There's home-cooked style soul food, and then there's cafeteria-style soul food. If you really grew up on soul food, you know exactly what I mean. Cornbread falls into that cafeteria-style category for me. We went on a Friday night and the restaurant was completely empty. I ordered the three-piece fried chicken with potato salad and cabbage. My friend had the oxtail with yams and collard greens. The fried chicken was flavorful and tasty, though I could tell it wasn't freshly fried--barely warm and not crispy, again, cafeteria style. The potato salad was really good and probably the highlight of my meal. The cabbage, however, had more onions and peppers than cabbage, which wasn't great. The cornbread itself was delicious but barely warm. I imagine it's really good straight out of the oven, but that's not what we were served. My friend did enjoy the oxtail. The collard greens were sweet but still good, and the yams were pretty decent. We ordered a peach cobbler to go because it sounded good, but once I got home it was very disappointing. The dough was barely cooked, and I could still see flour. If I had eaten it at the restaurant, I definitely would've sent it back. Service was great. The staff was friendly, we ordered at the counter, and they brought the food to our table. The space is small but has just enough seating. We were lucky to find on-street parking since we went late on a Friday night. They accept cash and all major credit cards. One small note: there are no bottled hot sauces, just small no-name packets, which weren't the best. We also had the sweet tea, which had a strange flavor--possibly honey--but it wasn't what I expected and I was no where near impressed. If you're expecting southern sweet tea, that's not what they have here. Pricing felt a little high for what's offered. Two dinners, two iced teas, and a very small peach cobbler to go cost us almost $70! Overall, decent food and friendly service, but for the price, I expected more of that true home-cooked soul food experience.
You need to go support this business! Nicest folk working here, making delicious cornbread and simple, traditional comfort food. They have baked and fried meal options and their signature cornbread can be purchased by itself, though it does come with every meal. Came here in a cold day and brought my hunger-- the PERFECT combination! Small, casual, clean space. Sweetest woman (Michelle) working the counter. You will not be disappointed.
Food (2.5/5): Unfortunately disappointed by the food. Fried Chicken and Fish was not very flavorful or spicy on its own. Mac & Cheese was very greasy. Not bad but did not meet expectations. The exception is the namesake cornbread. Will be coming back for some cornbread and then getting chicken from Popeyes... (sorry). Service (4/5): Although very friendly, the food got mixed up at first, then we were missing a piece of chicken, then we had to ask for utensils. These on their own are all harmless, but altogether just felt like a bit of a mess. Ambiance (5/5): Love the decor.
When I walked in, no one paid us any mind for approximately 10 minutes and that made me think I wasn't going to like the establishment. The tables were also dirty from previous people. Maybe they were busy because it was Juneteenth weekend. However, after being addressed, they were super nice and the food was SOO good. Like really really good!
A delicious hidden gem! It's easy to get caught up in all the good food of Montclair but for southern comfort, this is your spot! We got the 3 piece and 2 side which was more than enough food. Mac & cheese was a must, collard green were delicious, yams tasted like Thanksgiving! Chicken had a thin layer of crispy breading which was perfect and so flavorful. We also got the Uptown tea which was their mix of homemade sweet tea and lemonade, so good. But the star of the show is the cornbread. It absolutely did not disappoint. Simona took our orders and she was just the sweetest. They are also open every day of the year including holidays!
Parking is very hard in this area. But it was worth it. The food did take a bit long to receive but once we did we were happy. The food was well seasoned and flavorful. The server could have been more friendly and inviting.
I walked into Cornbread Farm to Soul on a busy day, so there was a little wait, but it was worth it. I could tell by watching the plates that they were bringing out to the tables that I was in for a treat. The fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and yellow rice were amazing. I've never been the biggest collard green fan but felt compelled to try it here and it was pretty good. I'm pretty sure that the cornbread here is the best cornbread I've had in my life! Lastly, I messed up by only getting a tiny sample of their peach cobbler, next time I'm there I'll get the biggest size they have!
Stopped here to catch up with some old friends. The food was really good. The cornbread was absolutely delicious. I wasn't a fan of the sweet tea though. The service was excellent. We ordered at the counter and they brought the food to us. The ambiance is casual and it's a great space for groups. I would definitely come back and I would recommend it to others.
Traveling for work can sometimes grueling. Thank goodness for places like Cornbread to satisfy my cravings. Upon entering this little restaurant location in Montclair, NJ, I was immediately greeted with some friendly smiles and warm Southern hospitality. The place had a line that was several deep around dinner time. It was worth the wait. I decided to go with the three-piece fried chicken and cornbread. First of all, the cornbread was out of this world! Sweet, delicate, and perfectly prepared. Soft and delicious and an absolute star. So dangerous, in fact, that the lovely lady running the place served me up another slice on her because the outer crust was a bit torn off from the bottom of the hot pan it was prepared in. She didn't want to serve it to a new customer, but I gladly indulged myself in a second slice. The fried chicken was amazing. Absolutely spot on seasoned, crispy on the outside and tender and juicy inside. The seasoning was very good and I was disappointed I only had the three pieces (breast, wing, thigh). Open late, Cornbread brings some amazing made to order Southern favorites that are good for the taste buds and the soul. Check them out!

After doing a good amount of strolling and window shopping, we worked up a serious appetite. That's when we came across Cornbread Montclair -- and let me tell you, deciding to stop in was one of the best choices we made all day. The atmosphere immediately felt warm and welcoming, with a clean, cozy interior that made us feel at home. It was our first time there, and from the moment we stepped in, the staff was friendly, attentive, and incredibly helpful in guiding us through the menu. I ordered the chicken and waffles with two pieces of their signature cornbread on the side. The chicken was crispy and seasoned to perfection, and the waffle had just the right amount of sweetness -- it all paired so well together. The cornbread? Moist, rich, and just the right texture. You can absolutely tell they take pride in using high-quality, farm-to-table ingredients. My other half went with the 3-piece fried chicken and collard greens, and he couldn't stop raving about how flavorful and comforting everything tasted. The collard greens were cooked perfectly -- tender with just the right amount of seasoning. There's something special about a place that not only serves incredible food but does so with heart. Can we please take a moment to appreciate the soul food I enjoyed at this establishment. The staff was so friendly and helped me make my decisions on what to try as it was my first time in. The sweet potato was warm and sweet and melted in your mouth. Combined with the spice of the chicken it was a perfect combo. The chicken was on the smaller end which would be my only complaint. The tea/lemonade was delicious! I usually complain that it's to sweet but it had a perfect ratio
Not impressed nor satisfied. I had heard it was a mediocre franchise but I thought I'd try for myself to support this new black business in the area. Giving three stars because service was great & the food was well prepared. The taste & seasoning is where it was off for me. Nothing about it was special even though it looked quite good. The greens were gross to me. The mac n cheese was not as cheesy. Their hot sauce brand wasn't my fave. I don't recommend but everyone's palate is different so you may like it.
Wow wow wow, absolutely loved this place. The catfish I ordered was amazing! The collard greens were perfect! The Mac and cheese, exactly what I was hoping for. Then if you add on the nice location with plenty of seating, as well as the great staff working there, I honestly can't wait to come back!!!

From the moment I walked in, the vibe felt warm and inviting classic soul food with a modern twist. The moment my food hit the table, I knew it was gonna be good. The cornbread itself was buttery, moist, and just the right amount of sweet exactly what I hoped for. I went with a fried catfish that was crispy on the outside and juicy inside, and the mac & cheese which was creamy and comforting. The collard greens had great flavor, and the portions were generous nothing skimpy here. Service was friendly and the restaurant felt clean and lively. Whether you're grabbing lunch with friends or sitting down for a comfy dinner, it hits that soul-food craving perfectly. Prices were good for the quality and amount you get. I absolutely love Montclair, NJ - It's definitely a foodie town! I've been to a few restaurants here before and they were all awesome, so I was so excited to try some soul food at this spot! I was greeted by their friendly and informative staff! I also loved the rustic decor and large comfy booths! I tried a variety of yummy food: For my proteins, I had the fried chicken and turkey wings! And for sides, I had mac and cheese, white rice with gravey, collard greens and potato salad! I ordered the peach cobbler and apple cobbler for desserts, and finally for drinks, I had the Uptown (lemonade and iced tea mix) and Southern Twang (a secret formula drink that has citrus flavors!) The turkey wings portion was absolutely huge!! I've never tried turkey wings that weren't fried before (I believe these were baked) so it was definitely something different! The chicken was nice and crispy and had lots of flavor! As for the sides, I absolutely loved the collard greens - probably the best I've ever had! It wasn't bitter, the texture was not mushy and I loved the savory flavors! The potato salad was also different - it tasted almost like a deviled egg! The apple and peach cobblers were the perfect sweets to end this delicious meal! read more
New in town, had to give it a try. Turkey wing entree. 3 turkey wings a bit salty.Mac and cheese was not cheesy. Cabbage was ok. 2 large pieces of crispy catfish well seasoned. Collard greens were sweet. The sides are smallest I've ever had from soul food restaurant. I ordered an extra piece of the large triangle cut cornbread based on reviews. Glad I did. The corn bread is moist large and the best in the area. read more

Great soul food! I went around 8 on a Friday night and it wasn't busy so I was able to get my food quickly. There are only a few tables, so it's more of a takeout place. I was worried about the food getting cold since they serve it cafeteria style, but it was still warm when I ate it at home. We ordered two mains and two side dishes: * Fried Chicken 10/10 - The seasoning on the chicken was perfect, not too overpowering, but flavorful. The thighs were very juicy inside but stayed crispy on the outside * Pork Ribs 8.5/10 - The sauce tasted a bit like bottled barbecue sauce but the meat was very tender and fell off the bone * Yams 8.5/10 - A little watery but perfect level of sweetness * Mac and Cheese 9/10 - Great cheese pull and pasta was not overcooked. Slight toasty cheese crust on top * Cornbread 10/10 - Not dry at all, which happens often with cornbread. Crispy outside and soft inside Overall, I would definitely come back again, especially for the fried chicken. The workers were friendly and they gave me good portions of food. My only complaint is that it's pricey, which is not unusual for Montclair. Two entrees with 1 side each was around $40. read more

Second time here and every time gets better. The best soul food around...Delicious, Cooked to perfection, excellent potion sizes and so reasonably priced for the quality and quantity you receive. The service at the Montclair location is the best, warm friendly and inviting. Makes you feel welcomed every time, in a homey comfortable settinglove this place, definitely will keep coming back. Ordered Takeout...kinda expensive $25 per person on average. The baked chicken was a bit salty, wait, not a bit, it was Salty! Small sides, lots of pepper in the Mac and Cheese. Overall it was ok. The cashier/server forgot to put the mac and cheese sides in the bag so we had to drive back to get it. We called and when we got back to the restaurant it wasn't ready and they didn't do anything to make the inconvenience right. The manager spoke to the server/cashier and she didn't knowledge him or me, she didn't care. Sad, poor service. read more

Visited this location while on vacation from Texas. I was very disappointed when my fish was fried with hair in it. When I notified the employee his Response was, "oh really". He never came over to the table to look at it. Overall my experience was horrible and I'll never visit here again. Please look At your food when you get it. Very unsanitary read more

I grabbed lunch to go here a few ago. I ordered and waited for my food which did take about 10 mins. I tried the fried catfish ($19) which came with a choice of side and a piece of cornbread. The catfish was flavorful and didn't smell overly fishy which is great. It came with two large pieces. The piece of cornbread was among the best I have ever had - it was soft, moist, and not the least bit dry. Really the perfect cornbread. The Mac n cheese was also good and flavorful and a decent side portion. It isn't cheap but the quality of the food was great. read more
2024.Feb.03: After reading some other reviews, decided to do a take-out order instead of dining in since it seemed like there wasn't ample seating. So instead of dining in, I placed an order online at 3pm on Saturday for an 8pm pickup that same day. While it's not huge inside, there seemed to be enough seating for 7-8 parties. It was pretty busy when we arrived but it seemed 50% of the people there were waiting for their takeout orders. Next time we go (and we will go again), we will just dinr in. Evidently there was some Uber promotion and they were seriously backed-up on putting orders together. We arrived at 8pm at our pick-up time and finally left with food-in-had at 8.20pm. We had a 10-minute walk home and the food was still hot. And I'll tell you what: the wait was worth it. The fried chicken was great (9/10), it was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and the seasoning was super flavorful. My GF got the fried whiting (fish) and she said it was comparable to Crockett's Fish Fry's offering (which she loves and rates a 9/10). I got a side of potato salad and yellow rice (both your typical tastes, I'd say 7/10 for both), my GF got the collard greens (she said it wasn't salty as others have stated, found it to be sweet and savory) and mac'n cheese (she really liked it, and so did I; cheesy, gooey, and parts of the top were still had a nice crust, 9/10 for both of us). The lemonade was a little too sweet for her (she diluted it with a little water), but it was perfect for me (as a sweetness barometer, I like sweet tea, she does not). She also got a peach cobbler and said, "it wasn't bad, I'd get it again, but next time I want to try their apple cobbler". And the namesake, the star of the show: the cornbread. Solid 10/10 for me, I'd say 8/10 for my GF. Nice crust on the outside (but not TOO crusty where it'd like, cut the roof of your mouth), and the inside was break-apart deliciousness. I ordered a 6-piece of it and am glad I did. My GF thought it was more cakey and sweet versus savory and corn-mealy (she likes hers a little drier); to me, it wasn't a dense, cakey cornbread, it was sweet, moist, and low-density. Different strokes for different folks. Overall I'd say 4.5/5, rounding up because Yelp. Lost half a point due to the service being on the slower side, but they're also new to the area and as I stated above, there was an Uber promo that seemed to slam them and put them behind in the count. read more
