A wonderful date night included dinner at a lovely little sushi bar in downtown Walnut Creek. The place was empty when we walked in but filled up very quickly. We were also greeted by the friendliest staff. Our original plan was to share a sushi boat but had to go to plan b when we were told that they did not have a sushi boat on the menu. So the hunny ended up ordering the sashimi combo while I ordered the nigiri combo. Much to our surprise, the chef honored our request & combined our order on to a sushi boat! The presentation was absolutely stunning, and everything was so fresh & delicious. The chef told us we were the first customers to order the sushi boat. Hopefully, we won't be the last. I'm really don't want to speak badly about this place, but both those rolls had brown/black tuna pieces. Could not finish the rolls, it was just bad/expired Tuna. The crab salad on the SF giants was a bit thick and whimsical. Mostly rice on that roll. We had Poke bowls recently at another spot and the fish quality was night and day noticeable. Garlic edamame and the Salmon Sashimi were great. But the positive stuff stops there. It's also not very cheap. $22 average price on rolls, you'd expect top notch fish. We got offered a drinks and recommended some rolls to choose from. Browse to the menu and ordered a standard Dragon, Phila and Caterpillar rolls to compare the quality. Got slightly disappointed because my favorite Dragon came falling apart, not tightly rolled. Phila and Caterpillar were just standard, nothing special. Honestly, this place is better than the 3.5 Star Yelp review it has. It's a decent place to eat sushi in Walnut Creek. And while yes, the prices are high, they make it up in portions. The tekka maki I got was one of the largest sizes I've ever seen. And I think they may have snuck in some toro in the cut, which was a treat. Yes the restaurant is run by Chinese staff, but it shouldn't be a knock. Nigri sizes are large as well, and the fish they served had garnishes, such as yuzu kosho, that made them tastier. So yeah, my wife and I enjoyed our meal. I would come back here if I wanted a casual night. Our bill was $110 between two people, but we ordered a ton of food. Oyama is nestled on Main Street in Walnut Creek. It's a small mom and pop restaurant and we went out for a date Nite. We were happy to be seated quickly. I ordered iced tea and it was flavored. I asked the waitress and she said that was all they had. They do have high chairs and booster seats for the kiddos and the bathrooms were clean. We had agedashi tofu and a couple of rolls. The agedashi wasn't the best, but the rolls were great. Next time I'm in Walnut Creek looking for Japanese fare, I probably will look at other places first before coming back. We come here often as it is a hole in the wall type of place. The service has always been good. The ambiance is relaxed, it can get a bit noisy if sitting close . The food always taste good to me. Honestly, I'm here for this place having 3 1/2 stars. Only because its true what they say about Asian cuisine's with the 3 1/2 stars. My home girl Ayanna introduced me to this location and their toro sushi was THE ONE! We literally ordered of their specials and it did not disappoint at all. This is definitely a hidden gem and I know if you're a regular they treat you like their own - LOL. I only know cause my home girl is a regular and they were super pleasant to us. My coworker is quite the fisherman, so when he started pulling something out his tuna, he knew it was a worm. How can you tell? There is a VEIN! I immediately lost my appetite, and I called the waitress over to show her, but she claimed it was just how the tuna flesh was... She DID NOT bring it to the chef, she DID NOT apologize, she charged us in full for both meals. Mostly we felt brushed off. My coworker was so nice he didn't even want to bring it up. They have a pretty extensive menu, and lots of special rolls. It was a little on the pricier side, but everything was super fresh and Unagi was served warm which I love! I also had my favorite, a negihama roll, some salmon nigiri, and a spicy tuna roll which was supposed to be a hand roll but they messed up. I felt bad sending it back so I just ate it. One of the better spicy tuna rolls that I have had. I'd love to go back with more people so that I could try out some of the special rolls because they really looked delicious. After hiking the Lafayette Reservoir with a friend, we agreed sushi would sound good. We were famished. We walked into the sushi place about 15 minutes before they opened all the door was unlocked and they welcomed us to sit down if we didn't mind waiting until their opening time. We went to this restaurant on Valentine's day. We ate our appetizer and waited for our entrees. After 30 min.s wait we asked the server, if our entrees, sashimi platter and tonkatsu ramen were about to be served. She assured us, 10 more min.s. We were patient but quite hungry so, we inquired again after 15 more min.s, she said the same thing. Long story short, sashimi which doesn't require cooking and tonkatsu ramen which takes basically 8 min.s to cook were served in 1 hour 5 min. (I've worked in ramen shop in my college years. Ramen is Japanese fast food) Sadly, the food we waited for an hour was terrible. Undercooked noodles in lukewarm soup and slightly frozen in the middle sashimi. In addition, the server gave us an attitude, saying what can they do if they are busy. We notice that they focus on Doordash a lot. Anyway, DON'T GO Here. Order Doordash. I don't know where I should start with this review.. if you read all long reviews stick around. If not, the wait time for my food was 2 hours and 30 minutes, gratuity is added at 18% and people left to eat elsewhere because they got sick of waiting. The one star is reflected in many areas of the restaurant, but of the most I would say it is getting 1 star for the service. The service here is .. slow and it's a big problem because if you door dash the restaurant you can get large orders with in the hour. I came here with a party of four and waited (personally) longer than 2 HRS and still didn't get the sushi rolls I ordered at my table with my party of four. In the 2+ hours we sat, the table (2 people) next to us had two different couples get their food before my entire table did, and a third party of two was being waited on as I finally got my rolls. Three parties left after putting orders in, and were visibly frustrated well into 1 hour and 30 minutes time mark. This restaurant seems like it's a satellite kitchen and they don't prioritize in house guests. My sushi I ordered came out 2 hours and 32 minutes into our stay and visually it looked pretty. The taste was fine, however I did not enjoy the sushi rolls. They all fell apart (without soy sauce) and with soy sauce they essentially just melted. Very loose and weak sushi rolling skill in the kitchen. The floors were slick. Black ice slick. It wasn't wet, but it was like a cleaning product that makes the floor sticky and slick. Certainly not safe, but I'm not here complaining about the floors, just the experience I had overall. It sucks writing reviews like this, I don't want anyones business to perish especially after such tough times for us all with COVID. I also don't think other people should have to have my experience here, so if you do want to support local - Door dash the meal from this restaurant because you'll get some decent sushi faster than in the restaurant. 8 rolls, miso soup, iced tea, two sparkling waters, and sake was $300 with a 18% gratuity automatically added... after waiting over 2 hours to get food, and having to look at a bill like that without any acknowledgment from the staff hurts.
