Areas of improvement should include: A more congenial/attentive Server: Our server could have projected a more welcoming persona. Our server did not return to inquire about our breakfast experience. Our emptied plates remained on the table after we had finished eating. We would have preferred to sit awhile on an uncluttered table with our coffee. (We had to vocally get her attention for a refill.) Upon entering and seating, there were no words of either "Welcome to Red Eye' nor " Have a good day, see you again..." upon leaving. (Frankly, I left a generous tip anyway.) We have been to Red Eye so many times and rave about this place. We have brought all of our friends and colleagues to brunch here. We love this place so much that it's the place I chose to through a party for my husband. Mike and his wife were wonderful to work with. The food here is fresh, homemade and delicious. Visited 11/08/2019 Finally came back for something savory. It's a small place so you're probably going to have to wait if you come when it's busy. But it's worth it. My wife had the soup and sandwich special (sorry, I forgot what she had and I'm finally finishing this review in late December! lol!) while I had a classic grilled chicken with mozz, roasted red pepper, pesto on ciabatta (yeah, I remembered what I had!) Great blueberry pancakes, best in Montclair but the service is slow, especially on weekends. I have also found that some, actually one person on the wait-staff is extremely rude. I have spoken to the manager about this the two times that this person has either ignored me or just walked away instead of taking my order at the counter after I had to wait for her to finish her prolonged conversation with a customer or taking my motney to finish my transaction. Has gone down hill completely - I was a loyal customer to this place for many years. I would drive all the way from union city to eat here , go to the farmers market. I always had a good experience until today. Our ticket was completely ignored in favor of take out orders. We sat for over 30 mins wanting for sliced banana and toast with our four month old in tow. The server was completely unapologetic and rude. It was obvious that they didn't even start our order until we said something , because the kale in omelet was basically raw. My girlfriend was disappointed in her root down dish. I feel sad that I will never come back here and after advocating and coming back to this place for many years. read more

Sometimes its nice to venture out of Jersey City and see what food ventures other towns have to offer. On this particular Saturday we decided to make our way to Montclair, which has a pretty good food scene from what we are told. I used to venture to Montclair a lot in my early 20s but lets be serious that was only to hit up Just Jakes. So after checking some yelp reviews on varies places we decided to check out Red Eye Cafe and glad we did. REC has a good amount of tables for parties of 2, 4, and 6 there wasn't much of a wait when we got there around 1pm which was nice because beau was hungry. It took some time for someone to come by and to take our drink and food order... like a bit too much time for that to happen. Once our waitress came by we knew exactly what we wanted to eat and drink. I ordered the vanilla latte and boyfriend got the chai latte. He ordered the Highlander and I ordered an omelet and of course to share the brussels sprouts. .....and then we waited, I mean literally waited for so long to get our coffee. I can understand food taking time but drinks, gosh that took too long. By the time we actually got our drinks our food came out and I just felt like I couldn't enjoy my coffee. Let's get to the good part though.. the FOOD. The food was really good. The brussels sprouts with bacon had a nice kick to it and perfectly cooked with a nice crispy to them. My omelet was a good size that was accompanied with a fruit salad and multigrain toast. The highlander was delicious and I can see that beau was really happy with it. Everything was so yummy and I was full all day! Does the food make up for the slow wait staff... ehh I think a bit. I feel like if I go back at least I know what to expect. Our go-to brunch spot when we want to treat ourselves. The corned beef hash is unlike anything I've ever eaten, it really is delicious and makes it hard to order other things since it's so tasty! The scotch egg banh mi is very interesting and also incredible delicious, as is the breakfast ramen which I recently tried. Very reasonable prices for Montclair, it can get very busy on weekends so anticipate that. But the food and service is consistently great, if you're hungry and impatient order a coffee to enjoy while you wait for a table. I recommend the dirty chai! read more

Brunch outside , on a beautiful sunny afternoon? I think yes ! This is the perfect place to come have some breakfast , brunch anything you'd like the food is great always ! The ambiance is sort of like a hipster vibe, I love it! People come here to do some work , because they offer free WiFi or simply just to have some great conversation with your girlfriends or your significant other. One thing I will say about this place is that the food takes a little long to come out, that's about the only issue I had. For food I got the Greek yogurt, nothing too crazy but it was yummy. What I loved was my smoked Salmon sandwich ! Unlike other places they give you a good amount of smoked salmon , I hate when cafes are cheap with the amount they put, but red eye did a great job in providing a decent portion of smoked salmon in my sandwich. In general their sandwiches are great, I would highly recommend getting one if it's your first time coming here. I also had a double shot macchiato, great ! Service was awesome. Once it gets warm enough outside, lots more tables available. On the hour, there's a line, but come 15 minutes before 9 or 10 or 11, no line. It has a nice vibe and my meal was great. I often wonder how a place that's so busy with a line of customers waiting for tables, allows people to sit on their computers. read more

I actually never tried the food here but anytime I'm looking to get coffee/tea after dinner with friends in Montclair, I always find myself ending up at Red Eye Cafe. This cafe is open later than most in the area which is how I ended up here in the first place. I'm so glad I found this place because it is now one of my go to spots to catch up with friends. I actually never sat inside yet because I absolutely love the outdoor seating they have here - they have a few tables outside and a chalkboard wall where you can write on, lots of flowers.. ah you just have to come here to see for yourself,  it's just very pleasant, cozy and relaxing. The staff is very friendly, energetic and they make really good drinks. I always get the Yogic Chai tea (hot or cold) and it always hits the spot with the perfect amount of spice. I can spend hours here.. that's how much I like it. It's a really chill spot to study or to catch up with friends. I tried coming here a few months back and there was over an hour wait for three people on a Saturday. This time I was skeptical to come back assuming the wait would just be the same. However, to my surprise, the wait for three was only 15 minutes and the restaurant wasn't as packed as last time. The place is small that offers seating for maybe 30 people max INSIDE and seating outside the side of the place that can seat about 10-13 people. Many people come through for a quick cup of coffee or to satisfy their sweet tooth with a cookie or a cupcake. The iced vanilla chai latte I got was surprising very delicious. Having always drunk vanilla chai lattes from Starbucks, this place is definitely a good competition. Red Eye Cafe doesn't offer an extensive list of coffee choices, but it's the way the espresso is made that distinguishes the flavors of their coffee. Anyways, the food portion is very generous. Being indecisive and not wanting to eat too much, I opt for the simple, yet flavorful French toast, topped with whipped cream and strawberries. Unfortunately the French toast wasn't the best I've ever had and the next time I go, I may order something more unique that's offered on the menu. The service as this place was great...our waiter was awesome and attentive and the efficiency of the staff at cleaning tables and turnaround time was on point. Overall I rated the place with three stars. While the service was great and the food was good, it's not a place I would wait to eat breakfast at. This place is pretty great and I am so glad to have found it. My husband and I were waiting to be seated at a very popular spot in Montclair and decided to take a walk because the long wait time. This place caught our eye and we decided to go here instead. We came here during the outdoor dining phase of the coronavirus pandemic and this place was very accommodating. The outdoor has a pleasing aesthetic in an alley way with nice lights. My husband ordered the Egg White Zucchini Frittata Sandwich and I ordered the House Omelette without meat. We also ordered a french toast to share. Everything came out in a brown doggie bag and we were provided utensils and even hand wipes. It all tasted great and I loved how they had many healthy options. But I must say, THE FRENCH TOAST IS AMAZING. Oh my gosh, they used the best bread for it and it had the perfect texture. Overall, the staff was incredibly nice and service is excellent. That french toast is worth making a few trips back if you ask me. Would recommend for sure! read more

This cafe is perfect for high schoolers coming in and out during lunch but a complete nightmare for those trying to enjoy a mid day brunch/lunch. It is packed and their service is slowed down a ton. I have been meaning to try Red Eye Cafe for such a long time. Unfortunately, while I am in Montclair quite often, I always seem to end up across town. Finally had the opportunity yesterday and was more than pleased. I was somewhat fortunate to arrive in the early afternoon, after the breakfast rush and was seated almost immediately. The place is quite small but very comfortable and decorated shabby rustic which I really love. On the suggestion of our friendly server, I ordered the Huevos Rancheros which was really uncharacteristic of me, as I usually stick to more basic breakfast fare. All I can say is wow! Absolutely delicious with a side of well done breakfast potatoes and a glass of their signature iced coffee, the meal was memorable. Likewise, the kids' chocolate chip pancakes which were equally as delicious. Tasted like they blended chocolate with the batter as well as infused the chips to create something absolutely fantastic. Sucks being an adult sometimes. Anyway, as the other enthusiastic reviews state, this place is a winner. I actually think it will be my new go to breakfast place in Montclair, at least for the foreseeable future. Perhaps next time we'll even sit outside. Awesome. read more

Well this spot needs an outpost in Jersey City... please? This place has been bookmarked since they opened, a must visit on the Montclair to do list and I'm so happy that I was able to check it off the list. This place is charming coffee shop, super chill and the folks were as equally chill. If this ia reflection of Montclair, Montclair's hip. Perfectly brewed Intelligentsia Coffee to go with my vegan tomato soup and grilled cheese with caramelized onions. The soup was delicious; almost sauce like more than soup like but, I'm going to say that's the case because it's not made with any dairy. The chunks of zucchini were delicious. I can see why Lauren G ran there to get some since it's a special and not served daily. The grilled cheese made with thick cuts of cheddar, caramelized onion jam on toasted multigrain bread was another winner. The cheddar's a bit overpowering but matched with those caramelized onions and dipped into that soup, I pretty much was like damn, this is f*&*^ing good. So good, that I didn't need to eat the other whole other half. It could have been a smidge warmer for the cheeses sake but, I blame the cheddar, it just doesn't melt well. The accompanied greens were a great and unexpected touch. The price for this great lunch was on point. Not sure if they do coffee refills since mine wasn't but, I also didn't ask so, that's something I'd love to find out because I'd be sitting there all day getting my Yelp on if that were the case.* I look forward to coming back! * Free Wifi! read more

Thanks to Yelp i discovered this hidden spot in Montclair..and by hidden i mean hidden. I drove past it twice, but maybe its because I'm naturally blonde. But on a better note, the place is small and very intimate. It doesn't give me the usual warm and cozy feeling like other coffee places that I've been to. it might be that theres actual tables and hard wood chairs. who knows. 1)medium caramel latte---nothing too special, but wasn't terrible 2)$7.50 special-- tomato & zuchhini soup: tasted like a damn jar of pre go sauce. i make my own gravy so this is bad. it had no flavour. was far from a soup. the veggies were good in it tho salad- -nice size amount of baby greens, but the dressing was basically evoo&vinegar or something. nothing to see here really sandwhich--grilled cheddar cheese with caramelized onions jam. so amazing. this was the show stopper of the meal. the flavour was on the damn point, i love onions and the bread was tasty. i liked this spot but to be honest..i wasn't too crazy about it. nothing really stood out to make me come back. but WHO knows! read more

Phenomenal. We came into town to hit a place across the street without knowing it wasn't open on Sundays (blame the Mrs - not me!) but as usual - Yelp was there for us to find a 'Plan B'. Weird to think I'm a few years older than Elvis now and this is my second 'Elvis' food item within the same month. Starting July with the Elvis Shake at The Pop Shop and now devouring the "Fat Elvis" breakfast. (At this rate I won't be around too much longer.) Everything here was outstanding - from my sandwich (with a small green salad which hopefully offsets all the damage I'm doing to my body!) to the kids' pancakes to the Mrs' Huevos Rancheros special (with almost every bite she had to let us know how impressed she was). Killer coffee (the large cup of their 'Red Eye' will have your body amped up like you just ate a jar of Stacker 2's) and really cool artwork and layout made for a really great Sunday morning breakfast. I need to update my review because I tried the food and was happy. This place is awesome! Any time I am in the area, I try to stop by. First of all, as I mentioned today, the coffee is good. I have had a dirty chai (aweosome) and an iced latte. Both were strong but not super bitter and hit the spot. I ordered the walnut salad. It was SO GOOD. Really fresh greens, a light balsamic dressing, fresh pear slices, creamy goat cheese, and some candied walnuts. Everything went together so well and they gave a huge portion for just $7.95. Great price and awesome salad. It had just the right amount of dressing and the perfect amount of each ingredient so that you had enough of the different elements but nothing was overpowering. I would like to try the other food like sandwiches and soup on another day. As previously mentioned, the ice cream is bomb. Both the salted caramel and banana cream pie are excellent, and you can combine them in one order for an even better combination. The salted caramel has the right amount of salt and actually has a caramel flavor unlike some salted caramel ice creas. The banana cream pie ice cream had like actual pieces of banana cream pie it seemed. Finally, the service is good. They have free wi-fi, check on you from time to time without being overbearing but also not ignoring you, and just make the atmosphere nice. It's a good place to have a peaceful lunch or coffee while getting some work done. If this was closer to me, I think I would be back all the time. Even now, I think I've been here like 4 or more times in the last 2 months, sometimes for just coffee and sometimes to actually eat and/or use the internet. read more

Their drip coffee is decent but I wasn't a fan of the meal that I got; Green Eggs and Ham. It was incredibly bland, in my opinion, and even adding mounds of hot sauce and ketchup did not help at all. The combination of ingredients in the eggs definitely has potential (I got it because it sounded really good) but they definitely need to experiment with adding more flavor. Where do I begin? I've been here a few times, I'm actually sitting here right now as I type this out cuz my frustration is building. Let me start by saying, I'm a waitress, at an extremely understaffed restaurant. If any one understands long wait times and a little bit of a frenzy during busy hours... it's me. I sit here on a Sunday morning dead smack in the middle of brunch hours. There's honestly no line, it's pretty relaxed. A couple people waiting for indoor seating but plenty outdoor seating that's first come first serve. My boyfriend and I walk in to 3 girls behind the counter (one making coffee and the other two I guess taking names) I dunno what kind of bad day they're both having at 10:30 AM but we were greeted with smug faces and the most unenthusiastic attitude. They told us to grab menus and seat ourselves outside and someone would come over to us. We sat at the table literally right outside the door, waited 10 minutes until my boyfriend went inside to order. Our order : one iced dirty chai, sweet scramble and breakfast burger medium rare. Waited another 20 minutes until we both realized I didn't get my drink. I go inside asking if the drink is ready , barista grabs it out of a fridge.....????? I proceed to ask "oh was I supposed to come in to grab it? And she says "no we thought it was an Uber order sorry" ..... ok??? Wait another 20 mins (so 40 mins total) for food which Honestly doesn't bother me, as I can sit across from my handsome boyfriend for hours and starve. I swear by the sweet scramble and THIS is why I come here. It's always good. But my boyfriend's medium rare burger was VERY well done. Like well done to the point it looks gray in color. And the bacon they use in the jam was burnt to a crisp (black in color). You don't give a man who runs red lights a well done burger. We didn't really want to wait for new food (not that a waitress ever came out to check on us anyways) so he sat there with his head down and finished it. We sit for ANOTHER half hour as we're simply just enjoying eachothers company, and realize this is the moment we can totally skip the check cuz not one person in an hour and a half has Checked on us. But my boyfriend is a much more honest individual than myself. Paid up and still tipped 20% on literally no service aside the food runner. Oh, also in the hour and a half sitting here, the table across the side walk from us has yet to be bussed. A plate of eggs and two drinks just sitting there attracting bugs. Now, will I return? Probably. Mostly due to trying to learn the sweet caramelization of onions on the sandwich I enjoy, so I can then recreate at home and not have a reason to return here. And to clarify, Not cuz the food is bad, the staff and service just sucks. Which is sad cuz they seem to hire attractive people, which is nice to look at, until you realize their lack of personality, which is necessary in the food industry. Some advice, try smiling maybe. UPDATE: we walked past red eye two hours after we left and not only were our plates still on our table, but the eggs were still on the table across from us... gave us a laugh. Astoundingly fresh coffee and the food here is a hidden gem! I recently tried the Red Eye Hash and was blown away by the rich flavors. The chopped corned beef hash is incredibly fresh and very hearty, without making you feel uncomfortably full. The gravy is also delicious and has a slight kick to it.
