Waiakamilo Shopping Center is an open-air strip mall with McDonald's and Firestone on the Dillingham Boulevard end and bars at the mauka (mountain) side. There are many bars here: Club Lilac, Club Eclipse, and Club Lucky Frog... to name a few. I haven't been to any of these... LOL! I have been to Original Pancake House, Lucky Box Restaurant, and Ha Long Pho Noodle House. There's a veterinary clinic and a liquor store that I haven't patronized. I didn't even realize that there was a second level on the mauka end! There are many exits and entrances - one on each end (Dillingham Boulevard and Kaumualii Street) and about three along the length of Waiakamilo Road. Just drive slowly and carefully... Be safe out there!

The Manager there said that they do not have the proper equipment to mount lower profile tires. "We can still do it but your rim may get scratched or damaged". Of course I didn't agree to this and ended up having to put the tires in my trunk and leave. Such a limit in services (low profile tires are not at all rare) is already bad enough from a National Tire Shop. What made it all so worse was but they didn't tell me this until I was there for my installation appointment. Why didn't they work with Tire Rack ahead of time so Firestone wouldn't come up for installation for low profile tires? Also when Firestone received my tires, why didn't they let me know they couldn't install it. Instead, they completing my reservation both online and on the phone. After all, they had my tires for over a week before my appointment day. Or at the very latest, at least when I had checked in that morning and not after waiting an hour when my car actually was going into the repair bay for installation!

This Shopping Center is probably most known for Safeway. We visited because of Sakura Restaurant. I had a gift certificate from an Instagram Contest in which First Hawaiian Bank collaborated with small businesses such as Sakura Restaurant. Sakura is a stand-alone business. Everything else is like a strip mall. Luckily, Irene M. knew her way around. We walked over towards Subway, passed Super Cuts and Po Sing Chinese Restaurant, and saw a nail shop around the corner, past Meet Tea. It looks like this Shopping Center has some vacant space. I wonder what was here and what's coming...

What an awesome weekend to be able to see a YouTuber (Raina) whom I've watched on YouTube. Raina…read morewas there to be in a hamburger eating contest hosted by Oh Me Grill at the McCully Shopping Center. There was a total of 9 participants including Raina. Of course, she won the eating contest. Raina ate 10 hamburgers in 5 minutes. Each participant receive a $20 gift card per hamburger eaten which was pretty good. Raina was the with Lovely Mimi whom brought the crowd to live with all her energy. After the contest, we got to take pictures with Raina and Lovely Mimi. I was able to have them autograph hubby's hat since he could not make it. They were giving away signed tote bag and stickers to the first 100 people.

Jollibee is the most prominent tenant, followed by Jiffy Lube on the Dillingham Boulevard side, and 7-Eleven on the King Street side. There are two entrances - one on each side of the property. Note that there's no left turn out from the King Street side... and - no left turn out from the Dillingham Boulevard side. The traffic pattern is basically: enter from Dillingham Boulevard and exit onto King Street. (Although you can enter from King Street... Just drive slowly!) I have shopped at the Dillingham T-shirt Outlet and S7 Icy Bubble (for Cony merchandise). I've gotten takeout from Shiggy's and S7 Icy Bubble. I've dined at Jollibee. Watch out for the sketchy characters hanging around. They're actually everywhere, so... Always be cautious - wherever you are!

I stopped by today to go to one of my favorite dumpling places, Paul's Poppers. It is the only business that I have been to here. I used to go to the KFC that used to be here. Unfortunately, KFC is no longer here. One place that I definitely have to check out is Jollibee! It's relatively new and believe it or not I have never had any of their food! I can't wait to finally try something from there. Besides the street level parking lot, Kingsgate Plaza also has an underground lot. The parking lots are rather small compared to larger malls, so it can take a little maneuvering to get a stall sometimes.

We'd go to the restaurant every so often and would cross the street to Manoa Marketplace (MM) to shop. Opened in 1972, MM is a complex conveniently located in the heart of Manoa with multiple businesses, such as Safeway, Longs, McDonald's, and a whole bunch of eateries. There's also a post office and a laundromat on premises. MM also boasts a farmers market that is held on Tue, Thu and Sun from 7am to 2pm in the courtyard plaza. I've had fond memories of dining at Paesano, which had an impressive run from 1992 and sadly closed their doors earlier this year in Feb 2026. I came here with family and foodie friends so many times where it was in our rotation of restaurants to patronize. Lately I've been dining at both Lady Elaine and Little Plum. They are factors which lure me back to MM. Overall, MM is a great place for people who live in Manoa to shop, dine and their daily tasks. A short ride from downtown area is Manoa a lovely lush spot that seems to take you away from the towering building of condos and hustle where is much quieter and greener as well. With that Manoa Marketplace is a place that you can pretty much do it all with Safeway for groceries, CPB for banking, various foodies spots, Bakeries, Manapua and even a USPS and so much more yes all that and free parking galore. They also have a Farmers Market every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7am-2pm along with various services available here you're able to get so much done in one location is what really makes it great. I usually park in a specific section with the Cookie Corner, Jersey Mikes, and California Pizza Kitchen right out front. A family gathering at Fun Factory will usually mean a stop also for a glass of wine before and after a pickup if bag of cookies . Doesn't get any easier. Huge parking accessibility for fast in and out and a huge Times Supermarket. I will drive to Mililani rather than stopping at Pearl Ridge for those reasons but it's a definite stop on my way around the island.

This small shopping mall sits between Aina Haina shopping center in Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai Towne Center & Koko Marina center in Hawaii Kai. It's a quaint little strip mall, anchored by a church, 7-Eleven convience store, and the Jack in the Box along Kalanianaole Highway. You may miss it if you're not looking for it, but it is a shopping hub, that's basically a food / restaurant stop for anyone and everyone who needs to stop here and pick up daily necessities. With that said, the Niu Valley shopping center isn't really a shopping center, just a collection of restaurants that come together to bring the community some variety in between Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai just so you don't have to travel too far into town to get what you need. I've come here twice already in the year 2020 just to check things out in the area. I noticed a couple of new additions in 2020 April, especially a new Vietnamese restaurant called "Pho Time" as well as two Japanese restaurants, called Café Asia and Gyotaku. Jack in the Box fast food restaurant has been around the property as far as I can remember - as well as the King's Chapel church. The 7-Eleven conveience store has been around for a solid number of years too. If you pass this strip mall, you're missing on a lot of potentially good eats here in east Oahu. The overall experience here at the Niu Valley shopping center can be described as underwhelming at best. While the shopping center is very much open air, it does lack that certain appeal when it comes to closed air conditioned shopping mall venues like Pearlridge shopping center and Kahala Mall, to name a few on the island. I arrived here around 1pm on separate occassions on April 2020 searching for cheap eats. The first time I discovered for the first time - Pho Time, which I assumed is relatively brand new or at least 6 months new. I can be sure that I'll be back to try this place when this pandemic is contained. Both experiences here on a Sunday afternoon seemed to be dead at best, but at least there was a few people roaming about and there was parked cars and a line of cars snaking through the Jack in the Box drive thru lane. Signs of life here on a weekend is nice, especially during a crisis. It was still quiet though, albeit eerie to see. Everything was take out only, but at least the restaurants were open. Just can't sit down and dine in though. Even the King's Church was closed for services. I'm sure it's like that across the island. You probably woudn't think it is a shopping center if you were crusing on by Kalanianaole Highway, but it's here open for your business. Come on by if you are in the area. The good thing about Niu Valley shopping center is that there is plenty of parking stalls here. Plenty for y'all to go shopping and your take out meals during this phase of year 2020. Since services for King's Church won't be held for a while, you can come here on the way home or on the way to work to pick up lunches or dinners whenever you can during this "stay-at-home" quarantine we have in place since March 25, 2020. I'm so grateful that many restaurants are open for take-out to help the community through this tough uncertain time we all are facing. I guess what makes us stronger will help us carry through this ordeal and onward to better days ahead. For me though, the shopping center doesn't feel like a real mall. Just a couple of buildings that is home to a few restaurants and a big parking lot, along with a church within a residential area and Kalanianaole Highway. While not a contemporary shopping center that you know and love like Ala Moana or even Hawaii Kai Towne Center, Niu Valley shopping center serves the community surrounding it without having to travel too far for basic stuff for everyday living. I know I spent about an hour here buying my meals while I was here and checking out the restaurants I plan on coming back to when this pandemic is more under control and we can do siit down dining again. 4.0 stars for the overall experience. 3.0 stars for the asthetic appeal, but the community needs are there. I am glad that there is a Vietnamese restaurant I can come to that I haven't tried yet near home. Support local! B
