    Veggie Samosas
    PennyandRusty P.

Been having some serious cravings for donairs/shawarmas lately (ever since that time when our fav donair shop was closed when we got there). So, when we found ourselves in the Mt. Pleasant area of Vancouver, we decided to try grabbing some donairs from a place that we've never been to before... Mitra Canteen. As with most donair shops, there wasn't too many donair options... so we picked one each of the Chicken Donair Wrap and the Beef and Lamb Donair Wrap ($10 each). I thought it was a bit odd that you couldn't pick just "beef" or just "lamb" and that it came as "beef and lamb". Each donair comes with hummus, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, tabouli and your choice of tzatziki or tahini sauce. We also ordered some Veggie Samosas ($1.50 each) - I know, I know... seems a bit of an odd mix with donairs. So, the samosas were large and came with a thick but limp shell that encased the potato chunks. The flavour of the veggie filling was okay but I was a bit turned off at how soft the exterior of the samosas were. It was a little bit better after we heated it up in the oven a bit but it still never crisped up enough. I found the donairs to be very loosely wrapped and messy to eat. One of donairs had the wrapper wrapped within the wrap so so we had to try to carefully pull that out so we didn't bite into it. The tzatziki came served on the side - wish it would have been put inside the wrap but that probably would have taken more effort. I also didn't really taste the tabouli in the wrap and the meat didn't taste well seasoned. Overall, I was disappointed with the food here and thought they needed to put in a bit more effort.

Good for the price given the location. It's rather hidden away given all the other ostentatious vendors in the area. Good for a quick bite and on your way. Not for ambience or sit down dining

Was craving a good donair around Main Street, and looked on yelp to see the closest one, and found this place. Prices have gone up from the last prices some people have posted on here, but it's definitely still reasonable and worth every penny. For $12, you can get a Chicken Shawarma plate. The chicken was well seasoned, it was nice and crispy on the outside and juicy in the inside. The plate comes with a portion of seasoned rice, Greek salad and tabouleh. It also comes with a big heaping scoop of homemade hummus and it was absolutely delicious. Seems like a family owned business, and the two people who were working at that time were really happy and friendly. Quick to greet, take my order and to make my plate.

We ordered the falafel plate, veggie plate, and lamb shank. Side of salad had a refreshing dressing. Everything was average. For those of us with MSG sensitivity, then I would avoid this food. My throat was feeling the effects from ?MSG, and another member in our party was feeling it in his temples. Only a couple of tables to sit at; however, you can sit in the adjoining bar, Uncle Abe's, which was equally small. Service was friendly. Order and pay at counter. Metered street parking. Free street parking if you walk a little further.

Still a good value despite a modest price increase. Shawarma wraps and Shawarma plates in your choice of beef, chicken or lamb are their most popular items. They are generous with the servings and all ingredients are fresh. The chicken, in particular, has a good mix of crispy crust and juicy centres after coming off the rotisserie. The hummus is good in terms of taste and texture. For about $20, two people can eat here. You might also have money left over to try their baklava.

It was so sunny day and we decided to dine here because we were looking for a patio section to sit and dine along Main Street. Food preparation was fast. Service was friendly and we were able to seat ourselves, order food, pick up food and pay afterwards. There were two toddlers at the table so feeding them ASAP helped keep the kids happy. I ordered a chicken shawarma plate ($10.50) and a can of pop ($1.50). The shawarma plate was super tasty. It was a flavour explosion. The chicken was nicely marinated and sauced. The rice was nicely seasoned. The hummus and salad were a nice addition and balanced the meal nicely. Cash or debit only.

Tasty chicken shwarma. They even gave me extra tabouleh when requested. The chicken was nicely cooked with bits of charred meat here and there which gives a nice crunch. The vegetables were really fresh. Everything served wrapped in a thin and chewy pita. Nice. i sat by the open window and watched the world go by as I enjoyed my food.

Mitra Canteen met expectations. I came to town craving an authentic, flavour packed Schwarma wrap and due to logistics, I didn't want to venture out to my preferred Schwarma location. I had the lamb/beef wrap and while the flavour was there, the size of it was rather disappointing for the price. I'm more accustom to fillings falling out every bite but this was the cleanest Schwarma experience I've had. I like this place because there was ample seating. I'll likely go back to my regular location next time or order the Schwarma plate because it looked delicious and for $2 more, it was almost two meals in one.

Great little hole in the wall. I've had many different items off the menu. Tonight I tried something new for me, #6 - veg platter with eggplant, potato, dolmate, tabouli, hummus, and pita. Most of the plates are $9.50 (tax included) and well worth it. In the summer I love to grab a meal to go and head to the park near by. The service is great and fast, food is excellent (I scarfed my meal down so fast!). I think there is a connecting room next door that you can order beer and such. As I was leaving, I heard an order being placed for the balsamic chicken salad. That's what I am trying next time, with a beer!

There seems to be a shortage of shawarma places outside of the downtown area. We went to Mitra with a "that'll do" attitude and we were pleasantly surprised. The lamb & beef shawarma wrap was fresh and delicious. Portion was just right. For $2 more, you can get the shawarma plate. And from what I saw, the portion was huge. There is extra seating in the adjoining space that looks at first to be belonging a different establishment, but it is part of Mitra.

Definitely try to go at opening or when it is not busy, as the dine-in experience is memorable - they place your order in a long wooden board to make it a beautiful spread. We got the Manoush'eh Special which has ground beef, pomegranate, etc and Sham Style which is shaped like a boat. We also tried the yogurt drink which pairs well with the dishes. The only con is that this place does not have free water, but it is no problem to have our own water bottles supplementing the meal. We also got the lentil soup which is pretty good. Definitely sufficient to share one to try, but the Manoush'eh outshines the rest of the items. I loved the quality and texture of the Manoush'eh and just the breads in general. It is a lot of food for 2 people so if you want a snack, you can definitely just share 1. Some people go here for the wraps too. Overall, an affordable restaurant with good food. We got the most expensive items and it was less than 50 CAD all-in, but a lot of the items are around the 10 CAD mark.

From the moment we sat down, the experience was something special. They start you off with warm, grilled bread alongside a gorgeous pool of fresh olive oil, and here's the touch that sets the tone for the whole evening: the oregano garnishing that oil is cut tableside from a live plant. It's a small detail, but it tells you everything about how much this kitchen cares. We went all in on the menu and have zero regrets. The spread platter was outstanding, multiple dips, beautifully presented with soft bread, each one distinct and well-crafted. The warm marinated olives were rich and aromatic, the kind of thing you keep reaching back into. The calamari was perfectly fried, light, crispy, served with a creamy tzatziki dipping sauce. For mains, the whole lobster with fries was a showstopper, generous, fresh, and served with clarified butter and a tangy sauce. The halibut was elegant and delicate, plated with roasted vegetables and large capers in a way that felt genuinely refined. The cocktails and drink program held up beautifully throughout the meal too. This is the kind of restaurant that makes a night feel like an occasion. The food is thoughtful, the ingredients are clearly quality, and the atmosphere delivers. And Yuri, our waiter, was absolutely fantastic. If you're on the fence because of that rating -- ignore it. How we got here: my lunch appointment went long and I was hungry, needed to grab something quick before the next meeting. I had seen a sign somewhere in the area for a lovely Greek gyro previously. I wasn't able to find the sign/restaurant I had seen previously. We walked past this place and while I was trying to figure out whether or not they offered a Greek gyro, one of the workers there essentially pulled us in off the street and put a menu in front of us. They have so many images-everywhere it was a bit of a challenge to figure it out quickly. I saw the shaved lamb on the right of the "cooking area" so I figured I would get what I was asking for. In the restaurant, that was basically empty at lunch, I figured out why he grabbed us, they are probably desperate for business. They also charged us like we were the only paying customers. Most places offer a lunch combo meal, gyro, drink and fries for a single low price but our order of two combos was nearly $60!!!! I have receipt!!! (See attached). What we got was definitely not shaved lamb. The meat was chunky, beef stew LIKE meat and as I am unfortunately eating this as I write this review I can't tell you it tastes AWFUL!! They probably get this s#it cheap!!! On it, was some kind of sauce, also not tzatziki. As they are Persian and not Greek I suspect they don't even know what tzatziki sauce is! You can tell from the pictures the sauce isn't right, the vegetables don't look fresh, the bread is stale The $7 order of fries is disgusting as well. I wanted to treat myself to ordering lunch out. I will NEVER patronize this place again, I dare call it a restaurant, it should be permanently closed. I think I have to vomit now to save myself! Please consider this WARNING a gift.
