From the moment I walked in, the vibe felt warm and inviting classic soul food with a modern twist. The moment my food hit the table, I knew it was gonna be good. The cornbread itself was buttery, moist, and just the right amount of sweet exactly what I hoped for. I went with a fried catfish that was crispy on the outside and juicy inside, and the mac & cheese which was creamy and comforting. The collard greens had great flavor, and the portions were generous nothing skimpy here. Service was friendly and the restaurant felt clean and lively. Whether you're grabbing lunch with friends or sitting down for a comfy dinner, it hits that soul-food craving perfectly. Prices were good for the quality and amount you get. Would definitely come back again comfort food done right!

Food was amazing came out quick, and the service was great. Workers were very helpful and always kept a smile.

A delicious hidden gem! It's easy to get caught up in all the good food of Montclair but for southern comfort, this is your spot! We got the 3 piece and 2 side which was more than enough food. Mac & cheese was a must, collard green were delicious, yams tasted like Thanksgiving! Chicken had a thin layer of crispy breading which was perfect and so flavorful. We also got the Uptown tea which was their mix of homemade sweet tea and lemonade, so good. But the star of the show is the cornbread. It absolutely did not disappoint. Simona took our orders and she was just the sweetest. They are also open every day of the year including holidays!

Food (2.5/5): Unfortunately disappointed by the food. Fried Chicken and Fish was not very flavorful or spicy on its own. Mac & Cheese was very greasy. Not bad but did not meet expectations. The exception is the namesake cornbread. Will be coming back for some cornbread and then getting chicken from Popeyes... (sorry). Service (4/5): Although very friendly, the food got mixed up at first, then we were missing a piece of chicken, then we had to ask for utensils. These on their own are all harmless, but altogether just felt like a bit of a mess. Ambiance (5/5): Love the decor.

Parking is very hard in this area. But it was worth it. The food did take a bit long to receive but once we did we were happy. The food was well seasoned and flavorful. The server could have been more friendly and inviting.

I walked into Cornbread Farm to Soul on a busy day, so there was a little wait, but it was worth it. I could tell by watching the plates that they were bringing out to the tables that I was in for a treat. The fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and yellow rice were amazing. I've never been the biggest collard green fan but felt compelled to try it here and it was pretty good. I'm pretty sure that the cornbread here is the best cornbread I've had in my life! Lastly, I messed up by only getting a tiny sample of their peach cobbler, next time I'm there I'll get the biggest size they have!

    Amazing cornbread!

Stopped here to catch up with some old friends. The food was really good. The cornbread was absolutely delicious. I wasn't a fan of the sweet tea though. The service was excellent. We ordered at the counter and they brought the food to us. The ambiance is casual and it's a great space for groups. I would definitely come back and I would recommend it to others.

Traveling for work can sometimes grueling. Thank goodness for places like Cornbread to satisfy my cravings. Upon entering this little restaurant location in Montclair, NJ, I was immediately greeted with some friendly smiles and warm Southern hospitality. The place had a line that was several deep around dinner time. It was worth the wait. I decided to go with the three-piece fried chicken and cornbread. First of all, the cornbread was out of this world! Sweet, delicate, and perfectly prepared. Soft and delicious and an absolute star. So dangerous, in fact, that the lovely lady running the place served me up another slice on her because the outer crust was a bit torn off from the bottom of the hot pan it was prepared in. She didn't want to serve it to a new customer, but I gladly indulged myself in a second slice. The fried chicken was amazing. Absolutely spot on seasoned, crispy on the outside and tender and juicy inside. The seasoning was very good and I was disappointed I only had the three pieces (breast, wing, thigh). Open late, Cornbread brings some amazing made to order Southern favorites that are good for the taste buds and the soul. Check them out!

First-time visit and WOW -- Cornbread Montclair did not disappoint! We were spending the day walking around beautiful downtown Montclair, just exploring and enjoying the vibes. After doing a good amount of strolling and window shopping, we worked up a serious appetite. That's when we came across Cornbread Montclair -- and let me tell you, deciding to stop in was one of the best choices we made all day. The atmosphere immediately felt warm and welcoming, with a clean, cozy interior that made us feel at home. It was our first time there, and from the moment we stepped in, the staff was friendly, attentive, and incredibly helpful in guiding us through the menu. I ordered the chicken and waffles with two pieces of their signature cornbread on the side. The chicken was crispy and seasoned to perfection, and the waffle had just the right amount of sweetness -- it all paired so well together. The cornbread? Moist, rich, and just the right texture. You can absolutely tell they take pride in using high-quality, farm-to-table ingredients. My other half went with the 3-piece fried chicken and collard greens, and he couldn't stop raving about how flavorful and comforting everything tasted. The collard greens were cooked perfectly -- tender with just the right amount of seasoning. There's something special about a place that not only serves incredible food but does so with heart. From the friendly service to the delicious, thoughtfully made dishes, everything at Cornbread Montclair exceeded our expectations. You can feel the love and care that goes into every part of the experience. We'll definitely be coming back the next time we're in town. Whether you're a local or just passing through Montclair like we were, do yourself a favor and make a stop here. Highly, highly recommend!

Can we please take a moment to appreciate the soul food I enjoyed at this establishment. The staff was so friendly and helped me make my decisions on what to try as it was my first time in. The sweet potato was warm and sweet and melted in your mouth. Combined with the spice of the chicken it was a perfect combo. The chicken was on the smaller end which would be my only complaint. The tea/lemonade was delicious! I usually complain that it's to sweet but it had a perfect ratio

Wow wow wow, absolutely loved this place. The catfish I ordered was amazing! The collard greens were perfect! The Mac and cheese, exactly what I was hoping for. Then if you add on the nice location with plenty of seating, as well as the great staff working there, I honestly can't wait to come back!!!

Not impressed nor satisfied. I had heard it was a mediocre franchise but I thought I'd try for myself to support this new black business in the area. Giving three stars because service was great & the food was well prepared. The taste & seasoning is where it was off for me. Nothing about it was special even though it looked quite good. The greens were gross to me. The mac n cheese was not as cheesy. Their hot sauce brand wasn't my fave. I don't recommend but everyone's palate is different so you may like it.

I've had me some soul food in Mississippi and 'Bama, though at a fraction of the price you get up North. Look, it's a Montclair thing. Pluses: Black owned restaurant serving cultural staples, plus foods for people who don't want Southern. Ambiance featured soul music, and at one point was playing Shaft! I can dig it. You're not left wanting for food quantity or quality. Plenty of shrimp in the grits, for example. Server was very pleasant to talk to with a little Southern twang to her voice. Why not five stars: Flavor needs deepening. For example, in the South I'm used to seeing okra chopped and breaded before being fried. Maybe more oily that way, more carbs... but more flavor as a result. I had the pulled chicken mac, which was a bit smaller of a dish overall (a bit intentional on my part) - and while the cheese flavors run deep, the meat did not. Shrimp and grits, I took a quick sample of my friend's grits and... I bet you can guess my finding there. Still, a very nice change from the usual Northern selection of foods. I would not hesitate to say Sweet T's is authentic and a nice visit if you're in town. You'll be paying a pretty penny wherever you eat, so you can tag this one on your list.

However, this place wasn't bad. It has more of a Caribbean flare than southern. Still, delicious! Before the food, there's the service. I stopped in to make an order to-go. I was greeted upon entry and given the space/time to browse the menu before ordering. I partially knew what I wanted prior to coming; who doesn't take a peek at the menu beforehand, right?! The gentleman behind the counter who took my order was pleasant and patient. The food - I ordered a chicken dinner that consisted of henny wings (4) with 2 sides (mac & cheese, candied yams). And added an extra side of brussel sprouts, they looked too good to ignore. lso, I went on a Saturday but they seem to have pretty good deals going on during the week. My wings were delicious and flavorful. Pretty decent size for full wings, not stingy at all. I could have used a little more sauce, just a personal preference. Now the sides, they were just okay, except the brussels - they were AMAZING. The mac & cheese needed more cheese, it wasn't ooey gooey at all. The yams were good, a different type of sweet than the usual candied flavor. Eh. Ambiance - it's a quaint place with a few seats to relax while you wait. The wait wasn't bad being that your food is made to order. I will absolutely be back to try more menu items and get plenty more brussels. They're the star!!!

From the get-go, the staff is very kind, respectful, and quick to take your order. I got the cornbread, which, at similar restaurants, is typically free as a courtesy, but here it was $3. The cornbread was great; I'd give it a (9/10). Shortly after, our food came as I had ordered the fried chicken entree, which came with baked mac and cheese for an extra $2. From the bite of the mac and cheese, it came out really good; I enjoyed the crust and seasoning, and I would definitely order the mac and cheese again (10/10). I would give this restaurant 5 stars if only the chicken had come out better. It had a good crunch, but the taste was honestly pretty bland. I wanted some juice from it, considering it was dark meat, but it was also fairly dry. It wasn't the worst fried chicken I've ever had, but it definitely didn't make the list (5/10). All in all, this place was a good experience. The staff was nice, the wait wasn't long, and the portions of the sides and food are very big. The only improvement is that the chicken needs better flavor and less dryness. 3.75/5; good.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, sometimes the best cooked food is in "The Hood" and that rings oh so true with Soul Food Chess House. You won't get Maitre D Service here, but what you will get is the best the darn Fried Fish & Shrimp outside of Chateau A La Cheryl (that's my house, lol). I've come here so many times and have tried the fried whiting, fried shrimp, chicken wings, collard greens, Mac & cheese, potato salad and cabbage. What I can say about Soul Food Chess house that keeps me coming back is the consistency of the Shrimp. No matter what day of the week or hour of the day, the shrimp is always consistent. Whenever I have a taste for fried shrimp I have my go-to spots that I frequent, but they have all proven to be hit or miss at times; but with Soul Food Chess House they never disappoint. Now let's talk about the Fried Whiting. They cooked it with just the right amount of crispness & just the right amount of crunch, I love it, although they were a little heavy handed with the salt, it was honestly the best Fried Fish of any of the Soul Food Spots in NJ that I have tried. Though the potato salad is good, it's not great, but has potential to greatness! The reason it lacks greatness is because they're missing the eggs, potato salad without the eggs is what I call a shortcut; while taking a shortcut is good, it doesn't make for greatness, however, Soul Food Chess House does make pretty good potato salad overall , add those eggs and greatness will have been achieved. So until then I'll keep them at 4 stars. But the Shrimp gets 5 Stars hands down!
