I knew I was in for a treat the minute I walked in and was immediately greeted with the scent of smoldering firewood and rich spices. From the minimally yet elegantly furnished dining area to the giant live fire Josper rotisserie that easily prices out on par with a brand new, fully equipped 3 series, Mister Pio let's guests know that the food here is serious business. The menu is very simple; several different portion sizes of their freshly roasted and grilled Peruvian chicken, served with a mixed green salad and your choice of two sauces from the three available. Fries come in two sizes and are available as an add-on option, as are a selection of bottled beverages, including Mexican cane sugar Coke and Inca Kola, an interesting looking and tasty Peruvian cola. And that's it! Or at least, that's it for now. I've no doubt that as Mister Pio's popularity grows, it's menu will see some additions, but for right now it's goal is concentrated on offering a truly authentic Peruvian polleria experience and that's something it does VERY well. I opted for the half-chicken size, a portion I knew was going to be too big for me to finish in one sitting, but I wanted to try both the white and dark meat. The chicken was absolutely delicious, cooked perfectly with crisped skin and a succulent juiciness throughout. The flavor of the spice blend, along with the subtle notes of wood smoke worked wonderfully together, with neither component overpowering nor outshining the other. For the sauces, I chose the Aji Verde and the Aji Rocoto, their mild and hot options respectively. Both sauces paired well with the chicken, and the Aji Rocoto definitely had a nice kick to it. The salad was tossed with Aji Amarillo Ginger Vinaigrette, with the greens sourced from local Steadfast Farms in Mesa, and was a nice accompaniment to the richly flavored chicken. I paired the meal with the small order of fries, which was actually a pretty large portion. Mister Pio uses Kennebec potatoes for their fries, which are known, particularly in the culinary world, as being a superior potato for French fries. These were light and fluffy inside, with that satisfyingly crispy crunch on the outside, seasoned with sea salt. Perfection! Altogether, the meal clocked in at $34 before tax, and could have easily fed two people for lunch. I'm very happy to have this spot in the neighborhood, and look forward to seeing Mister Pio become a local treasure. Speaking briefly with the owner and chef, it's clear that his commitment to sourcing the best, high-quality ingredients, with fresh and authentic preparation, is what drives him and his restaurant. On a short vacay in Scottsdale we lucked into finding Mister Pio. Enticing aromas greet you in the parking lot. The menu is simple, and the food is delicious! Staff is courteous and friendly (including, presumably, Mister Pio himself, the grillmaster)! They appear to be just getting started so the space is as yet modestly appointed...but I feel like this place will become legendary one day. It's that tasty! read more

I will add though, that it is VERY expensive for what you're getting. But it's still 5 stars for me because I'm willing to pay for it because it's that good. Tried out Mister Pio the other night on my way home from Old Town. I have spent some time pondering what the answer is for this restaurant to thrive. I am not sure it will survive with the current limited offering at the current pricing. Don't get me wrong...the chicken is very good. It is juicy and well seasoned. The fries were good as well. The med spicy sauce was so so, but the chicken is good enough to carry the show w/o it. The side salad is just greens with a light citrusy vinaigrette. The issue is a half chicken costs $29 + $5 for a small fry is $34. If you go 1/2 mile away to Doughbird you can get a whole rotisserie chicken with choice of sauce, a large ceasar salad, a large side of choice of Mac n cheese, broccoli, mashed potatoes w/gravy. It is designed to feed a family of 4 ppl and is priced at $39. This is only offered for to go. It is packed up in nice plastic containers which can be reused. Doughbird delivers a very good chicken and the sides are excellent as well. So although Mister Tio's is delivering a great rotisserie chicken, it is just not competitive at this price. It's hard to justify. The need to figure out how to deliver at a lower price point, and I am not alone thinking this, I was there on a Friday night at 6:15 pm, waited for my order for 10 minutes and only saw 2 other people coming in. I hope they can figure it out, because it is darn good chicken. read more

Took awhile for me to figure out but basically this place is for the people that haven't had great rotisserie chicken experience from other parts of the world. The chicken is good. That's what happens when you do it rotisserie style. The spices? Meh. The prices are INSANE for what is being offered. Menu is very limited. The chicken is amazing and sauces wonderful, though my favorite was the medium spicy. The chicken doesn't need any sauce though but get it any way as it's great for dipping their yummy fries. The salad was a nice refreshing complement to the meal. The staff was super friendly when ordering and serving the food and the chef/cook (maybe owner) came by to check on our meal. My mother and I came in here craving pollo a la brasa as we missed it having not been to Perú in a few years. Our first bite was like being transported immediately back to Lima and we couldn't stop talking about how good it was. The chicken was juicy, tender, and tasted phenomenal; the fries were crispy and a beautiful golden brown color. We loved everything down to the side salad and the delicious salsas it came with :) (the rocoto one was my favorite!!) We also had the extreme pleasure of speaking with the masterminds behind Mister Pio, and their warm and welcoming demeanor made the experience that much more worthwhile. It was obvious how much care they put into this place and how much they value their customers, their food is a testament to that. I'm going to give 3 bc they have Inca Cola. But....it was $5 effin dollars. The price of this chicken is out of the universe. I get that the owner has to cover his expenses every month but it's a bad business plan to open up near Arcadia and charge $30 for a half bird AND 5$ more for fries. Crazy. If you're a baller then the Peruvian Chicken is worth it. It's just too expensive for me. Move to Tempe or Mesa or even to the Avenues. It's unjustifiably expensive. I'd rather spend 2 dollars of gas to travel. It was very clean and welcoming. If they lower their prices the line will be out the door like El Pollo Rico in Arlington, Virginia. read more

I agree w/the other reviews...this is WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY OVERPRICED. Had the 1/4 chicken which is just a small leg and small thigh. $15. The chickens here are small. Think smaller than Costco rotisserie. Lots of tendons and cartilage. It was also lukewarm and the skin wasn't crispy. The spices were decent. The "hot" dipping sauce came in too small a thimble sized cup and wasn't great or hot. You can choose mild/medium/hot. I suspect my portion had been off the spit for awhile. The "market salad" ($5 upgrade) was good - lots of beets, but not worth the $5 upcharge, and certainly not worth $16 on its own as an entree w/no protein. These guys were trying to charge $6 for a grocery-store brand of bottled water! Wow! As much as I support mom & pop shops, and I enjoyed meeting the owner, who seems very passionate about Peru and the rotisserie and (as he said) "fine dining (which this isn't but priced as such)," this simply won't last. read more
