I was traveling for work and my hotel was down the street from Nobuya. I ended up eating here for two dinners in a row because the food was very good and the owners and servers were very nice. It just happened to be the soft opening for the restaurant my first night so I got to try some sushi on the house. They made me feel like a VIP guest. Such a great sushi spot in Pleasant Hill - and I'm so annoyed at myself for forgetting to take pictures because everything was so good. :) Right when you sit down they bring out complimentary miso soup, which felt like such a nice little touch. We ordered the hamachi sashimi and the Chuck Norris roll, both were delicious and super fresh. I had also ordered a hand roll, but unfortunately it got forgotten. That said, the staff was very apologetic and handled it kindly, which I appreciated. The ambiance here is honestly one of my favorite parts. It's peaceful, cozy, and incredibly clean. We sat across from the sushi bar in this cute little nook with really comfortable seating. They had jazz music playing softly in the background, which made the whole experience feel elevated but still relaxed. What genuinely surprised me most though was the wine list. Most sushi spots have very limited wine options, but this place had an impressive selection - including Mumm champagne, multiple Sauvignon Blanc options, other whites, plenty of reds, and lots of sake choices too. We came here to celebrate my son's birthday. Everything we ate was delicious! We tried the skewers, they were probably my least favorite item but still good. The short ribs, sushi rolls, and k-chicken karaage were amazing! They brought out cute little stuffed key chains for the kids that they adore, and they brought out mochi ice cream for my little man's big day. I think the food and service were impeccable. The only thing I'd like is if they had a way to put in somw noise dampening material - the decor itself is very inviting but the place was very loud and echoed sound. We'll definitely be back soon!! I was meeting with a friend for dinner and we were trying to decide where to go. My co-worker recommended me to try this place, so I looked it up and it was a convenient place to meet up. Parking can be packed really easily, but we went in at 5:00 PM, so we had ample spots for us. There was a lot of seating at opening, but we noticed it got packed really fast. The workers were very friendly and greeted us to our table. There, they provided us with water and miso soup as we were getting to our order. The menu is pretty vast, but we decided to try the Mixed Tempura, K Chicken Karaage, Inari Nigiri, 49er Roll, Rainbow Roll and the coveted Omakase Sashimi Box. Mixed Tempura: The frying was perfect and not too oily and ample amount of items to get. Between my friend and I, we were able to evenly split all the tempura. A very delicious appetizer. K Chicken Karaage: Think of Korean Style soy glazed fried chicken. It was very tender and moist and the flavor profile was phenomenal. It was a perfect addition to our meal as well. My only issue was the sauce did make the chicken lose its crunchiness, which is what I would expect from Karaage. Inari Nigiri: I always have to order this, whenever it is on the menu at a sushi place I am trying. From the first taste, I knew it would be perfect. The skin had the right texture and the vinegar and flavor profile was on spot for me. I truly enjoyed this simple dish. 49er Roll: A classic California roll with salmon and lemon slice on top. I always enjoy this roll wherever I can find it. The ratio of rice to imitation crab filling to fish on top was perfect. I felt like everything worked for me and I can see this being my go to order again. Rainbow Roll: My friend ordered this one and it is a California roll with assorted fish on top. I did not have too much of this, but the ones I did taste, very similar to the 49er roll, and of course delicious. Omakase Sashimi Box: This is what I was looking forward to. It is an assortment of 9 + 1 items that the chef selected for us to eat. I was trying to figure out what fish there was, but unfortunately, our waiter was not able to help figure it all out either. From my best guess, I can see Hamachi, Tuna, Salmon, Shrimp, Fatty Tuna (?), Scallops, Shrimp, Salmon Roe with Rice, and whatever the mystery last fish is. Overall, this was worth the experience to try. All the fish tasted fresh and delicious. The chef curated this box and I can see the effort into making it presentable and delicious. Overall, we had a great experience here. Our waters were constantly filled and the waiters constantly checked in on us. The Omakase Box did take some time to get to us, but we were able to eat our other items along the way. Plus, having sashimi as a closer makes it easier to eat once all the "rice" items have been consumed. I can see myself coming back here again. read more

They did a lovely job of renovating the interior to make it more aesthetically pleasing and inviting. The staff was also very welcoming and sat us in a spacious comfy booth. Finally tried the restaurant people have been talking about. Nobuya in Pleasant Hill. A Saturday afternoon @ 1pm. The parking was easy. They have a parking lot in the back and easy access on the street. There was no wait, and we got a table immediately. They must've had a crowd before us because there were crumbs on the seats and a small bit of food on the menu. LOL. It did take a while to place our order. We had to flag someone down. But once the order was placed, the food was served pretty quickly. They bring you Miso Soup just after seating, which is a nice touch. - The fried oysters were delicious. The coating was light and crispy, not doughy like other places I have tried $13 - Friends got the 3-item combo. $18 for lunch and $21 for dinner. They mentioned the Tonkatsu was really good and the sauce was tasty, not as vinegary as others they have tried - Pink Dragon Roll. It was said that it was very tasty and fresh. $18 - Premium Sushi Platter $56. I thought it was going to come with a few pieces of the Dragon Roll & Spicy Tuna Roll. I have been here twice now, both times for lunch and the food and service were excellent. The employees were super nice and attentive. My friend and I asked which rolls were popular and we were told the Chuck Norris which did not disappoint with the perfect amount of heat. Their chicken kaarage almost does not need the dipping sauce it comes with and their udon with tempura was also delicious. The inside of the restaurant is open and airy and the prices for lunch and overall menu is worth it. The portions were generous and everything tasted fresh. A really great addition to the Pleasant Hill area. Amazingly fresh sushi and sashimi. My husband had the Nigiri Selection and I ordered the Spicy Sashimi Bowl. Everything was extremely fresh! It was a Friday night and was busy. We waited about 15 minutes and got seats at the sushi bar. Our service was great, quick and attentive, by the chefs and wait staff. We were even given a free appetizer with scallops and I believe mussels. I highly recommend for sashimi or raw sushi dishes. I look forward to trying the omakase in the near future. read more

We had a reservations for 8 this evening and service and food was just okay. I had high hopes for this place but everything we wanted was sold out. The kaison don box, santoury beer like that's the main items you sell and how can it be sold out already. Let alone I had to get up 3x to ask for soy sauce and tell another waiter we haven't been checked on. We didn't get no water refill they forgot our ramen and another roll. When we got our spicy tuna salad it was still frozen. Service needs work and if we got every dish we ordered in a timely matter and didn't have to get up and ask for soy sauce maybe we would've had a better experience. Eh, nothing special. Unless you're going to higher end sushi places, they all taste the same. Wasn't a huge fan of the way they make their rolls as far as shape and size. They were hard to eat because they were shaped very large and cut thin so they fell apart when you picked it up. Wish they'd just make them the normal way. Prolly would just go to my go to spot next time. Oh also, I know they're new but I noticed the bus boy put the dirty dish gray bus tub on the ground then he put it back on the table.. not the best food safety practice. read more

Sat us down in the most comfortable dining chair ever. They have Japanese style booths that look like it's professional built. Ok that's really nice. Where am I? In a Michelin Star restaurant? I scanned around. Everyone food looks so good, artwork on plates like it's an image from AI. Ordered the Gozen (like bento) with 3 items and we shared a Nobuya Omakase box. Dude!!! My Gozen was premium sized, the best deal of any $21 I ever spent. The Nobuya Omakase Box... hold the front door!!! They should change the name to Nobuya OMG Box. Every bite was perfect, no drowning in soy sauce is required. The experience in Nobuya was perfect. My favorite date night dinner in years. I love you bright eyes for taking me here. Hands down, Nobuya is one the best Japanese restaurant in the Bay Area. It's going to get a Michelin Star one day, so go here before there's a six month waiting list. read more

Service was kind of slow. I saw four chefs behind the sushi bar and maybe 6 waiters for this huge place (might be a bit bigger than Ozora). Water and soup came quickly but foods came in like 15-20 min intervals, and kid bento came at the very end after I inquired. Fortunately, kids were fine eating our foods to ease their hunger. Pleasant Hill has a beautiful new restaurant! We were invited to the soft opening of Nobuya Izakaya & Sushi on Contra Costa Blvd., in Pleasant Hill (the old Yaedam). Everything was fabulous! Sung and his team spent four months remodeling the space, and it's gorgeous! Sung has a little experience in the sushi business; he also owns Ozora in Concord, near Trader Joe's. Nobuya is gorgeous! They really outdid themselves with the remodel. It has a great date night vibe and is a fabulous place to meet friends for happy hour. I love that they have a lounge area near the sushi bar. The menu is expansive! We tried so many delicious dishes, from Nobuya Omakase Box to Mochi Ice Cream. Everything was fresh and delicious...It was also beautiful! The Omakase and Kaisen Boxes were standouts! I've labeled each photo and included the complete menu in the photos. The customer service was out of this world! Everyone was so friendly and kind. It was really an amazing experience. In the near future, Sung plans to offer regular and late-night happy hours as Ozora does. There will also be Sake and Sashimi pairings. I think the late night offerings will be a hit; we don't have very many restaurants that are open late in Pleasant Hill. read more

Went for dinner on Monday night and it was somewhat busy. Got seated pretty quickly but took a very long time for the server to get our order and waters. We got our main dishes before our appetizer (oysters) which was annoying. One of the rolls we ordered came without the sauce. We love oysters but couldn't even finish the 6 we got. They were weirdly large and flavorless. The food was meh but the service was excruciatingly slow. So many of the seated patrons were looking around waiting for their order to be taken. When I arrived the restaurant wasn't too busy I was greeted with a big warm welcome from the Man at the register took a look at the menu and then ordered while waiting for my food another employee offered me something to drink while I waited. Arrived, placed our name on the list & were seated within 10 minutes, nice! It was packed at 1pm on a Saturday, lots of chatter, customers enjoying their meals in a beautifully decorated space. The quality of the food they serve is unsurpassed, a step IMO above all other Japanese restaurants in Contra Costa County. Five stars for the salmon sashimi, Garlicky Edamame, stuffed CA Roll, Ebi Nigiri and even the Sapporo served with a frosty ice cold mug (nice touch I miss from the old days). We found the Pork Ramen & service lacking, soup nice noodles but rather bland; service was slow, dishes sat, water not refilled, hard to flag down the waiter for our check. However staffing issues are just part of getting a new restaurant off the ground. I'm sure this will improve with time. We'll definitely be back for Nobuya's exceptional cuisine, highly recommend! read more
