I cannot say enough good things about Cafe Airlie. Their food and service is phenomenal. I used to work not too far from here, and my team had Cafe Airlie in our regular rotation. I would email their business email my team's order, call to confirm, and then head over to pick up the food. The staff is extremely patient. My colleague and I had to verify each item we ordered was in our orders when we picked up our food. We held up the line every time. The establishment was typically very busy when we went to pick up the orders, and although stressed, the two staff members on shift helped us verify item by item that everything was there. Their sandwiches were good, as well as their salads and soups. Prices are fairly reasonable. Would definitely return when in the area next! read more

I can't speak to the ambiance because I have only gotten delivery from here. But the sandwiches are A plus. This is my new favorite sandwich shop in the city. All the sandwiches are served in large portions and are full of substantial fillings. You won't leave hungry. I've had the Sweet Lou which is breaded chicken cutlet with onions and sweet peppers and mozzarella on a roll with honey mustard. And their pastrami and corned beef sandwich on rye with Russian dressing and coleslaw. Both incredibly delicious sandwiches. Have them with potato chips and peach tea Snapple and you're good to go. This spot has been on my radar for a while and happy I got to try it. I called in my order of the Sweet Lou with a nice guy that answered. When I arrived I couldn't find parking. Parking in this area is terrible so be prepared. When I walked in the man said my name and gave me my food and it came to about $10. I paid via credit card and left. My boyfriend had brought me a tuna sandwich from here and I was amazed at the flavor and I could not help but do a drop by a few days later to see what this magical place in the downtown area was all about. Airlie has amazing sandwiches. Fresh bread, fresh cheeses, all delicious. My go-to sandwich is the mambo italiano, which is an italian sub with hot peppers. They also have customizable salads and plenty of hot sandwich options that taste great! The big knock on Airlie is a downside of their success, the place is mobbed at lunchtime. If you try to walk in here for a sandwich at lunchtime, expect a 20 minute wait and no place to sit. Sometimes you can get lucky and snag a table, but with the packed house it isn't exactly a zen garden. So while I encourage everyone to try Airlie, I also advise that you to call ahead before you get stuck staring at the sandwiches being made for 30 minutes. read more

However, since moving to NJ it has been almost impossible to find a good hero sandwich. This place is amazingly good! I was finally able to visit since I was off of work (they close by the time I get home). The staff was friendly and realized I was a newbie so they explained my different bread choices. I opted for turkey, salami, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and onions on a hero. The sandwich was huge. Well worth the money. My total was $11 and change. I was literally blown into Café Airlie last week by the blustering winds of late March. It gave me shelter and a very good breakfast. The space is bright, yellow, and very efficient. The time from ordering to pick up was the time it took to go down the long flight of stairs to the restrooms in the basement and to come up again. I was impressed. The Sausage, Egg and Cheese on Kaiser sandwich was neatly wrapped and sliced open to be able to pick up each half in its wrapper without removing it to eat the meal. So easily done, yet so clever. The taste was as good as the presentation - enjoyable as I sat at a window table watching the Mariah wind knock over signs and liberate files from the firm grasp of their owners. Even dogs were howling. Best of all for me, it was around the corner and up the street from the Newark Club where I was attending a day long seminar, and a perfect place to wait until the doors opened just before 9. I've been to Cafe Airlee a couple of times for lunch. They have great sandwiches at a good price. I ordered the Italian sandwich on a roll (about 6") on my first visit and was full after eating the first half. They really fill it with a large amount of meat, thick slices of provolone, sliced lettuce and a nice portion of hot peppers! Its a great sandwich. I have also ordered the Italian on a Hero (footlong) and it costs $1 more. The sandwich is huge! I ended up having them cut it in half and wrapped the halves separately. I ate the second half for dinner that night. Yum! They have a large selection of drinks and chips to choose from, plenty of seating and friendly service. I think you can order fir pick up as well. The line gets pretty long sometimes and I heard the guy taking orders say that it would take about 15 minutes for the person's sandwich to be ready. Yikes! I ordered a pastrami on rye with lettuce, tomatoes and mustard. My coworker ordered just pastrami on rye. They do not have pickles. Prices were reasonable. When I got to my office and opened my sandwich, I was disappointed with what I saw. Grease! The wrapping was soaked in grease. The bread was dark and mushy with grease, and the grease was oozing out of the sandwich. The bread on the side of my sandwich that had the lettuce was still normal looking rye, because the lettuce was a type of barrier. My coworker had the same issue with her sandwich. Grease oozing out of the sandwich and soaking the bread! Since we were hungry, she and I tried to blot the grease with paper towels so we could at least eat the pastrami. That didn't work because, not only was it greasy, it was entirely too salty! My coworker said she loves salt, but it was way too salty even for her. This lunch was inedible for both of us! I've also tried the number three which consists of roast beef and peppers, and that is also very satisfying. I always want to try new stuff here but I can't stay away from the #9. What is my life. With the hero, the cost is around $8, but on a regular roll it's about $7. Very well worth it. I've also ordered the breakfast plate - eggs any style, bacon or sausage, home fries, and toast. One of my favorite lunch places in Newark. It usually gets pretty crowded so definitely call ahead if you can. I've tried several of the sandwiches and I've never been disappointed. My favorites are Sweet City, #9 (Sweet Lou) and #11 Teriyaki Style.
