The Tiramisu latte was calling my name too. My son got the chocolate Freddo with coconut whip on top - both drinks were delicious The Taylor ham was packed with Taylor ham! Salty and savory which is what I wanted. Then a bite of the lava pancakes - the sweetness with the savory yummy. The pancakes tbh were okay. The pistachio sauce had a bit of after taste and the pancakes were off like they were crumbly and not soft and buttery fluffy taste. 4 & 1/2...Taylor Ham (or Pork Roll depending on which part of the Garden State a person hails from) must be an acquired taste. While I initially was repelled, I have subsequently converted to a full fledged fan over the course of the past few years of working quite a bit in NJ, and this wonderful establishment in the great urban town of Kearny has earned the crown for the best I've ever had of it. The gloriously gluttonous gut-busting "Johnny's Hangover Special" also qualifies for a spot high on my list of all time best breakfast sandwiches of any type, well worth a trip across the State line. The fat stack sandwich features relatively thick slices of the salty pork product layered between a fusion of delectable chunk of crispy savory fried potatoes melded with soft scrambled eggs and cheese, all seasoned and griddled to perfection stuffed inside a heavenly squishy and delicious Portuguese style roll. True to the name it would surely provide the salve you need to help you recover from the wildest of nights, as well as leave you thoroughly stuffed for most if not the rest of the day. Pro tip; accompany the life-changing sandwich with one of the wonderful, unique and delicious specialty coffee drinks that will delight your social media feeds followers as much as your tastebuds with their eye popping presentations. With that being said, I had to stop by and try it out after the Grand re-opening on 11/25/24. There was plenty of street parking (not always the case) so it was a quick trip. This is a no frills, hole in the wall, family owned establishment. It is very small and usually crowded with locals. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted and provided with a menu. I order the THEC to go and let's just say it did not disappoint. The sandwich was very generously put together, eggs was perfectly cooked, Taylor ham wasn't too salty, cheese was perfectly melted and the bread was fluffy. Their menu is simple but just reading it shows that they have a lot of fundamental diner items. Finally had the chance to stumble on in to The Greeks in Kearny, NJ today for what some people consider the best Jersey Meat/Egg/Cheese in the state!! I don't care to argue over the name of it. Call it pork roll, call it Taylor ham, call it your aunt sally...I say Jersey Meat to avoid the argument. Stopped in to grab a THEC after seeing it featured on Instagram. I never knew this place existed. WOW!! is all I can say. The THEC was EXACTLY what was touted. It was FANTASTIC. Being a transplanted Northerner I don't often get a chance to try local NJ legends, but on this Xmas trip to NY/NJ I finally got to the Greeks, and boy I am glad I did.On the way up I stopped in and had the NJ special, taylor ham, egg and cheese between 2 pieces of french toast, one word to describe it : awesome !!!! In the words of my boyfriend... "the best Taylor ham egg and cheese ever". Since I'm not a fan of Taylor ham, I know I know, I leave the reviewing to my boyfriend on that one. Trust me, he's a Taylor ham fan. He really said it was perfect, just the right ratio of ingredients and greasy Jersey meat to make a breakfast sandwich perfect. I went with the western omelette and it was truly enough for 4 meals. So much food. The home fries were great, overcooked but in the best way possible. Delicious eggs, loaded with toppings. We also got a side of elm street fries, again enough for 4 people. Tasty seasoned fries, chili, a ton of cheese, all topped with raw onion. They give you the option of cooked onion as well, I think both would work to be honest. Be aware, this place gets crazy busy. I called on a Saturday morning for pickup and the wait was an hour. Love this place! The food is delicious and the portions are generous. If you don't see something on the menu that you want, they will figure out a way to make what you want. Above all else, the service is amazing. The owner is such a friendly, personable, young man. He is so down to earth. It almost feels like he is inviting you into his home to dine with his family. Love that guy! They really go above and beyond what any other restaurant would offer to make sure you are full and satisfied when you leave. This is my second time here and it just baffles me how these guys are the only ones that can get this down to a perfect science. Weighed about as much as my car's spare tire and had the flavor to back it up. My wife went with the normal Taylor ham, egg and cheese on a hard roll. Best TEC this side of the Mason Dixon Line. After a decade it's time to freshen up my original review. Having grown up in Kearny I've been coming here forever. John (owner) is one of the coolest and most genuine people you'll ever meet and if he ever decided to give up manning the flat top grill to go into politics he could be the mayor of any of the local towns in a landslide election (and that's no hyperbole). The Greeks is a small joint, hidden away on a side street in Kearny (although it's always packed) so it took some time for the rest of the state to catch up and the last few years you'd see The Greeks make various 'Best Of' lists - which they definitely earned and deserved. Their Taylor hand sandwich? Dynamite. Give it to me plain, on a roll. (The rest of you can get fussy with eggs and cheese and extra salt and pepper and ketchup and all that nonsense.) The home fries? Best in the state. (The Mad Batter all the way down at Exit 0 could give them a run for their money though.) The Mrs. is cuckoo for omelets and specifically their Greek omelet is her absolute fave ever (and she's tried them all over, trust me). And my kids are big fans of their pancakes. Coffee - legit. Pricing - solid. Staff - always extremely cool. (And don't sleep on their lunch menu... lots of homemade soups and one of the best chicken gyros I've ever had - and I've had more than my fair share over the years.) This place is recently under new ownership and this family knows what they are doing! The home fries are the best I've had in a long time and they have some amazing menu choices! My son had the London broil and eggs special today and I had a breakfast sandwich. Both were delicious. Home fries tips: get it crispy but not extra crispy, and "Greek style" with feta The French toast is amazing Pricing is more than fair for the portions. It's great how they know their regulars. Cash only. Another pro tip: you and your clothes will smell like the diner when you come here since the grill is right out in the open so wear clothes you don't care about when you come here. Full disclosure - each time my husband and I come here we are the only minorities and get stared at by the customers - but the owner and waitress don't treat us any differently. Ok so I finally tried it and I gotta say this is The Best Taylor Ham Egg and Cheese in Jersey. Plenty of meat layered in the perfect manner. The home fries look burnt and terrible but actually aren't they have a good flavor. Still had to wait 35 minutes for it to be made (which isn't ideal for breakfast to go) but this time we called ahead so wait wasn't as bad. Also they Do Not wear masks. Was in NJ last month visiting as I grew up in Newark not far from where "The Greeks" have their location in Kearny. Reading a variety of publications and #2 Taylor Ham Egg & Cheese sandwich in the state was at "The Greeks" so off we went as #1 was closed on Monday's. Parking on the street (Metered) was easy to find as we head in to the his small NJ type diner with Social Distanced seating. Lucky to score a table in the back more on that later. Greeted by our server and John the owner is behind the counter making everything. Place is a throwback where everyone knows everyone god I miss that feel of home sometimes. From local 1st responders to local regulars than there are regulars who we conversed with who traveled 15 - 20 miles just to have breakfast as they grew up here and still come back. OK On to the food. I had the Taylor Ham egg cheese sandwich and there are THEC sandwiches and then there is Johns. WOW piled high with Taylor ham but layered properly with two eggs and a abundance of cheese. Roll was soft and fresh. We also had an order of hashbrowns / homefries that were delicious. I watched as everything from pancakes, French Toast, and lunch items like the burger that looked outrageous go by. John kept the banter up while diners came and went. Apparently we were sitting in a regulars table and the look was classic like WTF are you doing in my seat LOL. We are both vaccinated so we asked him to join us so he could be next to his friends and the smile was worth price of breakfast. I had such high expectations, and The Greeks didn't live up to them. My experience makes me wonder who is reviewing this place. The service was slow, and the food was underwhelming. I ordered a Greek salad with chicken. The chicken tasted exactly like that prepackaged chicken garbage. It had a bad taste and was bland. The dressing needed a lot more vinegar, lemon, or something else. It tasted as though there was just pretty much oil on the salad. There also wasn't enough feta cheese. My sister ordered traditional eggs, bacon, home fries, etc. She said her meal was fine...just fine. There was nothing special about it. Nothing was so awful that it deserves two stars. Although service was slow, it was still friendly. Although the food wasn't great, it wasn't so disgusting that I wanted to find a garbage can to spit it out. On a positive note, I thought their rolls of paper that patrons could write or draw on was a really nice touch. I'm glad I tried the place, though I won't be back. The service is fast and personable. It's worth a long drive to experience the Greeks. As I edit this review of the Greeks As I eat the last bites of a masterful Western omelette, the owner and chef John just told me Princess Leia died, rest in peace sweet princess Carrie Fisher. If you're a fan of home cooked food, and feeling the love of a family run business, don't hesitate, stop your search, this is the Holy Grail of coffee, eggs, home fries, pancakes, and all grill fare. This is my favorite diner in the area. Family owned for over fifty years with the family running it on a daily basis. This diner is small and cozy, you self seat, and it's cash only. Very old school which I love. They make these great sandwiches and real homemade soups that always hits the spot. Very affordable also. Every time I come in I wanna try something new and it's never a disappointment. The owner John is very friendly to all of his customers even being behind the grill constantly.
