It's very good food but very bad service. I ordered 2 Cuban sandwiches for pickup at 2 today. Woman on the phone says 15 to 20 mins. I show up at 2:20 and she checks in the back and says they're just finishing up. Ok no problem I assume she is correct that she checked that it's almost done. Another 15 mins go by and a different woman who I assume is the manager says the tickets never printed to the back and they're just starting to work on it. Who knows whether that's even true. She says sorry and "there's slim pickings in the pastry case if you want something". It really wasn't that empathetic, but at least she said sorry. I just want my sandwiches, not your cookies that have sitting been in the case all day. By the time I got the food, it was a whole 45 mins to make 2 sandwiches. And this isn't the first time with this place either. There was another time in the past where I ordered food for pickup that was extremely late and I had to threaten that I was leaving without my order to get my food made. Brunch is the thing for my family so we've tried new spots in every city/state we visit. The Red Eye Cafe gets the rare honor of earning 5 stars. There's a good bit of a wait on the weekend for parties larger than two, but that's expected. The Chipotle cheese sandwich with shave brussel sprouts and apple salad blew my mind. I was already reserved thinking it's missing more protein and might be just okay. On the contrary it was balanced and flavorful. The salad was on point as it wasn't heavily dressed and refreshing to my palate between bites of my candied bacon. (I did mention thinking the sandwich may need more protein...it didn't). The Red Eye hash got two-thumbs up from my son, a foodie in the making. Service was fast, with a smile, and my coffee kept hot. Was very disappointed with my experience at Red Eye Cafe. We came early on a Sunday at 10 AM so we can go home and catch the 1 pm football game on a timely manner. However, our food came over an hour later, which is really ridiculous for some eggs and pancakes. I had to have them reheat my latte because they took so long. We ordered french toast, choco chip pancakes, and red eye hash. DO NOT GET THE PANCAKES. They were legitimately horrible. I don't know how you can mess up choco chip pancakes, especially when you're a brunch spot, but this place managed to do so. NASTY. The french toast was average. My husband's red eye hash tasted weird. We are never coming back here due to the insanely long wait time and horrible food. read more

Wow there's a first time for everything... Yelp finally let me down. I was doing a college visit at MSU with my daughter and decided to show her Montclair downtown area. She wanted a coffee and a muffin and this place had the best reviews. All I can say is there was a huge wait, girl behind the counter with a huge attitude for no reason, coffee was mediocre, bakery item was dry and not very good. We placed our order and 30 minutes later still no food. We asked one of our two servers what was happening he went to the kitchen came back and said they're plating your food now. 10 minutes later we asked to speak to the manager , he went to the kitchen came back and said your order is up next. Came in on a Saturday at about noon and found an empty table outside for two. We ordered two sandwiches (grilled chicken and a cuban), fries, candied bacon, and two lemonades. It took more than 30 minutes to get our food. The candied bacon was sweet and gooey but honestly I couldn't taste the meat. It took another 15 minutes to get our check and leave. Stumbled upon this cute cafe while in Montclair today and I cant wait to go back! We walked in and were greeted by the smell of good coffee. After seating ourselves outside we got an oat milk caramel latte and mocha, both were amazing. Finally we decided on the Pesto Broccoli Scramble and Huevos Rancheros as our meals. I loved the creativity and flavor of the scramble sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed each bite of the huevos as well. A quaint cafe with a modern hip vibe to it. Creative and good food. Space is small so not great for groups but great for an intimate get together. Parking is not easy in the area as it's residential. I had the waffle with fried egg sandwich and a side of fruits, which was very tasty. My cappuccino was not very good and I wouldn't order it again. I would like to write a review on Aunt Miss Christine Handmade Pierogi which operates out of The Red Eye Cafe. I'm sure my Steve and I will try The Red Eye Cafe really soon. My significant other and I first discovered Aunt Miss Christine Handmade Pierogi last Spring at the Farmer's market held in the courtyard of the Bloomfield Public Library. The Farmer's market is held on Tuesday afternoons. Christine is a warm friendly person who treats customers like people rather than cash cows. Last year the price for a bag of eight pierogi was ten dollars. This year a bag of ten depending on the type is between twelve and fifteen dollars. Aside from traditional Pierogi like potato and farmer cheese, potato and smoked cheese, and sauerkraut and potato, Christine offers cheese steak and meatloaf pierogi. Nothing like a taste of Philadelphia and Mom's old fashioned meatloaf. My Steve and I really enjoy the meatloaf, pot cheese and potato and smoked cheese and potato. If you're a dessert lover Christine offers blueberry and strawberry and pumpkin pierogi. My only suggestion would be for the Pierogi to be a bit bigger. They are so delicious I want more. read more

I have been enjoying the Red Eye Cafe since it opened and it's still one of the best coffee/brunch cafes in New Jersey. Great place for dates or catching up with friends. I always look forward seeing the artwork for sale hanging up all around. My go to beverages are the sludge coffee with simple syrup and Mocha with whip cream. The staff is friendly. The menu has amazing breakfast and lunch options to choose from. If I had to pick, the tarragon salad, heuvos ranchero, 2 eggs with corn-beef hash, and the blue velvet are my preferred options. Came here for brunch on Saturday with a group of friends, and I had a great time. They did not take reservations, but they told me to come about half hour early to put my name on the list if I wanted to be seated at a certain time. Thats exactly what I did. They called me within half hour and we were seated by a friendly staff member. I love the cozy atmosphere and all the decorations including the books along the wall. The food was phenomenal, along with the coffee. The green eggs and ham was definitely not the taste I was expecting, but in a good way. Definitely unique. The roasted brussel with candied bacon was great as well. I tried the blueberry pancakes which were also tasty. I loved that they did not rush us out of there even though it was packed. It was nice, relaxing brunch with friends with good food. Prices were on point. Metered street parking. Perfect for brunchin! The place was packed at noon on a Saturday, but the emolyees were welcoming and the wait was short. We got the popular Green Eggs and Ham and it was delicious! My boyfriend claims he hates kale, but he ate the whole thing because of the flavors of onions and guyere mixed in. The hot cocoa was homemade and awesome. For brunch I shared an order of the brussels, Shitake Salad with side of fried eggs and the chipotle cheese sandwich. The salad base was dressed kale leaves topped with roasted almonds and mushrooms. Heyyyy we have loved coming to you guys for years we came there Sunday sat down in a few minutes which was cool and then one hour and 10 minutes later still did not have our food!! We got up and left I have never done that in a restaurant in my life! Great local brunch spot in Montclair! The inside is small, cozy and inviting. They also open up a small section on the outside when it warms up. The outside seating is also nicely decorated with plants, chalk board walls and in between the brick exterior of the other building. They will tend to get pretty busy for brunch so there's a chance you may have a short wait, but usually nothing too bad! The cold brew sludge coffee is solid. If you're the flavored latte type, the iced caramel latte is delicious! It's still strong, has coffee taste and not overwhelmingly sweet. They have the little coffee bar as well, so you could always grab a coffee on the go. As for the food, I always get the highlander. This is a scotch bahn mi. It has hard boiled eggs fried with pork and shrimp sausage and spicy mayo on ciabatta. It is amazing! The ciabatta is extremely fresh, spicy mayo gives a great touch without overpowering it. The hard boiled eggs have a nice coating and are lightly fried. This combination is amazing and something you don't see every day. So I came here because my girlfriends wanted to grab brunch in Montclair. There's no parking lot but only street parking so beware to look for open spots wherever you can. Once inside the amazing auora of coffee hits you like a blast. There's decent amount of seating so you get seated fairly quickly. The servers kind of hover though (they asked us if we were ready to order three times and even gave us our check before we even asked for it..rude). Anyways, I ordered the omelet but they gave me the wrong one (i ordered bacon and spinach but they gave me ham and spinach), the toast was burnt and they didn't give us butter to go with it. I've definitely experienced better for $8. The one thing I did like was their tea, it was a little under $2 for this huge mug (i got their white rose). Anyways, I think this place is still pretty cute but I just wouldn't order actual food, more like..i would come here for a cup of tea and do work or chill/meet up with people. read more

The coffee is consistently good as is the food (brownies, empanadas, various sandwiches). But the staff is really unfriendly- and I can't say this applies to all staff. Just the people I've interacted with when I come to pick up coffee. Nobody acknowledges your existence. I understand the place is busy - understandably so. But people don't come back for the food, they come back for hospitality. So I've stopped ordering from here and have started going to another local coffee shop in which you are always welcomed with a hello and their coffee is amazing. A friendly face goes a long way. It was also a good amount of salmon too which im happy about because some places can be a bit stingy. They also include a mini salad on the side! The real star was the sweet mashed potatoes. They were perhaps the best mashed sweet potatoes I've ever had! It tasted so sweet but not overly sweet. Had a hint of cinnamon. My friend who is vegan came with me and he ordered the pear sandwich and actually loved it! They have some interesting combinations of flavors but it works. Been coming here for a while now, always for coffee and always to go. The food looked excellent every time I would stay while waiting for my coffee to be prepared, especially on weekends. Well, I finally decided to come out and grab brunch here this sunday. The wait was only 10 minutes which is amazing as its usually 30 minutes to an hour at these times. I attribute it to the rain. There is a little breakfast nook with newspapers that you can read while waiting for your table. Be prepared to wait if its packed as people do not rush out here and take time to sit down to chit chat and enjoy their coffee and breakfast / brunch. I came in determined to get the french toast which is my go to and it looked amazing when I saw it here. Once seated they had the Pastrami Smoked Salmon on the specials which completely threw me off and that's what I ordered. We also ordered the Huevos Rancheros which were huge and very tasty. I went here with 5 if my friends, all ordering different dishes, and not one of them had any redeeming qualities. 2 of us ordered the highlander with "scotch egg" but the scotch egg was basically a hard boiled egg and felt like a golf ball to bite into paired with the tough untoasted bread. A scotch egg by definition is a soft boiled egg. My friends ordered the french toast with some questionable(?) strawberries that were not fresh strawberries, or not even the soft sweet ones, but they were sort of soggy wet strawberries. The hash was parboiled with no crispy edges, just basically boiled diced potatoes. The brussel sprouts were small, soggy, had no semblance of the texture of brussel sprouts and drowning in a very strong sauce that overpowered everything else. Servers were friendly, but it took us maybe 20 minutes to get our order taken, and another 25-30 minutes before we got our food. There is no sense of urgency from any of the servers or front of the house, despite being the only table not served yet at the time. We all left very unsatisfied and underwhelmed at the food and service and we had to call someone down multiple times to get our check. Only thing slightly worth was our drinks. Maybe they should stick with drinks and pastries instead of a restaurant with pretty lackluster food and painstaking wait times. You know, I was pleasantly surprised by this place. My fiance and I had just finished the Donut 5K and were looking for a warm place to get a good meal. We didn't really know what we were looking for, but we DID want some local flavor. Luckily, this place was right down the street from the end of the race. Now, the place is tiny. Didn't take long to get a table, and the staff were really attentive. I ordered the Highlander, a Scotch Egg Bahn Mi...like, wtf? It was delicious. A perfect (and huge) sandwich with a giant scotch egg sliced on crispy bread, pickled carrots and a sriracha mayo dressing, little side salad. Was really tasty! Was also really big. I used Red Eye as a coffee shop where I could sit and knock out a few hours of computer work, but this definitely seems to be more of a casual cafe eatery than a beverage stop. Fortunately, employees were happy enough to leave me to my furtive typing since there were a few other open tables for the dining customers. Full service, though I'm sure you could grab and go. My cafe au lait was perfectly made with a nice thick froth. There was a selection of muffins, biscotti, pumpkin bread and brownies in a display case up front. Menu items included breakfast egg sandwiches, fruit salad, and other assorted lunch sandwiches and salads. Everything sounded delicious, and others in the shop seemed very happy. Very laid back, clean and cozy shop. Tables were mostly for 2-4 people, though could easily be moved together for larger groups. I love the tiling along the walls, and even the bathroom matches the decor and is super clean. I'd definitely return to work, grab lunch, or read for awhile on an afternoon off. read more
