We tucked into The Grove (with reservations) on a rainy Friday for an early dinner. Despite having three menus - drinks, dinner, and happy hour - choosing what to order didn't feel overwhelming, and we quickly landed on the anchovy toast, beet salad, shrimp & grits, and mushroom risotto. Our server was incredibly friendly, and the entire room shared the same warm, easygoing vibe. The small, speakeasy themed space was already packed at 5 PM, so reservations seem like a must. Everything we ordered was well-prepared and delicious, but the standout dishes were the beet salad and the shrimp & grits. The beet salad had a perfect mix of textures; chopped pistachios, tender beets, and crunchy radishes over a pillowy ricotta. I finished the salad wishing there was more. The shrimp & grits featured a potlikker sauce that absolutely lived up to the hype; it made the dish. I wish the shrimp & grits were served in a bowl rather than a shallow dish. I found myself chasing the sauce and polenta around the plate, trying not to push it over the edge. That said, if it were in a bowl, I might have just drank the sauce, so perhaps this is the restaurant's way of preserving a bit of dignity for its guests. I've been meaning to check this place out since they opened, and finally made it in today--worth the wait. It absolutely lives up to the hype. The vibe is effortlessly chill, with whimsical decor--think antique lamps, an old record player, and lots of little details that make you want to look around. The whole place felt alive in the best way--buzzing with conversation, laughter, and people clearly having a great time. We didn't have a reservation, but lucked out with seats at the community table. Bonus: the other guests were super welcoming, which just added to the fun, communal feel. We hit happy hour, and wow--it's a good one. Tons of interesting bites and a solid drink lineup. I went with a whiskey sour, my friend had the ginger beer on draft (very refreshing), and we shared the prawns, Brussels sprouts, and creamy mac & cheese. Everything was seriously delicious. Shoutout to our server, Melanie--friendly, attentive, and totally on it, even with the place packed. A couple things to note: it does get loud, so maybe not your spot if you're after a quiet, intimate dinner. Also, the happy hour menu listed Brussels sprouts but didn't mention bacon--I'm vegetarian, so that was a bit of a surprise. (It is noted on the regular dinner menu, which I admittedly didn't check.) After a trip to the coast, this ended up being our return stop... and what a way to land the plane. Walked in and instantly got welcomed like I'd been coming here for years. This is a drinking establishment that just so happens to be out here absolutely disrespecting people with how good the food is. The fish tacos? Ridiculous. The mac and cheese? Also ridiculous. Like "hold on, why is this THIS good?" kind of ridiculous. I fully expected decent bar food and instead got slapped in the taste buds with flavor. One bite in and I was like, "Whaaaat is happening right now?" That kind of surprise is rare and beautiful. The vibe inside was cool, laid-back, and exactly what you want after a coast run--good energy, welcoming people, and the kind of place that makes you want to stay longer than you planned. We were in town for our son's graduation at SSU. The ceremony was in the morning so we were looking for a nice brunch lunch spot on our way out of town after. This is such a cool space in the menu look like something we all would enjoy.. it was exactly what I was looking for . I came here during happy hour, and it was definitely worth it. The happy hour offerings were great, and I really enjoyed the overall ambiance. It had a cozy, speakeasy vibe that made the experience feel a bit more special. There is outdoor seating available, but I chose to sit inside since it was very warm that day. I tried the anchovy toast, which was unique and flavorful, but definitely not for everyone (you really have to love anchovies to fully enjoy it.) The oysters were fresh and delicious, easily one of the highlights of the meal. I wasn't a big fan of the potato skins. The confit filling had a texture that reminded me a bit of refried beans, which wasn't quite what I expected. On the other hand, the fried Brussel sprouts were fantastic with the right amount if crisp, comforting, and packed with flavor. I could have easily ordered a second round and made a meal out of them. After a few visits between Nov 2025- Jan 2026, where it felt the food quality took a nose dive so I took a hiatus. I was told to go back in as they recently changed their menu for Spring (as they do every quarter to reflect the seasonal, fresh vegetables in harvest). So without hesitation, I made my way back in (because this is a spot I do want to succeed and we need in Penngrove). Majority of the menu are new items, which very much reflected spring - light, bright, and delectable. Happy to taste the quality is back to how it was when they first opened and looking forward to coming back in soon. Went here for NYE dinner and it was amazing! We started with the Duck gravy poutine which was great, im always on the give me more duck side of things so I wouldn't mind more meat in it. We had the special which was Prime Rib and also the Crispy Chicken Thigh. The prime rib was actually one of the best we have ever had, usually its very fatty and not great but this one was perfect. I was in Petaluma for a night visiting my son who was there on business for a week. I came to stay with him and take him out to a nice dinner. When I saw 4.8 stars for The Grove on Yelp, I had to try it. A couple of the reviews mentioned Shrimp and Grits and that sold me. I knew I wanted that before I had even seen the menu. The location purports to be a speak easy, so a little incognito, if you're driving by on the road you might miss it. You need to walk down a driveway and enter through a door at the back rather than from the street side. Once inside, the place is lively, not a quiet place by any means. We had a reservation and were seated right away. Service was quick and friendly I ordered the Whiskey Business from the cocktail menu, it was yummy. For dinner, my son ordered the twin lobster tail from the nightly specials, I had the shrimps and grits appetizer as my main. We arrived at The Grove for brunch never having been there before. We had a reservation and were seated immediately upon our arrival. It was Father's day and our Grandson had recommended The Grove and especially their Chicken and Waffles. It was absolutely delicious and I will order it again. My wife had Eggs Benedict with Lobster. She doesn't eat lobster so she gave me her portion (she had asked for it to be served on the side). It was a very generous portion and it was cooked perfectly. Such a nice surprise to discover in Penngrove. We were greeted warmly as we walked in the door. Our table had a window view. Our waiter could not of been kinder and WOW the food! We also got complimentary mimosas for Mother's Day. I had the Croque Madame. It was so delicious. We wanted to go see the Penngrove tractor parade (fun) and needed a dinner spot to follow. Grove had great reviews and an interesting menu. Hostess and waitstaff were WONDERFUL, welcoming and helpful. The bar is a bit noisy but the atmosphere is congenial and cozy.. steak frites were delicious with tender steak and crispy shoestring fries. Duck poutine fries were disappointing in both portion size and quantity of duck. Delicata squash soup was very rich and tasty. Shrimp and grits were very tasty but once again portion sizes were a bit small. The big disappointment for the evening was the root vegetable salad which was a green salad with a few shaved root veggies scattered around. We ordered the wedge salad, burger, and mushroom risotto with lamb. The salad was ample, cold and crisp with the perfect amount of toppings. This can definitely serve two for a salad course. The burger was good, but not remarkable. While the burger and toppings were good, I found the bun to be dry. The risotto was perfectly cooked full of flavor. I was blown away by the creatively constructed, high-end menu at an affordable price! I ordered the Sole Dore which was delicious, but it wasn't a true Dore, which should be pan-fried in an egg batter. The sole was seared on its own & a little too crispy for such a delicate fish but I still enjoyed the mashed potatoes and lightly creamed spinach. It was tasty nonetheless! My fellow diners ordered the tiger shrimp spring rolls, chicken skewers, Fritto Misto, creamed corn, & fish tacos, some from the amazing happy hour menu & all were fantastic! This place is excellent. My BF and I just tried the happy hour and sat at the bar. The bartender (I think her name was Tanisha) was very friendly and helpful. We had reasonably priced cocktails and five shareable food items from the happy hour menu. We had the taco of the day which was a codfish taco; the anchovy toast which was so tasty; the boom boom prawns, which were my favorite served over coconut rice, and I think a mix between sautéed and fried whole prawn with the shell sautéed on its own, which I found to be excellent-- you can eat the whole entire prawn, including the tail and shell; and the duck potato skins, which were not my favorite as I am not a fan of duck but they were fine-- my BF thought they were great. It was fun trying the different menu items. They were all plated beautifully too. My BF also had the tiramisu, which the chef made himself. It was dynamite and we told the chef that. The chef, Gus, came out to greet us and say hello. He is very friendly. This is our third time coming here. Twice sitting at a dining table and once at the bar. Ordered half of the entire dinner menu and the full dessert menu (17 items). Everything, and I mean everything, was fantastic - flavors, textures, presentation, and creativity in the dishes. All of the dinner items arrived around the same time which is a testament to the kitchen's staff's abilities! Standouts were: fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, and mac and cheese. We went for Sunday Brunch. I got the Sweet Potato Waffle, (I wasn't sure what to expect but it was so good, it was a truly delicious waffle that was not dried out like so many waffle dishes are. I'll start with the positives (and end with the very small-picky negatives). The cocktails were amazing. We had the smoke and mirrors and it was so Smokey and spicy. Best spicy cocktail we have ever had. The fried Brussels are to die for and the beef with nuac Cham was insane. The duck gravy poutine was so decadent and the tiramisu was silky. We ordered a dozen raw oysters. Each was so fresh and delightful, full of flavor. The pickled onion garnish was amazing. I also ordered the halibut, which came with a perfect sear. My friend ordered the shrimp and grits and said it was the best shrimp and grits she had ever had. This will definitely be on our list of restaurants to return to when we are back in the area.
