Before Jersey Mike's. Before Blimpie. Before Firehouse Subs. Before Subway. Before Jimmy John's. Before (okay, you get the idea)... there was Big Stash's. A (local) institution. Long before the likes of Subs Galore (a few blocks away) tried to rock the boat, Stash's was the only game in town (for a whole lotta years). I grew up two blocks away and I'm positive I put the original owner's kids through college with all the money I dropped here. After hearing new owners decided to keep the lights on I had to make an effort to get over here to show my support. Walking into the new Stash's... the place received a 'glow-up' (I'm entirely too old to be trying to use hip slang!) and loved that they decided to keep the framed Scott Baio picture (one of these days I'll share the 'deets' on that!). Surprised to see a few new menu additions (coffee?! Taylor ham?! Manhattan Special Espresso Soda?!) as well as being open more days and longer hours. For the sake of history I had to try their 'Belly Buster' and the kid handed me the sub in a box. ("Huh?! This is a weird gimmick.") But when I got home to open the box I understood 'why' - no wax paper and standard paper bag would've been able to hold this beast together. Just a ridiculous amount of (Thumann's) cold cuts and toppings that the (decent) bread tried in vain to keep together. "Bang for your buck" - you won't find a better deal. But for me it was TOO much and there's definitely an 'art' and a 'balance' to the ratio of meat to toppings to bread and Stash's is a bit TOO generous for my liking. One odd tidbit that brought me back to my youth and the old Stash's... that "stinky sub smell" that you just can't get off of your hands (and body) - no matter how many times you wash your hands, brush your teeth, take a shower, you name it. (Sadly it's Pavlovian for me to want/need a Clinton's iced tea when devouring a Stash's sub but that's no longer an option.) Newly renovated, but same exact sub locals have enjoyed for decades. Having grown up in the area, Big Stash's has been a local gem. You haven't had a sub until you've had a Big Stash's Belly buster. Absolutely love this place. Grew up in Kearny and left in 1984. It was always a staple, especially around Lent where we get the Egg and Pepper or Tuna subs. Favorite hands down is the ham, cheese and capicola, to die for in my opinion. Unfortunately, I live 3 hours away now, but rest assured, especially when the weather is nice, I will jump on the motorcycle and make that trip, just to get one of the subs. Last time I had a Big Stash's Sub was 1972 at Washington Jr High. It was delicious then, it's delicious now! This is the GOLD standard for submarine sandwiches. Here's another, phenomenal, hidden gem tucked away on the main drag in Kearny. Quick heads up.... Street parking only and CASH ONLY... Hit the ATM prior to going. Honestly, cost wise, there's no better deal. Half of a sandwich is approximately $8 and it's seriously a meal; and I can eat with the best of them. You can dine in or take out. The young man behind the counter was excellent. Very efficient and everything was perfect. I got a half of a belly buster, which is basically everything and my son got a turkey and provolone. The cheese steak with peppers and onions was delicious. The veggies were nicely fried and the sandwich wasn't too greasy like some dripping wet cheese steaks, but also wasn't dry. I'm actually mad at myself for living in Kearny my whole life and never going to Stash's. Such a hidden gem!! Tons of metered street parking right on the main avenue. It's definitely a little hole in the wall store but that's what makes it special. They've got a small menu of sandwiches but I'm sure you can ask for whatever you'd like and they'll accommodate. I went in, ordered my two sandwiches and I was out within 10 minutes. So quick and easy. You can also call ahead if you're in a huge rush, they definitely work quickly. My turkey and provolone was everything I wanted it to be and more. With all the works, including that delicious full fat mayo I never have. It was messy, flavorful and everything a good sandwich is. High quality meats and a generous amount of them too. Their prices are also incredibly reasonable. A half a sandwich is literally two servings - try them out! read more

I called this place and talked to the dude behind the counter. He said they were open "for 15 minutes", when their hours said they were open for another half hour. I it was right down the street, so I was there in 5 minutes and the joint was locked up, closed sign was on the door. Don't give jack wagons like these a dime. Huge sandwiches! Tuna sub was on the messy side, but oh so good. Really delish, even if I had to use a fork lol. I'd say maybe get the oil/vinegar on the side or just add it at home , especially if you think you'll have leftovers. The belly buster was fresh and tasty. That's all I've tried so far. It's a decent place to get a sandwich. If I'm in the neighborhood I definitely stop by to pick up lunch. The amount of food you get for the low price keeps me returning. The place has been here for as long as I remember. Employees usually are conversational and in good spirits. Been going to this spot for about a year now, it's a nice cozy spot with good quality subs. Most people would tell you to get the belly buster. My go to is always number 17, pastrami and turkey with Swiss cheese. Excellent sandwich, good in size too. They offer a few chip bags too which can always go good with one. Only real problem I can say is there are days where the bread can be a bit dry or stale tasting, but overall always in good quality. This place is also cash only, so that may trouble some people. I always get the half belly buster sub with hot peppers ( it's like a dollar up charge for hot peppers . they also have sweet pepper options for those who don't like hot). The subs come with lettuce tomatoes onion oil and vinegar. Their Ingredients are always super fresh , the bread, meats, lettuce and tomato and they put the right amount of oil and vinegar. I am a Jersey girl til the end of time so I know a good sub when I have one. This is a good sub. Granted it's no Tastees or White House (or my personal local fave Just Subs in Hillsborough) but it is good. Especially considering it's the 1st I've found in the area since I moved. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and the place was clean. It's a bit of a hole in the wall but I liked that quality.
