Food is pretty good. The menu is extremely overwhelming (I really think they need to cut it down), but most everything we've had is good. I like their chirashi don and their hand rolls. I think their cuts of fish are really thin compared to other places. Service is good. Servers are always pretty friendly and I don't think we've ever waited too long to be seated or for our food. It's usually busy inside, not crowded, but busy. And it's got a really fun vibe inside. They do have outdoor seating, but I've seldom seen it used. You can also sit at the bar. So my wife and I stopped here for lunch. I was surprised how good the sushi was. We ordered the bento box, 2 items and it was proportionally adequate. The sushi was very well made and tasty. My chicken teriyaki was Ok, the teriyaki sauce was a bite sweet, but it was edible. The shrimp tempura was was battered just right, and it was perfect. The bento box came with a side salad and rice. Since we sat at the bar, which I highly recommend if you are a party of 2. Our server and bartender was attentive and Jonny on the spot. He made us feel like we were regulars. If you like Japanese whiskey, they carry Yamazaki 12 and 18, what a treat. I love Japanese whiskey! The ambiance was nicely decorated and the decor was very modern. Updated Review: I am never disappointed when I come here. Hands down our fav place to eat, we actually come here almost every other weekend! Kid you not! We don't even need a menu. My son gets his trusty chicken katsu. He does not get this anywhere else, he refuses. My daughter gets her go to chirashi don (no tomago) and is in sushi heaven every time. My go to lately is the bento (lunch menu until 4pm) with beef curry (the best hands down) and California roll. I sometimes opt for the iron chef combo if wanting sushi. was in town for a day for work and had a busy day without a meal. So by the time it was almost dinner we were starving. Came across this spot and it looked promising so we decided to try it out. The place is located in a mall and it seems popular as people were coming and going frequently. We came without reservations but were greeted warmly and were accommodated quickly. The restaurant is neat, clean and looked organized. the server was kind and handed us the menu explaining and answering a few questions of ours. Every maki roll I have, I always compare to the rolls here and they never compare. My favorite is the Peter 2 Roll. They have everything one would want in a maki roll; 4 separate type of fish, satisfying texture and perfectly balanced sauce. We came in on a Friday night and it was pretty crowded and we sat at the sushi bar. The staff were friendly, but the service was a bit slow (it took waaaay too long to get a glass of water). The cocktails were only OK and the prices were pretty high, but the food was quite tasty and nice ingredients. We got the dinner for 2 with an extra side of wakame salad and miso soup (both of which were good). The fried crab mushrooms were huge and quite tasty, the sea steak (seared ahi) was pretty good though a bit simple, and the 2 rolls we got were pretty tasty (a spicy spicy tuna one and panko shrimp with unagi). We'll definitely try more of the menu here and hope we find some rolls that are truly worth the price! read more

Amazing food! I had the chirachi bowl which tasted fresh and delicious. This is one of my fave meals to choose at a Japanese restaurant and it did not disappoint. But the most memorable thing I ordered was the lychee martini with the umami bud. I was a bit confused when I got the umami bud. The waitress told me that people like to nibble on it while they're drinking their martini. And me being a person who likes to try new things, I was down to give it a shot. It was the strangest experience ever. My entire tongue started to feel a bit numb and tingly. I feel like I could have gotten a warning from my waitress, but nevertheless, I was quite entertained by the experience. Would a nibble on that bud again in the future? Probably not. It didn't enhance the taste or anything. It was an interesting sensation. But I think I mostly like my tongue to feel normal. The good: I recall living near Sacramento and going to Mikuni's for special occasions. It was the coolest sushi restaurant in town and a guaranteed delicious meal. I was happy to stumble upon Mikuni here in Concord after my mom and I decided it was too cold to eat at the outdoor spots across the way. I tried the Da Vinci roll from the vegan Taro's favorite list and the donburi bowl. The roll was ::chef's kiss:: perfect. It wasn't too heavy in rice, it was fresh, and looked refined. The ingredients were well balanced without one ingredient outshining another. It was the perfect bite-size and the lemon in it gave it a fresh brightness. They have an indoor area and an enclosed outdoor area with heat lamps. The folks here were kind enough to turn on the heat lamp for my mom and me despite it being almost July (it was a windy and cold day, we had a baby, and we were wearing dresses!). The bad: I wanted to sit inside because it was windy outside and I told the hostess I was worried about the cold but she insisted it wasn't cold outside and ushered us to sit outside. It took awhile to get table service once we were seated. I had to flag down staff to bring me my bill. We weren't given menus/scanning codes upon sitting down. The rice bowl was very heavy in rice and could've used more vegetables. The interesting: The first time I tried Mikuni was in Sacramento and the 2nd time was in Davis. Our recent visit to Mikuni was stellar, as usual. The food here is incredible and always fresh. They have an exhaustive list of sushi rolls, sashimi dishes and entrees. The bento boxes are always delicious with healthy portions. The green tea is roasty and amazing. The service is always great. We haven't experienced an inept server in our many visits to Mikuni. Servers are always attentive and thorough. This restaurant is always very clean and well maintained. It can be quite loud at times because they are almost always pretty busy. I went here a year or so ago and returned yesterday. Wasn't really impressed the first time but it was horrible now. The order was wrong and the sashimi pieces were so thin you could see through them! My assorted sashimi pieces were almost all extremely mushy. Like they had been cut hours before and sat exposed to air. Never going back. With that experience I think they must be going out of business. Never had such tiny ultra thin slices anywhere before. Televisions everywhere, background music, and hard surfaces. combined with people trying to be heard at their tables produced a din that was very uncomfortable. I was so glad to escape this place. The food was not very good, and not very Japanese. You definitely know you are eating at a chain restaurant. My husband had soggy tempura. There was nothing in our bento boxes that we would ever want to eat again. We had tea so weak, it was like warm water, and it was served in a plastic cup. He was funny and very attentive without being overbearing. He has his own custom stickers and Pokémon cards he hands out to customers upon checking out. I ordered the "Vegi-Ten Roll", which is made with tempura vegetable roll with special sauce, avocado, sesame seeds, & microgreens. The "Avo-Kyu Roll" is simple yet delicious! It's just avocado & cucumber inside, but perfect for dipping in wasabi & soy sauce. One of my other favorite rolls there is the "Saving Nemo Roll", which has avocado, cucumber, inari tofu on top with salsa, ponzu, teriyaki sauce, & microgreens. We also ordered the "Freaky Edamame", which they explain as "seriously seasoned soybeans". Just as delicious as the rolls! For drinks, I got the "Absolut Lychee Shock", made with Absolut vodka, soho lychee, lemon, & simple syrup, garnished with an umami button. So on the recommendation of family we went for a luncheon. Well in an area with a plethora of sushi restaurants I was expecting to have my socks knocked off. Nope, don't get me wrong the fish was fresh and tasty but I did not find my lunch deliver on the hype. The vibe in the restaurant was great, we sat at the bar and ordered off the lunch menu. We had the sashimi special and the pieces of sashimi were tasty but skimpy on portions. Also had the small plate of sesame chicken the fry was a little light and was not truly appetizing. Finally still hungry we order a rainbow roll which was tasty. Overall my rating is based that the reality did not meet the hype. We came here for my parents' 58th anniversary. It was my first time, so first impressions: The staff was friendly and welcomed us (we were the first in line when opened at 11:30AM). I ordered the Teriyaki beef plate, my dad ordered the chicken teriyaki Bento Box, my mom ordered the teriyaki beef Bento Box and my wife ordered the Banzai salad and mixed tempura. Based on other Japanese restaurants I've been to in the area and other parts of the state, the food rated average to slightly above average. The teriyaki sauce was good but the beef was on the tougher side (there were pieces that were soft). My parents thought the same of their order. The teriyaki beef bento box didn't have any teriyaki sauce which we had to ask for. Unfortunately, it felt like our server started to get irritated with our requests (teriyaki sauce, a couple of orders came 10 minutes later after other orders, refills, etc.). Her tone changed a bit and she wasn't as friendly as when she started. I do understand it was the lunch rush and it was busy so we had patience and was understanding. However, as a server (I'm familiar with the food industry), you must keep your professionalism and set aside feelings if you're frustrated. We maintained our friendly demeanor and were kind in our requests but it wasn't reciprocated. Sadly, it wasn't the best experience for my parents 58th anniversary. Based in our experience and the food, I gave them 3-stars which is generous. I am not sure if I would wholeheartedly recommended this place. read more

I am a big fan of Mikuni! I have eaten at the restaurant and take out from here various times and the food always is great. The ambiance is great, I've sat in the bar and at a table before. Both have been pleasant experiences. I usually get the Vegi-Roll and the Freaky Brussels sprouts. I would recommend the garlic edamame over the freaky edamame and get the freaky Brussels sprouts... so good! The service is great and I always enjoy my time going here, it's definitely a bit pricier so it's more of a special occasion for me personally. Terrible service. I went there with my son and he ordered 2 rolls and I ordered a vegetarian roll and asked for cream cheese to be added and was told there would be an extra charge which I agreed to. I also ordered fried tofu nuggets upon the recommendation of my server. Everything came out 1 by one and at least 10-15 minutes apart so we didn't really get to eat together. When my roll came I wanted to send it back because there was no cream cheese. I waited over 30 minutes for the server to come check on us and tried catching the passing servers and at after 35 minutes I gave up (because we were now there for at least an hour) so I ate the rolls only to discover the tiniest amount of cream cheese. When the server came back there was a roll left and she asked to take it to the kitchen saying she had "to prove" there was no cream cheese which was extremely uncomfortable for me. She brought it back and said a new roll would be made with extra cream cheese and admitted that she forgot to place the order for the tofu nuggets, so they never came. She came back with the tiniest dibble of cream cheese and told me a new roll would not be made as if I was supposed to figure out how to unroll sushi put it inside and roll it back up myself or as if I was to try to figure out how to did something as flimsy as a roll into something as thick as cream cheese. After all that I was still charged for the cream cheese too. read more

We came for a graduation celebration with friends and the food did not disappoint! If there is 1 thing I want to get every time now it's the Tommy Roll, it's huge and full of flavor!
