Nobody's perfect- the hiccup. Mini Garden Express has been a long time favorite and I would always dutifully bring home minute chicken with Choi sum for da wife and won ton soup for me whenever I was coming home from the west side. Always consistent with a reasonable price, you couldn't go wrong with an order from this 99 Market mainstay. Then comes a recent meal from Mini Garden. One order, won ton mein soup, one won ton with with gravy. Both were very bland but had the unmistakable flavoring of msg. Hard to get that combination of no taste with msg seasoning. Part of the problem appeared to be the noodles- seems like they scooped out the noodles from the boiling water and dropped in quite a bit of excess water into both the gravy order and the soup order. Both had a bland taste. Surprisingly, the soft wun ton was not tasty either. Very disappointed. But- I'm hoping this was a hiccup and does not reflect what they are normally able to do. It was busy so they may have been rushed. Nevertheless, be aware even this place, which is usually quite consistent, can be off. read more

Mini Garden Express is a new version of the Mini Garden used to be located at the 99 Ranch which is now a Home Depot. I have been a customer of Mini Garden for over 20 years and their food ranging from roasted duck, char shui, won ton mein, to variety of chow mein and chow fun are always genuinely delicious. My favorite dishes include choysum beef chow fun, mini chicken chow mein and char shui and chicken rice covered with ginger green onions just to name a few. The price is very reasonable and the portions are always satisfying. Many of my friends go there too. read more

The food here is very good. I would go to Mini Garden Express again & again) solely on the merits of the food, in particular their noodle dishes. Up and down their menu, everything that is a noodle dish is *solidly* reliable. Portion size was also far better than average for Chinese take out with reference to early 2024. The fu-yeung dishes are a wee greasy and we will pass on these next time. Bottom line, I will be going back to Mini Garden solely for the quality and quantity of their food. If I want to be treated nicely I'll cross the parking lot and patronize Joe's Grill Express. read more

This is my favorite Chinese takeout on Oahu. Anything I order is super yummy. All their dishes are flavorful. Their minute chicken crispy noodle is the best. I've tried other places but none compare. Today I ordered congee with preserved egg, their crispy noodle, Choi sum, and sweet and sour pork. I wish I had ordered duck too because I could smell it. Oh well. I'll order that next time. I wish they had dim sum, walnut prawns, jong (sticky rice with egg and meat in banana leaves), bao but what they have is good. The ladies servicing customers there have a sharp tongue but it doesn't bother me. It's part of their culture. I'm never disappointed when I come here. Previously located in the former 99 Ranch, they are now located near the airport. I actually like the new location better. They're still as busy as ever and they're one of our favorite places to pick up lunch for our office. The service always sounds rushed but these ladies know what they're doing. They always remember us and are super sweet when you get to know them. Food always comes out quick and I haven't had anything I don't like. Some of our favorites are the ginger chicken, roast duck (sometimes you get the boney pieces but the flavor is good), shrimp wonton noodle soup, and the minute chicken with cake noodle. Maybe I should have stuck with the crispy noodles (cake noodles) type dishes. Tried Orange Chicken and Crispy Roast Pork today. Was pretty disappointed. Orange chicken was ok we asked for it as a plate (with rice) but received ala carte. Sauce was separate which is good since we were taking it home and kept the chicken crispy. Nothing fancy just tiny chunks of chicken battered and fried tried a piece plain and was meh. Sauce was ok more like sweet sour (not like a panda express orange chicken). Ala carte Crispy Roast pork was the worst. Very greasy overcooked look and tasted old like it has been refried to get crisp again. Color was very dark not like the normal golden brown Roast pork most Chinese restaurants have hanging. Didnt finish it but can't waste either so probably make sarisari or pork squash soup. Sorry this made me very disappointed and this is my Aunty favorite place when they are near. I probably won't be back unless something we have takes us right next to the building rather go down the road more to Lagoon Chinese! read more

Mini garden has some of the best chinese food on the island. I was a frequent visitor when they were located in the old Ranch 99 food court. Their new location offers more seating and the quality remains excellent. You can't go wrong with any noodle dish, but my favorites are the stewed noodles. My go-to toppings are the special gau gee and the beef brisket. The minute chicken with crispy noodles and the won ton min are other must haves. Atop of all this, the aunties always have lollipops for the keiki, a small but much appreciated gesture that makes the food taste even better. read more

Still exploring and it's always a good thing where a serendipitous tip for a lunch spot one day can take you places you didn't know existed - in your own hometown. Case in point: Mini Garden Express. I don't usually come to explore this area of Honolulu often. Probably rarely at best, but as it turns out, it was cool to see. One of my co-workers graciously offered to drive me to the airport for an afternoon flight to the US East Coast. In exchange, I offered to buy him lunch. He asked if I was okay with Chinese food and he would call ahead to place an order. I was like alright cool okay. As long as they accept credit cards, which they do- but they have a $5.00 minimum charge. I ended up spending $20.00. We arrived here at around 12:30pm on a casual Thursday afternoon after a whirlwind morning at the office, trying to get last minute loose ends tied up before I fly. Mini Garden Express is among a cluster of small eateries housed in a former airline hangar, or at least that's what I think it is. Its a big cafeteria setting with many tables and chairs for people to eat and sit down. Much like The Lanai at Ala Moana shopping center, but this place doesn't seem to have free WiFi or at least strong central air conditioning, but it was comfortable and cozy. We ended up making it a take out affair, since I needed to get to the airport and my co-worker needed to get back to the office within 45 minutes. For the most part though, Chinese cuisine before a evening of flying seemed to do the trick. The overall experience here at Mini Garden Express was quick and nice. I was told that it was quicker to phone it in and pick up rather than ordering at the counter, which can take 20 minutes. Good points for next time I'm in the area. I initially wanted cold ginger chicken, but noticed that they have chow fun too. I figured I mixed the two together. What came out was basically a chow fun plate with 5 pieces of ginger chicken and a lot of sauce that they use with the chow fun dish. I would have thought the chow fun would have been way less - in proportion to the rice in a typical plate lunch scenario, but it was 85% of it. It is what it is but it was actually delicious and a departure to what I usually have during lunch on the weekdays. Mini Garden Express is located at 4444 Main Street in the heart of Mapunpuna. It's about a 5-7 minute drive to the Daniel K Inouye International airport, which was excellent. You can pick up lunch or dinner here before heading to the airport for your flight without having to pay airport prices. As aforementioned before, they accept major credit cards, but currently have a $5.00 minimum purchase. On this trip to Mini Garden, I came here by private vehicle. I suspect in future trips, I would arrive here by public transit. With that said, if you are like me, bus routes A, 3, and a handful of other routes pass through the area and makes a stop across the street. I do like the casual ambiance of the cafeteria style seating after you purchase your food. The cafeteria area is large enough to have a nice meal here. I'm sure I would be back here to check out more of Mini Garden Express and other restaurant vendors in the building. If you are in the area and love Chinese cuisine, consider checking this place out. What can be a serendipitous encounter may just be the perfect lunch spot you needed at the time. Yup. This place was perfect for me on 8/29/2019 and I suspect more times in the future. Definitely recommended. Make sure you look at the photos of the menu before you call in. It helps to check it out instead of wasting time in line. 4.0 stars for the overall experience. 5.0 stars for the quick fast food experience. 3.0 stars for the prices. Small whole in the wall Chinese restaurant within Ranch 99 food court. The food here are pretty cheap for the portion they give. I ordered the roast pork and roast duck with fried rice combo for $11. The roast port were thin sliced, but very flavorful. The roast duck tasted like a typical roast duck, but to me, what makes it delicious is the delicious sauce that usually comes with it. This place doesn't have such a sauce. The female worker there stated that I wouldn't need it because it's delicious....I think I needed the sauce lol. My overall experience was ok. Typical food court style establishment. There are a lot of parking and tables to eat on. There are a lot of other food establishments to choose from in this area. read more

Mini Garden in Mapunapuna (the old Ranch 99) is one of my favorite places to go for a fast reasonable chinese food. Wide variety, very tasty food and fast service! Lots of parking available at no cost. Always a line for lunch but it moves quickly. Business hours are 10:00 - 7:00 so check them out for lunch or dinner..you won't be disappointed! I like mini garden. I gave it five stars not necessarily because it's the highest of cuisine but in the area that it's in, surrounded by other food places there are solid consistent deliver of stuff that will fill you up so you can continue your day. The staff are not local, so speak slowly and clearly in that way there will be no problems. Ask for napkins and how many chopsticks and or forks you want. Depending on the time you go you may have to wait up to 10 minutes which, all things considered, is not bad. The food tastes decent every time I've ever gone and it is filling so I don't know what else to say for it except go there and eat. Now that Wah Kung is gone it's nice to find semi decent Chinese food somewhere not too far from where you live. read more

Not gonna lie, I came here cause I had also thought Ranch 99 was still here. When I rolled up to "MOANALUA 99", The Roomie asked, "uh is Moanalua Hawaiian for Ranch?" (The Roomie is the most amazing and hilarious being I know). Side note: I'm also on the mainland 90% of the year so I have no idea what's going on half the time with businesses back at home. At any rate, bummed no more Ranch 99 but I was really in the mood for cake noodle. Like, would've killed for it. So Daddy had sent us here for possible market shopping and for definite cake noodling. This place was probably the most busy restaurant?/kiosk? in the plaza amongst all the other stands. The line was confusing due to the whole 6ft social distancing, couldn't really tell where the line started/ended and who was waiting for their food. We ordered food for 4 of us + order of ginger chicken for later, and it came out to about $55 bucks. Not bad! I got my minute chicken cake noodle in my greedy hands and we went home (about 20 minutes trip) to eat it. IT. WAS. ONO. We don't have cake noodle on the mainland (SOB) and I was the happiest person with that takeout container just chomping away. I would come up to Moanalua 99 again just for this cake noodle next time I'm at home. As for the rest of the fam: brother got the fish fried rice which was a special (brother: "it was okay....kind of dry), The Roomie got chicken with CRISPY noodle (The Roomie: "I liked it...but I think we can get this on the mainland), and Daddy got the oyster sauce chicken cake noodle (Daddy: "Good! Becareful when ordering the crispy gau gee with cake noodle. The order received had only 4 gau gee and one was sooooo burnt the pork inside barely existed and was burnt hard and dry. That was disappointing since it was not busy at that time. They just didn't watch the gau gee when cooking and gave burnt ones since it was take out and in a small bag.
