I've had me some soul food in Mississippi and 'Bama, though at a fraction of the price you get up North. Look, it's a Montclair thing. Pluses: Black owned restaurant serving cultural staples, plus foods for people who don't want Southern. Ambiance featured soul music, and at one point was playing Shaft! I can dig it. You're not left wanting for food quantity or quality. Plenty of shrimp in the grits, for example. Server was very pleasant to talk to with a little Southern twang to her voice. Why not five stars: Flavor needs deepening. For example, in the South I'm used to seeing okra chopped and breaded before being fried. Maybe more oily that way, more carbs... but more flavor as a result. I had the pulled chicken mac, which was a bit smaller of a dish overall (a bit intentional on my part) - and while the cheese flavors run deep, the meat did not. Shrimp and grits, I took a quick sample of my friend's grits and... I bet you can guess my finding there. Still, a very nice change from the usual Northern selection of foods. I would not hesitate to say Sweet T's is authentic and a nice visit if you're in town. You'll be paying a pretty penny wherever you eat, so you can tag this one on your list. read more

We arrived with a party of four to celebrate my son's birthday, he chose this restaurant, and it was a great choice. The atmosphere and décor were inviting, with plenty of space and no long wait. The staff was friendly, and our server Najada J., was prompt and attentive throughout the meal. Smooth R&B music set the tone perfectly. We started with Saratoga sparkling water, cornbread with strawberry butter, and Sweet T's fried shrimp. The cornbread was good, not overly sweet, which I appreciated. The fried shrimp, however, was a standout; flaky, perfectly seasoned breading, and a side condiment with a spicy kick, similar to a mayo-ketchup blend, that complemented the shrimp and catfish beautifully. Now for the main event: my three-piece fried chicken (breast, wing, and thigh). Cooked to perfection, moist on the inside, crispy on the outside, and seasoned far beyond the ordinary. Truly "finger-licking good." I was also lucky enough that those at my table shared some of their catfish, WOW, I'm sold. I visited Sweet T's in Montclair, NJ today with my family for Mother's Day dinner, and I honestly left feeling embarrassed, disappointed, and ashamed of how everything was handled. From the moment we arrived, I informed the host that I had a reservation for four, although the system showed two. I explained the situation multiple times and showed my confirmation on my phone, but it felt like we were not being properly acknowledged or taken seriously. We were asked to wait while they tried to resolve the issue, and during that time my pregnant wife and two excited children were left standing in a crowded area, clearly uncomfortable and confused. The communication throughout the entire process was inconsistent and frustrating. We were first told we may be seated, only to later be told we could not be accommodated at all. At the front desk, there was a female staff member who appeared to be frequently on her device during the interaction, which added to the lack of professionalism and organization at the front. The most unprofessional part of the experience was dealing with a staff member named Markinson Johnson, who was directly involved in handling the situation. His approach and communication only escalated the frustration and confusion. He eventually handed me his card due to the tension during the interaction. There was also another gentleman involved whose name I was not provided, but his approach during the situation felt more professional in comparison, as he attempted to de-escalate things by speaking with me privately outside the restaurant. I do appreciate that effort, but even after that, we were brought back in and again told we would be seated, only to later be told there was no table available for us at all. What made this experience especially embarrassing was the amount of time my family was left standing in front of other guests, going back and forth between staff members, only to ultimately be turned away after being given mixed messages. For what was supposed to be a special Mother's Day dinner, the entire experience left me feeling disrespected as a guest and truly embarrassed in front of my own family. I don't eat southern food too often, but was looking for food in the area and saw this place had many reviews, so wanted to give it a try. I forgot the name of our waiter, but he was the best! So kind and warm and just a pleasant waiter who did his job well and was very thoughtful to our questions/requests. The cornbread with the fruit butter was delicious! If I could give this place 10 stars, I absolutely would. My date and I visited here on a Sunday afternoon around 2 PM without a reservation and were able to be seated immediately. From the moment that I walked into the restaurant, I knew that everything would turn out well because the smell of the food wafted into my nose and already had me drooling. The decor was absolutely stunning and was giving Harlem vibes with the artwork and the blue and gold accents. I love the black chandeliers. The service was great throughout and gratuity is included, which is well deserved. Unfortunately, the place does not serve alcoholic beverages, but they do have wine and sangria. I ordered the raspberry sangria and it was strong and delicious! My date ordered the peach wine and enjoyed it as well. The cornbread was amazing and to my surprise it came with strawberry butter, which should be packaged and sold in supermarkets everywhere because it's soo good. Very cute spot with lovely service. Right across from the concert venue downtown. Everything is drenched in gravy here, very delicious gravy at that. I would recommend the smoked turkey. Fell off the bone! The fried chicken gets soggy with the gravy, so maybe better off asking for it on the side. Best cheesy grits I've ever had. Collared greens pretty good but not life changing (I've had life changing ones believe it or not). The stuffing came in a ball and essentially tasted like a less sweet cornbread. They do sweet tea flights. I tried 4, but none blew me away. I'd say peach was best (not overly sweet and most black tea forward). I hear they have great pies, but did not try. Visit Date: Veterans Day (to celebrate my husband, a Veteran) My husband and I visited Sweet T Southern Eatery today to celebrate him for Veterans Day. We had tried coming here once before but couldn't get in due to their strict reservation policy, so this time we made sure to book ahead. To our surprise, the restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived, which allowed us to really enjoy the atmosphere and take in the beautiful art and décor. The space itself is lovely--very clean, vibrant, and thoughtfully decorated. I will say, though, dimming the lights a bit could make it feel more intimate and cozy. The lighting was a little too bright and fluorescent for my taste. Still, I give the ambiance and décor a solid 5 out of 5 Drinks I started with the raspberry sangria while my husband ordered the white sangria. Our server, Monet, asked which I preferred, and when I mentioned liking the white better, she switched it out for me at no extra charge. That level of attentiveness really impressed me! The sangria was delicious -- so much so that we ordered a carafe. The only downside? The carafe was $50, which felt a bit steep for the size and don't expect to fill a buzz. The catfish and grits were pretty good especially if you like cheesy grits. Surprisedly I liked the devil eggs and I'm not a devil eggs person at all but they were actually pretty good. The Sweet T's Fried Shrimp with their tartar sauce was also delicious and I enjoyed that. My mother got the Sweet T's 1Lb Texas Braised Beef Short Rib but she wasn't a big fan of it. I think it was a bit too much meat for her. So if you aren't a big meat eater I would say stay away from that because it is a big piece of meat. Overall the portions are fair and filling. We made a reservation but it wasn't too busy for a Friday and we able to be seated immediately. Our server was fantastic as he was efficient and able to recommend us the entire menu as it was our first time dining here. The cornbread that is brought out for the table is delicious and has a nice buttery outer layer crunch. It is served with strawberry butter that is beyond delicious! I ordered the short rib Mac and cheese with fried potato wedges. It was perfect as a grilled cheese the crunch to cheese and meat ratio was just right. The potato wedges were huge and delicious. My boyfriend ordered the 1LB platter of beef short rib with Mac n cheese and a side salad it was enormous and a great portion for the price. My sweet tea was the right amount of sweet. We ordered a sweet potato pie to go because we were so stuff and had leftovers. The pie was phenomenal and I added a bit of homemade whipped cream to it. We waited over 15 minutes just to receive our drinks, and there were only five people dining in the restaurant at the time. After finally placing our order, the waffle arrived cold and had to be sent back. The cornbread was also cold and bland, as were the chicken and the mac and cheese. Throughout the meal, our server never came back to check on us or ask if we needed anything. When we asked to speak with a manager, the server told us the owner was present and said she would have her come over. Instead, we were told the owner was on a call and that we should email her because she "already knew what the problem was." That response was frustrating, considering she never spoke to us at all. She walked past our table several times and could clearly see the untouched, unpleasant food but never acknowledged or greeted us. Ordered yams for a Friendsgiving because I needed enough for 40 people. When I tell you that I haven't tasted yams - even the ones that I make - that were this close to what my mother made, believe me. I don't know why I didn't take a picture of them, they were almost overflowing the 1/2 pans. My sister and I went there for dinner. The atmosphere was very nice. Plenty of space and nice decor, music enhanced the ambiance, just loud enough to vibe but not interfere with conversations. While the food turned out to be delicious I was pleasantly surprised because the menu seemed all over the place. I don't normally come to a restaurant for dinner to order a bbq sandwich or chicken and waffles. For instance my sister ordered smothered chicken and you would think either rice or mashed potatoes would be a perfect side dish but there were only fries or sweet potatoes. I reluctantly ordered catfish ( not a fan but it was all that I found interesting) it was very well seasoned, crispy and came out hot and fresh!! The black eyed peas were also very flavorful. My sisters chicken was not done to her liking and so she returned it without any issues and replaced it with the catfish and it also came out fresh and flavorful. All in all the food was great. I just feel like the menu needs some tweaking to compliment each other more. read more
