Cornbread falls into that cafeteria-style category for me. We went on a Friday night and the restaurant was completely empty. I ordered the three-piece fried chicken with potato salad and cabbage. My friend had the oxtail with yams and collard greens. The fried chicken was flavorful and tasty, though I could tell it wasn't freshly fried--barely warm and not crispy, again, cafeteria style. The potato salad was really good and probably the highlight of my meal. The cabbage, however, had more onions and peppers than cabbage, which wasn't great. The cornbread itself was delicious but barely warm. I imagine it's really good straight out of the oven, but that's not what we were served. My friend did enjoy the oxtail. The collard greens were sweet but still good, and the yams were pretty decent. We ordered a peach cobbler to go because it sounded good, but once I got home it was very disappointing. The dough was barely cooked, and I could still see flour. If I had eaten it at the restaurant, I definitely would've sent it back. Service was great. The staff was friendly, we ordered at the counter, and they brought the food to our table. The space is small but has just enough seating. We were lucky to find on-street parking since we went late on a Friday night. They accept cash and all major credit cards. One small note: there are no bottled hot sauces, just small no-name packets, which weren't the best. We also had the sweet tea, which had a strange flavor--possibly honey--but it wasn't what I expected and I was no where near impressed. If you're expecting southern sweet tea, that's not what they have here. Pricing felt a little high for what's offered. This place is excellent. I bought my friend from Japan with his family and was happy to take them to Cornbread for some authentic soul food. Needless to say my friend and his family loved the experience. They were finishing a road trip throughout the US and they thought the food at Cornbread was some of the best they had in their month long journery. The turkey wings were particularly good and I'm saying this as a person who is mostly vegetarian. Service was also excellent with attentive help and the servers were conversational and friendly with my friends and I. Bathrooms were also very clean. 2024.Feb.03: After reading some other reviews, decided to do a take-out order instead of dining in since it seemed like there wasn't ample seating. So instead of dining in, I placed an order online at 3pm on Saturday for an 8pm pickup that same day. While it's not huge inside, there seemed to be enough seating for 7-8 parties. It was pretty busy when we arrived but it seemed 50% of the people there were waiting for their takeout orders. Next time we go (and we will go again), we will just dinr in. Evidently there was some Uber promotion and they were seriously backed-up on putting orders together. We arrived at 8pm at our pick-up time and finally left with food-in-had at 8.20pm. We had a 10-minute walk home and the food was still hot. And I'll tell you what: the wait was worth it. The fried chicken was great (9/10), it was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and the seasoning was super flavorful. My GF got the fried whiting (fish) and she said it was comparable to Crockett's Fish Fry's offering (which she loves and rates a 9/10). I got a side of potato salad and yellow rice (both your typical tastes, I'd say 7/10 for both), my GF got the collard greens (she said it wasn't salty as others have stated, found it to be sweet and savory) and mac'n cheese (she really liked it, and so did I; cheesy, gooey, and parts of the top were still had a nice crust, 9/10 for both of us). The lemonade was a little too sweet for her (she diluted it with a little water), but it was perfect for me (as a sweetness barometer, I like sweet tea, she does not). She also got a peach cobbler and said, "it wasn't bad, I'd get it again, but next time I want to try their apple cobbler". And the namesake, the star of the show: the cornbread. Solid 10/10 for me, I'd say 8/10 for my GF. Nice crust on the outside (but not TOO crusty where it'd like, cut the roof of your mouth), and the inside was break-apart deliciousness. I ordered a 6-piece of it and am glad I did. My GF thought it was more cakey and sweet versus savory and corn-mealy (she likes hers a little drier); to me, it wasn't a dense, cakey cornbread, it was sweet, moist, and low-density. Different strokes for different folks. Overall I'd say 4.5/5, rounding up because Yelp. I have been going to CORNBREAD for about a year.I went there today at 2 pm with my colleague. I ordered then She ordered. Her food came out in about 12 minutes. I ordered whiting and 2 sides. I was told that they were waiting on fish to fry. A total of 40 minutes go by, and I asked how much longer.The 2 women there then realized that they gave my food to someone else. They NEVER offered a complimentary drink or anything to make up for THEIR mistake. After ALL OF THAT, they gave me burned, spoiled whiting and mac and cheese CRUMBS.
