At first we thought the sauces were wrong but we figured out what was throwing us off - the balsamic dip includes onions. It also has too much vinegar that didn't mix with the oil. No one wanted that, so we shared the other requested sauces. The only real downside beyond that, the grilled shrimp was not grilled. Otherwise tasted good, chicken sandwich seemed good, and I love the crispy fries that come with the sandwich. Good coleslaw, good disco fries... The Caldwell Diner has upped their game. Going from slightly above average to one of the better diners in the area. Last week I ordered a Greek Salad which was outstanding. This morning I ordered a Greek Omelette which was great as well. It wasn't the average run of the mill diner omelette. It was truly gourmet with lots of fresh spinach, tomato's and feta. Met some family members at Caldwell Diner recently. I ordered the Florentine Benny which was just average. I asked the server if I could sub fresh fruit for the home fries and he said that I could not. So, I ordered the fruit anyway, but I never got it. Caldwell Diner is a solid pick for diners in the area. It has a cute interior. Service is always good here. I've been here a few times for breakfast and dinner and it never disappoints. Most recently I was craving disco fries and tried Caldwell Diner for them and they did not disappoint. We also got the Cheesecake which was mind blowing. This isn't the diner my mom used to love. I've been here 3 times in as many years. 1. The eggs benedict was beyond awful. The eggs sat atop a raw english muffin with so much bad tasting hollaindaise sauce, it was sickening. I left the entire meal, and I mean the ENTIRE meal, and the waitress didn't bat an eye when I asked her to take the dish away. Nor did she ask me why I didn't eat it. She just gave us the check. 2. The hamburger panini (no cheese) wasn't a panini at all. it was a burger on a rosemary flatbread (?), not even grilled in a press, and the most godawful tasting thing ever. The rosemary was so powerful, it permeated the burger, which I tried to eat alone. 3. The taylor ham egg & cheese sandwich was awful. The taylor ham wasn't burnt, but it must've been cooked on a dirty grill because the entire sandwich tasted burnt. The WHOLE THING went into the garbage. I'm done paying for food that I'm ultimately forced to throw away. My mom used to love this place, and ate here often. I gave this place a chance, 3 in fact. WOW! Great service, amazing food, and cozy space. This diner is deceptively larger than it seems from the outside, since the building is longggg. We had some great lunch and even though we didn't get to try them, it seems like they have a great selection of hot teas which is uncommon for diners. My husband ordered the omelet and I got 2 eggs one without the yolk with corned beef - eggs were cooked perfectly sunny side up and runny just how I like it . One of the best diners in the area. A classic, Greek diner. You can order anything - breakfast, lunch or dinner and you cannot go wrong. You can't do that in all diners! Some dishes I must point out: their challah French toast is top tier. They are known for it! Such THICK pieces of challah, like half the loaf it seems like, they use the best challah to make it too. Also love their pulled pork nachos, spinach pie, cheesecake, burgers, curly fries, and I can honestly go on! They also have top notch service. The Caldwell Diner is consistently the best diner around. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, it doesn't matter. The food is wonderful. There's no fear of sticking to the same one or two items. Everything is well made. French toast, pancakes, omelets, Bennys, all wonderful. Tried the chicken scampi a few weeks ago. Had the stuffed sole with potatoes and string beans tonight. I witnessed a server refuse to serve a Latte or a heated cup of Milk for a nice little old Latino couple obviously out for a special breakfast. And I could hear the server flat out refuse to serve heated milk for the little old lady. Then when the Gentleman got up to leave, the Owner/Manager told him in a LOUD voice that there is a Coffee Shop across the street He can go there if he wants Coffee... Worse place !!! It's a shame this is a local business in Caldwell and the owner and stuff treat our child with intimidation and fear. My 12yr has been there twice with friends and they have been disrespected and intimidated both times. Once the waiter ran after them into the parking lot to ask for a tip!! What grown man runs after 11 & 12yrs old girls into a parking lot? Then again she went with friends and they were leaving a tip and the owner decided to tell them they need to leave $15.00 tip. Everyone know that it is not mandatory to leave a tip. It sucks for the waiter cause that how they make there money .I have worked in the restaurant business for 22 yrs and no place has ever allowed us to run after someone cause they didn't tip us or suggest what tip they need to leave me. My daughter was pretty upset at the fact that this is the only place in town that treats her like this. When my husband and I want back to talk to the owner he just laughed at us and said they did nothing wrong and that our kids were lying. Atmosphere: The Caldwell Diner is located in downtown Caldwell. It's located on the corner with plenty of parking (which can be challenging with diners in the downtown). The inside has plenty of booth, tables, a full-length bar, and even a salad bar. It's a cute, modern, diner. Coffee: The waiter brewed a brand new pot of coffee, which was nice. It was good coffee, and I couldn't have asked for better. Food: The Caldwell Diner has everything a diner has typically. There is all day breakfast, plenty of lunch, and dinner options, as well as specials. It even had a unique salad bar, which is something you don't see in a lot of diners. I decided to order the pork chops. Pork chops are one of my favorite dinner meals. It was a "complete meal" and came with the salad bar, soup, the meal, and even dessert. The salad bar was good but could have used more dressing. The only options were ranch, oil and vinegar, Italian, and something else creamy. It had plenty of options, including two different kinds of greens, tomatoes, onions, beets, and mixed bean salad.  In all, it was one of the better salad bars I've seen. For my soup, I chose the barley. It was hot and creamy, and I have no complaints. My pork chops were cooked well and were meaty. They weren't overcooked but just the right amount. I chose broccoli and a baked potato. The entire meal was great, and I can't complain. Dessert: Since my meal came with dessert, I chose rice pudding to go. They packed it in a coffee mug, and I ate it in our airport while my husband filed the flight plan. I've never tried rice pudding before, so I have nothing to compare it too. It wasn't overly sweet but good. Service: Our service started slow, but the waiter got better as time went on. The food came out quickly, which was nice because we were on a time crunch. I was there again this week for dinner for the first time in a while. Two outstanding waiters took care of me. I am in love with their string beans - clearly fresh and simply sautéed with I think just fresh garlic and butter but cooked well, not almost raw, which I prefer. I had delicious flounder stuffed with flavorful and sweet fresh crab, which comes with a salad and choice of potato. I asked if I could instead have double string beans and they were accommodating at no extra cost. I know they had a staff shortage for a while, as the owner confirmed, but getting back to normal. It's not 24 hours like many NJ diners, and the menu is a bit more limited than what you may expect from a diner but this is a good thing because the quality is a step above. I've only had classic diner food here and I've always really enjoyed it- grilled cheese, fries, breakfast, etc. If you're in the mood for breakfast I highly recommend the combo that comes with eggs, bacon, sausage, and french toast- it's delicious and their french toast is very good. Needed to kill some time this morning and decided to grab breakfast at Caldwell Diner; been a while for me eating here. Place looks great with a more modern feel than I remember. Clean and comfortable. Some great breakfast options -- healthy & delicious, in addition to diner classics. Tried the Nova-Avo Toast. Delicious, fresh, and a generous portion. Friendly, attentive service. Options to dine in or out; helpful during COVID. I live in town and usually choose somewhere further if grabbing breakfast. The service here was absolutely amazing! Very efficient and friendly. I felt very well taken care of! There was not a single flaw in the food; I ordered the Caldwell Campanelle and it had the perfect amount of ingredients and flavor. I also love the way they do the dinner menu from 4pm-9pm with soup, salad, beverage, and dessert included at no additional cost!
