My favorite sushi spot in the East Bay, it's consistently delicious!! I wish they accepted reservations.

We arrived and didn't have to wait very long for a table of 5. We were greeted and given ample time to review the menu and place our order. It was a Saturday night so we weren't sure about wait times but they aren't accepting reservations so we knew we might have to wait. We ordered the seasoned and garlic edamame while we waited for our rolls to be prepared. We ordered a rainbow roll, a Marilyn monroll, an incredible roll, a sakekawa roll and a fair oaks roll. We also ordered a chicken katsu dinner. The garlic edamame I really enjoyed and my husband liked the spicy edamame. The rolls were fresh and the place was quite busy so I can understand how it was difficult to get the attention of our server. We asked for extra ginger and spicy mayo a few times but overall a good experience. Some of the larger rolls are higher priced which gives you an indicator as to how healthy in size the roll is when you order. read more

My absolute favorite rolls from any sushi place I've ever gone to, always great customer service. Lunch this past Saturday was a little disappointing. Everything took a while and food wasn't completely the same. Probably under staffed but here is our experience. We asked for a table outside and it took about 30 min which isn't bad. Even though they had a couple empty tables, they probably didn't have enough host to attend the table. Once we ordered, it took another 30 minutes before we got any of our food. We ordered our appetizer and meal at the same time. Glad we did considering how long it took. Though, our server was nice. We were able to catch him around when we needed assistance. We typically get the bento boxes and a couple rolls. Everything was good but the batter on the tempura and chicken karaage was different. It's been awhile since I've been at Mikuni's and I'm glad they added an outdoor seating! They tend to get really busy and the additional seating is nice. They also have heat warmers. The service was really nice and attentive. My boyfriend and I started with drinks: the lotus shock and the raspberry lemonade (titos). The lotus shock was really fun since it came with the flower that makes your mouth tingly. For apps, garlic edamame and the daikon hamachi. The garlic edamame is honestly soooo good; well seasoned and delicious. The daikon hamachi was just meh. I've honestly had better hamachi and didn't care for it as much. The rolls we ordered were really good though. We got the DMC and Kaiser roll; I give the DMC a solid 6.5 and the Kaiser roll an 8! The DMC is good, I just don't really care for the soy wrapper. The Kaiser roll was yummy and had a lot of texture. This place is pretty expensive, but the rolls were HUGE! It's nice to know this place is still doing well and has great food. read more

Lunch menu is available every day until 4 PM!! Decent pricing if you're a bento/entree person. I was shocked to see how big the portion sizes are too. The menu is big and can feel overwhelming.. same vibes as Cheesecake Factory. I like a variety but sometimes I just don't want that many options to add to my already high mental load. I opted for the beef curry plate, and added a chicken cutlet for $4. You get what you pay for, cause the cutlet was pretty thin and dry. The beef in the curry was really tender, but the veggies (potato and carrot) could have been cooked a little softer for my liking. This was huge and could feed 2, even if you didn't get anything else to share. This does not come in spice levels unfortunately, so the curry is mild at best. I am a spicy curry girl, so it just doesn't hit the spot the way I'd like. The curry was flavorful and rich enough though, and would be great on a cold day. I also ordered 2 sushi rolls.. cause that's how I roll lololol They have raw and non raw sections. I can appreciate that they're separated for the readers. I wish the menu had more pictures because a visual just helps. Our waitress was super nice and checked on us like 3x after we sat down, but I was like dang, you gave me a novel so I'm just gonna need a min here. FYI- all the decent sounding rolls are gonna be closer to the $20 spectrum. We ordered the davis roll and japanese mafia roll. Both were delicious but presentation was just okay. Taste is what really matters though. The davis roll was fresh, and had nice thicc slices of fish on top. If you like rolls that are more on the saucy end, go with the japanese mafia roll. It has all the creaminess of a baked roll, but less messy as it's only torched. The rolls were a good size, and not overly rice heavy. FYI- If you have a kid, agree to a kid's menu as their menu is a coloring page w/crayons! Nice little activity to keep the kiddos busy while you try to enjoy your meal. They now have outdoor seating in the front of the resto, for a more al fresco dining experience. Advise to come during non peak hours as they do get pretty busy. read more

Mikuni has really gone downhill. We have been there several times for birthday dinners but this last time was a disappointment. Everything had too much sauce and the rolls all started tasting the same. The DMC Roll ($27) is a lobster tempura, avocado crab mix but all we could taste was the rice and sauce. When we brought it to the attention of our waitress, she said management said to tell them next time. - Sorry but there won't be a next time. We had a party of 6 and the bill was $230. Happened to be in the area and decided to try for lunch. I was very excited to give Mikuni a shot after hearing great reviews. The location (in general for Veranda shops and not just Mikuni) is easy to access but parking can be a nightmare. Plan to give yourself 5-10 minutes to grab a spot. I can't even say to park far away as most stalls are taken all over! The restaurant has a general L-shape layout with bar area to the immediate right and seating along the rectangular side to the back wall. Ample space and we were seated pretty quickly (again, this has to do with timing and peak vs non-peak hours) Regarding food, I did not find a single dish to stand out. I spoke to friends afterwards who said I didn't order any of the right things so perhaps the options were not their best that we selected. Nonetheless, we ordered two Bentos (one chicken karaage and one chicken teriyaki) and a side roll of spicy tuna. Both bento's were not very neatly presented, the side salad was doused with an overly sweet dressing and the California rolls were coming undone as we grabbed them with our chopsticks. Lastly, the spicy tuna roll was bland to the taste and the brussel sprouts were overly charred and had an off-putting taste. With the amount of competition around for sushi and Japanese cuisine, I was surprised the execution wasn't better. Food is always delicious here! The service is great and staff are friendly. We came on a Friday night and sat outdoors. Although we were outdoors, we sat by heaters -- which kept us warm -- and a plus side to being outdoors is that we could hear the live DJ playing 90s/00s hip-hop and R&B music. I mean- the aesthetics speak for itself. I was seated immediately & drinks were brought out quickly. Food on the menu was hard to choose from because there were a lot of good and different options. But I went ahead and ordered Gyoza/short ribs/Sesame chicken for appetizers. Shorts ribs- could've been better seasoned but it was ok. Gyoza- got them crispy and they were good. Sesame chicken- it was dry, not very well seasoned. I got myself chicken teriyaki with white rice and salad on the side paired with Sushi rolls. The parking here absolutely sucks, it probably is the worst parking I've experienced in concord. However, if you can find a park, you can put your name on the list. Delicious dinner at Mikuni at the Veranda. We went on Saturday night and the place was packed. Luckily the bar is open seating and we were able to grab a spot. They don't take reservations and we were quoted over an hour wait on Saturday around 7PM so plan to get here on the earlier side to put your name in. They have QR codes for menus. My husbands phone had a hard time pulling it up so we were provided hard menus which is always nice to flip through. They have a full bar and delicious looking drinks. The food came out pretty quickly and seemed really fresh. Everything was also good portion size. Going to expensive sit down restaurants is not something I do often. I used to pass by the one in Davis all the time and roll my eyes because you can find good sushi at the Davis sushi buffets for cheap. BUT now that I'm older and can afford stuff, I happened to try this out. I even brought my parents who are hesitant trying new things, let alone expensive things. But we all enjoyed our time at the Concord Mikuni's. The space feels fancy and trendy. The food was all pretty good. I was expecting to not like one or two of the rolls I ordered, but they were all winners. The stuffed mushroom appetizer might be my favorite thing of all time. And don't get me started on that lychee cocktail -- heaven in a glass (and I don't even drink!). The staff are super nice but it is sometimes hard getting their attention since it gets so busy. I don't know if they're just understaffed or if they're overworking their staff. Minus one for this. Hot tips: If you wanna spin the birthday wheel, you'll need to come in either the day before, on, or the day after your actual birthday. Be sure to bring ID! Come early to find parking. I remember Mikuni from 20+ years ago when I was up in the Sacramento area and I really enjoyed it then. I am glad to see they are doing well and expanding their restaurant locations and have this one in Concord! We stopped in for a lunch on a Tuesday. I like their location in The Veranda, it's a nice place to walk around! It wasn't busy yet so we were seated immediately. I got a lunch special (Sushi Illustrated) which had a variety of sushi from 3 different rolls, my wife got the chirashi bowl, and the kiddo got a children's bento with shrimp tempura and California roll. All the food was good and was all gobbled up. The fish was fresh and good portion on the chirashi bowl. The only thing I was a bit bummed about was that with the selection of sushi rolls, it was hard to find something that wasn't spicy- spicy seemed to be on most of the maki rolls (though it seems there is a better variety on the dinner menu) and there are microgreens (which I don't really care for) on a ton of rolls as well. I guess this kind of thing can be expected, as they do brand as being Japanese with American influence, so perhaps just catering to the American taste profile. My friend and I decided to have lunch here today because the ambiance looks good and the food in the menu looked interesting. We ordered bunch of starters to share and salmon lunch plate. The mushroom starter was really good! We also liked the sushi soft shell crab that my friend ordered. The steamed clams tho tasted old like it was cooked last night and it didn't taste fresh at all. Also, it was in a very small portion. The bbq white tuna was so dry and there's disgusting white thing that came out from the fish and it was bland so we had to return it to them. I gave another shot with salmon lunch plate but it was also dry when it came. It's just not tasty at all and I feel like it's not fresh. I know this is a food chain but they have to make their food good at least how it's presented in their website photos. I have been wanting to go here for a long time but parking has made it difficult to try this place out. Finally came for lunch and arrived early enough to find parking. I was a little disappointed because it did not live up to the hype. We ordered original edamame and they didn't even salt it. The chicken karaage was delicious but small. I ordered the incredible roll and sushi illustrated combo. The portions for these were actually more than I anticipated. Only downside for me were all four rolls tasted very similar but yummy. This is my go to- order Appetizer: - freaky edamame: spicy but not too spicy - flaming shrooms: Omg so good. Deep fried, stuffed mushrooms. Drinks: Dragonberry Mojito: they also have a pitcher that serves about 4-5 glasses Sushi: Trainwreck roll: if you want to be wowed try the train wreck roll. It's one of their most notorious rolls and the price is justifiable bc of how good it is. I also ask for a side of siracha bc I love the spicy-ness it adds. Carmen roll: so yummy and baked! I usually come for Happy Hour when the prices are more reasonable. Large indoor area and outdoor area which is nice to sit in with nicer weather. Servers are getting younger and younger these days! I love ordering the following - Flaming shrooms - 9/10 - BBQ White tuna app- 9/10 (wish they gave more) - Puff Daddy - creamy and delish - 8/10 - albacore appetizer Other basic rolls are pretty basic tasting so I don't order rolls except a few hand rolls. I usually don't like giving reviews like this but this place is horrible. This place was packed and the ambiance was really nice so we decided to give it a go. Service was ok but waiter didn't give us any plates for our apps. Walked by twice and still failed to recognize the issue. Tempura in my rolls were made from panko batter instead of the fluffy tempura batter. The shrimp tempura from the appetizer looked like as if it was from Costco and just reheated in an airfryer. Everything was drenched in sauce which just overpowered the food. I didn't get any wasabi or sauce plate for my sashimi. When I finally asked for it, it was this nasty watery texture. Teriyaki chicken was dry and bland. For the price Mikuni is charging, the qualify definitely should have been better. I definitely would not come back here even if I was craving Japanese food. Mikuni's will always be one of my main go-to spots for sushi. I started going to the Downton Sacramento, Arden, and Elk Grove locations frequently when I lived in Sacramento. When I moved back to the East Bay I definitely missed it so I was estatic to have a location in Concord. I dont have complaints on the service but it was definitely busy and possibly understaffed with servers. The sushi bar was slow with the rolls but it was fine, we had the other items we ordered to keep us full. The chicken Katsu was good but relatively bland (and the sauce it came with wasnt as flavorful as when you order it from cheaper places like L&L). It was me and my partner's first time odering this dish from here and we both said that we'll skip it in the future. The veggie/ship tempura was good. The illegal asparagus was cool, I prefer the freaky brussels though. Keep in mind that when they say small plates they really do mean small / tapa style. My partner enjoyed his ninety-nine roll and I loved my fair oaks roll with jalapenos and shichimi on top (if you're a spice lover I definitely recommend adding shichimi to the top of your rolls). When I first started visiting Mikuni I also enjoyed the Marilyn Monroll subbing spicy tuna in place of the crab mix (I dont like fake crab). You honestly cant go wrong with any roll though, it's based on your preferences. I've been to Mikuni's with groups and everyone has always enjoyed their food. The rolls are a little more pricey than other places but in my opinion the quality is also better. They have a pretty nice cocktail menu too and in the past the other locations have been accommodating with custom requests, I'm sure that this location is no different. Try the Lychee Shock with the umami button. Parking is typically easy because it's in the Veranda but on weekends and during holiday season it can become a little more difficult so arrive early to find a spot. I do wish they took reservations but they're walk-in only except for at the bar. Maybe stop in to ask about wait times and get your name on the list, then walk around to visit other businesses in the vacinity until your table is ready. One random note: Their spicy mayo is really good. Try it even if you dont enjoy mayo. They were so nice about letting my try their different sauces so I can make informed decisions both on this visit and future ones. read more

And even though Ive stated multiple time can we get our food we are going to a movie at 220 it's now 248 and I'm waiting on ONE hand roll. It should not take twenty minutes. Especially it was done wrong the first time. Just because they look like chicken nuggets, doesn't mean it will still be good. Tempura green beans a little spicy and not for small kids. They were playing a movie that has a guy bleeding out his chest and first time my 5 year old son saw that. They changed it after like 10 seconds too late.
