Michael's Diner is my go to place in Kingston when I'm driving through. They're always open, they're always nice and the food is always decent. They offer a huge menu with something for everyone. I usually opt for breakfast, but have enjoyed a number of sandwiches and burgers here as well. Their portions are huge and the prices low, so its a real win! We have given this place two chances. That's our rule, two chances before we don't return. The first time we went the food was quite good, but service sucked! Our waitress never checked back on us and we needed something that they forgot with our food. She was constantly too focused on her "regulars" that we didn't seem to matter. We went back again today, different waitress this time, and service still wasn't great. Checked on the table across from us who were "regulars" but didn't check on us. Server my boyfriend's meal more than 5 minutes before mine (that's not an exaggeration). So by the time I got my meal he was almost done. He was supposed to get gravy with his meal but the waitress never came back to check on us until she brought out my meal and by then his potatoes were gone, otherwise they would have been cold. His fish was very bland and my fried chicken was quite weird. It had some kind of weird sweetness to it that chicken shouldn't have. Overall, the people are friendly, but unless you are a regular don't expect to be taken care of. The best worker there is the man who clears the tables and gets refills on water. Our waitress walked by multiple times with our glasses nearly empty and never asked to refill it, and I'm the type of person who puts my glass at the edge of the table so I don't have to call someone over to refill. To begin, gone to michaels before with great satisfactions and the person who I believe is the host or one of the managers, John is a wonderful person who is too kind to the customers, I would have much rather paid the bill for this incident instead of it being on the house. We're kind people who had come for a late night meal unaware of the fact that they were closing at midnight. It was 10:45, we were unsure of we wanted at first but after putting our order in it went down hill. Two paninis that took fifteen minutes to come out, missing coleslaw and pickles as well. The food was mediocre; the California panini was lacking in chicken that wasn't even on the bread with a laughable portion of avocado (guacamole instead) and the turkey club panini was another joke on its own with its dry turkey meat, lack of lettuce, tomato, and mayo. The waitress hadn't come by to check on us or even offer any refills. Sitting for twenty minutes waiting for the check while she gossips about her vacations at the bar. Hopefully next time will be better. read more

Michael's has long been the quintessential diner in the Kingston Ny area. They've always had delicious food, extremely generous portions, friendly service, and great prices. However recently the menu changed; I was nervous, were they going to ruin what made Micheal's my go-to spot?, I should've known better then to doubt the owner,Steve Oulupis! They kept everything that made the diner a Kingston classic, plus they added a bevy of phenomenal new salads. Additionally they added a lighter menu- in which you get a half portion of their normally gigantic entrees, along with soup or salad, and a choice of homemade pudding for dessert (I love the rice pudding)- for ONLY 7.95! The bottom line- great food, great prices & great service! And you are supporting LOCAL business! read more

I have been going to Michael's Diner since I was 16 years old working at the Firestone dealer that used to be next store. Usually it is quite good. I went there on 9/13/2013 for lunch and got a Roast Turkey Sandwich which my wife and I have had there before and it is an actual roasted turkey sandwich not processed meat. This time it was a hunk of salty white stuff between two pieces of toast. The most horrible sandwich I have had in years. I am not sure what happened but it was terrible. My wife won't trust the place again. I have little tolerance for saying it is roast turkey and throwing on crappy deli meat. Bad move Michael's, that's the way to turn away a 40 year customer. Tell me it is not roast turkey and I will pick something else !!!! Btw don't offer it as a special for the day as roast turkey either. THAT WAS JUST PLAIN INSULTING !!! read more

I am a fan of Michael's. My wife and I frequent this diner the most in our area. They have great breakfast, coffee, and general Diner grub. The portions are fair and the price is average. I enjoy their wraps as well. It is great to be able to stop in at any time of night, especially if you are out and want something late. read more

This diner is OK, but I prefer the other diners in the area to this one. I will continue to go to Broadway Lights Diner or Kings Valley Diner before coming back here. My biggest complaint is that their coffee was really bad. I usually have low expectations for diner coffee but this was like drinking motor oil. I built my own omelette which was good but they used American cheese instead of cheddar. I waited awhile to be seated while the waitresses chatted amongst themselves but once seated service was very attentive. Ah, Michael's. I'm always sold on a bottomless cup of cheap coffee, and diners are the place to be if you have that kind of thing in mind. Who doesn't love a good plate of greasy fries and a grilled cheese at 2 a.m.? It's the kind of diner that can only be fully enjoyed in the wee hours of the night; the girls in the booth next to you are discussing nasty breakups VERY loudly and sobbing into a plate of onion rings, and the people in the booth behind you are most definitely inebriated and devouring 4 plates of mozzarella sticks. Today, we went there, and, unlike all other times, we wanted a bite as a snack. I was impressed. Their cheesecakes they have are delectable. So, despite the lack of delicious regular-menu foods, I don't mind eating snacks here. I'm not sure why it's happening, but the food is just not what it used to be. Tonight we had instant potatoes. I've never had instant potatoes there before. They were poorly made, no flavor and somewhat runny. We were very disappointed. I can honestly say the best part of my food was the salad. The host told us to sit anywhere. We sat in the first booth on the left of the first aisle. We then waited over 8 minutes for a menu. We had to ask for them. He walked by us four or five times and would nod at us but gave no service. As I watched him grab menus and seat people and we still had nothing I was getting more and more annoyed. The man who brings the silverware and water to the table finally came over, looked at the empty table and went back where the water is and never came back. My wife ordered a mini meal. I asked her not to, but that's what she wanted. I've never ordered a mini meal. Yet I've gotten quite a few. Anytime my wife orders one I get one too. On every bill my wife's meal says mini, mine dies Mr and yet I get it every time. I guess not the smartest people working in the kitchen. Between being ignored, having to ask for menus, silverware, and water and them getting my order wrong, it was not a pleasant visit. The food is not as good as it once was, usually the service is good, not today though. I asked the guy if there was a specials sheet for in the menu. He said if it isn't in there we don't have any. Just the two on the board. I asked the waitress who shook her head and said "John didn't make any." WOW!! I have noticed that John is usually in his office when he's there. Or he's eating in one of the booths with family or friends. We love John, but I don't think he's on top of running the diner. I'd hate to see it fail, but I foresee that happening if he doesnt get on top of his game. We're going to back off for a while and sincerely hope changes are made for the better. read more

This is an above-average Greek style 24 hour diner. In this area, it has no equal. It's always clean with good staff, efficient and friendly. I like the organic multi-grain pancakes, which are not available in most diners. The open-faced turkey sandwich was fine; real roast turkey and mashed potatoes. Breakfast is served 24 hours. Wide variety of menu choices. The only drawback is the hamburger meat; it is definitely below what I consider acceptable. I tried it twice, both times a pre-frozen thin patty that has tough and chewy parts. I hope they upgrade the meat soon! read more

Michael's is okay, but in this town it suffers greatly from comparison to the competition. It's competent diner food, but it's just not as good as Olympic Diner or the King's Valley Diner. The menu selection isn't as wide as the competition, either. While Michael's is closer to the Town of Ulster shopping district, there's a few things that make that apparent convenience less attractive. Michael's sits on a one-way access ramp that can only be approached from the north, and you can only leave the restaurant and head south. If that doesn't mesh with your travel plans, you will have to do some navigating to get back on track. When you get there, you'll have to deal with a very narrow parking lot with relatively few spaces, one travel lane shared by inbound and outbound traffic, and no good spot to turn around if there's a crowd. Inside, the decor is closer to traditional diner mirrors and chrome than others, but it's by no means a "diner car" experience. It's also a smaller restaurant by far than Olympic or King's Valley, which means it fills up more quickly and waits can be longer. read more
