They make the best sandwiches. Most places are cheap with the deli meat, and I am always amazed about how full I am after eating. Sadly, they are selling the business, but I will recommend trying it before they do. I'm honestly scared. It's gonna turn into something else.. (There's a pang of sadness when I see any of my old reviews that mention Clinton's iced teas. I guess I can find comfort that I drank entirely too many of them in my youth and even my own kids got to try them once or twice before the company went kaput.) Onward and upwards... it's now (almost) 2024 and while the the shelves are a bit more sparse than I recall and they got rid of their lottery machine (which seemed to bring in a lot of old-timers) - what I'm here for is their sandwiches. Specifically their #1 Italian. And I'm happy to report: they're still the best around. (And it tasted even better after a recent not-so-good visit to a Jersey Mike's in my hometown.) I've been living down the hill from Capelluti's for almost 8 years and have never been. Today I decided to walk over and see what they are about. From the very onset I was pleased. The place is kept immaculately clean, a great first impression. Got a Roast beef with provolone and their Italian sub with added hot peppers. Both were great, made to order on a good roll. The hot peppers actually have a kick to them, which I love! Glad to know there is a place I can walk to that actually makes good subs. This was my first time but definitely not the last. I was in the Newark area and was craving an Italian hero. Searched by rating and came across this spot. This was a little further away than I intended but I made the trek cause the craving was strong. When I got here, I was kind of surprised because it honestly looks like a old, run down bodega. Could these reviews have lied to me?? I was helped by an older gentleman who was kind enough to explain to me the menu. I guess They normally have regulars and I was someone he didn't recognize. I ordered the whole cappy Italian #1 and a small potato salad. The gentleman who manned the register wasn't as friendly as the gentleman who made the sandwich - actually he didn't even say a word aside from the price. It was about a 30 minute drive home for me but the sandwich held up well. Structurally, the bread was soft but had just enough crunch on the exterior for my liking. Meats were piled up and the sandwich was nicely stacked. Held up well while eating as well. I always try the potato salad whenever I grab a deli sandwich and WOW. The potato salad imo was literally perfect. It was exact flavor profile I was looking for - a little tangy and not drowned in mayo. What a perfect pairing with the sandwiches. I'm not in this area much, but Kearny seems to really have some hidden gems, this most definitely being one of them. I'm a sucker for people who do what they do well. Nothing, I mean nothing, can't beat a classic italian sub with capicola, ham, salami, and provolone cheese, served on a hoagie roll with lettuce, tomato, onion and oil and vinegar. This places does it perfectly! The bread is perfect too - soft on the inside with a little bit of crunch on the outside with a generous dose of the oil and red vinegar (which certainly ties it together). Prices are reasonable but I wouldn't recommend even a whole for 2 people as a half is plenty. They also have homemade salads as well for sides and a good selection of beverages and snacks. So with all the 5 star reviews you would think this place was legit, but it's just a corner bodega with a deli cooler and some meat slicers. This place absolutely stank of industrial cleaner, and that smell stuck to the sandwiches I got and was just very unpleasant. If you eat with all senses like me, this smell is going to be a problem. The sandwiches themselves were good. The bread here is GREAT. Also, the veg got shredded fresh to order, which is nice. Hands down one of our favorite sandwich places in Kearny. They have two basic menus, The American and The Italian. Our normal orders come off the Italian menu, basically all the sandwiches on this side have Fresh Mozzarella and Italian cold cuts. Every sandwich is made with the highest quality meats and cheeses (Boar's Head) and the best bread (Brother's Bakery rolls, I think). Also, they have a great selection of drinks and chips to complete your lunch time cravings. Cappelluti's Deli is the best deli in New Jersey! I travel all around the country and the world and I never have had a sub sandwich better than Cappelluti's. I've eaten in Michelin's Star restaurants that weren't as good as this deli. I mean I know it's a deli but WOW, amazing! Whenever I come home from abroad or across the country it's the first place I go for My fix. Fresh mozzarella cheese made by hand every day as well as daily fresh bread. Jim and Carol the owners are such nice hard working people who always have a smile and treat their customers top notch. A real old fashioned neighborhood deli where every kid know wants to go and very friendly atmosphere. Don't let the basic look fool you this is the greatest deli in New Jersey, probably New York too. Carnegie Deli In NYC has got nothing on Cappelluti's as far as quality, service, with great prices to top off. My nephew went to college in the Midwest and when my sister went to visit he would ask her to bring Cappelluti sandwich's on the plane back in the day. 100% the best all around! read more
