An uneven weekend (our hotel as well as where we went for dinner the night before were both disappointing) was about to come to an end and we needed to fuel up for the journey home. Yelp came to the rescue and we found ourselves... here. Cats aplenty (from hats to posters) which is an automatic 5-stars from the Mrs. We bounced around the menu (loaf of babka here, egg-and-cheese sandwich there, some desserts over that way) as well as coffee and an Arnold Palmer. This place was great! It had a NY feel when you walk in and everyone was friendly. The owner was so gracious and took time to talk with us and even gave one of us a free slice of babka. We got the chocolate babka and my girls immediately fell in love. Our group also got the hot fresh donuts and everyone agreed they were awesome, but they still tasted good the next day. When people talk about the chocolate babka, they're not kidding. Holy cow. I should NOT have eaten the entire slice but it was amazing. Add blazing fast internet and you've got an excellent combination... especially for someone like me, stopping by while on a river cruise where the internet has all the power of a peeing grasshopper. Whether you're looking for a power breakfast, lunch, a Chai, lemonade, Hot Cocoa, Turkish Tea, coffee, or a place to just unwind a bit, Half Moon's got you covered. While some cafes are treasured for the food, others are vibe-forward. Half Moon, is a bit of both. This space is large with hardwood floors, a powerful brick wall, a collection of framed art on the opposite wall, sitting nooks and two green rustic wooden communal tables. Overhead menu lists egg sandwiches+other items, drinks while their covered shelf, includes muffins and other pastries. My cranberry muffin was good and reminded me of a muffin I could get from those coffee/bagel/muffin carts in NYC. I came, conquered and picked up a chocolate babka loaf for home. Do know it's $30. But believe- if you're a chocolate fiend, this is for you. Kaira has a tremendous warm energy. She even suggested that the Chocolate babka would taste 100 times better if you slice off a piece, melt some butter in a skillet and let it get those brown buttery edges instead of putting it in the toaster oven. First off, I took no photos because I never thought I was going to review this place. I just saw a sign in the window..."hot donuts." I entered with high expectations, but found room temperature donuts, which were very small. A basic ring donut with chocolate icing...$4.00. A small ring donut cut in half, with a very mild pistachio filling...$5.00. A total of $9.00 for two donuts that were not "hot" and were rather mealy. The sign by the register said 5% discount if you pay with cash. They wanted $9.00. I get a text message after filling out a survey with my e-receipt, telling me that you pay 5% more if you pay with credit. I know, 45 cents isn't much, but when you are paying $9.00 for two donuts, it is the principle of the thing. Rewrite your sign. Have it say what actually happens. There's no "discount" when you pay with cash. There is a penalty if you pay with credit. As for ambiance ? It's a nice old building. It seems to have a fair amount of customers who seem to enjoy it. As for that, I say good for them! I'm not in that group, however. I've found that food in New York seems to have a pattern. It's overpriced and overrated. read more

What a great little shop! My partner and I have stopped in downtown Kingston a few times but never got a chance to make it to this area. Now we know better! Upon entering we were greeted by such friendly staff. The donuts here are made to order and thus, super fresh, 100% worth the wait since they literally make it when you order it. We wanted something savory/more filling as well so we tried the bacon egg and cheese on toast and it was excellent- tasted like a grilled cheese. We also tried the chocolate babka and rainbow cookie. Vegan Chocolate Babka?! Wow. That's next level awesome, and it tastes like there's zero difference from regular babka- amazingness. (I am a non-vegan who tries vegan dishes.) Apparently it's also baked in a totally separate allergy-free facility as well for those who are extra sensitive to certain issues. Retail staff went out of the way to strike up extra friendly conversation and connection as well, which is really going the extra mile to make people feel welcome, and is much appreciated as a visitor. Unfortunately they suffered a power outage from a blown transformer, but the staff was super kind and accommodating and I was still able to walk away with yummy treats.
