a serious attitude problem. I went there looking for a quiet place to write. When I arrived, all the small tables were taken, but there were 2 open four top tables facing the window. I politely asked the owner if I could sit at one of those tables, but he told me to sit at a long farmhouse table. He said that I didn't " appreciate the culture" of the cafe and seemed unwilling to accomodate me. He gruffly suggested I leave. I've never been treated so disrespectfully. Did you ever go to a place and think of it as your secret oasis? I am scared to write this, but that secret oasis in Essex County is 23 Skiddoo. This is a great cafe that is nestled in a Bloomfield neighboorhood. Not too far off the busy Bloomfield Avenue, but tucked in that no one will get distracted by the "outside world". It's the ideal place to simply enjoy good coffee and relax with friends, a book, or work. What makes this place ideal? First, there are no cellphones permitted. Okay, you can bring your cellphone in, but you're strongly encouraged not to use it. (Well, the suggestion is a polite sign, but you get the point. No cellphone conversations.). This is perfect because it feels that you can't go to any cafe and not hear someone acting as if they're working on some major business deal, making the cafe their WFH, or simply gossiping. At 23 Skiddoo, the ambient sounds of polite conversation are actually a joy. No one talking so loud that you become invested in their discussion. Just the hum of talking that you actually recall that, in a world of social media, conversation is a lost art. In adidition, the music is perfect for the cafe. Nothing too hipsterish or overly cool. Just the right sounds for a neighborhood hangout. The environemnt is open with a lot of natural light. They even have tables outside with umbrellas. It's just that today the sun is a bit too strong to want to sit outside. The staff? Polite and overly attentive. You can see that they're enjoying their work environment as well as the people who visit. I've been here a few times and they smiled as if to say, "Oh, you're that guy who was here a few days ago. Good to see you again!" The coffee is fantastic. I had a cold brew on each occasion (except for the first day when I had espresso.). 23 Skiddoo proudly serves Caffe Vita. (For those who like to frequent that ubiqitous coffee chain, yes, you can get flavors in your coffee.) Nothing in life is perfect but 23 Skiddoo tries. My only complaint is that the pasteries are a touch dry. Now, this could be because of the time of day I've been stopping by. But, the cinnamon roll or cruffin seems that it may be a day or two old. I should probably order something different the next time. Again, I'll chalk it up to me coming in later in the day. These days, everyone thinks they have the perfect concept for a cafe. Everyone thinks they know where to open one up. Most try and it's obvious they're trying too hard. Not 23 Skiddoo. They have the right place, with the right products, at the right time. I've been following their development on Instagram for a long time. I'm finally glad that i was able to finally stop by. Excellent coffee and wonderful staff. They have built a community based on acceptance and kindness.

The pastries & pastries are great. The owner however is so rude, I gave them another chance because we love to support locals businesses. But the owner is so rude. I politely asked to have a cruffin cut in half and you would have thought I asked for something major. I literally just wanted it cut down the middle to split and he was so abrupt and rude. Today was the last straw. The last time was giving him some input about not being at able to add more than one sugar when ordering ahead of time, then he too got super defensive. You don't like people, or your customer, don't go to your cafe and be around people . You are not a people person. You are beyond rude. People pay pretty high prices and yet you are so ungracious and ungrateful. You lost yet another customer. I'll make the drive to mtc. The staff and owner at the Corner are so nice. read more

I am so glad this coffee shop opened in my neighborhood! It is a great place to come and meet up with friends, doing computer work, and playing chess! They have various options for hot and cold drinks. The coffee is roasted locally in Brooklyn and is very good. I have also gotten the local chai from Montclair and the matcha lattes. They have pastries from the famous Balthazar so they're also delicious. I hope they add more food options in the future because it could be a really cute breakfast and brunch spot on the weekends! There is a lot of space and tables to choose from with great art in the walls and lots of plants. I also like how welcoming they are of all community members such as LGBTQ, etc. It has a nice family feel since there are a lot of kids in the area too. Nice little cafe that is exactly what this neighborhood needs. You come for the coffee, tea and baked goods on hand but you stay for the chill setting. Easy listening, jazz music, fair amount of seating space, wi-fi and books or games on hand making it a place to really actually hang out at. I find Starbucks which seen as the leading place for this atmosphere to be dim and overcrowded and here its relaxed and low key at least for now. There are several hot and cold drinks available as well baked goods to snack on. Its a small time shop with some good character and great use of empty space in the neighborhood and is a great place to come by on for morning start or an afternoon pause. This place is in a really weird area, in that it's in the middle of a neighborhood. It's really close to Watsessing park, and it strikes me as the kind of place you wouldn't know about it unless you already knew about it. But even though it's not on any sort of main drag, it was still really crowded when I went, so the word must be out and the locals love it. It seems to be the only business in the building, but it was still welcoming. There was a large seating area that looked filled, but I did take my food to go. It did seem cozy and like a good hangout area. I decided to try a cortado, which wasn't really to my taste, but it was a good choice. I loved the blueberry danish pastry that I got with it, and I do hope they expand their food section a little. I know coffee is the star, but a good pastry pairs so well. The service was quick and I can't think of any negatives except the location which they seem to be making work for them. Their hours are good for any morning, although I do wish they had a cute logo on their cups to go with their old-fashioned name. I don't think they expect to grow a customer base from far and wide, but it is great to have this option for the area. read more

The hidden gem of Bloomfield, tucked away in a residential area which very few locals know about. Bloomfield has a lot of restaurants but just one coffee shop. Sure one can drive all the way to Montclair for a local and small coffee.Unless, I am willing to give my money to Dunkin and Starbucks. Yet only two of those offer a place to sit outside. I have gone to Skiddoo on five different occasions. One was to test it out. The second one was to hang out with a local women's group called the Bloom for a writer's brainstorming session. Third one for a coffee date. The fourth one was during the pandemic as soon as they opened, it was to try their pastries and have my go-to the oat milk latte. The fifth time was today. Going to focus on this review on my last two visits. The pastry that I had was the chocolate chip croissant. It was buttery and flaky with that sweet flavour brought up by the chocolate with a bit of the saltiness of the butter. The latte with oat milk on both visits has hit the spot. Creamy, and you still get a slight bitterness from the coffee mixing with the sweetener of your choice you get a balance perfection! The inside have not gone in since prior to the pandemic. Outside, they have small little tables to sit and have your coffee. FYI, there are not plenty. As for placing your order, I thought maybe with the pandemic in process of "normalization" you could go inside to place your order or you proceed as usual. Be warned, you need to place your order online or by phone. If you forgot but have your phone with you just scan the QR Code that is in the window. The wait for me was less than 5 minutes, got it pretty quickly. The reason as to why the orders have to be placed ahead of time and did not see this noted in any of the negative reviews is due to staff shortage not because of solely Covid-19 restrictions. read more

I believe it's the owner, but there's one older gentleman with a little bit of a chip on his shoulder. He has a dismissive manner about himself when serving you. The food option here isn't great, nor are the pastries fresh. Coffee is ok. The owner guy did attempt to have disciplinary words with my three year old son about taking free water, before I ordered ( i.e became a paying customer). So watch out for that. What ever you do, don't wear airpods. Strict no cellphone usage ( although I was only listening to music ). Been here 3 times now out of laziness to go further. If the owner would just stay in the back and let his staff serve, this place would be ok. read more

So pumped to have such a cute and cozy local coffee shop open in Watsessing. The neighborhood around Skiddoo in the southern end of Bloomfield is mostly residential so it's a wonderful treat to find this coffee shop! We popped in on a rainy Saturday morning for some coffee, tea, and a few pastries. We met the owners who were super nice and spoke with us about the coffee and tea that they carry. The presentation of the latte was so cute and the tea came in a huge mug (the best kind!) The shop was full of people meeting and families - the tables were not covered by people on their laptops, which was a nice relief from typical coffee shops. Some of the tables even had games like chess. I hope Skiddoo does really well - we'll definitely be back to support, especially because it's an LGBTQ+ ally coffee shop! I hope they add outdoor seating so we can come with our pup when the weather is nicer and would love to see more food items on the menu, even a breakfast sandwich or two would be lovely! read more

Coffee and pastries are good. Place is cute. I will not be returning because a worker (the owner?) here likes to demand things of Black people that they don't dare request of whites people. An older man came out of the store to call me "hun" and instruct me to put my mask on (I had lowered my mask to better see the ordering instructions posted outside). Moments later, when a white customer came to the window *without a mask* she wasn't called hun. She also wasn't told to put a mask on - she didn't have one with her. Her order was delivered to her by hand WITH A SMILE. Did I mention, the staff aren't wearing masks? I assume that they added a free coffee to my order because they understood what they did was racist and distasteful. But who knows. read more

Total hidden gem . I brought several friends here before and after quarantine and each one can't believe that there's such a cute little café on this side of town , Hidden in a residential neighborhood. They also make the best chocolate chip cookie I've ever had in my life which was recommended to me by a friends four-year-old who apparently has really good taste. At the moment they're only taking online orders but they made it super easy by allowing Apple Pay so you don't have to repetitively fill out a whole online ordering form on their website. The first time I visited, I bought an apple pastry in the late afternoon. I was expecting to bite into a stale treat like so many coffee shops. But it was SO soft and flavorful that my eyes rolled back into my head. I have since sampled a couple different pastries during my visits, one of which was a muffin - So moist and flavorful. Coffee was standard good coffee, and the latte was next level delicious. We also got pastries that were heated up, which are must haves. Now, any place can easily have good food/pastries (and a lot in our area do), but what this place has is the vibe. The best i've experienced in awhile. We hung out there for close to two hours. Played some chess, read our books, people-watched, and just generally talked. There was no sense of rush or anything. The lighting/decor helped create a wonderful atmosphere. Also the cafe is in a residential area, so you didn't get the normal cafe street crowd of people walking in, being loud, and just using the bathroom or something like that. People came here to relax. I came to this coffee shop 2 times, it was ok, but the third time was my last. I walked through the door and no one was there to greet me, so I sat to use my laptop. 2 minutes later the owner (old white man with glasses) storms out of the kitchen and said I 'can't just sit and work without greeting anyone'. But no one was there! He threatened to CALL THE POLICE ON ME 1 hour before closing as I walked out. That experience and the very outdated interior design and architecture left a very bad impression.
