Though it seems they do offer outdoor seating for when it isn't raining. Despite how busy they were, the service was still good. There were so many choices that it was hard to pick! I was lucky to speak with a regular in line who recommended the ube tart, and it did not disappoint at all. I also got the yuzu cheesecake, which provided a nice citrus balance. I've gotten several things here, including two birthday cakes, and every single item I have gotten here has been an absolute delight. The cream puffs are my go-to, the chocolate gateau is a decadent treat, and I cannot foresee myself wanting a birthday cake from anywhere else ever again. The storefront itself is a small, but airy, and well decorated place. There are a few tables out front, and a few seats indoors. I've generally gotten my goodies to go, and they have held up fine, even if not eaten until hours later (which is probably not what they recommend). The staff have been very friendly every time I've gone. It is a pricey treat, not an every-day place to stop, although I would love it if I was in a situation to make this an everyday stop. I REALLY wanted to like this place, but I really got SO many items and all but one were a complete miss for me. What makes that extra sad is that the items here are extremely pricy and I just think a bad product at that price is a real bummer. Black Sesame Cube Donut (1.75/5): This isn't a donut; it's a dense, dry muffin, not a fluffy dough at all. The black sesame inside is a grainy paste baked in rather than a cream. Flavor is fine, but misleading and not the best mouthfeel. Vanilla Cream Puff (2.75/5): The shell I got was stale in spite of the fact that they fill it to order, which is a real shame because the cream inside has a fantastic, luscious texture and strong vanilla flavor. On top of that, it's 8 bucks and just made me wish I had Beard Papa's instead. Yuzu Cheesecake (4/5): Best item I tried: great tart flavor, but I actually wish there was more cheese flavor or even just creaminess in it. Super smooth all the way through and melt in your mouth. Kyoto (1.75/5): The flavors aren't bad, but the textures are ROUGH. Insanely dense, dry cake with ganache so thick it's a brick. This is just not my favorite. Acceptable with tea. Beware: Outrageous extra fee with no transparency. I want to like this place, but I'm disappointed. I got their tiramisu to go ($9.60 before tax and fee). I've had 45 tiramisus in Seattle, and this falls in the middle: good/average. It has good flavor, texture, and moisture, but it's a sugar bomb. Tiramisu shouldn't be so shockingly sugary. When I was rung up, I was asked if I wanted a paper bag. I expected that I might be charged the 8 cent WA bag fee, but there were no signs, and I wasn't told there would be a fee. Usually, I carry my own reusable bag for planned purchases, but I stopped here on a whim during a 14-mile bike ride, and didn't bring one. I walked out the door and after calculating the math, realized I'd been charged 60 cents for the bag. This is an outlandish 7.5x upcharge on a small paper bag!!! There is no transparency about this from the bakery. I went back inside, waited in line a second time, asked for a refund, returned the bag, and then had to stuff the tiramisu in the chest of my jacket to bike home. I'm still waiting for the correct charge to process. I have purchased Pastry Mitten products at both PCC and Uwajimaya. Their black sesame shortbread cookies are like tea biscuit cookies. The texture is good, but the black sesame isn't that flavorful. The souffle cheesecake was good, but I was expecting it to be lighter. It is fine on its own or with the berry sauce which is good. I've only eaten souffle cheesecake twice and I prefer the one at Hiroki. The interior was cozy, small, and bustling. There are tables inside and outside. I'm tired of businesses charging extra fees - mandatory service fees, 3-3.5% fees for using a credit card, bag fees - but at least some companies are transparent about it. Mitten Sweets is not. ....UPDATE: via Square, the owner provided a courteous explanation and apology. While part of it is non-rational (they use single-use plastics, which are more harmful for the environment, and then claim to support waste reduction by upcharging for reusable/recyclable paper), their professional and sincere response of "adding clear signage near the register in the future to ensure transparency for all customers" is very appreciated. read more

I visited again recently and am still such a fan! They have more food offerings than the last time I visited and also some different drinks too that appear to change seasonally! We had a caramel coffee jelly drink which was so good! Not too sweet (the caramel balanced well with the coffee jelly). I visited this cute bakery in first hill on a rainy sunday and it definitely satisfied my sweet treat craving! The space inside is small, but there's a good variety of drink and dessert options! They even do specialty cakes for special occasions. I ended up getting two slices of cake; the kyoto, which is a matcha cake with strawberry ganache, and the koto which is a hojicha with hojicha ganache ($12.91 for both). They both looked dense but weren't dry and I think I preferred the matcha more! I wish the filling was creamier but I still enjoyed both. Came here to catch up with a friend over some drinks and pastries! Just fyi parking is pretty limited around the area so be prepared to walk a few blocks, even on a weekday! The store itself is pretty small with a handful of seats bar style. There was a big glass display of all their Asian inspired baked goods which all looked really yummy! I ended up getting the hojicha latte and my friend got the matcha while chocolate latte. The hojicha latte was really good and had a nice strong tea flavor. I also got the blueberry coconut cake which had good flavor but the texture was more dense than I expected. Cute cafe overall but the only thing I would note is they kept their front door open the whole time so it was pretty cold the whole time we were there. We had the iced hojicha latte, ube pie, Kyoto matcha and strawberry cake, and the strawberry fresh cream cake. All of their pastries are delicious -- I wish I tried the shortbread too! A little hidden neighborhood gem of a bakery. Our friend told us this was one of his favorite bakeries in Seattle. It was a warm day when we stopped by. There isn't indoor seating but they do have hightop counters if you want to stand and eat/drinks your items. Service was friendly. It did take a little longer for our drinks to be made but they were very refreshing and worth waiting for on a hot day. Items we tried - - orange tart - this was our friend's favorite and it was very tasty - apple pastry - very solid pastry and tasty - warabi mochi cup - my friend and husband enjoyed but I thought the warabi mochi texture was off. I like mine a little more chewy. - hojicha cake - from the look I thought it was going to be dry but was pleasantly surprised it had a melt in your mouth ganache sort of texture. I had this place bookmarked for ages and finally got to try it. Looking through the reviews, I must've ordered the wrong things. I got an orange tart and soufflé cheesecake with berry sauce. Both desserts were good (cheesecake was super light, orange tart was fine) but definitely not like $8 a slice good. I think maybe I should've heated it up? It's not in the most obvious area so you definitely need to to seek it out. The place itself is pretty small so mostly take out. The display has a lot of Wonderful and unique treats that I wanted to try but I had to control myself hahaha. We ended up getting: Cinnamon apple pie - similar to an apple turnover, flaky, good amount of sweetness Yuzu lemon cake - dense cake but not dry and very flavorful Black sesame/red bean baked donut --- very interesting combo and similar texture of the lemon cake but maybe a little denser but very addicting flavor Edamame danish - like a cruffin, the edamame is subtle but there, I like this one a lot The lady who helped us was very nice. She answered all of our questions. Price is standard. My only critique is the naming of the pastries, they are a little a little misleading so we had to ask a lot of questions to clarify. Mitten Sweets & Coffee Japanese bakery is one of my favorite local businesses. It's conveniently across the street from Seattle University and has a homey, charming vibe. They switch out some of their menu items seasonally, so be sure to stop in during the fall for their kabocha pastry. The pastries tend to be on the sweet side, whereas their cakes are less so. My favorite things to order have been... - Hot coffee (5/5): great value, not super sour tasting like a few other coffee shops. - Warabimochi (4/5): I could not for the life of me find warabimochi anywhere in Seattle until here. It comes in the cutest cup and is generously coated with brown sugar sauce, kinako powder, and comes with a pat of red bean and vivid green edamame paste. It's beautifully presented and reminds me of warabimochi I've enjoyed in Japan. Make sure you allow the mochi to warm up to room temp a bit before eating for optimal texture. - Orange tart (5/5): I don't usually care for citrus pastries, but it was too pretty to not order. It was a delicious pairing with the unsweetened hot coffee. - Savory pastries (4/5): I think I ordered a ham and cheese (forgot). Not particularly memorable but it was delicious! I do want to order one of their whole cakes someday (SO uniquely decorated and pretty), but you have to place an order at least 3 days ahead of time. Keep that in mind for your next party where you want to impress with a non-85º bakery cake. This cafe is not ideal for studying as there's 4 bar seats only and 1-2 tables outside. This is a French dessert pastry shop with a Japanese tilt to it. They also have a few savory items such as quiches (with vegetarian options extremely limited, unfortunately), and although their focaccia for their sandwiches is house made, it is not a bread and croissant bakery. The Japanese tilt comes from items flavored with yuzu, matcha, red bean paste, kabocha, black sesame seeds and other accents. It appears to be run entirely by Japanese people. It is simply a divine combination, with the execution fully on the level of the idea. Some upscale grocery stores, such as certain PCC locations, carry a few of their items that will survive unrefrigerated for several days or even weeks. But for the real French pastry style items, you owe it to yourself to visit the retail café in person. And don't just rely on the website other than to get an idea of what kinds of things they offer. It isn't kept fully up to date, so you may be in for delightful undisclosed surprises. What can I say other than repeat the word "divine"? It totally describes the taste, flavor balance, texture and appearance of their products, and the Japanese elements blend in completely harmoniously. Such imagination! (I'll have to admit that while I like matcha tea, I'm not in on the craze for matcha flavored edibles, so I'll have to leave it to others to judge those.) This is not merely quality baking. It is refined culinary artistry. Add in friendly service, and you can see where the five stars come from. We did not try any of the drinks and so cannot pass on those. This is hands down my favorite pastry shop in the Seattle area and far outclasses the others, in my opinion. We went in mid-morning on a holiday weekend and found the ambiance pleasantly laid back, without any of the elbow-bashing crowds and lines going all the way around the block that other such establishments are infamous for. The seating area is limited, and although they do have a couple tables for seasonal outdoor seating, the street scene is nothing exceptionally pleasant, so the sit-down café element isn't the place's real draw. We recommend taking out and eating at home, which is what we did. Two caveats: One, as some other reviewers have pointed out, you need to understand what French dessert pastry is and be into it to appreciate the place's offerings. Don't expect the aggressively sweet, gooey items that many Americans love or you will be disappointed. And two, for the sake of both your waistline and your pocketbook, you will want to indulge in the place as an occasional treat rather than as a steady diet. Fair warning. And if you are beguiled by the notion of Franco-Asiatic pastry shops, you might want to check out the 2008 movie "Antique," a Koreanized cinematic adaptation of a Japanese comic series centered around a pastry shop. It's a little fast paced and hard to follow if you're not familiar with the story line of the manga, but the real stars are - well, the pastries, along with the gorgeous actors who obviously are extremely careful about how many of these pastries they consume in real life. But it seems, they have found a new home this past month as Mitten Sweets & Coffee in Seattle's Central District neighborhood transitioning from their Tukwila production site. A very pleasant spot for Seattle University students and staff and also a decent walk from nearby First Hill and Capitol Hill neighborhoods. Hopefully this will be third time's the charm at this site, formerly Happy Grillmore and Cakes & Trees. I had the opportunity to stop by Sunday afternoon (11/13/22). I liked that there were some lush foliage in the front windows of their retail site. Maybe gifted from the former owner of Cakes & Trees? Upon entering the retail site, one is greeted by a very enticing pastry case and welcoming counter person. Maybe the owner? There's some counter space but no available onsite seating. Nice pastry production area with lots of natural light, seeing other staff focused on various tasks. I ended up buying a slice each of their chocolate and matcha gateaux, each lightly dusted with powdered sugar. Reminded me of flourless dense cakes from other area cafes, restaurants, and ones I've baked in the past. Later back at home, shared and sampled each cake slice with The Homie. Our go-to orders are the traditional soufflé Japanese cheesecake, and the chocolate cake with fresh strawberry filling. The only cake that we've ordered that wasn't 100 percent to our liking was the matcha one - it is intensely vegetal (and we generally love matcha).
