I came to this diner with my whole family, so we got a feel for what dishes it had to offer. I loved the Greek dishes on the menu. I ordered the Greek sampler plate which had three different specials to enjoy -- the spinach pie, the mousaka, and the pasticcio (sp?). It was delicious. But it was way too much for one person to eat. And it was a bit pricey. But the fresh flavors and great taste made it worth it. If I lived in the area, I would have taken a doggie bag home, but I didn't want to leave the food in a warm car. The side salads were the best we've had at any diner. So fresh and crispy. My five year old ended up ordering a salad bc it was so good. My husband ordered a Greek sandwich. He loved it. My seven year old ordered the adult fried shrimp plate. She loved it but it was one of the most expensive items on the menu. I wish they would have had a children's fried shrimp. Kids love fried shrimp. The thing that annoyed me: the table was too small. Once all of our meals were delivered, we were so crowded. I just want to finish up lunch and get out of there. I really enjoyed the diner, but I think I'll come with just my husband and I next time. The tables are too small for a hungry family of four. And there were no coat hooks that I could find for all of our stuff. ... but, I digress. This was the first bad meal I've ever had on the East Coast. Coming from where I lived on the West Coast I will tell you the food is amazing on the East Coast but this restaurant sucks and when I tell you it sucks do not come here.. !! Then when I brought up how bad the food was the waitress said to come back into weeks so I assume there's going to be a new cook.. The good news is that the owner didn't charge me for my meal and said she had no idea that I would be the first person ever to complain that it was bad food c'mon really .. I told her to check her reviews.. I'm not the first .. and by the way if you're looking for anything gluten-free do not come here... The good news is that the person that waited on me was super nice but even she knew the food wasn't good as she told me to try back in a couple of weeks and said she understood... Fast forward!! I was contacted by one of the new owners of the Montclair diner explaining to me that him and his partner just took it over and asked me please to try it again. It was a very nice note sent to me and I thought what the heck I'm going to go in there Friday morning without responding to the note. OMG! This is probably the best diner I have been to in years! I was in town visiting a friend and decided to take the kids out to brunch. The food was A-MA-ZING!!! I had the eggs benedict over crab cake with home fries (mouth watering delicious)! We also ordered sweet toast which is their specialty version of french toast (sweet and just melts in your mouth!) My 4 yr old son gave the kid's burger and fries an eye popping thumbs up! If my 11 month old could talk I'm sure she would approve of her mashed potatoes. But besides the food what makes this place awesome is the friendly staff. My waitress (Jenny?) even kept my 4yr old entertained while I cared for my 11 month old. This place has a real classic and vintage diner feel. A family friendly place that I would recommend to anyone looking for great food, friendly and welcoming staff, and great atmosphere. One place in Montclair that has given me this expression of comfort and acceptance is The Montclair Char-Broil, also known to many as simply "Montclair Diner." Think Pops Barbershop in "Luke Cage" or the Central Perk coffeehouse from "F.R.I.E.N.D.S." Montclair Diner serves as the diner where you get delightful meals for prices that will certainly surprise you once you get the tab. Combined with the cordial demeanor everyone commits to in the diner, it would be preposterous to believe you could find a better place in Montclair to relax and eat than here. On a typical day like today, you are greeted by Gus Makris, the owner of Montclair Diner. He is the father of the establishment. I know he is reading this right now so I won't tell everyone that he told me he's 76 years of age now. Oops. Did I do that? Regardless of the number, Gus displayed his family attitude towards me ever since I can remember. Every time I go in there now, I am greeted with a powerful Greek handshake and the best chicken noodle soup, on the house. I can't even call the servers, "servers." They are more like my caretakers who grace me with the lovely meals that permeate the crevices of my hypothalamus. Today, my hypothalamus cried for some fresh apple pancakes, butter-caressed wheat toast, beautifully mashed home fries and last, but not least, a gratifying cheddar-filled omelette. Also, if you know anything about me or if you are still reading my reviews since the first one (thank you, thank you), you will know that the one thing that must always greet my taste buds before any meal is the most important part of any meal in the world: water. Since Montclair Diner is the best restaurant/diner in Montclair, you should also know that the water was on my table within a minute. Yes, one minute. As the water lubricated the nooks and crannies of my body like a new oil change for an engine, the food came out, within four minutes of the water delivery. To my surprise, the apple pancakes came with warm, caramelized apples sliced in between three large flapjack-like pancakes, almost like a burrito. Cinnamon was handed to me by the lovely waitress as she smiled, encouraging me to saturate my pancakes with the saddle brown spice. After the sugar, spice, and everything was added to the pancakes, I did a "wax on/wax off treatment" with my good ol' pal Land O' Lakes diner butter, right on the decorated pancakes. The wheat toast sat in between the pancakes and the omelette like a good boy, buttered up and ready for my attention. It wouldn't get it until the end of my meal, but more on that later. For now, the apple pancakes and cheddar omelette were at the center of attention. The apple pancakes excelled charmingly within my mouth. The omelette did as well. I felt a sense of care and adoration for the preparation of the omelette because of how the cheddar oozed out of the whisked, fried egg mixture. It didn't feel like Kraft's cheddar cheese singles. Fifteen minutes later, I was seeing stars. My stomach was full and the wheat hadn't been touched yet. The omelette was 90 percent finished, as well as the apple pancakes. I couldn't touch my eating utensils any longer. Just for the sake of respecting the wheat toast, I picked up a piece of the triangular-shaped grain and gave it the attention it needed, a nice, flower-shaped bite. I couldn't even finish the rest. I was defeated. Now, with three apple pancakes, two wheat toast pieces, and a full omelette, you would think the price would amount to $25, possibly $35 if you were in the city. Well, I received the tab and it was only $13. Amazon couldn't even beat that. With unbeatable prices and a family atmosphere too pleasing to pass on, if you don't get your behind to Montclair Diner right now, you are losing by the second. read more

I enjoyed the garlic Parmesan shrimp. Ordered it to go as a dinner for four. The pasta was cooked just right. And the amount of shrimp was really generous. Also on the plate is a hefty portion of hash browns. Not the oily kind that used to soak up remnants of your drunken college pub night hangovers. Delicious grown up health "conscious" kind that nicely complements your salty bacon. -Pastrami omelet is some kind of wonderful. No cheese, you gotta ask for that extra. I can imagine entire classes dedicated to the art of disco fries and the science of mozzarella sticks. An entire warehouse filled with red colored ketchup bottles which maintain the appearance of always looking full. They teach you how to list every single possible thing on the menu so that the average person breaks down and simply orders what he/she can think of off the top of their head. The owner (smaller, Italian guy) has been one of the best diner owners I've encountered -- always working and talking with the people, making jokes, telling stories; It's a rarity nowadays, but adds to the place's vibe. My wife and I Have been coming here (to this storefront) for way long, first in its original iteration as Louvis and then later under two other operators. The owners (the one we know best and who greets us when he's on duty is named "Gus," one of two possible Greek diner owner names, the other being "George.") are always pleasant and the owner's wives, who watch the $$, are always pleasant and ask how everything was. The food is unexciting, but servicable - and verging on the boring. If you go there for dinner, you will be offered a choice of the same four vegetables they have been offering for years, without change: carrots, broccoli, corn, and string beans. All boiled, all un-seasoned, all terrifically yawn-inducing. On the other hand, there is salt and pepper on the table. The burgers are OK but I've often been disappointed with absence on the menu of either Tournedos en Croute or poached Maine lobster with truffels and a coulis of ramps (on or off? they never said) and heirloom garlic. Anyway, it's a safe choice for a family drop-in meal. We have never been disappointed. On the other hand, we have realistic expectations. read more

I'm actually stunned at these reviews. I got the chicken finger "basket" which consisted of 3 chicken fingers on a plate and some fries. It cost $10.75. It's also hard to mess up chicken fingers but this place did it as they were really lousy. We were also rushed like never seen before because we got in at 8:20 and they apparently close at 9. I should've taken the fact that only one person was sitting in there as a sign that it was awful. While eating a guy also came up from outside, to the register to ask for a refund because his sandwich was "terrible." I'll never ever set foot here again and I strongly encourage you don't either. read more

Service was was poor at best. I have been to Montclair Diner on 2 previous occasions and was pleased. However, on trip 3 (today), service was subpar. My family and I (2 adults & 2 children) arrived and asked for a table for 4. Our number was taken and told a 15-20 min wait was to be expected. We waited for over 30 mins before I inquired about an update. The young hostess claimed she called us but there was no answer so we were passed. Turns out she wrote our number down incorrectly, I have had the number for over 10 years. I would not have incorrectly recited it. I corrected the number and she stated that she would seek out a table. Another 30 mins or so goes by and I check in again. The response was that too many people came in and the wait was longer. A well trained and attentive host would have called and at least offered an alternative setting to ensure that we were accommodated as the mistake was on her end. No. Party after party was seated with no attempt to seat us although we were there and waiting prior to other arrivals. We decided to leave and saw an empty table on the way. Despite all, we were still willing to stay and pay our money to eat. I asked,who seemed to be one of the owners or a manager, about the empty table and explained the situation. We were told that we couldn't be seated due to a busy kitchen. However, he would check on our wait anyway. However, just before the second check in a party of 5 was seated and while we waited for him to come back, a single patron was seated at the table that the table I inquired about and would have accommodated my family. We decided enough was enough because clearly service for all customers is not a priority, especially when the issue was due to the hostess' error. I will not be patronizing Montclair Diner again. I am upset that we waited over an hour for zero service and consideration. After leaving, I called to speak to a manager and was told that both owners were on site. The young man who answered phone placed me on hold and returned stating that I should leave my number for a call back. We all know that is code for, "I don't have time." Thank you but no thank you. Small diner nudged on a street that has a bunch of eateries. What makes this place stand out? That its a Montclair 'traditional' diner. Theres no real WOW factor but it is decent if you want breakfast at 3 o clock in the afternoon while your company rather have burgers. Food is okay, service is okay, and the stores appearance on the inside is okay. With all the eating places around it would be hard for me to step back into here without craving another store along the way read more

We were seated relatively quickly on a busy Sunday, and everything came pretty out pretty quickly which was nice. I had the Athenian wrap, which is basically described as a Greek salad with grilled chicken in a wrap. They toasted the wrap, which I appreciated, but it came falling apart. The filling wasn't really dressed, as expected for a Greek salad, and the chicken had too much char to it. Several pieces left an unpleasant burnt taste in my mouth, once to the point of not being edible. The side of home fries I had was decent, although a bit undeseasoned. The highlight of the meal was the chocolate egg cream, which I devoured.
