While still a great patio location, the quality of food has slipped a great deal. Ordered the burger, trio of dips and shawarma fries with added lamb and a few draught beers. Service is great, dog friendly which is huge! But, this 12$ dish trio of dips is advertised as coming with three dips, sliced cucumbers, olives, pita and chips and well it left a lot to be desired. There was three cucumber slices, no olives and no pita just the crumbled up bottom of the bag of chips, super disappointing and overpriced! Shawarma fries had great seasoning but were definitely mushy, and we didn't let them sit around as we were starving. Burger was fabulous! Maybe it was just a bad day? But you'd think a shawarma place like this wouldn't run out of pita. Maybe they should double fry the fries so they don't congeal. $70 bill, not cheap. If I go back I'll stick to plain fries and the burger, skip dips and shawarma fries. read more

Decent place for falafel and other veggie items that make it pretty vegan-friendly in an already very vegan-friendly neighbourhood. I was in need of a quick lunch, so I decided to try this place out. I ordered the Hodge Podge ($12 incl tax), a plate with falafel, rice, roast potato, a dolma, tabouleh, house salad, hummus, pita, and tahini (usually tzatziki, but they switched them to make this plate vegan). The plate was ready in 3 minutes. The falafel was good, adequately spiced, not too oily, and nicely textured. Nothing else was all that interesting. The spiced rice was nice but bland; same with the potato. The tabouleh was decent; the house salad was lame. The hummus was fine. Overall, I was definitely full, but there was nothing special about the plate. Okay spot for an inexpensive, quick meal. read more

Been having some serious cravings for donairs/shawarmas lately (ever since that time when our fav donair shop was closed when we got there). So, when we found ourselves in the Mt. Pleasant area of Vancouver, we decided to try grabbing some donairs from a place that we've never been to before... Mitra Canteen. As with most donair shops, there wasn't too many donair options... so we picked one each of the Chicken Donair Wrap and the Beef and Lamb Donair Wrap ($10 each). I thought it was a bit odd that you couldn't pick just "beef" or just "lamb" and that it came as "beef and lamb". Each donair comes with hummus, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, tabouli and your choice of tzatziki or tahini sauce. We also ordered some Veggie Samosas ($1.50 each) - I know, I know... seems a bit of an odd mix with donairs. So, the samosas were large and came with a thick but limp shell that encased the potato chunks. The flavour of the veggie filling was okay but I was a bit turned off at how soft the exterior of the samosas were. It was a little bit better after we heated it up in the oven a bit but it still never crisped up enough. I found the donairs to be very loosely wrapped and messy to eat. One of donairs had the wrapper wrapped within the wrap so so we had to try to carefully pull that out so we didn't bite into it. The tzatziki came served on the side - wish it would have been put inside the wrap but that probably would have taken more effort. I also didn't really taste the tabouli in the wrap and the meat didn't taste well seasoned. Overall, I was disappointed with the food here and thought they needed to put in a bit more effort. read more

Was craving a good donair around Main Street, and looked on yelp to see the closest one, and found this place. Prices have gone up from the last prices some people have posted on here, but it's definitely still reasonable and worth every penny. For $12, you can get a Chicken Shawarma plate. The chicken was well seasoned, it was nice and crispy on the outside and juicy in the inside. The plate comes with a portion of seasoned rice, Greek salad and tabouleh. It also comes with a big heaping scoop of homemade hummus and it was absolutely delicious. We ordered the falafel plate, veggie plate, and lamb shank. Side of salad had a refreshing dressing. Everything was average. For those of us with MSG sensitivity, then I would avoid this food. My throat was feeling the effects from ?MSG, and another member in our party was feeling it in his temples. Still a good value despite a modest price increase. Shawarma wraps and Shawarma plates in your choice of beef, chicken or lamb are their most popular items. They are generous with the servings and all ingredients are fresh. The chicken, in particular, has a good mix of crispy crust and juicy centres after coming off the rotisserie. It was so sunny day and we decided to dine here because we were looking for a patio section to sit and dine along Main Street. Food preparation was fast. Service was friendly and we were able to seat ourselves, order food, pick up food and pay afterwards. There were two toddlers at the table so feeding them ASAP helped keep the kids happy. I ordered a chicken shawarma plate ($10.50) and a can of pop ($1.50). The shawarma plate was super tasty. It was a flavour explosion. The chicken was nicely marinated and sauced. Portions are great and filling! I had the chicken rice plate and especially loved how flavourful the rice is. Wish it had more tzatziki but I think you can always ask for more. I also love the unique situation this place has with Abe's next door. It's like stepping between portals and makes for a notable local experience. There is a doorway between the two establishments and customers are able to take their food over to Abe's. Tasty chicken shwarma. They even gave me extra tabouleh when requested. The chicken was nicely cooked with bits of charred meat here and there which gives a nice crunch. Mitra Canteen met expectations. I came to town craving an authentic, flavour packed Schwarma wrap and due to logistics, I didn't want to venture out to my preferred Schwarma location. I had the lamb/beef wrap and while the flavour was there, the size of it was rather disappointing for the price. I'm more accustom to fillings falling out every bite but this was the cleanest Schwarma experience I've had. I like this place because there was ample seating. I'll likely go back to my regular location next time or order the Schwarma plate because it looked delicious and for $2 more, it was almost two meals in one. read more

Great little hole in the wall. I've had many different items off the menu. Tonight I tried something new for me, #6 - veg platter with eggplant, potato, dolmate, tabouli, hummus, and pita. Most of the plates are $9.50 (tax included) and well worth it. In the summer I love to grab a meal to go and head to the park near by. The service is great and fast, food is excellent (I scarfed my meal down so fast!). I think there is a connecting room next door that you can order beer and such. As I was leaving, I heard an order being placed for the balsamic chicken salad. That's what I am trying next time, with a beer! read more

There seems to be a shortage of shawarma places outside of the downtown area. We went to Mitra with a "that'll do" attitude and we were pleasantly surprised. The lamb & beef shawarma wrap was fresh and delicious. Portion was just right. For $2 more, you can get the shawarma plate. And from what I saw, the portion was huge. I usually find myself meandering in this establishment after a shopping stint next door at Yek o Yek (which is also wicked awesome). This works against my favour because all plans to make a home cooked meal with my ingredients in tow are nixed as soon as the aromatic scent wafts up into my nose rendering me helpless and hungry. Why slave over the stove for an hour when I can just pop right in and have a hearty meal in muh belly for under $10? I'm no fool. My home cooked meal can wait another day. I like to opt for the special of the day which is usually chicken or lamb tangine and sometimes a chicken in a plum sauce dish. Delish on a cold day. I have also tried their falafal, shawarma and salad and yes I'm a fan of them all. The service is always friendly. For some reason, this is the only place where I have left behind a myriad of personal items such as cell phones and wallets, you know things that matter, and on every occasion, they were safely returned to me by the lovely ladies who work there. My wrap was dry and basically 90% lettuce followed by a large black hair i found halfway through. For the price i expected something half decent but our order was below mediocre. I used to live in Ottawa and was spoiled by the abundance of quality Middle Eastern restaurants due to the large Lebanese diaspora population. While Vancouver is known for many excellent cuisines, Lebanese is not one of them. Fortunately, Mitra Canteen bucks the trend and delivers fresh, affordable, Middle Eastern staples like falafels, shawarmas, stuffed grape leaves and delicious hummus. Mitra has less variety than what I'm used to in Ottawa, but the prices more than make up for it. I had the $7.50 falafel plate last night, which included three large falafel balls, rice, salad, hummus, tabouleh and a pita on the side. It was extremely filling, and I couldn't finish it. Where else can you do that for $7.50? The staff are usually very friendly, and they have recently expanded their seating, taking over the shop next door. They would receive five stars if they offered cheese pies, but sadly, they don't. read more

I could only get slammed by the delicious sent of this place so many times while walking by before I had no choice but to try it for myself. Unusually delicious shawarmas and falafels, prepared quickly, at a reasonable price, by friendly people with big smiles. Seating is plentiful, and if you can score a spot facing Main, it makes for some good people-watching, since Mitra is right next door to trendy JJ Bean. The balsamic chicken salad plate is the perfect meal for those looking for a high-protein, low-carb burst. But the vegetarian options are delicious as well. read more

I moved here from Toronto where I was lucky enough to life near a few fantastic Lebanese restaurants (Falafel World and Ali Babas). Mitra's chicken shawarma and falafel ranks right up there and is excellent food at a decent price (Falafel is $6). Having said that, the other day I tried a plate and didn't care much for the rice. So stick to the wraps. When other options in the hood consist of sushi, pizza, coffee shops and pubs, Mitra is a filling and healthy(er) option. I eat there about one a week. Also, they've just renovated and the owner tells me they'll be licensed in time for summer. So soon I'll be sitting in the sun on their small but all-to-critical patio munching on a wrap while sipping a cold tasty brew. The perfect lunch!! It is a good thing the air was filled with a nice spicy aroma because the hobo guy waiting ahead of me in line was working a serious funk! Okay, maybe no prizes will be won for ambiance for this hole in the wall, but the food makes up for it. Compared to some shawarmas that I have had recently, this one was diminutive in size (read: normal portion) but more than made up for it in flavour. They were generous with the hummus and tabouleh which I appreciated. The chicken was cut right off the spit for each wrap which was another plus. The wrapping of the shawarma could have been a bit better because when I pulled back the foil the pita did not surround the filling so it was messy to eat to say the least. I can't say enough good things about this place. It is my go to spot on Main Street for affordable, amazing Mediterranean food made with love. They not only care about their guests they also care about the community at large. The owners make great food and have the biggest hearts. All I can say is go! Chicken shawarma plate is the most amazing thing ever. The chicken is full of flavour, the salad is always fresh, no wilted lettuce or soggy tomatoes. Hate onions so I don't go for the tabbouleh, but the hummus is tasty as heck. I rarely deviate from my usual but I've had the falafel plate a few times, and it's pretty good. Many years I have been a regular at this place; I used to live a 30 second walk away until I moved across the city. I enjoy this place so much I still make the special trip two or three times a month or whenever I'm in the area and need to feed. The owner and his staff are super friendly, and the place is clean and welcoming. Prices are very reasonable and there is good beer on tap. And the shawarma is the best. The folks that run the place are super friendly and check up on you throughout, despite the place pretty much being a fast food joint! I got the chicken shawarma plate and the portion was quite generous! The veggies were all very fresh and the tabouleh helped cleanse your mouth for the meaty journey ahead.
