I had the malasada from here, which is a basically fried dough with a filling inside. However, this place is known for a particular version of it - the Crunchy Cream Malasada - which has a crunchy corn flakes coating, along with the vanilla frosting inside. This is the version I had. It's fantastic. The first thing that stands out is the amazing crunch from the cornflakes on the breading. Compared to similar versions of this food I've had - the doughnut is always soft on the outside. And this can be quite enjoyable, but when there's a textural contrast coming from the outside, it just elevates it to a whole another level. The individual cornflakes as well as the entire outside is breaded perfectly. Biting into this is such a satisfying experience. The inside is also quite good. It's a vanilla custard flavor, and it fits in really well by both filling the doughnut in volume but not being excessive enough to ooze out easily. The flavor is quite sweet and vanilla-forward, and very nice. For just $4, these are around the size of your average doughnut. Overall, it's a fantastic treat that I did not even expect this place to serve, but I'm very happy I had it. 9/10 read more

It's small with no inside seating, but it's nice to grab a cup of coffee and go across the street to the park and watch some ping pong, buskers, or other activities going on. While the exterior is unassuming, the bread and pastries are peak. You can see what they offer in the shop window , turn the corner and order at the door. The prices were pretty reasonable-- mini breads were less than $5 a piece and packed with flavor. Don't miss the mini baguette with bacon. The kouign amann is much smaller than others I've tried, but supremely flaky. Smaller portions just give you more reasons to buy more. The malasadas are soft and have a good custard filling. Their shokupan (white bread loaf) is probably better than ones I've had in Japan, and isn't made with preservatives, which is super rare nowadays. You can choose from thick or thin cut slices. Like many Japanese bakeries even in Japan, the fried curry bread and katsu (breaded and fried pork or chicken) sandwiches are already made, so don't expect anything cooked to order or served hot. It's in the heart of the ID (International District) and the corner shop locations has plenty of window viewing so you can easily look to see what appeals to you. The malasadas are a culinary staple. The crunchy cereal malasadas with the cream is done right. The cream inside is light and only slightly sweet. The bread is light and airy and the exterior sugar and cereal counting help provide a nice texture. Truly a fave for me was the s'mores croissant. It was flaky, packed big on chocolate flavor, and just fun to eat and enjoy with the marshmallow and graham cracker. One of the best things about this bakery is that their offerings are always fresh. I love this storefront bakery so much, and have been going here for quite a while since the time when the pandemic started to ease in 2022. Back then it was to have some of their lattes which I found pretty good. For this visit, I had one of their malasadas. This was on a Saturday noon, and when I got here there was already quite a long line but it went by quickly. There's no seating at this place; it's all grab and go. Other than malasadas and lattes, they also have cakes, danishes, pain suisse and other pastries, with many people grabbing their olive breads the day I went. I've tried their red bean azuki malasadas before and since I needed a stomach for an event later that day, I got just one lilikoi malasada. It's a passion fruit flavored malasada, and my current picture of it doesn't do it justice at all. It was creamy and wasn't a sour taste in my mouth. There was a good amount of filling inside my donut, and flavor profile wasn't overly strong. There's a ton of sugar on top as expected of malasadas, but this place knows how to make their fillings a little weaker in taste strongness to compensate for that. If you're not into the long lines or overly sweetened malasadas/brioche donuts that The Flour Box has, this is the perfect alternative. read more

When in doubt, yelp it out. My sister and I were in Seattle for a couple days, and on our last day she wanted to go to a bakery for some quick breakfast pastries! A friend highly recommended this bakery which is famous for their Malasadas (Hawaiian donuts). The store has different varieties of Malasadas which includes Azuki (Red bean), Lilikoi, Ube, Matcha and Crunchy cream. My favorites are Ube Malasada and Crunchy cream Malasada. The Ube Malasada is a brioche dough filled with housemade Ube custard while the crunchy cream Malasada is made with brioche dough with corn flakes filled with housemade vanilla custard cream. I finally had a chance to try out Fuji Bakery after walking past in the CID so many times (so much food to try, so little stomach space!). This location is just a small walk up window and they have all their pastries and breads displayed in the window facing 6th Ave. One very slight annoyance I had was that there's no bread menu at the payment counter and instead I had to memorize the buns I wanted to order. Everything else from the line to the ordering goes pretty quickly. Beef Curry ($5.25) - Starting with the exterior, there's a nice chewy fried donut-like exterior studded with plenty of crunchy panko bits. This encapsulates a beef and vegetable curry mixture on the inside. There's not really a discernible texture to the filling - instead, it's almost paste-like in consistency, rather than being a curry that is thick stew as with most other curry pans. The taste is quite nice with a strong salty curry-forward punch with each bite. (5/5) Milk Stick ($3.75) - I thought it would be like a Korean salted butter roll before my purchase, but it turned out to be totally different. The bread is dense and chewy and has a nice sweetness level. It's cut in half and filled with a large slab of buttercream spread. The buttercream is on the softer side and doesn't harden up much, indicating lack of butter content. Still, it's nice to eat. (4/5) Butter Twist ($5.95) - The butter twist doesn't seem to be laminated croissant dough as the description implies. Or if it is laminated, it's not with nearly as many layers as their croissants items. Instead of being flaky, the interior is bready and a little tough, but a bit buttery and chewy. It's well baked with a nice crust on top I especially love the crunchy pearl sugar on top. (4/5) Matcha Cruffin ($5.25) - What the butter twist lacks, the cruffin has in spades. Good lamination, buttery layers, paired with a strong matcha taste from both the hardened shell on top and matcha cream on the inside. The muffin wrapper sticks on the pastry a bit too much and combined with everything else makes this a bit messy to eat. I found the construction to be pretty interesting - the cruffin is rolled into a ball and stuffed into the wrapper instead of being layered in the mold. They don't overpack the dough so there's still enough room for the layers to separate, allowing no dense spots to form in the dough at all. (5/5) I'm very impressed with the pastries I bought from Fuji Bakery. I will be returning to this location and will also try to make a trip to the original Interbay location. read more

This is my second time visiting this bakery. I've always been a huge fan of their katsu and egg sando: it reminds me so much of the sandos in Japan. They seem to have renovated the interior recently and it's a lot more spacious, with a dedicated space for you to watch pastry chefs making the next batch of dessert orders. Service was quick and I've also added in an order of the matcha malasada and cruffin for the first time. Nothing bad to say about the pastries, both were delicious. It's a Japanese bakery and they have donuts, pastries, sandwiches, coffee and tea. This is the perfect spot to pick up a sweet treat. They have some savory options too but not as many compared to the sweet options. Their donuts are masaladas which have different fillings like matcha, strawberry, red bean, lilikoi (passion fruit), ube, etc. I tried the strawberry, lilikoi, and crunchy cream. All were delicious, they had a light fluffy dough and a good amount of filling. The crunchy cream one was covered in cereal which made it have a fun crunchy texture. I kept reading about this bakery - so many different places. So, of course, I had to go. Itʻs in Chinatown and near the Union Station. (Union Station is worth going in and seeing the amazing re-built architecture. A sign said that it is supposed to mimic a roman bath.) The bakery is on the corner of a building with the items for sale visible along the edges of two sides of the building and they basically sell out of a window. The items are both traditional and modern, Asian takes on various French pastries (as well as malasadas which I associate with Hawaii or Portuguese food). There were so many things I wanted that it was hard to choose just two. I chose the matcha cruffin, although there was a matcha malasada. This was not too sweet and not bitter as matcha can be. I also liked how it looked. The other item I purchased was a red bean paste malasada. The filling was also not too sweet and ample. Found this place on a list of Seattle's best bakeries and was sold as soon as I saw they made ube maladadas! It's a cute corner takeout bakery with a window display of all their baked goods and a register that you order from. I was surprised to see they had a pretty varied assortment of baked goods between sweet and savory, Western and Eastern. I got the ube malasada, the lilikoi malasada, and the curry pan. I ate the ube malasada right then and there, and it was fairly good. The dough isn't nearly as fluffy and light as the malasadas I've had in Hawaii, but it was still fairly well-risen and tender. It was generously filled with ube cream, which tasted great. It makes a filling snack. Even eaten hours later, the lilikoi (passionfruit) malasada held up well and was also nicely filled with cream. I liked this one even more! The lilikoi flavor really came through, and the tartness is refreshing. My husband doesn't even like lilikoi and went back for two more bites. The curry pan was also very good! The curry tasted authentic, and the overall flavor of the donut and curry together brought me right back to Japan. I would've loved just a little more curry filling. The only thing that would bump this up to 5 stars is if they weren't served so cold (especially that curry pan!). Even keeping the pastries in a warming tray or an offer to warm it up slightly would be nice. Cold donuts are always a hard sell. But for being cold, they were still pretty good! read more

Since it's a walk up window, there's no seating but there's a park right across the street.
