A very decent sandwich for the price point. Like most of the other reviews, the bread is not my favorite but they definitely make up for it with their meat. My sandwich was loaded with turkey - almost too much lol. Their fresh mozz is very good too, my only gripe is the red onions. I love white onion on my sandwiches and the red is just a bit too potent for me but still a great sandwich overall. Crew is friendly too. Drove 25 minutes to get there for 3pm. Girl behind counter, screams, "were closed!" She didnt explain anything, it was 3pm and their closing time was at 5pm. I told her I drove 25 minutes there, she just stared at me, while her friend just walked in. Him and her had weird looks on their faces. This is a little sandwich shop I came across. First timer and it was very good. The customer service is great. The gentleman that helped me was very nice and was more than willing to substitute certain meats on my sandwich. It is a small shop so more so of a grab and go. I'm a big fan of hero king. The heroes are a great size and they're always stuffed. However, the ratio of meat/cheese/toppings is always great. Sometimes places that "stuff" their sandwiches just do way too much meat. Hero King does just enough. I always do the pepper turkey and provolone and add banana peppers. Today, my husband did the roast beef with cheddar and horseradish-- the roast beef was phenomenal. Very tender and sliced thin. Staff is always super friendly. Street parking is a bit tricky but worth a little walk down the block. read more

Unfortunately that store has closed but the Nutley location has continued the tradition of making the best subs around! Great menu and prices. This is a nice little sandwich shop on Franklin Ave in Nutley. The service is friendly and boy, they know how to make a sandwich! The hot Italian sub (#4) is great, with lots of meat and cheese with just the right roll and consistency. And they have specials: The Hoboken (Wed & Sat) has hot roast beef, gravy, and fresh mozzarella. The Pink Pig (Mon & Tue) is a pulled pork and cheddar cheese sandwich. There are other special sandwiches available daily including a vegetarian option. Neither my wife nor I could finish more than half a sandwich, they are very large. Side salads are nice, we liked their potato and tortellini salads. This is on my list of places that I am willing to drive over 20 minutes to get to for the food. Highly recommended. read more

My second time ordering (via UE). Both times, I ordered the "Old Neighborhood" sandwich and both times, my proverbial socks were knocked off. I love that they have hot AND sweet peppers. Generous meats and made to order (life lettuce). And the bread itself is delicious. This sandwich is huge. I can only manage half for lunch and usually have the 2nd half for dinner. I'm excited to try their other sandwich options bc they all look delicious. Lastly, the delivery is super prompt and customer service is great. Once you walk in you are greeted immediately with a smile and such awesome service. First time here....well be prepared for all the wonderful suggestions they offer. All you see were the funkiest sandwich names that were nicely written on a big gigantic chalkboard. It's a small place but while you wait for your sandwich to be made....they have tons of autographed celebrity pics to your left to look at and explore other specialty sandwiches they carry for your next visit. Check out their soda fridge....lots of varieties to choose from which are made by them. Rae Lyn was nice enough for me to try their chocolate egg cream soda....I honestly thought I wasn't going to like it but she wasn't kidding when she said....if you like chocolate this won't disappoint you and she was on point. I also ordered the Larry David....hot pastrami (great amount of meat) with provolone cheese and their special hero king sauce...similar to thousand island dressing but had a nice kick to it. From the moment you walk in the door to your final nibbles of a masterpiece hero, you will feel like your dollars were wisely spent on a quality product from a great establishment. I found myself in the Nutley area at lunchtime and topped up the Yelp app on the phone. Thanks to fellow Yelpsters, this hero joint popped to the top of the list. Walking in the door, you'll notice how clean and organized the shop is. Even if the counter is busy, you'll be recognized and greeted by the owners. Again - even though it was my first time - they treated me like I was an old friend. Miss a menu chock full of so many incredible choices, I knew I had to settle on just one sandwich for the day. So I decided to indulge in the muscle right. The owner suggested "how about doing that one a hero, instead?" He was right and I gladly took the suggestion. Their breads are fresh and exhibit a nice crisp outside. I wish they had some tables and chairs to sit and enjoy a meal but my only option was to eat in the front seat of my car. No problem - the hero was so good that I was not bothered by the cramped eating space! WTF -do real people even really go to chains like Jersey Mike's, Subway and Firehouse?!?!?! Wow, I just finished wolfing down a 1/2 #4 Spicy Italian from these guys and gotta say, these guys know how to make sub! It was so good that I could have probably stopped eating half way through, but couldn't stop myself and ended up polishing the whole thing off. At this moment I feel the need to close my office door and take a nap, lol. Onto the details.... Very clean, the location is a tiny shop right on Franklin Ave in Nutley (the main street of downtown basically if you aren't familiar with the area). Street parking only as mentioned earlier as a tip so make sure you bring quarters. No table to eat/sit at, so take out only. As for the food, wow again! The sub itself was jam packed with fresh, thinly sliced meat that you can absolutely tell is quality cold cuts (I wish I didn't forget to ask what brand they used here, I'll have to ask the next time). And when I say jam packed, I mean it, they are not cheap with the portions. The bread they use is very fresh and of high quality. Shredded lettuce and thin sliced tomatoes topped off my sub with the right amount of oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, and mayo... To compliment my sub, I also picked up some of their potato salad, which I gotta say was pretty damn awesome as well! Last but not least - GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! I dont know whats happened to this place. I would make it a habit to go on a weekly basis because the sandwiches were so good. The place was managed by a couple - an older gentleman and a lady. However, for the past month or so, they seemed to have been replaced with young students. With the change, the sandwiches aren't being made like they once were. Each week, its gotten worse. Today i got a sandwhich that was made like my kid made it. Hardly anything. Im really disappointed and pretty much done with the place. First off, please let me assure Everybody, Especially Hero King, that we are Not competitors, we Do Not or have we ever owned a restaurant or been in the food service industry! Obviously our honest, truthful, trustworthy, legitimate, valid and correct review touched a nerve with them because they felt it necessary to respond with the Longest reply in their stores history! If fellow Yelpers take a minute to look at their multiple other 1, 2 or 3 star reviews, you will see what we are writing about. We have been eating at deli style restaurants for lunch in Brooklyn, NY; Manhattan and New Jersey for years, so we decided to give Hero King in Nutley, NJ, a local deli, a try. Hero King is a hole-in-the-wall takeout place, and they encourage you to pre-order over the phone. And after actually going there and ordering in person we know why. We did not choose ordering over the phone since it was our first, and unfortunately, happened to be the last time we went there. When we got to Hero King, there were three people behind the counter, and instead of making the process easier, they unbelievably and repeatedly confused each other in that the female order taker conveying the orders (incorrectly) to the TWO preparers. The Two guys were making 1 item at a time Between them (for some unknown reason) kept talking back and forth with each other about the ingredients And the order taker, Repeatedly misunderstanding each other! It was like an Albert and Costello routine but Not funny at all! We ordered one salad and one sandwich, some of the items we requested were out of stock and neither of our orders contained all of the items we requested, but were charged for anyway. In fact, some items we never asked for were put in the salad! When we presented our Restaurant.com certificate for payment, the cashier said, "No, we don't take that, we're not going to give you food for half price." There are no signs in the restaurant stating that they do not or did not accept the certificate, and they were still selling them on the Restaurant.com website at the time. The cashier was not exactly polite when she gave us this update, so it did not lend to what was already to be a time consuming, stressful experience. We were told by them that they would never get bad feedback or bad reviews because people loved their sandwiches. We guess that Hero King never supposed that competence, atmosphere, attitude and value, adds to the experience and people do not buy from people they do not like or trust. For what we received, a (barely) medium salad for about $8.25 and a small sandwich for about $10.00, Hero King is overpriced. Unfriendly, incompetent, disorganized and expensive, Hero King is a royal bummer to put it nicely and mildly. Get a Great sandwich instead at Harold's Deli in Lyndhurst, NJ; Brennan & Carr (Best roast beef Anywhere!) in Brooklyn, NY; Roll-N-Roaster in Brooklyn, NY and Katz's Delicatessen in Manhattan, just to name a few. read more
