Chicken Cutlet salad, with fresh mozzarella and peppers... Yummy!!
    Scott D.

Ok, so... Ever since working in the gorgeous cities of Newark and Elizabeth, I've been privy to some eateries that I would never have the opportunity to visit. Today, I was brought to Café Italia. Wow.. What a little gem! When you walk in, it looks run down. They don't have any new fangled menu boards, no bright lights, nothing fancy... Absolutely nothing new about this place. But what it does have is incredible food. All homemade and Gigantic portions!. All served by little old Italian ladies with love! If you want it, they can make it for you. I was recommended the Chicken Cutlet salad, which came with fresh Mozzarella, sweet and hot peppers, olives, tomatoes, lettuce, and onions - dabble some homemade Balsamic dressing on that bad boy and you have one incredible salad! My mouth is watering right now just typing this! I saw others tearing into chicken cutlet parm sammaches, sausage and peppers, penne w/ Vodka Sauce, Cheesesteaks, Veal, OMG, you name it, it's here.. hot and cold treats! We got there about 11:15 and it quickly filled up. They have about 10 or so tables inside. Hell, even Newark's finest stopped in for lunch, so if the Po-Po come here, it MUST be some good eats!!! So, why 5 stars? Well, places like this are slowly going away. Long gone are the days of the small restaurants like this - that you can get incredible homemade food as good as this place. Great prices, you feel at home here. I live in Pequannock, so I'll never just hop in my car and come here for lunch - it's just too far.. But rest assure, if there's a lunch run and this place is mentioned, I'll be first in line to go. I don't think the picture gave justice on just how big of a salad that was, but it was chock full of chicken and garden goodies... That and a bottle water, yea only $8.00 bucks. If you're ever in the area, and want some authentic Italian food, do yourself and your taste buds a favor, and stop in. **Cash Money Only Homey!" Highly Recommended!!!

Open during covid for takeout and limited outdoor seating. Same great homemade Italian food.

Came here for lunch and had the eggplant parm with spaghetti and it was delicious! This is an old school Italian hole in the wall with authentic Italian/American specialties! The 4 Nona's Cooking and preparing the food in the back made me think of my childhood! The meatballs are honestly as good as my mother-in-law's! Great place with great prices!!!

    Penne Vodka sauce special. Excellent.

Great lunch spot in Newark. Stop in for lunch and you'll see Port Authority workers, Newark PD/FD, Essex County Sheriff's, United Airlines workers, locals, etc. Place is like eating lunch or dinner at grandma's house. Everything is scratch made, fresh and excellent. Prices cheap. Check this place out.

Cheap, fast and tasty. The staff was on their phone most of the time and not so personable. However, it may just be the North East!

"You won't want to cook anymore" he tells us a bit later. He's not wrong. I had the fish special, cod, served puttanesca, with mash potatoes and spinach. He had the rigatoni bolognese. Perfectly cooked pasta. "Everything is homemade," Angelo explained later. Smart and fairly well-priced wine list. We asked why the 2020 Carparzo Brunello di Montalcino was so low priced, and learned the wine has been priced the same since their father closed their Upper East Side location and the kids opened in Newark. "New York food at NJ prices," Angelo explained. "I've never had tiramisu I've liked better", husband told me. "I've never had flan Ive liked better" I told him. (It is coconut flan.) Great service. Wonderful spot. And Bon Jovi has been in twice, most recently he brought his wife. Enough said.

If you loved Moonstruck or Godfather movies, this is your place. Theres a long bar with high seats, small tables, and old school booths so you have great choice of seating. We were seated at a table and instantly impressed by the friendliness of the waiter and visit from the pwner. The menu is classic Italian food (no pizza). They bring out a plate of bruschetta on crostini bread which was fresh and delicious. For food, we had Veal piccata and Chicken Francese. My son had Pasta bolognese. Definitely prefer the chicken over the veal, and my son ate his whole,e bowl ao Id say the bolognese is really good too. Veal was just a little tough but the sauce was totally on point, saved the meal. We will absolutely come back to try more dishes. Homemade pasta will def be next visit. Excellent ambience and great friendly staff. Love it.

The food is probably the closest you can get to actual Spanish tapas but what i love most about this place is that everythings got flavorrrrr For our table of 4 we got CROQUETAS with their house cured chorizo- very good POLLO FIORENTINA- chicken was so tender and packeddd with flavor! BARRIGUITA- plentiful serving for a tapa, we loved the potatoes it came with too CHICHARRON DE POLLO- flavorful chicken and easier to eat than you think TARTAR- delish but small Chipirones- sooo delicately breaded you can barely tell, was great COSTILLA A LA PLANCHA- plentiful for a tapa, we recommend cooking for longer since its traditionally a tough cut of beef SAUTED VEGETABLES- tastey and not mushy thankfully! MILLIONAIRE CAIPIRINHA for my drink. was soooo good, not too sweet and not quite as sour as a margarita, was perfect for me!

When I was there, they had a DJ playing, and it added energy without being too loud or overwhelming. The Service was very good, the waiter answered and helped with all our questions. The food was absolutely amazing really flavorful and well done. Just be a little prepared that most dishes come in smaller portions. But the quality definitely makes up for it. I ordered the paella, and it's easily enough for two or even three people and it was well worth it. Really delicious. The drinks were also definitely worth trying while you're there. The only thing I wasn't big on was the desserts they didn't quite live up to the rest of the meal. But overall, great atmosphere, excellent food, and a fun experience. I'd definitely come back.

Girls' night rule #1: pick a place with a vibe. Girls' night…read morerule #2: the food better back it up. Burke's Tavern understood the assignment. None of us had been before, so we walked in blind, except not really, because the second we stepped inside the vibe hit us. Dimmed lights (but not "can't read the menu" dim), candles glowing, plants everywhere, music just loud enough to feel cool but not loud enough to ruin the gossip. Cozy. Chill. Cute. The holy trinity. It wasn't packed, so we had seating options and landed at a round table in the middle: elite positioning, honestly. Door and front windows on one side, bar view on the other. Prime people-watching real estate. Now let's discuss the important part: the food. We ordered strategically (read: everything we wanted). Lamb meatballs - 10/10. Holy crap. I don't know who is back there doing what, but please continue. Burrata pizza - absolutely delicious. Gone in record time. Gochu-Crispy-Chikin - no notes. Million Dollar Chicken - appropriately named. Fish 'N' Chips - zero complaints across the table. And that's the thing: not a single person in the group had an issue. No side-eye. No "it's good, but..." Just clean plates and happy energy. Now. Parking? Disrespectful. It's on a corner (love that), but finding parking took effort (do not love that). Would I let that stop me? Absolutely not. Parking be damned. I will circle. I will walk. I will manifest a spot. Because this place is such a vibe that it's already secured a return visit -- brunch is calling, and I need to see what this place feels like when the weather warms up. Girls' night/date night/ANY night approved.

The atmosphere and restaurant look great. It has a good vibe and the service was great. I'm not sure about the rest of the menu, but not a burger place. Now the chocolate cake with the raspberry ice cream--wow! This was the best part of the meal. I'm giving this place 4 stars even though I didn't like the burger because that's all I tried. I'll come back and revise this rating up/down if I come back and try other menu items.
